ANIMAL OF THE WEEK
Hello everyone! It’s Zed Shirogane and it’s another animal of the week segment!
Animal of the week is a segment where we highlight an animal that is really cool, cute, creepy, or just plain fascinating. There will be a coloring page illustration for you all to print out and color in at home, as well as an adoptable character inspired by the animal of that week. The best part is, all proceeds made by said adopt will be donated to conservation charities. Whenever possible we do symbolically adopt the animal, but only some animals have the privilege to have that as an option unfortunately. Thus, we collect extra funds to donate to many different species conservation charities or send funds to scientists so that they can research underappreciated animal species, so we can in turn learn more about the world around us. Join us on this fun adventure!
It’s April, and the animal group for this month is the Nudibranchs!
Nudibranchs are a group of soft-bodied marine snails that shed their shells after their larval stage. They are noted for their often extraordinary colors and striking forms. Currently, about 3,000 valid species of nudibranchs are known. Nudibranchs are often casually called sea slugs, as they are a family of sea slugs within the phylum Mollusca, but many sea slugs belong to several taxonomic groups that are not closely related to nudibranchs.
Nudibranchs occur in seas worldwide, ranging from the Arctic, through temperate and tropical regions, to the Southern Ocean around Antarctica. They are almost entirely restricted to salt water, although a few species are known to inhabit lower salinities in brackish water. Nudibranchs live at virtually all depths, from the intertidal zone to depths well over 2,300 ft. Nudibranchs are benthic animals, found crawling over the substrate at the bottom of reefs and seas. They are unique looking animals with bizarre natural histories.
This Week’s Species: Blue Dragon Nudibranch (Glaucus atlanticus)
Characteristics
Glaucus atlanticus has many names: blue sea dragon, sea swallow, blue angel, blue glaucus, dragon slug, blue dragon, blue sea slug, and blue ocean slug. It is a species of small, blue sea slug, a pelagic (open-ocean) aeolid nudibranch.
Fun Facts
The blue dragon nudibranch makes use of countershading; the blue side of their bodies faces upwards, blending in with the blue of the water. The silver/gray side of the sea slugs faces downwards, blending in with the sunlight reflecting on the ocean's surface when viewed facing upwards underwater.
Habitat
These sea slugs are pelagic; they float upside down by using the surface tension of the water to stay up, where they are carried along by the winds and ocean currents. It has been recorded from the east and south coasts of South Africa, European waters, the east coast of Australia, and Mozambique. Although these sea slugs live on the open ocean, they sometimes accidentally wash up onto the shore, so they may be found on beaches.
Diet
The blue dragon nudibranch feeds on other pelagic creatures, including the Portuguese man o' war and other venomous siphonophores. This sea slug stores stinging nematocysts from the siphonophores within its own tissues as defense against predators. Humans handling the slug may receive a very painful and potentially dangerous sting.
Life Cycle
Like almost all heterobranchs, blue dragons are hermaphrodites. After mating, both individuals are able to lay eggs and can release up to 20 on an egg string, often laying them in wood pieces or carcasses. On average, G. atlanticus can lay 55 egg strings per hour.
Conservation
These creatures are so small that getting reliable estimates about their population is hard. It’s like looking for a splendid blue needle in a gigantic wet haystack. Therefore, it is hard to know if the number of blue dragons is growing or shrinking. What is known is the range in which you see blue dragons is changing. Researchers are finding them for the first time in new places like Taiwan or the Padres Island National Seashore in Texas. This is likely because of the impacts of climate change on ocean temperatures, storms, Portuguese Man O’War populations and more. Blue dragons are evidence that no animal is too small to feel the effects of our changing climate.
Here are some links to articles about the blue dragon nudibranch:
Adopt
All funds from this adopt will go to animal conservation. The goal for this month is to save up to donate to Reef Check California as a way to keep our reefs that sustain our nudibranchs healthy, which requires a total of $100. This adopt will be one of 5 total created to achieve this goal and hopefully more, extra funds are pooled together to be donated to conservation research programs. It will be available for $30 at Shirogane Studios.
Coloring Page
Enjoy this coloring page made by yours truly, for you! Feel free to print it out at home to color in, or if you enjoy the design feel free to purchase it on a multitude of products.

