FURRY OF THE WEEK

Hello, everyone. My name’s Danielle, and welcome back to another edition of Furry of the Week!

This week we’re here to highlight Brian for his charity contribution towards StarlightUS!

Artwork by CupcakeCreature.

Starlight Children's Foundation invites content creators, gamers, and individuals to stream content and raise money to deliver happiness to seriously ill kids. One of their main campaigns runs from March 10th (Mario Day) to March 31st.

This charity was first started by Furries United Network, a stream team on Twitch working together to share communities through cooperation and collaboration. Anyone joining the campaign acts as a sub-streamer, and Brian became just that. Brian will be continuing to stream throughout the month of March every Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday (except the 17th) until the campaign ends on the 31st. His goal is to raise $200 for StarlightUS, and Furries United Network has already raised over $5,500 as of March 12th. That is amazing!

For more information on the charity event, feel free to check out Furries United Network’s calendar here. You can also connect your stream through Tiltify by clicking on the support campaign button if you’d like to join in on the fun. There’s plenty of streamers to check out for this event! If you’d also like to support and watch Brian’s streams for the charity, feel free to check out his Twitch.

Congratulations on being Furry of the Week, Brian! Thank you for your heartfelt contribution to StarlightUS! I hope you and Furries United Network reach your goal as well.

~~~~~~~
That is all for this edition of Furry of the Week.
We’re always on the lookout for candidates to feature for their amazing contributions to the community. If you have any questions about this segment or would like to send us a recommendation for a future candidate, feel free to contact Fizzy or me. Tune in next time for another mystery Furry of the Week! I’ll see you guys next time. Bye for now!
ART CORNER
Thank you for joining me for Art Corner this week! My name is Yeshua. Your usual host Multifurse will be back for issue 259!
This week we have a couple of neat pieces to share, so I hope you’re ready for them!
Also, we are looking for a co-host for this segment. If you enjoy the art you see in the fandom, and particularly writing about it, this could be something for you! If you’re interested, just contact me, Yeshua, at one of my social media.
Let’s get into this week’s features though!
First up is Alyssa with some neat traditional art!
It’s not very often you see art with multiple characters, and much less traditional art! The art style definitely leans toward the toony side; the characters look straight out of a cartoon! This piece genuinely reminds me of something like Tiny Toons or other cartoons with small anthro characters. The anatomy is all spot on for a toony style; you have great proportions for areas like the paws, although you can tell there’s one character with claws and even one with hands! Then there’s the ears and muzzles of all the characters, all of which also help with the anthro appearance. The facial expressions are also a highlight. All the characters are very expressive, and their big eyes are a nice feature of the toony style. And I can’t finish without mentioning the coloring. The coloring is all very smooth and there are even some areas with some nice depth! All in all, this is a very fun piece that was well executed in all areas. Nicely done!
~~~~~~~

Next is Bread presenting a very cool full body!

This is a very colorful piece that’s just a joy to see! Here we have a style I’d describe more as chibi. There are some body parts that look a little larger than the rest of the body – like the paws. The line art is one very good feature that defines the character very well, and along with the very precise coloring and shading, it all makes for a pretty aesthetically pleasing piece! Something I find very interesting is the sort of “liquid” effects that surround the character. I’m not too sure how else to describe this, but I’m referring to the bits of color that seem to come off the character at its sides; the effect is one I can’t say I’ve seen before, but it fits the overall style and colors of the piece. Other elements like the shading and the depth and shine in the eyes also make the piece visually pleasing. Lovely work, no doubt!

~~~~~~~
Unfortunately that’s all I have for this week, but be sure to tune in next time for more! And remember we’re looking for some help doing this segment, so if seeing and talking about furry art is something you enjoy, please consider helping us!
Remember you can submit your own work to be featured in this segment by using the tags #furryweekly and #artcorner! We look primarily on Instagram and Twitter, though you can also contact me directly or our usual host, Multifurse if you’d like to submit your work!
Thanks for reading this section, I hope you enjoyed checking out the two pieces we had today! Until next time, take care!
WRITING SHOWCASE
Hello, everybody! My name is Dozu, and I bring you today a new story to feast your eyes upon!
~~~~~

"Wh...what happened?"

The voice was weak but audible in the now eerily quiet cave. Everyone looked down to find a very dazed and confused Dozu. He was sitting on his legs and rubbing his head, eyes unfocused.

Everyone took a second before they started cheering and hugging the poor dog who had no clue what was going on.

"Haha! Hey guys stop that, I can't breathe!"

Dozu said, being smothered by fur and fluff from his friends all trying to hug him at the same time. They had Dozu back! And that dark entity, The Outcast, was no more!

