SPECIES SPOTLIGHT

Hello readers, and welcome back to an exciting week of Species Spotlight! This is Danielle making a return as a guest host.

Before we put the spotlight on this week’s original species, I wish to let all of you know that we’re still looking to recruit more hosts for this segment. If you enjoy diving into species lore and/or find original species fascinating, then this might be for you! Feel free to message our boss, Yeshua, or our HR, Carkas, if you’re interested in hosting Species Spotlight.

This week we’ll be getting electrified with a species called Screenets by KATTEG4T!

An information sheet about the Screenets.

See the high resolution version here.

What are Screenets?

Screenets are simple yet very tall electrical creatures with long necks and tails. They can be both anthro and feral.

A 3D model test of the Screenet mascot.

See this Screenet mascot in a 360 view here.

Anatomy and Physiology

Screenets can grow up to eight feet tall depending on the amount of electricity they get. They have paw pads that can come in various shapes such as a heart, circle, triangle, and star. Screenets always need to have at least one part of their body where electricity is shown since their body is made up of 70 percent electricity. The electricity enables their digital body parts to glow in the dark. They get their power or life from any source of electricity such as electrical wires, allowing for a diverse range of color in electricity. However, the common electricity color is mainly blue.

Behavior and Diet

Screenets communicate by sending out signals that can go up to 200 meters far. They are capable of eating, but they can survive just fine as long as there’s electricity in their body. When angered and/or being attacked, Screenets will give a tiny electrical shot where the electricity is shown on their body.

See the high resolution version here.

Obtaining a Screenet

Screenets are an open species, which means you’re welcome to get creative with them; there are no limits. When making your own, please be sure to give credit to KATTEG4T for the species and to follow the simple guidelines on the species information post. Feel free to share your Screenet creations with KATTEG4T; they’d be more than happy to see them.

Looking for more of the Screenet species? Feel free to check out the Screenet group on DeviantArt to immerse yourself in the open species. You can find free to use bases there like this newest one here to help you get started with your own.

If you have any questions about the species, feel free to reach out to KATTEG4T on any of their socials as specified on their Carrd. They aren’t as active on DeviantArt anymore, but they’ll be around to answer any questions you may have about the species.

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

Thank you for tuning in to this week of Species Spotlight! I hope you enjoyed learning about the Screenets today. There are plenty of creative original species out there, and we’ll be sure to hunt them down.

Ready for us to explore your original species? Feel free to fill out this form if interested. You can also submit content by emailing furryweeklysubmissions@gmail.com, or you can directly message me on any of my platforms.

As Coyote Peterson from Brave Wilderness says, stay wild, and we’ll see you on the next species adventure!

ANIMAL OF THE WEEK

Hello everyone! It’s Zed Shirogane and it’s another animal of the week segment!

Animal of the week is a segment where we highlight an animal that is really cool, cute, creepy, or just plain fascinating. There will be a coloring-page illustration for you all to print out and color in at home, as well as an adoptable character inspired by the animal of that week. The best part? All proceeds made by said adopt will be donated to conservation charities!

Whenever possible, we do symbolically adopt the animal, but only some animals have the privilege to have that as an option unfortunately; thus we collect extra funds to donate to many different species conservation charities, donate towards wildlife rehabilitation programs, or send funds to scientists so that they can research underappreciated animal species. Join us on this fun adventure, and I hope that you, too, will fall in love with these amazing animals!

Today we have the second part of our Geckos series!

Geckos are small, mostly carnivorous lizards that have a wide distribution, found on every continent except Antarctica. Geckos are unique among lizards for their vocalizations, which differ from species to species. Unlike most lizards, geckos are usually nocturnal and have excellent night vision; their color vision in low light is 350 times more sensitive than human eyes. Many species are well known for their specialized toe pads, which enable them to grab and climb onto smooth and vertical surfaces, and even cross indoor ceilings with ease. Geckos are well known to people who live in warm regions of the world, where several species make their home inside human habitations. The Neo-Latin gekko and English 'gecko' stem from Indonesian-Malaysian gēkoq, it is a Malay word borrowed from Javanese, from tokek, which imitates the sounds that some species like Tokay gecko make.