ART CORNER
Hello, everyone! I’m Multifurse and welcome to Art Corner! I’ve got some great art to share with y’all this week, so let’s get started!
First up this week is a gorgeous half-body by patheticcat_doodles!
Oh my goodness I love this piece! The pose is super cute, and I absolutely adore the expression on the character. It’s so cute and happy! Mitt did an excellent job with the anatomy as well! The muzzle is very well defined and shaped, and the teeth are accurate! And, of course, who could forget the hands? These are so well done they almost look like a photo! The shading in this piece is beautifully blended; the shadows meld into each other perfectly, and the highlights are just bright enough to offset the deeper shadows. Overall, this is a beautiful piece, Mitt, excellent work!
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
Next up this week is a beautiful headshot by cyberspace_art!
This is so cute! I love how Cyber’s drawn this smiley little manokit! The first thing I’d like to point out is how well the species’ anatomy was portrayed. The boxy snout and the long, laid back ears are very well drawn, making this lil’ guy very recognizable as a manokit! The colors are beautiful as well, and I love the little texture details in this. It’s always the little things that add an extra spark to an art piece, and the small, thin texture lines to show fur are just that! The cell shading is also well-handled and adds some nice depth without being overwhelming. Great work, Cyber!
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
The last piece this week is a haunting and gorgeous full scene by vronyakat!
This piece is so beautiful, I can’t even begin to describe it! There’s so much going on here, from the spirit to the outfit to the gorgeous detailing on the character’s hair, I love all of it and I have no idea where to begin! I’ll start with the outfit, though, because that’s as good a spot as any to start, especially because of the sheer fabric. Not only is the fabric rendered to be see-through, but it’s also got the sheen and highlights that normal sheer fabric would have beneath a light source! It’s beautiful, and I love that the highlights really show off that rich purple color! The details in the character’s hair are absolutely gorgeous as well, and I LOVE the lighting! The little spirit is an excellent light source in this piece that allows for some really bright, vibrant highlights. Absolutely gorgeous work, Vronya!
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
That’s all for this week! Many thanks to our artists, Mitt, Cyber, and Vronya for allowing me to feature their works this week! If you liked what you saw, check out their pages and drop a follow if you feel so inclined!
If you’d like a chance to be featured in Art Corner, make a post using the tags #FurryWeekly and #ArtCorner so I can find you, or message me directly on my Instagram or DeviantArt!
Thanks for joining us, and see you next time! Multifurse, out!

WRITING 101
Multiple lanes of vehicles whiz by, one right after the other. This large swath of highway in the busiest part of Virginia holds countless commuters early this spring morning. Cars, pickups, SUVs, tractor-trailers, you name it… all rely on this critical transportation artery to get people where they need to go. Among them, in his own little black hatchback, is a hawk dressed in a checked button-down shirt and khakis. Both compliment his ruddy brown feathers rather well.
“Good thing this isn’t out of my comfort zone,” mutters Tad, barely audible over the tire noise and the wind buffeting off of the vehicles around him. He glances over at the Camera, strapped tightly into the passenger seat, and asks, “How are you holding up over there?”
The Camera offers a weak nod. Tad can’t help but smile.
“Don’t worry. You’re in good hands.”
At that moment, a sports car whizzes by and weaves between several other travelers. It quickly disappears amongst the sea of cars. The Camera stares, then glances up at the hawk.
“Like I said,” says Tad, chuckling. “Completely safe with me.”
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
Hello friends, and welcome to Furry Weekly’s Writing 101! I’m Bryce Griffin, here to get all you writers out there the inside scoop on literature tips and tricks. Let’s get started!
Tropes in film and literature crop up time and time again because they are popular ways to depict characters, situations, or ideals. They may be beneficial or detrimental tropes, but they nevertheless allow us to pin creative expressions to concrete definitions. Today, we’ll examine what pushes a villain beyond what most people will consider “the point of no return” for a character.
A black hole’s event horizon is a space around its singularity where nothing, not even light, may escape the black hole’s gravitational pull. Apply the same concept to an antagonist: perform an action or commit a crime so despicable, and no further intervention will redeem that antagonist’s moral character. If, somehow, this character is atoned for their sins, then they never crossed the horizon in the first place.
It’s important to note that the character is irredeemable. This means they truly establish themselves as evil, which is far beyond power-hungry, ill-tempered, or just plain rude. Any self-initiated attempt at redemption must therefore go unanswered. They are now (and always will be) an evil character, and no explanations of dark and troubled pasts or a speech about how they hold “moral high ground” should hold weight. They have twisted their own view of the world beyond anything considered respectable or understandable to the protagonist. No amount of wrong turns should lead to a right turn, and this is especially true for a character that has fallen past the Moral Event Horizon.
There are a few exceptions. The largest exception is where a part of a story (or the whole story) is subjected to “negative continuity”; that is, everything is “reset” to the story’s general status quo. Consider long-running shows where every episode begins with the same general premise, like SpongeBob SquarePants. SpongeBob once buried a beach goer neck-deep in the sand at Goo Lagoon, then left him with Bubble Buddy as the tide rolled in. He also destroyed or indirectly contributed to destroying Bikini Bottom on multiple occasions. Does SpongeBob’s gross negligence of letting a fish drown make him irredeemable? Does his cluelessness as the city falls to its knees push him past the Moral Event Horizon? Absolutely not; everything will always return to normal by the start of the next episode. No action SpongeBob performs will have an impact on his moral character. He is and always will be the lovable goofball we’ve known since 1999.

“Here’s our exit.”
Tad smoothly pulls into the exit lane and decelerates. This interchange is a spaghetti-like mess of soaring concrete roadway and supports. It’s an incredible feat of engineering; perhaps they could admire it on another day when they weren’t headed on their way to work.
After the tight looping off-ramp, blue and red lights blink on the shoulder of the road. It’s a Virginia State Trooper, and he’s got a familiar sports car pulled over.
“Heh,” says Tad as they pass the scene. “See? Always obey the rules of the road.”
The camera briefly whirrs in relief and visibly relaxes in its seat.

