ART CORNER

Hello, everyone! I’m Multifurse and welcome to Art Corner! I’ve got some great art to share with y’all this week, so let’s get started!

First up this week is a beautiful scene by momojenart!

Anthro bunny holding a glass while at a dinner table.

Oh, wow, this piece is gorgeous! The first thought that comes to mind here is “sparkly!” This looks like such a lovely outdoor lunch or dinner date, and I love the thought put into this piece! First and foremost, the character is beautifully rendered; the details in the hair are fantastic, and I love the dappled shadows from the surrounding trees! They really help to make the piece cohesive, and the character looks like she’s integrated into the background. I also really appreciate the table setting, including the salt and pepper mills, the silverware, and the bottle of rose on the table. The detail with painting glass is also excellently handled; glass can be a difficult substance to accurately render, and the artist did a great job in that! All in all, this is a beautiful piece, Momo, well done!

⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰

Next up this week is a delightfully aquatic icon by malaikatqueens!

Close up headshot of dragon-looking lady.

I love the style of this piece so much, oh my goodness! The eyes especially are really captivating, that’s what I keep being drawn to! They’re so bright and colorful, and the viewers can seem to make eye contact with the character, giving this piece a nice, personal touch. The shading is really smooth and well-articulated, and I love the shimmer that the earring has! The layout of this piece is also really nice to look at! It’s delightfully balanced, and there’s just enough negative space for the piece to breathe and not be overwhelming. Excellent work, Malaikat, keep it up!

⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰

The last piece from me this week is this impressive 3D work by mooniedreamerthefox!

Bust of fiery-looking fox.

I can’t say that I’ve had the honor to discuss a 3D work before, this is impressive! I really like the details in this, and the shaping of the character’s face is very well done! The shadows are visually appealing, and the fur texture is well-handled as well! I really like how vibrant the colors are, and the character’s expression is amazing! I think the gradient from lighter oranges to deeper reds is a very nice touch, and it really helps add some depth to the character’s markings. Excellent work, Moonie!

⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰

That’s all for this week! Many thanks to our artists for allowing us to feature their works this week! If you liked what you saw, check out their pages and drop a follow if you feel so inclined!

WRITING SHOWCASE

Hello, everybody! My name is Dozu, and I bring you today a new story to feast your eyes upon!

⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰

Warriors - Shadow Hearts by JB-Pawstep on Toyhouse.

Warriors - Shadow Hearts
By JB-Pawstep

Summary: Waspneedle, a medicine cat, is expecting kits. This not only is against the warrior code but it means that our protagonist, Rowanpaw, will soon take her place as PineClan’s medicine cat. Will she be up for the task?

Highlights: The fact that this is a comic and therefore comes with artwork is a huge highlight! The art is amazing and really helps drive home the characters’ expressions and body language and the environments.

For improvement: Not a lot to say in this section! For a comic it is well balanced visually, the pages aren't too long or too short per chapter and the dialogue is well separated in bubbles and squares, distinguishing dialogue from narration. Good job!

Question time! Answer in a post and tag @FurryWeekly and @DoggyDozu if it’s on Twitter!

  • Have you ever read Warrior Cats?

  • If so, what do you think of the franchise?

⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰

That will be all for today folks. I hope you have enjoyed my pick!

Let’s give our authors a round of applause for their hard work! Remember to include the tags #FurryWeekly and #WritingShowcase in your posts if you want us to see your own writing on any platform! See you all next time, and now I'll sashay away.

WRITING 101

Cardboard boxes are scattered amongst various furniture items in this freshly-modeled basement apartment. The space is aglow with bright light, washing the white walls and gray wood floors in warm yellows. The cardboard’s smell intermingles with the faint scent of new paint and the wooden planks underfoot. All is relatively quiet, save a hawk in the bedroom wrestling with several sizable parts to a bed frame, complete with headboard and footboard.

The Camera, after touring the rest of the apartment, peeks into the bedroom. Tad is sitting on the floor, holding a long plank of wood under one arm and trying to line up its screw holes with one of the bed’s legs. He looks up at the machine’s entrance.

“Oh, hey there,” he says as he smiles. “What do you think of the place?”

The camera looks around once more, then gives an approving nod of its body.

“I think I scored a pretty okay deal here, considering how ridiculous housing has gotten around these parts....”

He reaches for a wrench, but the Camera interrupts with a chirrup.

“Eh? Oh, this week’s Writing 101? Of course I finished it!”

⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰

Hello friends, and welcome to Furry Weekly’s Writing 101! I’m Bryce Griffin, here to get all you writers out there the inside scoop on literature tips and tricks. Let’s get started!

⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰

Graphic that says Let’s talk about at the speed of plot.

We return with another common yet often overlooked aspect of many plot-driven stories. Tropes in film and literature crop up time and time again because they are popular ways to depict characters, situations, or ideals. They may be beneficial or detrimental tropes, but they nevertheless allow us to pin creative expressions to concrete definitions.