"How DARE YOU, FOOLS!!" Came a voice from the back of the cave, startling everyone. It was Orion, up and ready to fight. Cocoa Puff, with the angriest look she could pull off, approached him and said,

"Keep your friend and never come back!"

She then used her staff as a baseball bat to swing the lost soul of The Outcast at his only friend. Orion caught it and quickly binded it to a round gem. he shouted at the friends

"This is not over!"

And with that he scurried out of the cave, never to be seen again, hopefully.

"A Full Day"

By JPrimal64

Summary: Altara, a hacker who works at a secret base behind a laundromat, has to get a gift for their friend Nathan's birthday, who has gone into hiding and is pursuing a music career. What to get him?

Highlights: This story is very well written with easy flow to it. The characters and places are well described along with their emotions and thoughts. Good job!

For improvement: The background image is distracting from the text which is sometimes hard to read in spots. An easy fix would be to put the image at the beginning of the story and have the normal black background. Other than that a few spelling mistakes but nothing that hinders the reading flow.

Question time! Answer in a post and tag @FurryWeekly and @DoggyDozu if it’s on Twitter!

  • What was your first job like?

  • What do you currently do for a living?

~~~~~
"And that kids, is how I got this super cool ancient staff!"
Dozu said. It had been five years since that incident and Orion was fortunately never seen again.
"No way all that happened Uncle Dozu!"
"It's true! Ask your mother."
Right as he said that Cocoa Puff passed by with some food. It was her youngest's birthday party after all.
"Uncle Dozu, are you scaring the kids with your stories?"
She said in a fake angry tone.
"Just telling them how I got my staff! You were there so you should know better than anyone that this one is not just a story!"
Cocoa Puff laughed out loud.
"That is true, that one is no story but pure fact."
The three little foxes 'wow'ed and the oldest asked,
"Even the giant spider part?!"
Right at that moment a new guest arrived. Upon her eight-legged steed was Lucky. She hopped off Mamma Spider giving her some pets then looking at the three little kids whose jaws were on the floor.
"Hey kiddos, what did I miss?"
~~~~~~~~

That will be all for today folks. I hope you have enjoyed my pick and my story!

Let’s give our authors a round of applause for their hard work! Remember to include the tags #FurryWeekly and #WritingShowcase in your posts if you want us to see your own writing on any platform! See you all next time, and now I'll sashay away.

ART 101

Hello everyone! I am Fika Monster, the hipster otter, and I will be the segment host for Art 101 here at Furry Weekly! Before we start out on this artistic journey, I think it’s a good idea to introduce myself and what this series will be like.

I’m a 27 year old male from Sweden and a neuroatypical hobbyist artist that works in traditional media. I have gone to art school for several years and I have a passion for learning, deconstructing, and communicating ideas. Themes and topics that I especially like exploring in art and writing include alienation, different mental states and perspectives like neurodiversity or being queer, nature, the juxtaposition of the silly and the bizarre, animals, and furries. Big shock, I know! Here is some of my recent work:

With this series I want to both teach all of you the 101’s of art, but also a bit of life wisdom and various helpful concepts. Each week will start out with the theme of the week, a mental concept to learn, then an art lesson, finishing with some homework for all of you so you can apply what you have learned this week. I will also include past week’s homework in the magazine with a bit of light constructive feedback to encourage everyone's creativity and help everyone see that even homework can be interpreted and done in wildly different ways. And at the end, we’ll have some finishing thoughts with an artistic quote of the week, and an artistic resource that I find especially valuable for all of you that want some extra credit!

But enough introductions…

Let's start Art 101!

WHAT IS ART AND HOW DO I BECOME GOOD AT ART?

What even IS art?

Well, art is defined in tons of ways. My own favorite definition is:

“Art is any activity that is done for self-expression and can be in any medium. It is usually impractical for everyday life, but filled with meaning and ideas. It requires the intent of a human, and so naturally occurring things can be beautiful, but not art. Some objects, like furniture or pots, can be art to varying degrees, and hold artistic value while being practical or commercial.”

In this series, we will be delving into the visual arts, and how you can improve at them. While music, literature, photography, dance, and film are all valid forms of art with beauty and depth to them, we will be focusing on things like drawing, painting, and mixed media such as collages.

Art is often entirely in the eye of the beholder, and deeply subjective. But there are deep principles and “laws” that make certain art better than other art. If you learn and master them, the odds that someone will be deeply touched by your art is greatly increased. Even if you have a specific vision of art, like making ugly, abstract, or weird art, learning the rules so you can break them is important.