This Week’s Species: Three-lined Knob-tail gecko (Nephrurus levis)

Characteristics

A robust, medium-sized gecko, with a large, triangular head. It has a short, flattened, carrot shaped like tail that ends in a knob. It has long slender limbs with non-retractile claws on digits.

Fun Facts

A common, alternative, name for this family is barking geckos due loud barks they make during threat displays, which includes swaying their bodies, winding their tail and attacking with an open mouth.

Habitat

Three-lined knob-tailed geckos are distributed throughout the arid interior of Australia, occurring in all mainland states and territories other than Victoria and the ACT. They are prevalent throughout the state of South Australia, including as far south as Adelaide. They can be commonly found as far north as Tennant Creek, Northern Territory; as far east as Bourke, New South Wales and as far west as Western Australia's coastline. The three-lined knob-tailed gecko is found in a wide range of habitats, including arid, semiarid, open woodland, arid scrubs, spinifex covered deserts, sand-plains and dune-fields.

Diet

The three-lined knob-tailed gecko is considered to be an insectivore, preying on spiders, grasshoppers, beetles, cockroaches, scorpions, centipedes and even on other smaller geckos.

Life Cycle

The breeding season occurs between October and March (warmer months), with females able to have 6 or 7 clutches of eggs. When females are ready to breed they will show receptive behaviors, allowing the males to mate with them. Non-receptive females will stand their ground, either attacking or running from the male. After mating, deposition takes around 4 to 6 weeks, then the eggs take around 6 to 8 weeks to hatch. Each clutch predominantly has 2 eggs.

Conservation

N. levis are listed as ‘Least Concern’ by the IUCN's Species Red List due to its large range of distribution and lack of any major threats, at the current time. Localized threats for this species are grazing of livestock and land clearing, however unless there is large-scale decline in their abundance there is no need for a higher threat category.

Here are some links to articles about the conservation of the three-lined Knob-tail gecko:

Adopt

All funds from this adopt will go to animal conservation. The goal for this month is to save up to help fund the care of Jasmine the leopard gecko from Barn Nature Center and symbolically adopt an ornate day gecko from Mauritian Wildlife. These two adoptions require a total of $120 and this adopt will be one of 4 total created to achieve this goal. It will be available for $30 at Shirogane Studios.

Coloring Page

Enjoy this coloring page made by yours truly, for you! Feel free to print it out at home to color in. If you enjoy the design you can also purchase it on a multitude of products like shirts and stickers: links to these options can be found at Shirogane Studios.

ART 101

Let’s talk about Artfight!

Art 101: The Great Artfight Commences

Artists! Gather up those pencils, pens, stylists, brushes, needles, and thread, for the great Artfight has now begun! Hi all, Shroom here! It's time to talk about the annual, artistic throwdown that is Artfight.

Skull fox walking with an Artfight themed flag.

If you've been paying attention to the past week or so, you've likely noticed a few artists drum up support for either something called "Team Stardust" or "Team Seafoam." Pay no mind to the smack talk, for this is all in good fun. In truth, these are the teams and theme for this year's Artfight.

For those uninitiated, Artfight is an art trading game hosted annually in the month of July where artists get to duke it out amongst each other. New and existing users select what team they wish to join based on that year's theme. For 2024, the theme was revealed to be "Seafoam vs. Stardust."

Banners and icons designed around the green hues of Seafoam and the purple splashes of Stardust.

Art by krakenpho.

The competition is hosted on Artfight's main website and encourages artists of all mediums and skills to participate in the competition via "attacks" and "revenges".

Attacks act as the main mechanic of the game and involve artists creating art of any variety for other users' original characters. Or countering an attack with art of their own in the form of a revenge.

Participants are free to choose which characters they create art for and the main home page continually showcases recent attacks logged and new characters added to users' rosters. So, if you're not sure who your first attack should be directed to, you can take a look around until something catches your eye!

But wait, how does any of this truly work?

Well, as mentioned before, there are those two main teams: Seafoam & Stardust. Attacks are intended to be directed towards users of the opposing team, but can also be instigated towards teammates. This is just good ol' friendly fire. But regardless, every attack generates points.

Skull fox sits on the current point tally of Artfight.