FURSUIT FANATICS
Hihi and welcome! I’m tahlmorra, your host for this week’s installment of Fursuit Fanatics, the Furry Weekly segment where we get to meet interesting furs with interesting fursuits and learn all about them. Today our guest comes all the way from the broad and sweeping savannas of… Denver, Colorado. Okay, so maybe it’s not all open grasslands and sub-Saharan charm, but there is one thing it has in common with the dark continent and that is where this week’s guest comes in. Please say hello to our fursuiter for the week: Nala the Elephant!
Nala, as both the suit and suiter are known, is an African Bush elephant who goes by the pronouns she/her. In appearance, she is covered in markings in various shades of brown and cream, has light blue ears and fluff, and eye shading from purple to blue. She also sports a blue mane that runs from her head down her neck and has light grey toes and tusks. She finds herself often mistaken for a mammoth, but she is definitely all elephant.
Nala is the suiter’s third suit, but it’s the first of Nala and her first commissioned suit. This suit was paid for back in 2019 but didn’t arrive until this year, a day before Valentine’s. She was made by Pyrope Costumes, a fursuit maker based out of Mexico. She has two sets of Velcro eyelids to change her expression to either angry or sad and has plans to get sushi collar and dino chicken nugget props down the line.
Future plans for Nala include attending lots of fur meets local to her area, going to DenFur later this year and hopefully making content with her. She’s currently on TikTok but aims for Instagram and possibly Twitch in the future.
When it comes to public suiting, Nala prefers being with a group, so furmeets are a logical choice for doing so. Sharing that she is unfortunately chronically ill, having her handler present to keep an eye on her and make sure she’s doing all right is a huge help. For suiting activities, Nala loves playing games, walking around, doing photo shoots and being a goof, “...anything I can get my big ol’ stompers to do,” is fair game for this fun-loving pachyderm.
When asked about being a furry and when she feels she became one, Nala says it was way back in eighth grade around 2015. She had been drawing anthro characters before that time but, being a child, was put off by the “dark aspect” of the fandom. At some point, a family member showed her furry dance competition videos and something “just sort of clicked in my brain that I wanted to be a part of that.” Since she was little, she’s loved anthro characters and has never stopped loving them. As she’s grown, she says, she has come to appreciate the people behind the characters and has met people she would never think of meeting through the fandom. “It’s truly amazing all the kind and supportive people you can talk to,” she says.
As to why Nala chose to become a fursuiter herself, she says that she has always loved the fursuits in the way that they looked and how the people in them acted. She also says that she has awfully bad social anxiety and that fursuits help her overcome that. When she was fifteen, she got her first fursuit: a collie named Boba. Boba was partial and Nala said she was just so happy to have him. As for the Nala suit, she says Nala is her main fursona and is how she sees herself as an anthro: “I’ve never loved a character as much as I love Nala and I knew she needed a suit as soon as I had her.” It was only a few months after the creation of the Nala fursona that Nala the suit was commissioned. She says, “I’ve poured my heart in this character and she means the world to me!”
With regards to Nala’s design, she says there isn’t really any significance to it. Nala was originally a custom that she got from one of her favorite artists, Cyberhound. She says that she spent a good hour typing up a description of what she wanted Nala to look like and couldn’t even wait for them to finish, doodling her out before the first ref sheet was ever finished. She says she really enjoys brown and blue characters and finds the neutral colors pleasing to her eyes, picking colors that she says “matched her vibe.”
Finally, when asking about Nala’s views on misunderstandings and misconceptions surrounding fursuiting and the furry fandom, she says that her own opinions on the matter have changed as the years have gone by. For example, she feels that the idea that the sexual side of the fandom is only a small portion of the whole, as held by the community, is not inherently true. She explains that the furry community is deeply rooted within the queer community which is known for its acceptance and positivity. However, adult-centric activity aside, there are many good safe for work spaces and activities for people to do. “I get really tired of this back and forth of the reputation of the fandom, I think people care about it too much. We shouldn't care what others think and we need to be respectful to each other and others’ boundaries.” She feels that public and private spaces, as well as their uses, should be respected as well. She believes that everyone is in the community for various reasons, and we just shouldn’t worry too much about what others think of us. “I’ll happily inform people of my own experiences within the fandom, but each fur is different, so trying to address things you do and don’t like is very difficult.”
Wrapping things up, Nala says she enjoys cooking, gaming, digital art, reptiles, sushi, cuddles, and nature in general. On the other hand, she is not at all fond of warm weather, scrambled eggs and people who lie. Her current primary goal is to move out and live with her boyfriend for a while. She says that one day a small family would be nice, but for now just small, little life improvements are nice when they can be made.
If you’d like to follow Nala and keep up with her happenings, you can find her on Twitter - @Nala_Elephant, on TikTok - @Nala_Elephant and Furaffinity - Dawnymoomoo
If you think you’d like to be featured on Fursuit Fanatics, or know someone you think should, just post photos of your suit with the tags #FurryWeekly and #FurryFanatics on most platforms; you just might be hearing from me to be the next fur featured here at Furry Weekly.
Once again, I’m tahlmorra, your Fursuit Fanatics host, and I look forward to seeing you next time around. Stay safe, stay well, stay furry..!