How DO you learn these principles and “get good” at art? It can feel extremely daunting to see amazing artists and masterpieces, and then looking at your own creations that feel like garbage compared to them. You have no idea how the heck they do it, it seems like magic! But I promise you that ALL ARTISTS were beginners at some point. What you don’t see is the many many MANY hours of work, discipline and study to their current level.

First, let's delve into how the brain works when it learns something, and how it masters it. Our brain is made of millions of nerve cells. When we learn something, we form connections between nerve cells called synapses, which serve as roads that the nerve cells use to talk with each other using electricity. These roads are then reinforced with a fat called myelin, that makes the signals travel quicker and easier between the nerve cells. Another way to think about it is that these nerve cells and connections are a form of “mental muscles” that get stronger the more you use them. If you are distracted while learning something, then the myelin is scattered about and your muscles don’t improve. But if you are focused, then the myelin is put to good use, and the connections improve rapidly. This can be exhausting, just like physical exercise, so rest is important.

If you are a beginner at art, then you have almost no connections in the brain and the myelin in them is very low. So you have very weak mental muscles. But if you are a master of art, then you have many connections and high levels of myelin, and hence mental muscles. A secret is that you can always get more myelin: you don’t just “learn an art skill” and get done with it. You can always reinforce it and form more connections, no matter your skill level. Pros continue to practice the fundamentals for this reason!

But why is all this useful to know?

Well, it means that art isn’t just “a talent” that some people have and others don’t. It’s mental muscles that we build up over time with patience and focus. It doesn’t matter if you are old, have never done art before, or have some disability; just like everyone can get more physically fit, we can improve our brain and art, even if it takes more time for some than others.

This also means that if you know what you are doing and study art deliberately, you can make shocking amounts of progress in a surprisingly short time!

During this series of Art 101s, we will delve into these mental muscles, learn practices to strengthen them and in due time, you WILL see improvement if you focus, learn and practice. I promise you that it is possible.

But first, homework time! This week's homework is:

“Draw your fursona and yourself”

I want all of you to make any kind of art of both your fursona and your real life self. There are no additional standards. Use whatever materials or medium you want, any amount of time that you want, and go wild. Just remember to date the art and sign it so you know when you made it!

If you do make some art for this, either post it on social media and use the tags #furryweekly and #art101, or send it to the Furry Weekly social media accounts on Twitter or Instagram! We’re @FurryWeekly on both platforms. This way we can learn about you and so that we can see everyone's improvement in the future!

Before wrapping up, our art quote of the week:

“If you hear a voice within you saying, ‘you are not a painter,’ then by all means paint… and that voice will be silenced.”

-Vincent Van Gogh.

WRITING 101

Digital sunlight rains down on another three-dimensional model. However, this place isn’t a plaza packed with furniture—it’s a housing complex built up with numerous detailed buildings. Nice tree models sway in the nonexistent breeze. Cars occupy parallel parking stalls along building frontages and sit motionless in the streets, as if trying to mime their motions to observers. The only observers materialize at the main building’s entrance, and the hawk and camera quickly shake it off.

“Whew…” says Tad. He straightens his shirt, looking around. “Glad nothing went wrong there.”

The Camera chirrups in agreement. It swivels on the spot, taking in the clouds drifting lazily across the sky and the tree leaves fluttering on their own accord.

“Give it a few minutes. We’ll see if the new graphics card can keep up as all of the model’s components load in.”

They begin their stroll. Indeed, the buildings and landscape look lovely, but the important thing is that everything is running smoothly.