Artfight works by using a general grading system that calculates the amount of points any one attack creates. There's five main categories covered under the official Attack Rating Guide: Size, Drawn/Painted, 3D Model, Crafts, & Animation.

Each category allows for a more indepth grading system tailored to each medium. All of which helps inform users when it comes time to submit their attacks. Details like how much of a character is shown, if color was added, whether or not there is a background, or if there was some added polish; all of it works towards the total tally displayed on the homepage.

When the month finally comes to a close, whichever team has the most points wins!

Mainly, bragging rights. But therein lies the key component to Artfight and why, personally, it has become as successful and celebrated as it is.

The spirit of Artfight is the joy of artistic creation and the inherent desire to share that amongst creators. It is an event that celebrates art and characters and relishes in the unfettered joy that comes with simply creating.

Take a look around and you can see the vast variety of attacks: from 3D models, to paintings, to comics, to animations and animatics, to themed DND dice sets, to plushies, and even mass attacks featuring tens upon hundreds of characters.

Everywhere you look, you can see the unabashed celebration of art.

So, can you still join?

ABSOLUTELY!

The competition runs throughout the entire month of July and you can join at any time. Simply set up an account, pick your team, and get creating!

You can even fill out your own team intro cards to help showcase your allegiances and your featured characters.

Intro cards showing the user's attack preferences and featured characters.

So what are you waiting for?

Become one with the sea and conquer the stars! Or harness the galaxy and take on the ocean! For the great Artfight has commenced, dear readers, and the time has come to raise your swords.

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

If you have any suggestions for future segments or simply have some questions regarding anything I’ve discussed feel free to reach out to me! Regardless, I hope to catch you all next week as we further our art journeys together! (Or on the battlefield) >:)

WRITING 101

Over the course of several weeks, the Camera served as quite a spectacle. Its previous mundane chirps, whirrs, and levitation transformed into wondrous technological marvels, all thanks to the Writing 101 host’s completely fresh perspective. The snake had never seen anything so fascinating in today’s technology. Every time they spent time together, he couldn’t help but remark on the Camera’s abilities.

“I still don’t understand how you’re able to float…” mutters Phoenix, clearly in awe. He sits on the couch in his apartment with the Camera in his thin hands. “Gravity inhibitors…? Or some sort of propulsion? Something with the Earth’s magnetic field?”

The Camera is powered on but holds quite still. Phoenix couldn’t help but take it out once more—perhaps turning it on a few seconds ago was like waking it from a nap. It offers a low and drowsy whirr in response.

“Sorry.... Here, I’ll stop.”

The snake sets the Camera on the cushion. He could coil his long, thick tail around the machine like a nest. He did so out of curiosity of how the machine might react. The Camera snuggles in a bit, kind of like a cat, as its lights slowly glow to life.

“Heh. You’re an interesting one, that’s for sure.”

Phoenix picks up his laptop from the other cushion, opens it, and checks his documents folder. He hadn’t written for the magazine in quite some time; in fact, he felt he may need to shake off some rust to get back into the writing groove. He stretches out his fingers, cracks his knuckles, and begins typing, claws clicking and clacking against the keys.

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

Hello friends, and welcome to Furry Weekly’s Writing 101! I’m Bryce Griffin, here to get all you writers out there the inside scoop on literature tips and tricks. Let’s get started!

Let’s talk about: The Foil

Let's talk about:

The Foil

We all know that a protagonist and an antagonist drive conflict in practically any story. They are central characters able to demonstrate how one reacts based on the other’s words or actions. However, they are not the only types of characters that can exert considerable influence. Supplemental characters may play small parts from time to time, but there is one type of character who works to draw out the best (or worst) qualities of another.

A foil is a character that serves to accentuate or contrast certain qualities of another character, typically the protagonist.

This term originates from an old jewelry practice of selling gems on reflective foil. Such a trick would help enhance a jewel’s shine by reflecting light where it wouldn’t typically reach (notice how modern jewel displays use a lot of bright lights from various directions, creating a similar effect). A foil in a story serves a similar purpose—they shine light on specific aspects of another character to better highlight certain qualities, whether good or bad.