PHOTOGRAPHY 101
Hello, friends and photografurs! Welcome to this week's Photography 101! I'm your host, Jaden (Discord @ Jaden711#0663). In issue 256 we talked about polarizing lens filters, a unique tool to filter out certain wavelengths of light to remove reflections and boost the contrast of certain colours. Today we’ll be talking about a similar tool that's very different in its application.
Neutral Density Filters (or ND filters) block out light to make your photos appear darker. This small but important difference is what separates them from the previously talked about polarizing lens filters. Polarizers block out only certain wavelengths whereas neutral density filters block out ALL wavelengths, making your photo appear darker. This seems horrible at first, I mean, who wants dark photos, right? But it actually allows you to increase your aperture and shutter speed in harsh lighting conditions, allowing you to take beautiful portrait photos of people or fursuiters outdoors in the daytime without having to sacrifice the lighting of the photo or the aperture.
Another amazing use of ND filters is they allow you to have a shutter speed that would otherwise be impossible to have in harsh lighting conditions. This allows you to give waves or clouds a sort of dreamy smooth effect as shown below
There are a bunch of different ND filters on the market that have very small differences. Because of these small differences, we’ll only be taking a look at the main two, fixed and variable. Fixed ND filters have only one setting, this setting will be represented like ND2 all the way to ND 10000; the higher the number is, the more light the filter will block out. Variable ND filters are filters that can be rotated to block out an entire range of light from ND2-ND200 or anything beyond or in between. Depending on where you buy these from, a variable ND filter will be around the same price as a fixed ND filter, so I would recommend buying a variable ND filter over a fixed ND filter too, so you can easily change between ranges without having to go through the struggle of screwing and unscrewing the filters whenever your lighting changes.
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
That concludes this week's segment! If you have any questions or would like constructive criticism on your photos, don't be afraid to shoot me (Discord @ Jaden711#0663) a message!

FURSUIT DESIGNING TIPS
Hi all, Olivier here with a new article on fursuit making, and I'll be talking about the tools needed for fursuit making. I hope from the last article you could have thought about what style of fursuits you'd like for your personal suit, and can now start and gather your supplies you need to start working on it!
While needing is a big word, this article will tell you about tools that make life a lot easier when it comes to fursuit making. I’ll be talking from personal experience, so know this is not some holy word; if you find stuff to work better for you that's amazing! And please share that with me! I’d love to hear what you find! And if someone tells you not to use certain stuff, that's cool too, this is just what I personally find to work the easiest and most comfortable.
-A hot glue gun and glue sticks: for making the head and glueing down the fur. For fursuit heads it's almost a must to have these!
-Eyemesh/buckram: to hide your own eyes and still see through
-Needle and thread: I personally use a C needle as I find it easier to work with, but an ordinary one works too.
-Ducktape or masking tape: for making your fur patterns.
-Exacto knife/scalpel and fabric scissors: for cutting foam, fur and fabric.
-A mannequin of sorts: easy for making body suits, duct tape dummies work wonderful! And when we enter the territory of "full body suits" we will tackle that one!
-A red, black and green permanent marker: these are to draw on the tape pattern. I find it easiest to sketch with green, mark with black and fix with red. You can do it in one colour of course too – at times I'm too lazy to follow my own rules.
-Wonder clips and sewing pins: it helps keep stuff together when sewing.
-Eva foam and upholstery foam: if you make your own headbase you will need these; upholstery foam is mostly used for a headbase, and Eva foam is used for ears sometimes.
-A knife sharpener: helps keep your blade sharp so cutting goes easier and you get straighter edges. This is not a must, but it does make life a bit easier.
-An electric bread knife: helps cutting through thick upholstery foam easiest. I personally find them a bit of a hassle, but know a lot of makers use them!
-A mannequin head: This could also be a styrofoam wig head. You can keep putting your head base on your head to test sizing – and to be honest I advise test fitting every now and then – but for furring and building your head it's easy to own a mannequin head.
-Oven bake clay/super sculpey: for claws and teeth overall, and lips and eyelids on realistic suits. You can use air dry but it's more fragile and breaks easier on you in my opinion.
-Acrylic paint, sturdy brushes/an airbrush: for finer markings on your fur or blending transitions between colours!
-A pet brush: most people I know prefer slicker brushes, but be careful with pulling out fur on them!
⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰
I hope this article was fun to read, and would love to hear feedback or questions on the topic from you all in one way or another. Do you have a personal favorite tool? Have I forgotten something? Please let me know!
In the next article I'll be talking about the first stage of actually designing a character to use to make your fursuit!
Hope to see you there and know you can always contact me through Instagram @olivierthespacegoat to suggest a topic or ask a question!