Something that happens “at the speed of plot” means an event occurs so that it is convenient for storytelling rather than in regards to real-life timing or logistics.

Several things can happen at the speed of plot: arriving at a crime scene just in time to glimpse the killer’s mane of bright red hair; catching up to a wanted warlord just as he and his helicopter takes off; a deadly pathogen leaving the protagonist a week to find a cure while others succumb within hours. Sometimes, events like this have a real explanation covered in the story—in this case, the trope does not apply. If they are not acknowledged or adequately explained, which is typical in fiction, then these narrative elements occur at the speed of plot.

It wouldn’t make much story sense to stumble upon the poor chap’s corpse a minute after the killer already left. Some sort of key detail in an otherwise spotless crime scene needs to give the protagonist something to go off of. A tense pursuit, perhaps one that provides another clue to the killer’s identity, is far more conducive to an action-thriller story. It progresses the story, all because the protagonist was able to glimpse and subsequently keep up with the killer at the speed of plot.

Travel is most typical for this trope. The speed (or distance) at which the travel occurs may be intentionally fuzzy so that the trope is better disguised. This tends to function well for stories set in fictional worlds rather than the real one. It would be difficult to convince many people that a hero is able to dash from the Chelsea Piers to Bethesda Terrace in ten minutes or fewer. New York City is dense, but there’s no way someone can run pell-mell through thousands of people and dozens of intersections.

“See, I don’t even need my phone to read my own script,” says Tad. “All up here and ready to go.”

He taps his feathery head with the wrench.

“Now… if only putting this bed frame together was as easy.... I guess I can check the instructions to make sure I’m doing this right.”

He stretches for the instruction manual on the ground, scoops it up, and starts reading. However, he quickly tilts his head in clear confusion.

“Wait… why is all of this written in Swedish?”

FURSUIT FANATICS

Hihi..! Welcome to this week’s edition of Furry Weekly. My name is Talmorra and I’ll be your host as we continue our travels to meet with exciting new furs and their wonderfully unique fursuits. Today we will revisit the tradition we started the month with: “March comes in like a Lion.” Well, we’ve reached the end of the month, beginning of April, so, for this issue, we shall watch as March “goes out like a.. goat..?” Let's just get things rolling and allow me to introduce our very own Olivier, the space goat! And will someone please get me Central Casting on the phone?

Close up of Olivier, a furry alien character resembling a goat.

Today’s guest comes to us all the way from the Hague, a city on the North Sea coast of the western Netherlands. Olivier and his suiter, Nick, have been together in the furry fandom for several years now and both use he/him pronouns.

Olivier is an alien, regardless of his common moniker. People regularly say he looks like a goat – which Nick says he personally doesn’t see. Olivier’s fur is mostly white with gray manes and black claws and his eyes are brown with white pupils. While Nick says he could go on for hours about Olivier’s race and the planet he hails from, we’ll just keep it simple here and say he’s an ‘alien.’

Nick says he made Olivier himself and he is the second fursuit of this particular character – who was his first personal fursuit which he described as “a weird hybrid creature.” Olivier’s first fursuit has been retired and its place has been taken by two distinctly different suits: one realistic and one that’s more toony.

“I really like making him as true to his design as I possibly can,'' Nick said when I asked about any special features and/or accessories for Olivier. “He has an orange spacesuit/overalls I made for him, a very distressed backpack covered in patches, a ton of goggles and glasses [as well as] a watch-type computer thing; in his background story, he uses this device as a teleport type machine.”

Photo of Olivier wearing a white doctor-looking coat with sunglasses on his forehead.

A large photoshoot with Olivier is planned in a large old factory that they are really looking forward to, and are eager to share photos with the community. They also hope to travel to more future events: “I made him at the start of the first COVID pandemic here in the Netherlands. He has not been to many cons or events and they would really like that to change, [sometime] soon.” Nick says he has another suit he uses to entertain local kids on Halloween but with Olivier, strolling around events and talking to people and meeting friends has been the extent of his activities to date. Taking photos and seeing what he’s made come to life is among his favorite fursuiting activities as well as hanging out with friends in-suit.

Of the events that Olivier has been to, Pony Con Holland stands out in particular. “I did the makeup for the actors there,” Nick says, “And was allowed on the con floor so [I] brought him along as there were more fursuiters at the event. Had the time of my life there, not gonna lie. Met a lot of cool folks there and despite it not being a specialized fur con, the folks were very welcoming to fursuiters and the atmosphere was friendly. I’m definitely keeping that con on my agenda.”

Nick says Olivier came about around 13 years ago and was created as a suit over the span of two to three years. He says he finds it difficult to answer the question of when he was made because “I made his suit over a very long time, so I guess three years if you count the starting date and two years if you count the date he was finished.”