Foils can range from a protagonist’s ally, showcasing certain qualities suited for the quest at hand, to the main antagonist, whose qualities may sharply contrast against the protagonist’s. Is the protagonist a hot-headed, trigger-happy gunslinger? His enemy can be a patient sharpshooter, always waiting for the right time to strike. Or maybe his partner fumbles his words when talking to others, therefore drawing attention to the protagonist’s silver tongue and skill at smoothing over any situation.

The foil is not limited to a differing physique or personality. It can involve something as abstract as choices throughout the story. If two recovering alcoholics cross paths at their local AA meeting, the story could use these two characters as foil to the other. One member may be down on his luck and struggling to get a foothold in society, but they’re able to successfully remain sober in the face of these hardships. The other member may be fairly well-off, yet constant returning to alcohol could seriously disrupt, and ultimately ruin, his life.

Poorly-conceived foils may come across as a heavy-handed effort to “shine up” or “dress up” the protagonist. Remember that everyone has their flaws, including the hero of the story. How you design a character’s foil is entirely up to you, but keep in mind that the foil’s purpose is to draw a contrast against another character, not make them look perfect. Even the most beautiful gems are not perfect.

Want me to take a look at your work? Got a general question for Writing 101? Just shoot me a message on Discord! I’ll be happy to answer any writing questions or even critique your work.

Thanks for joining me in Furry Weekly’s Writing 101. I hope you enjoy the rest of the magazine!

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

Phoenix slumps into the cushions and sighs. Indeed, he needed to shake off quite a bit of rust. It felt great to write again, but exercising his brain like this again left it feeling a little tired and strained. It didn’t help that his day job typically made his brain feel similarly. A walk would do him quite a bit of good—Phoenix excitedly checks the conditions outside, expecting to see some heat that would otherwise be negotiable, but the report deflates his enthusiasm as quickly as it swelled.

“One hundred degrees? With a seventy-degree dew point? Oh, hell naw,” he scoffs.

But after a few moments, Phoenix heaves a huge sigh. He wouldn’t risk damaging his delicate scales and skin if he could help it—this was certainly more of a safety issue over personal preference. Still, for these scalding summer days or those frigid winter nights, he always envisioned something a little different and more interactive than his beloved video games. Anything to get him standing and engaged....

The snake glances towards the empty corner of his apartment. It’s a leftover nook created by the finished bathroom in this basement space, no larger than six feet deep by about four feet wide. He could never think of a way to use this corner, except for perhaps storage. Yet storage would be quite an eyesore. If only something could be as much of a display as it was a functional piece of furniture… or a machine, or something.

Phoenix glances back at his laptop, biting his forked tongue. His eyes shift towards the camera, still snuggled up in his curled tail. Whatever he decides to do, he needs not answer to anybody. Especially if it involves his own money he works hard for.

He always did have an incredibly soft spot for pinball....

Phoenix opens up a new web page and begins browsing, heart beating excitedly once more.

FURSUIT DESIGNING TIPS

Hi, everyone! Olivier the space goat here with the segment on fursuit making and fursuiting in general.

Let’s talk about: Starting.

For this week we are focussing on:

Starting

All beginnings are hard. Trust me on that, but know that you will never gain the skills you need for making a suit without… actually making a suit! I tried my best to have these segments in an logical order of execution, and by following this, I hope the skills grow as you go. So, by all means, do reach out if you are stuck. Look up YouTube videos and tutorials and ask other makers (like in my Discord server). You are able to do much more than you can imagine right now.

And know it's okay to fail too! In my opinion nothing is more fun than failing… With my personal suits, I always roll with the punches and see where the flaws get me. So, take a breather if you mess up, assess the damage, and see how to grow from there. If you got glue on fur, let it cool and calmly brush it out. If you cut down the fibers, see how it is if it's shaved. If your fur is cut upside down, maybe see how it looks all put together; it might be extra fluffy!

It's already not as planned, so learn from your mistakes before you recut the part and go the safe route. Also, never feel bad about commissioning certain parts of the things you make. I am not skilled enough (yet) to 3D print my own headbases or work with silicone (yet), so buy those parts. I am learning, but it goes slow and that's okay too. Also, see how I added the ‘’yet’’ in what I said.