“Hey, I have something for this week. Want to hear it?”

~~~~~
Hello friends, and welcome to Furry Weekly’s Writing 101! I’m Bryce Griffin, here to get all you writers out there the inside scoop on literature tips and tricks. Let’s get started!
We continue our exploration of narrative tropes with perhaps the most common trope in storytelling media. Tropes in film and literature crop up time and time again because they are popular ways to depict characters, situations, or ideals. They may be beneficial or detrimental, but they nevertheless allow us to pin creative expressions to concrete definitions.
Plot Armor is the guarantee that the protagonist cannot die through most of the story because they are needed for plot progression.
Have you ever read an amazing series of events that should have annihilated the main character, only for them to show Death to his own Door? Or perhaps, by some wild coincidence, a plummet to the Earth at terminal velocity ends without as much as a scratch? You may have just witnessed a fine example of Plot Armor in action. Of course, the armor is not real, physical armor; it is metaphorical protection assigned by the author to the protagonist so that they may continue to advance the plot.
Imagine if James Bond didn’t have any of his gadgets to escape the centrifugal force chamber in “Moonraker.” Think of all the times Indiana Jones narrowly dodges death traps or defeats enemies on his path to treasures and well-kept secrets. What if Voldemort actually killed little Harry Potter? One way or another, a protagonist with Plot Armor can defy death. They always make it out alive to fight another day. They need to stay in the ring because they’re the main character!
Recall the following: Plot Armor is still a narrative trope. It can be used or discarded to the author’s content. George R.R. Martin’s “A Game of Thrones” is notorious for following a key character throughout many chapters or even several books, only for them to be unceremoniously killed off. It’s a great strategy because it works with the series’ universe; the reader never knows if the character they’re rooting for will be next on the chopping block.
Note also that Plot Armor does not safeguard your protagonist from any kind of injury. They can’t dodge everything thrown at them. In fact, they may not even live through the climactic battle. Exposing your protagonist to real dangers and subsequently inflicting serious (or even fatal) damage is a wonderful way to give a dangerous world the bite it deserves. Plot Armor doesn’t give your character a “Get Out of Jail Free” card to skip every encounter they come across. It simply offers the main character needed protection so that the story can reach a necessary resolution.
“I like talking about these kinds of tropes. It’s fun.”
The Camera nods its body. It had missed the past few discussions—one of them was because of this computer being built, and it really didn’t want to see any more dissected computer parts. So it certainly enjoyed getting caught up with the hawk.
Tad looks around at their surroundings. Nothing ever slowed down. The world ran smooth as butter, even as they walked around while Tad recited his segment. Everything looked and worked as it should.
“That computer upgrade looks like it’ll pay off,” he mumbled under his breath. “Maybe I should upgrade the magazine’s filming equipment as well....”
The Camera whips around in shock. Tad bursts into laughter.
“Kidding! I’m kidding! I’d never trade you in.”
If the Camera could breathe a sigh of relief (or fainted), it definitely would have.
FURSUIT FANATICS
Hihi, everyone, my name is talmorra and this is Fursuit Fanatics, the Furry Weekly segment where we meet interesting new folks, their fursuits, and discover those things that make them a special part of the furry fandom.
Today, I’m excited to introduce this week’s guest, previously featured in such skate media as Skateism and coming to us all the way from Sandefjord, Norway: Cherry, the skateboarding (and more!) furry!
Cherry is a skateboarding lioness who loves video games and Midwest Emo. In appearance, she is bright pink with white belly fur and accents as well as black sleeves, lower legs, eartips and spots. Cherry and her owner, Peach, both prefer the pronouns she/her and they/them works too, although she says they don't really care and just find it nice when people ask or want to use the right ones. Peach took her name from her first fursuit for practical reasons and because she always plays Peach in Mario games. Upon getting her second fursuit, she thought it fitting to stay in the fruit world since she also loves cherries and cherry flavor.
While Cherry isn’t Peach’s first fursuit, she is her first fullsuit. Made as a partial by South Korean fursuit maker, Aheun (although operations seem to be currently dormant) in 2018, Peach was unable to afford her. She saw Cherry put up for sale again in 2020 by Aurora Bloom who made some nice body modifications. Part of that was being a full suit, and Peach was able to afford it this time. Although Cherry is technically a second version (partial, then full) and is Peach’s first version, she also has another, partial version of the suit that Aurora kept named Kirā. Occasionally, Peach gets asked if that is her suit or told that another person has her suit and says she doesn’t mind, just finding it to be funny. Although Cherry has no special extras, she does like to accessorize and stylize with different clothing, outfits and the like, and hopes to be able to play around more with that in the future.