CHARACTER INTERVIEW
Hi everyone! Thank you for joining us for the Character Interview segment! I’m Yeshua, and I’m here to bring you another fun conversation with a cool member of the fandom! I gotta say, there’s a lot of real interesting stuff to talk about with today’s guest, and I’m incredibly excited for it. Let’s not waste any time and just get straight into it!
YESHUA: Today I have the pleasure of sitting down with Chester the Geroo! Thank you for joining me, it's really good to have you! To start, would you mind introducing yourself for those who are seeing you for the first time?
CHESTER: Hi Yeshua! I'm stoked to be here. By the way, your office has a great view, and this leather sofa is really comfortable. And hello reader! I'm a geroo from far far away, who travels the country singing for food. I've been performing for a few years now and love singing for my friends! When I meet someone new, their first question usually is, "What's a Geroo?" I'm an alien from the Hayven Celestia universe, which is full of interesting creatures and a rich history; I recommend checking out novels that chronicle the history of my species, including Rick Griffin's series titled "The Final Days of the White Flower II," and Gre7g Luterman's "The Kanti Cycle" trilogy.
YESHUA: Thank you! Definitely make yourself comfortable! You mentioned so many interesting things and I hope we can chat about it all! Let's focus on your singing first. You say you've been performing for a few years, and I've noticed on your social media that you often do this in fursuit! I'd love to hear more about this and the kind of singing you do!
CHESTER: Well, I've always been a musician, ever since I was a cub aboard my old ship. Since being marooned on Earth, I quickly absorbed many rich cultures, and grew fond of classical music. The air here is richer than I was used to in space, so I can sing strongly with orchestras in opera houses and symphony halls. It's an absolute thrill, and I try to share as much as I can online!
YESHUA: It's very interesting seeing you pick up classical music; I gotta say, it's not something I usually see folks talk about! But the performances you give are simply stunning! I can definitely tell how strong your voice is and it's seriously impressive. I've definitely noticed that you do share what you can online.
CHESTER: Thanks so much! I've worked really hard to perform at my level. I grew up playing piano, and have trained my voice since high school; it took initial talent, training in six years of college, and several years of young artist residencies. I take my work seriously. That's why I have so much fun singing what I want in fursuit; I feel so free and love expressing myself! I joined the fandom two years ago, and have been on a true journey. I like to say that Chester has been pulling me along by the paw; I'm a different person than I used to be, and I feel proud. I love sharing videos online, to spread the joy I feel. I am an actor second to singing, so I also love recording skits with friends whenever the opportunity arises.
Here's a poster by my friend Pickles, of Vozzy and I for our performance at Nordic Fuzzcon!
YESHUA: Wow, it definitely sounds like you've given this your all and it really shows! You definitely should be proud of how well you can perform! No doubt you've caught the attention of many in the fandom; I can't say I've seen anyone do what you do! It's also great that you've found the community to be so enjoyable! I didn't know about your acting, however. I'd love to hear more about that, but before I do, I actually did mean to ask about Nordic Fuzzcon. I hear not only did you perform there quite a bit, but you also won a certain competition?
CHESTER: I really appreciate your compliments, it's a long road! Oh man, NFC. I had a magical experience there. It started with the dream to finally meet and make music with my pen pal Vozzy the Fox (more on him later). We put on a live operatic concert together, and were blown away by the response from the con (and hotel!) staff; they want us back next year to lead a to-be-announced concert! And to top it off, I won their Furovision song contest - I haven't felt that happy in a long time!
For those who don't know, Nordic Fuzzcon is Europe's second largest, in Malmö, Sweden. Not only was it unapologetically furry, but it was overflowing with activities and fun people. The raves were spectacular, there were so many animals. I was told ~50% of attendees are fursuiters. Malmö was chilly and breathtaking, and I've built lasting friendships there!
YESHUA: Aha, so that's who I saw performing with you on some of the videos! The staff like you both that much, huh? I don't blame them! You guys planning on doing that lead concert?
And heck yeah, many congrats on winning Furovision! Mind telling me a bit about what you had to go through to win it? How the competition went and such?
Also happy to hear you enjoyed the convention as well as the city! Cons are made to have fun and meet like-minded folks, and I'm glad you were able to do that!
CHESTER: Yes! Vozzy and I, if the stars align, will lead a concert in line with their 10th anniversary theme, "Ragnarök." Vozzy lives in Oslo, Norway, and is second violinist in the Oslo Opera Orchestra. He was just recently given a full profile nationally on the cover of Norway's "Magasinet"!!
Furovision was such a pleasant surprise, I didn't know what to expect, nor did I know there was a prize. Applications are judged and ten finalists are selected. A la Eurovision, each contestant presents their piece in front of judges and the live audience. After the last finalist performs, judges tally their scores while the audience votes for their favorite. The scores are split 50/50 between judges and audience, with the results presented live. The winner then performs the same song again!
YESHUA: Wow! Looks like Vozzy's quite the musician himself! And to be featured on a magazine in Norway? Very cool stuff. I might just have to see if I can arrange an interview with him as well!
As for Furovision, it certainly sounds like a pretty serious competition! Once again, congrats on winning! Was this your first time entering the competition or have you competed before?
CHESTER: It was my first time trying Furovision! It's all for fun, nobody takes it too seriously; I made friends with the other contestants and we were all rooting each other on!
Vozzy and I are united in wanting more furs to experience opera. It fits in perfectly with furries, who artistically express themselves through their own characters, often in costume. There will be a furry opera yet!
YESHUA: That's awesome to hear! At the end of the day it sounds like everyone participating did so to share their passion for music and singing, so it's great that all of you had a fun time and cheered for each other! Still, quite impressive you won in your first year participating! Thanks for sharing your experience at Furovision and Nordic Fuzzcon; it's always fantastic when folks go to these events and just let loose and have fun!
You also mentioned that you're an actor second to singing, and you enjoy doing skits with friends. Tell me a bit about that if you don't mind!
CHESTER: Well, I'm a trained actor, as opera is live theater. Extra care is done in the characterization or "color" of the voice to express emotion to the audience. Distance between the audience and performer can be a factor, especially in the larger U.S. opera houses (3,000 seats). Opera has no amplification, microphones or speakers; it's entirely acoustic, so clearly conveying the character with sound over a full orchestra is important, in addition to scaled gestures/stagecraft to tell the story. I've found this translates well into my performances in fursuit. I lose all facial expression, so I compensate by coloring my voice, and amplifying body movement and arm/paw gestures.