A big part of the mind set of starting is being open about the path you are taking. If you narrow your view down to ‘’I can't do this,’’ you will never be able to do it. Once you add a ‘’yet’’ behind it, it's more open, and you are giving yourself the space to learn and grow. So, just go at your own pace. You got this!

Until then, and if you have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out to me through Instagram or join my Discord server.

PHOTOGRAPHY 101

Hello, friends and photografurs! Welcome back to this week's Photography 101! I'm your co-host, Jaden and I'm super excited to bring you my first segment after our long break! It's been three months since my last segment but I'm back and super excited to share what I've been up to in those three months!

Let's talk about: using a polaroid SX-70.

If you've been an avid reader of Furry Weekly and photography 101 for a while you might already know how much of a fan I am for polaroid cameras. Recently I got my hands on my dream camera, a polaroid SX-70! I had an amazing time learning the ins and outs of this camera and all its little quirks and I'm going to share what I learned with you!

The first thing I noticed with this camera is how user friendly it is. This was by far the easier polaroid I've ever used and was the fastest to learn. I think what made this camera so easy to use was its focus dial. You see, most polaroid cameras have a fixed focus which means the focus is not adjustable; to focus the camera you have to physically move the camera forwards and backwards and hope what you’re seeing in the viewfinder is just a cloudy lens from the age of the camera and not your photo being completely out of focus. This fixed focus is still something I struggle with when it comes to polaroid cameras that have this, partially because as a DSLR user it's so distant to what I'm used to and have been used to for over a decade. But with the SX-70, the camera uses a dial to control the focus of the lens which offers an experience that is very familiar to what I'm used to and overall stream lined the experience.

Despite the focus dial making it easier to focus, one of the things I struggled with was the exposure dial. None of my photos were turning out properly which was a major disappointment with the price of polaroid film. That was, until I found out that for this specific polaroid camera model, the standard setting on the exposure dial that is meant for standard outdoor lighting conditions doesn't work with the film meant for the camera! You actually have to set the camera's exposure dial about 1/3rd towards darken. After I figured out that small little hitch (and wasted a $20 film pack in the process) I was amazed and the quality of photos this camera takes after 50 years had me shocked!

A polaroid photo of a concrete pathway in a forest.

I do believe I still need to fine tune my exposure a little better, but even with that into consideration this is still an amazing photo for such an old camera!

The SX-70 was by far the easiest polaroid to learn and get the hang of and takes some of the best photos of any polaroid camera i've used so far! Now, will this camera replace my DSLR? I wouldn't go that far!

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

That concludes this week's segment! If you have any questions or would like to share your photos, don't be afraid to shoot me a message (now available on Bluesky)!

FURRY QUOTE

Hello, everyone! This is Danielle coming back to enlighten your day with an inspiring video game quote.

A quote by Shadow the Hedgehog from the Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 video game.

“If the world chooses to become my enemy, I will fight like I always have!”

~ Shadow the Hedgehog

Unfortunately, the Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 video game didn’t have the best reputation due to its common glitches and controls. Thus, Sonic the Hedgehog: Project ‘06 was born! Sonic Project ‘06 was developed by a programmer named ChaosX for Microsoft Windows as an unofficial remake of the game in order to improve and fix the issues the original Sonic ‘06 game had, as well as to restore content scrapped during development. As of April 2023, the project has had five demos released. For more information about project ‘06, feel free to check out this Wikipedia page.

In the original Sonic ‘06 game, you get to play as three hedgehogs: Sonic, Shadow, and Silver. To keep it mostly spoiler-free, you battle against a new enemy with Shadow when he says this memorable quote at the end of his story. The quote very much resonates with what came about in Shadow’s story and what leads up to it after he says this quote to the enemy. I chose this quote to share with all of you because of how much this can also resonate with many of you in your everyday lives.

Sadly, we can unintentionally create enemies and sometimes even intentionally create them out of toxicity, hatred, and the like. Fighting your enemies like how Shadow did in Sonic ‘06 isn’t the moral of this message, but rather as a metaphor to keep living your life while being present in the moment despite the obstacles. You’ll develop setbacks along the way, but those don’t have to stop you. No one knows you better than yourself; you are meant for something greater. Live the life you desire, become the best version of yourself, and happiness shall prevail.