Peach enjoys skateboarding in public around her hometown but feels that most remotely safe places are fun. When fursuiting in general, she loves seeing all the curious faces; from kids smiling to even slurs cast by teenagers, she says “I live for it all!” While she thinks nothing beats public suiting, she does recount one Grunnlovsdagan (Norway’s Constitution Day): “My ex, my best friend and I actually got beaten up in suit once in my hometown by a group of like 20 or so teenagers, so that was pretty messed up, but this was on the celebration of our constitutional day, and hopefully a very rare occurrence.” She also thinks suiting at conventions is an amazing time and finds it nice to be able to blend in, although she also says “...sometimes you just want ALL the attention, haha.” Overall, Peach says she most truly feels comfortable “in this world” when she skates or fursuits, calling it a double home field advantage. Unfortunately, she is currently battling chronic illness and hasn’t found it easy to suit the past couple years. When her condition improves, however, she still plans to do more skating with Cherry: “I still have many tricks left to land.” She’d also like to get a picture of Cherry with a real, live lion (c’mon, furries..let’s make it happen!)
I did step outside my normal framework to comment:
TAHLMORRA: “I will say I thought that fursuit dancing was peak activity for most, then you come along.”
PEACH: “I guess dancing and skateboarding isn’t too far off from each other, or you can at least combine that too! Could be fun to see someone do some longboard dancing.”
With regards to conventions, she says that while she hasn’t been to many furry cons, she does try to always make it to NFC (Nordic Furry Convention). She prefers not to be too far from home, especially with current health issues, but says she always feels very much at home in Sweden and NFC: “It’s always a good time, always good to catch up with friends and of course make new friends and new memories with everyone.”
When asked about what led her to become a furry, Peach replied that she thought it safe to say she’d always had the ‘furry gene,’ but that she ultimately found the fandom around 2010-11 through the Star Fox community. “Like many furries, I might’ve had a bit of a crush on a certain blue vixen.” I must say, I am honestly surprised I don’t hear this more often. From there, she says she was drawn down the rabbit hole and mesmerized by all the beautiful art, cute fursuits and the idea of being an anthropomorphic “dream version of yourself” that you get to choose.
Even through the magical feel of it all and attending various furmeets and the like, she says the fandom kind of faded away when life got busier. Sometime in 2015, she met her (now) ex and told her about the furry fandom which, in turn prompted the ex to become a furry, too. That helped bring Peach and Cherry back into the fold and she became more active in the community again. Since then, she’s kept up with the fandom because “...honestly this community means a lot to me, even if I'm not the most active person or the one who takes the most initiative always.”
When asked why she decided she wanted to be a fursuiter, her answer was emphatic and deserves to be told in her own words: “Oh wow, what can I say... I can't imagine who wouldn't wanna be a cute fluffy animal if they could. I think a big part of the world's population is furry but they just don't know, or don't want to admit to it, because [they] have a skewed impression of what it is, or think that it has to be a whole lifestyle or this huge thing. All the haters are just jealous and insecure anyways, because who wouldn't wanna escape from reality for a little while and be a creature of your dreams? It's just fun to pretend, you know? Also, doesn't most everyone like all the cute talking animals in Disney movies and what not? That qualifies for being a furry in my opinion, it's just up to people whether they wanna use that label for themselves, I guess. Anyway, I think regular life can be so boring and mundane, so depressing sometimes, and fursuiting is the complete opposite of that for me. It's like a dream in real life, and everyone forgets about their dumb jobs and all the hell in the world for a moment.”
As for Cherry in particular, Peach says she basically fell in love with the “calm, yet fierce and playful expression” when she first saw the suit. In particular, she liked the black arms and legs as well as the black eyeliner and eyelids, thinking it makes her look a bit emo. She also loves pink and is a Leo, so the idea of a pink, “..or cerise if you will, hence the Cherry name idea,” lioness seemed to be pretty perfect.
Even though it’s not really her, she says she feels much more confident and a lot happier with herself than she believes she’d ever be able to feel otherwise, even though it’s not really her. “It might sound a bit dumb, but I feel so feminine and pretty when I'm Cherry, she's like everything I want to be, and by now I feel so connected to the suit and character that even in my brain, it really does feel like me, haha, and it's really euphoric!” Honestly, I think I can speak for much of the fursuiting fandom when I say I don’t find it to be dumb in the least.
When it comes to favorite things, Peach points out skateboarding and fursuiting as obvious. Music is also a very important part of her life, being a recording artist as well as a furry skater. Most of all, she says, are her family and friends: “Just hanging around, with people you love, eating good food, having a drink, taking a walk, playing video games, watching a shitty movie or just doing nothing... it's all good.” Dislikes, on the other hand, are currently focused on her illness and the effect it has had on her enjoyment of life. Finding it difficult at times, to care for and about the people and things that are meaningful to her, a major goal for her is getting back to good health and back to getting out and having fun. She strives “to make the world a better place one small step at a time.”