I've done a few short films and skits over the years - most recently, I filmed a Monty Python sketch with a group of friends, titled "The Royal (Furry) Society of Putting Things On Top of Other Things".
I've also done original nonsense with friends, including one silly sketch titled Living with a bird.
And finally, Lastly, I'll share a music video I organized and filmed for my very first convention, Stratosfur. It’s titled I’m Still Standing.
I've also got a couple projects I'm working on, wanting to incorporate some b-roll into songs I record. I've got several fursuit music video creators I look up to, including Duke That Dancing Dog.
Ahh sorry I'm having fun sharing with ya... I REALLY want to find a huge contraption and record my version of the "Retro Encabulator".
YESHUA: It's very interesting seeing you apply your opera experience to your performances in fursuit! Based on what I've seen, you definitely do great to make up for that lack of facial expression, not that many would mind I'd assume! I bet most folks enjoy watching a singing and acting geroo!
As for the skits and short films, they seem like a great way to not only have fun with your acting, but also bring friends together and have a good time making these projects! I definitely encourage you readers to check these out!
And music video projects it sounds like? Very, very interesting! Got any sneak peeks we could see at all? No worries if not or if you'd rather keep it under wraps, it's just very intriguing because it's not too often we see projects like these! And no worries about sharing! After watching that Retro Encabulator, now I wonder what your version would look like, haha!
CHESTER: Well, regarding the Retro Encabulator, as long as I can express the importance of using a drawn recriprocation dingle arm to reduce cinesoidal depleneration when florescence score motion is required, I'll be content.
I'm an open book, happy to share a sneak peek of what I've got coming next! I just recorded Music Of The Night from Phantom, and I really want to do Reflection from Mulan. I am gonna try filming myself in a couple other locations and string together to make it a proper music video. All in the name of fun!
YESHUA: Sounds like you know EXACTLY what ya want out of that Retro Encabulator skit, heheh.
Oh wow! Both of those sound very interesting projects; I've heard great things about the music from Mulan so I bet this will be something that's especially enjoyed around the fandom! Sounds like you're going all out for it too, but of course, just as you say, it's all in the name of fun and I'm glad to hear you have that attitude as you look to work on this!
Moving right along, I am interested in hearing a little about any other activities you do as a fursuiter, if any! Or do you typically suit up solely when you perform?
CHESTER: Other activities, eh? I'll usually say yes to an invitation to suit up with friends. I enjoy public suiting with a group when the weather's fair, and interacting with kids and their parents cheers me up as I become a goofball and make a fool of myself! Lastly, I love quality hugs and cuddles as much as the next fursuiter!
YESHUA: Aha, so you do find the time to just let loose and mess around while suiting up! That's great! I hear time and time again that simply suiting up with friends can be a lot of fun, and hugs and cuddles just sound very nice! What about the fandom in general? Are there any other things you get up to beyond fursuiting?
CHESTER: Absolutely! So, for me, the fandom has become a primary community for me. I spend (too much) time on Twitter and Telegram catching up with friends. I read furry comics, browse art, and watch videos. Pretty typical stuff. I love going to smaller meets like bowling, movies, and nature hikes. I've made the habit of organizing furmeets when I notice a vacuum in a city I visit.
When not working, the fandom has turned into my primary hobby! But when I'm not Chester, I like to keep my home well kept; it's a 1962 Airstream trailer I travel the country in wherever I go for work.
YESHUA: Sounds like you're definitely pretty well involved! Especially after just two years in the community! I'm very impressed by how you even organize furmeets in some cities. What's that been like? How hard has it been doing these meets in certain places?
And wow! That's one of the coolest things I've heard from someone in the fandom; just traveling the country for your work WHILE staying involved in the fandom! Love your traveling setup too!
CHESTER: Ahh thanks!! I gotta tell ya Yeshua... the last two years have been transformative for me. One reason why I enjoy organizing meets is to give opportunities to people to get comfortable with themselves and others. I had one person thank me for an invitation, as it was one of their first times meeting furries outside VR. I used to be a complete introvert, and thought it was my personality; it instead was crippling self-doubt, social anxiety and self-conscious behavior.
Some meets have been better than others, but I've found it good not to set expectations, just let things happen as they will, and enjoy the moment.
I'm really happy you like my traveling setup! I sometimes call it my Furstream. It's been everywhere, and this summer it's headed to Toronto, Iowa, then who knows! I've met another RV fur as well; we became friends at Wild Nights con in Oklahoma last year, then actually reconvened our trailers in the fall, when I was working near D.C.!
YESHUA: It's wonderful to hear that organizing meets has not only brought joy to others but you as well! Heh, Furstream huh? I like that! I hear Toronto is very good to visit. Haven't heard much about Iowa but I'm sure there are some hidden gems around! It's genuinely great to hear these positive experiences you've had even just traveling! It seriously sounds like you're living your best life.
CHESTER: To rephrase since I better understand your question: I typically make an effort to join existing group chats, make acquaintances on there and ask if there are any scheduled meets while I'm in town. If not and I'm feeling like it, I introduce myself and offer to schedule something!
Yep, it's certainly a Furstream when Chester's aboard; you can imagine a trailer has limited space, and he takes up one of my two available wardrobes!
I'm just a geroo pursuing happiness, one day at a time!
YESHUA: Ah, I see! Sounds like a pretty good way to meet some new folks, I won't lie!
Heh, I didn't even think about the space! Good point though, sounds like it'll definitely be a Furstream wherever you go!
I admire how you go about pursuing that happiness! Great to see it!
CHESTER: Thanks!
YESHUA: Of course! Well Chester, I honestly feel like I could chat with you for hours! It's just been such a fun time getting to know you! But the conversation must come to an end at some point, so before we go, is there anything else you'd like to share about you or your involvement in the fandom? Or any closing remarks?
CHESTER: This has been a lot of fun, something I've been looking forward to all week. I'm really glad I could share a lot with you and your readers, thank you for the opportunity! I suppose I could share my various socials, in case anyone would like to stay tuned, learn a bit more about me. My Twitter's @CGeroo, Tiktok & Insta @chestergeroo, and YouTube @chesterthegeroo.
YESHUA: Thank you once again for accepting my invitation, it was an absolute delight having you on! And you all heard him! If you want to keep up with the adventures of this geroo, just check him out on his socials!