With regards to common misconceptions about furries and fursuits, as well as how they address them, Peach goes right for the elephant in the room: “ …the standard misconception I guess is that it's just a fetish, or that it's all about sex, and while that may true to a bigger or smaller degree to some furries, it's not a general truth. For me, it's just about having fun, expressing yourself and being weird, and also I love dressing up and dressing out, the idea of being someone else, or perhaps rather a furry dream version of yourself like I spoke of earlier. Nevertheless, I think it's perfectly okay if it's a sexual thing as well, as long as everyone involved are consenting adults, but when it comes to addressing that particular misconception, it's probably best not to talk excessively about it like I'm doing now, haha, or if someone asks, just be casual about it and say it's not a sexual thing, but for many, it is a sexual thing.” She goes on to say that furries are everywhere and that they are just as normal and just as weird as any community, but mostly pretty nice and alright.
Moving on to memorable fursuiting moments, she puts landing her first kickflip right near the top of the list. “It was like getting a second chance at landing it for the first time while being aware of how special that feeling really is.” Another special occurrence she recalls happened last fall at a small con in a neighboring city. She was struggling through a rough patch with health and relationship issues, but had been feeling somewhat better on a new supplement and a friend of hers had an extra ticket, so she went along. After catching up with her friend and some other furs and just after being out taking photos, she spotted a friend of hers that she hadn’t seen in two years. Knowing that the friend had been dealing with serious life issues herself she opened up her arms and “she came right up to me and hugged me tighter than anyone’s ever hugged me before.” As it so happened, her friend had never seen her as Cherry, knowing only that she had a new suit, but told Peach afterwards that she realized the moment she saw her. “She cried, and I cried inside the suit, and afterwards we had coffee and spoke for hours. I'll remember that hug forever.”
From NFC, very recently, Peach wanted to include another funny story: “I was hanging with my crew, in which a few of our friends were there for the first time and had no prior experience with furries, and I let one of them borrow Cherry. It was really fun watching him fool around and run into old friends of mine whom he had no idea who [they] were or why they were hugging him or telling him they'd seen Cherry on Twitter. So anyway, as we were taking a breather outside, a lynx walks up to us and starts interacting with us, throws a long scarf around our non-furry friend, and starts posing for pictures, until it basically evolves into a full on make out session between the two suits, and after the cute lynx leaves, he says completely confused from inside the suit, ‘that was the gayest lynx ever!’ Haha, long story short, though, our friend is definitely getting a fursuit now.”
And with that, we have unfortunately come to the end of another week’s installment of Fursuit Fanatics. I hope you all had fun meeting Cherry and Peach and enjoyed their stories as much as I did. If you think you’d like to learn more about them, or follow them online, you can find them at @ThiccLioness on Twitter for exclusively furry affairs on and at @BlondeMohawk on Instagram for mostly skating content. Also, you can find her “shitty emo music,” as she puts it, on most platforms under the name Blond Mohawk.
Remember, if you think you would like to be featured in Fursuit Fanatics or know someone who should, use or encourage others to use the tags #FurryWeekly and #FursuitFanatics on most platforms and who knows? Maybe you could be our next special guest! Be sure to stop by next time when, like in the first week of the month, we honor folk tradition and see March go out like a… goat?! (Somebody get me central casting on the line!)
Thanks all for stopping by and spending this time with us, I’m tahlmorra and I’m happy to have been your host for today. Stay safe, stay well, and stay furry!
PHOTOGRAPHY 101
Hello, friends and photografurs! Welcome to this week's Photography 101! I'm your host, Jaden (Discord @ Jaden711#0663). In today's issue, we’ll be going over a quick money saving hack that doubles as a nice artistic style!
Expired film is something a lot of people would never even think of using. I mean clearly because it's expired that means it's unusable right? But that's wrong! Expired film is still very usable, and in some aspects can even be better than fresh film. Let's go into some of those reasons.
With the price of film the cost of owning a film camera can quickly leave a hole in your pocket, but thankfully expired film usually comes in lots with much cheaper prices. For some film photographers this can make the difference on if they'll have film available to shoot on. But the cheap cost won't mean anything if it's useless scrap that you can't shoot on. Thankfully that isn't the case! Expired film can give a fun roulette and new artistic avenue to your photos; which we’ll look into next.
The chemicals within the film degrade over time, meaning that some colours will be either dulled or exaggerated and, in some cases, some weird effects can also be added to your photos - like odd blobs, dots, or a general haziness and out of focus look. While this sounds terrible on paper, it is an amazing way to add some artistic flair to your photos.
Source.
Expired film has almost a dream-like effect on your photos. It looks like you're capturing what you remember about a scene, not how you saw it, like traditional photography styles. It’s the perfect blend between surrealism and traditional and makes what would originally be flaws become their unique mediums worthy of admiration.
Source.
While such weird and obscure results may not fit some people's styles, it certainly would be an amazing way to leave your comfort zone and try new things! The best thing about expired film is every photo will be different, and even photos taken on the same roll of film will be completely different from each other! Expired film is like a trust fall with every snap and takes a lot of faith and trust in your abilities. But trust me, that confidence will bring you a long way and will give you photos with a unique style and feel, photos you never would've taken otherwise!
~~~~~~~