CONVENTION CALENDAR
Disclaimer: This segment was originally published on Issue 259, but some of the conventions listed here are either underway or happening later in April. Just be aware that some may have already happened.
Hello again, readers! I’m Shetani, your Convention Calendar segment host for this issue, here to inform you about all the furry conventions and events happening online, around the world, and in your neck of the woods. Let’s jump right into it!
⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰
Keep Tahoe Furry is a brand-new outdoor furry event at the Granlibakken in Tahoe City, California, USA. Though the pandemic has thrown a few wrenches into the works, they’re finally ready to host their first event from Friday March 31 - Tuesday April 3 of this year. KTF bills itself as an alternative furcon without panels, dances, or scheduling, instead offering attendees an opportunity to create their own fun with friends and enjoy Lake Tahoe. Even so, there’s a fursuit sledding and group photo event planned for the last day of the con, and attendees are welcome to host their own small events. KTF is free to attend as long as you’re over 18 years of age, are vaccinated against COVID-19, and follow the venue’s mask guidelines.
⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰
Pawske Party will be held on Thursday April 6 at the Melahuset in Oslo, Norway. This furry dance club event branched off from a yearly furmeet that has grown beyond a private residence and is ready to rock all night long at its own venue! Before the DJs start spinning, enjoy events like the furwalk, group photo, quiz game, dealer’s den, and panels. For those who want to kick off the fun even earlier, a pre-party bowling meet has been arranged for the night before Pawske Party as well as a spa outing the morning after the furdance. Attendees must be 18 years old and show valid photo ID in order to register.
⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰
Stomp your way through prehistory at Fur Squared from Thursday April 6 - Sunday April 9! The con returns to the Sheraton Milwaukee Brookfield Hotel in Brookfield, Wisconsin, USA, and their theme for 2023 is Furassic Park. The schedule is chock full of excitement this year, with events ranging from dinosaur-themed Jeopardy to pin swaps to model railroading meetups and even - I’ll let this description speak for itself - “a cursed sketchbook swap dedicated to Garfield.” As you’re checking out the panels at Fur Squared, be sure not to miss those hosted by the Guests of Honor: vaccine researcher and developer Chise, and musical duo Keyotter and Rhubarb. In lieu of a fursuit parade this year, Fur Squared will have staff photographers available for photoshoots near the headless lounge and roaming around the con floor. Tabletop and video gaming, a dealer’s den, artist alley, and night market are planned as well. Fur Squared attendees must be vaccinated against COVID-19 and wear a mask at all times, including under fursuit heads. As their website states, if your badge is on, your mask is on!