That concludes this week's segment! If you have any questions about using expired film or would like constructive criticism on your photos, don't be afraid to shoot me (Discord @ Jaden711#0663) a message!

FURSUIT DESIGNING TIPS

Hi everyone, my name is Olivier the space goat, your new host for Fursuit Designing Tips. Before we start, I would like to introduce myself!

I’m 24 years old at the time of writing this and a Dutch furry with about 13 years in the community. So if I end up saying funky stuff that's why. I have managed to, in these 13 years, keep the same fursona, something I have noticed is often not the case!

I have four years of theatre experience in sewing and special effects (SFX) makeup, and before that already made fursuits! But this extra knowledge did give me a very new view into making ‘’creature suits!”

I'm aware that today’s topic might not be a very interesting one for an article about fursuit making, but it was one of the first things that popped into my mind when I finished my first fursuit.

‘’How do I store this precious bean so I can enjoy them for as long as possible?’’

Allow me to help answer this question for you way ahead so you can prepare the things you might need.

A fully padded airbrushed quadsuit with resin base head, led eyes, silicone frills, a floor dragging tail and massive wings of course has other needs then a foam based partial with a nub tail and slim fit handpaws. Heck, all my suits are stored differently for their needs.

I have my realistic fursuit head of my fursona stored on a custom made ‘’trophy mount’’ so he is hanging on my wall on display. I have partials with some props and accessories in fabric storage bins. I have my first two fursuit heads with their paws and tails – which are now retired – in a smaller plastic bin with a lid. I have a full costume in a big shopping bag just because it fits. Finally, I have a large padded body suit, with massive feet paws and three floor drag tails stored in a 170 Litre plastic storage box in the basement.

What I often look for in storage are the following points:

☆How often do I grab this particular thing?

Heads, paws and tails often get used more, as they can be worn quickly. It is often possible to store the handpaws inside the head, which is a great thing to do. This keeps them close together so they won't be separated from the head and when grabbing it, you immediately have your paws too! Depending on if you choose to loosely place your head on display or in a storage container, in a closet, or somewhere else, you can put your tail together with it.

I know a lot of fursuiters prefer to put their heads in the storage container and then curl the tail over it to protect the eyes in case something accidentally goes wrong. Some even go as far as making or buying a custom bag for their heads! But this is something for another topic!

☆How much space does it take up?

Like I hinted above, a head, paws, and most common-sized canine or feline tails easily fit together in a 52 litre (13.7 gallon) bin. A full quadsuit will not. This will often need multiple storage boxes. Personally, I put the partial (i.e. head, paws, and tail) in one place, and body and feet (and sometimes even tail if it’s a large tail in a bigger storage container. I have that 175 litre (46.2 gallon) storage bin on wheels, which fits in most cars, and I'm absolutely in love with it! My biggest fursuit easily fits inside, with extra space for props and care items.

☆Can it withstand a bit of a beating?

Most toony fursuits are made from upholstery foam, while most realistic style suit heads are made from resin. This means that storing a resin head in a duffle bag can damage it, as resin can break if not correctly handled. Sometimes, a toony head isn’t upholstery foam, but instead is 3D-printed. 3D printed suit heads are more common these days and both toony and realistic use this media for the headbase. While tails and handpaws are often not as fragile, tough claws and spikes on the paws and tails can be. Always contact your maker if you have questions about these types of things.

If you are your own maker, you can contact the people you bought the materials from, and there are often communities for fursuit makers who want to help and share the knowledge they have!

☆How would I transport the item I'm storing?

In some cases you can easily put your suit items in a large suitcase. Other times a big shopping bag is the way to go.In some cases, you can even transport your suit in the container you store it in!

~~~~~~~
These are things to take into account when you store your fursuit.
I hope this article was fun to read, and would love to hear feedback or questions on the topic from you all in one way or another.
You can always contact me through Instagram if you have any comments or questions.
In the next article I'll be talking about what types of fursuits there are, and how these types of suits can affect your ‘’acting’’ and ‘’reacting’’ to the people around you.
See you then!
CONVENTION CALENDAR
Hello again, readers! I’m Shetani, your Convention Calendar segment host for this issue. March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb, so the saying goes, but no matter what kind of critter you are, you’ll find plenty of fun opportunities to gather with other furries this month. Let’s hear about March’s furry conventions and events happening online, around the world, and in your neck of the woods!
~~~~~

March’s furry fun starts off immediately with Gdakon, from Wednesday March 1 - Sunday March 5. The Novotel Gdańsk Marina Hotel in Gdańsk, Poland is host to this celebrated furry convention. If you ain’t afraid of no ghost, you’ll get a real treat from this year’s theme: Paranormal Spooktivity! The Gdakon schedule is already public, so furries can immediately begin planning their five days of fun. This year, Gdakon introduces a fursuit photoshoot and a snack exchange. Both of these events require signup in advance, so navigate to the Gdakon website if you’re interested in participating! While at Gdakon, keep an eye out for representatives from their charity Help4herps, a reptile shelter in Gdansk, and donate to assist them in continuing their great work. Gdakon requires a valid COVID-19 vaccination certificate.

VancouFur returns to the Sheraton Vancouver Guildford Hotel in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada from Thursday March 2 - Sunday March 5 for their annual convention. Beyond Furmageddon is the 2023 theme, so expect to see post-apocalyptic costumes from attendees and decorations from the con. Vancoufur offers a lot of unique programming beyond the typical furry convention staples, like their Cutie Pageant, ice cream social, escape room, and convention-wide scavenger hunt! This year’s Guest of Honor is Rahne, a dancer, DJ, writer and Twitch streamer. The Community Spotlight is Temrin, a freelance illustrator, streamer, and chairperson of CozyCon. Qmunity, a BC-based non-profit that works to improve queer, trans, and Two-Spirit lives, will have a presence too as 2023 charity of choice. While VancouFur doesn’t require proof of COVID vaccination this year, you will need to wear a mask at all times in convention spaces and adjoining hallways - including under fursuit heads.

Panels and meetups on a variety of topics, from fursuit making to writing and everything in between, are scheduled, so don’t forget to look at the Fur the ‘More website and find out what’s in store. While there, don’t miss performances by Musical Guest Tonya Song, a singer-songwriter, composer, and Native activist. Fur the ‘More requires face masks and proof of initial two COVID-19 vaccines. Furries who prefer a taste of the great outdoors in their furry events should look no further than Woods Flock, who's next event is being held Friday March 24 - Sunday March 26 of this year. This family-friendly camp event returns to Fall Creek Falls State Park in Spencer, Tennessee, USA for their second year. Quite aptly, the theme this time around is “To the Hundred Acre Wood,” recalling the fun-filled adventures of everyone’s favorite silly old bear, Winnie-the-Pooh. Prospective attendees can begin their own adventure by going over the schedule just posted to Woods Flock’s social media, wherein a blend of traditional camping activities and furry convention staples have been planned. Madshy, the Guest of Honor this year, will host a plushie picnic as well as a supersponsor brunch. Though details about the charity were not publicly available at press time, a special presentation and charity auction are also on the docket. Whether browsing the Maker’s Market, doing arts and crafts, fursuiting with friends, or making s’mores by the fire, a memorable weekend is guaranteed at Woods Flock!

Thaitails is making a splash at a new location, the Arnoma Grand Bangkok in Bangkok, Thailand, the weekend of Saturday March 25 - Sunday March 26. Themed Siam Sawasdee and featuring the artist Arashi Takemoto as Guest of Honor, 2023’s event will be the first in-person Thaitails since 2019. Keep Tahoe Furry is a brand-new outdoor furry event at the Granlibakken in Tahoe City, California, USA. Though the pandemic has thrown a few wrenches into the works, they’re finally ready to host their first event from Friday March 31 - Tuesday April 3 of this year. KTF bills itself as an alternative furcon without panels, dances, or scheduling, instead offering attendees an opportunity to create their own fun with friends and enjoy Lake Tahoe. Even so, there’s a fursuit sledding and group photo event planned for the last day of the con, and attendees are welcome to host their own small events. KTF is free to attend as long as you’re over 18 years of age, are vaccinated against COVID-19, and follow the venue’s mask guidelines. Website | Twitter | Telegram

This month’s calendar graphic is by Sunni/The_Real_Wolf_Artist, and features Shetani and our editor Zenith.

Here in the northern hemisphere, March means it’s time for the vernal equinox, heralding the coming of spring. We often associate springtime with beginnings, fresh starts, and turning over a new leaf. This is a great time to make new friends and get connected with your local furry community by helping out at a physical or online furry event.

This month, I’ll be attending Furnal Equinox in person for the first time, which is unbelievably exciting! If our paths cross at the convention, please come say hi and let me know you’re a Furry Weekly reader! Remember to keep up-to-date on vaxx boosters and wear your face mask when meeting up with any furs in person.

Got questions or suggestions for Convention Calendar? Feel free to drop me a line on Twitter and the Fediverse, or hit me up at any of the other platforms linked on my website. If there’s an upcoming con you want to ensure we cover here on Furry Weekly, don’t hesitate to let me know. Have fun and stay safe out there!