The Hilton LAX in Los Angeles, California, USA welcomes the furries back for this year’s Golden State Fur Con between Friday April 7 - Sunday April 9. Bring your sunglasses and floral patterned button-up if you want to participate in the Island Getaway theme for 2023! A charity auction will be held and donations collected over the weekend for Forever Wild Exotic Animal Sanctuary, a non-profit dedicated to preserving the lives of abused, neglected and abandoned exotic animals through rescue, rehabilitation and education. The Guests of Honor are HuskyCo Fursuits and Fursnickety, the artist who designed GSFC’s mascots. Check out the GSFC website for all the schedule details, including a dating game show, tattoo panel, sketchbook swap, and more meet-and-greets than you can shake a coconut at. A dance competition, all ages and 18+ dealer’s dens, artist alley, art show, and photobooth await attendees as well. COVID-19 vaccination proof is required to attend GSFC.

Get ready to have a fantastic time at the aptly-named Fauntastic convention! This year’s theme is “Wild in the Street,” which I’m sure anyone passing by the DoubleTree by Hilton Lyon Eurexpo in Lyon, France between Friday April 7 - Tuesday April 11 would agree with. Planned events include a snack exchange, graffiti workshop, and fashion show, in addition to the standard furry con activities like a dealer’s den, group photos, gaming, karaoke, and dances. Programming is hosted in French and English, with Fauntastic providing translation services for attendees who need them. A unique aspect of Fauntastic is their specially-marked sticker areas on which furries can feel free to self-express by writing, drawing, and of course sticking surfaces to their hearts’ content! If you want to attend Fauntastic, keep in mind that you must be over 18 years old.

Another new convention, Furcationland, is scheduled for Friday April 14 - Sunday April 16. The Holiday Inn Portland-By The Bay in Portland, Maine, USA plays host to this first-time furcon. The inaugural Guests of Honor are Barton Fox, photographer and videographer, and Lagoona, known for her fursuit dancing and charity work with Short Folks for Hope Foundation. In fact, Furcationland will be raising donations for that very charity through a bucket brigade, charity auction, and A/V power hour during the convention. Other scheduled events include gaming demos, a writing slam, game shows, and comedy improv. Let’s not forget the dealer’s den, dance competition, masquerade, and nightly dances! Furcationland attendees should be prepared to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination and wear a face mask in convention spaces.

Las Vegas Fur Con kicks off their first event at the Alexis Park All-Suite Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. After being delayed by the pandemic, the first con will take place Friday April 14 - Sunday April 16. Putting a slight spin on a familiar phrase, “The Enfurtainment Capital of the World'' will be the convention’s theme. LVFC boasts a grand total of four Guests of Honor - fashion company owner and artist Wolf (ISANANIKA), Twitch streaming duo Whiskey Dingo and Chester Otter, commission artist Orlando Fox, and musical group Run, Definitely Run! For 2023, LVFC’s chosen charity is Las Vegas Trans Pride, an organization which aids the trans* community of Las Vegas. Programming includes live performances by multiple furry music artists, an adults-only night market and rooftop party, dealer’s den and artist alley, panels, and meetups. Start planning your weekend of fun by browsing the schedule on LVFC’s website! Attendees must be at least 18 years of age, vaccinated against COVID-19 with at least one booster shot, and wear a face mask while in convention space.

Wild Nights is a furry camping convention taking place Thursday April 27 - Tuesday May 2 - in Robbers Cave State Park near Wilburton, Oklahoma, USA. This long-running community staple held their first event in 2009, if you can believe it! 2023’s con, themed Very Superstitious, promises to be a spooktacularly good time. Programming and events have historically included outdoor games such as swimming and basketball, a variety show, fursuit events, and artist sketchbook swaps. The Guests of Honor are musician Matthew Ebel and artist Zola. Take a peek at the “Who’s Coming” list on WN’s website to start networking with the other furries you’ll meet at con! Lodging and meals are included in the registration cost. At press time, 2023’s COVID policies were not announced, so make sure to check the official channels for announcements as they come.

On the calendar this month is our cover artist Sunni/TheRealWolfArtist having a ball-oon at Texas Furry Fiesta in March!
Wow, I’m amazed at just how many brand new furry conventions are holding their first ever event this April! I think it’s a great sign of our furry community’s continued growth, and how we can gather together to build a local scene while helping out those in our neighborhoods. If you can, why not show your support by attending, volunteering, or donating a registration to one of these furcons to help them get a strong start? Speaking of which, our Art 101 host Fika Monster will be attending Pawske Party, so if you’re going also, be sure to say hi! Remember to get vaxxed and wear your face mask when meeting up with any furs in person.
Got questions or suggestions for Convention Calendar? Feel free to drop me a line on Twitter and the Fediverse, or hit me up at any of the other platforms linked on my website. If there’s an upcoming event you want to ensure we cover here on Furry Weekly, don’t hesitate to let me know. Have fun and stay safe out there!

FURRY QUOTE
Welcome back friends, happy weekend! Lilli here with this week’s Furry Quote! I hope everyone’s had a great week! I hope you’re ready for this week’s quote, I think it’s a good one.
This week, we’re talking about:
Rainbows vs. Silver Linings
Storms come. It's a fact of life that it's not always going to be just sunshine and butterflies. Everyone suffers, we all end up in dark and heavy situations sometimes where it feels like the storm will never end. Those who aren't going through the storm with us encourage us that every cloud has a silver lining and we just need to look through the storm to find it. Silver linings can be difficult to find, oftentimes they can be very small and hide in the gray of the storm clouds. But a rainbow always stands out.
If you see someone having a bad day, be kind to them. Heck, be kind in general. As the phrase goes, "the happiest people are often the saddest." You never know when someone could be going through a storm and they're just not showing it.
Be kind to everyone you meet. If you've got joy inside you, spread it. Compliment someone, give them a genuine smile. Be the rainbow everyone needs inside their storm. You'll never know exactly who needed your kind words and smile the most, and know knows, maybe that person will come through and be a rainbow for you.
⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰
That’s all for this week! Thank you for joining me to talk about rainbows vs. silver linings! If you have a topic you’d like me to cover or a quote you’d like them to share, feel free to reach out to me on Instagram or DeviantArt.
See you next time!