Nick says he kept drawing Olivier and other anthropomorphic animals and werewolves until it got to the point that people were telling him he was a furry: “At the time, I had no idea what a furry was so I Googled it and, lo and behold, others with interests like me!” He says it was a long time before he began considering himself as a furry as he didn’t really think he was that ‘into’ the community, “But eventually, that changed over time and here we are now, and I can not imagine a life without the furry community, honestly.”

When asked about joining the fandom, Nick told me that it was probably around 2016 that it “really started to roll. Before that, it was a casual enjoyment and after, I was talking more with people too and my username changed to what it is now after someone gave me the nickname ‘space goat.’”

I asked Nick what it was that made him decide to become a fursuiter: “Oh, good question! I liked cosplay and made a character from a game that was basically a fursuit, and then it clicked I could do that [for] Olivier too. So then the first version of him came into existence – which I like to nickname ‘The Ancient One.’ This led to me completely leaving cosplay behind as fursuiting was more comfortable for me.”

Olivier posing with a skulldog looking character.

“For me fursuiting, and having Olivier as my online persona was a safe way [of] interacting with the outside world,” Nick told me when asked about how he thought being in-suit impacted his social interactions and personal sense of identity. “Olivier really helped me figure out who I am and that it’s okay to be a little odd, as there are always others like you. You are never truly alone [no matter] how weird you might see yourself and how much of a stranger you might be to others or yourself. [Olivier] is an alien as I felt like one in the real world, and that luckily shifted into finding my place in the universe alongside him. I always tell people that he is my mirror and that has a sense of truth in it in this way. My fursuit for me is a way of ‘choosing’' to be more out there at a con and wanting attention and interaction or choosing to be more in the background, as very few recognise me out of suit. So I can comfortably adjust my level of interaction and recognition in social situations.”

Approaching the end of the interview, I asked about any experiences – particularly any that might have been humorous or memorable: “I always find it funny hearing people in the distance debate what exactly Olivier is before coming my way to ask, and then them always going '’ooooooh right of course yea..... yea....'’ after I say he’s an alien, while I could hear them thinking Olivier is a goat or dragon or an ‘omen of sorts’ or a yeti. I’ve even had someone say he thought I was a husky, which was confusing for everyone involved.”

He also shared another memorable moment: “...I once had to be the handler for another suiter, who was in turn my handler which was chaotic as we were part of an event where I had to put a stamp on a card for people... fur and claws and a tiny stamp... utter chaos... I ended up letting the ‘humans’ do it themselves.”

Finally, I asked about any specific future goals: “I’d like to go to a fur con one day I think? Go and meet online friends in person [and] all that … aside from that I feel really blessed already having a suit so close to what I had in mind for him and having it of a character I so strongly connect to…”

Before wrapping up, they had one last thing to say: “What I'd like to add is that people are capable of more than they think. I made Olivier with chronic pain in my hands, so take your time and research what you can before starting, and then I'm positive that everyone can do what they have always dreamed of!”

If you think you might be interested in following or learning more about Olivier, you can find him @olivierthespacegoat on Instagram.

And, with that, another installment of Fursuit Fanatics comes to an all too soon close. I hope you’ve had fun and enjoyed meeting our guest just as much as I have. Remember, if you think you should be featured in Fursuit Fanatics..or know someone who does..get ahold of us at #FurryWeekly and #Fursuit Fanatics.

PHOTOGRAPHY 101

Hello, friends and photografurs! Welcome to this week's Photography 101! I'm your host, Jaden (Discord @ Jaden711#0663). With so many different types of cameras out there, it can be hard to pick which one is right for you. You don't want to buy the wrong one and not have it meet your needs, and you don't want to overspend on a camera and have it do too much. Today we’ll be going over the best types of cameras for conventions!

Graphic that says Let’s talk about the best cameras for conventions.

While smartphones have the poorest quality on this list, that doesn't mean they are a bad option. Almost everyone has access to a smartphone, they are super light and compact, and depending on how new your phone is, it may come with a plethora of pro features like manual shooting! It's perfect for capturing quick moments of a convention that will last forever. However, because cell phones are so expensive compared to other cameras with much higher quality, I definitely wouldn't recommend buying a phone just for the camera, especially when our next option does the same things as a phone camera, but better and cheaper. But for those interested, I would recommend the Galaxy S23 or the iPhone 14.

Compact cameras are a bit of a hidden gem but are the perfect option for people who want good photos but aren't serious about photography. They’re commonly called point-and-shoot cameras because their philosophy is you just point the camera at your subject, hit the shoot button and the computer inside will do all the work to give you the best possible result. Another amazing plus about compact cameras is, as their name suggests, they are incredibly small and easy to carry around in pockets, bags, or backpacks. Because of their small size and great image quality, these types of cameras are the absolute best option for conventions. If you plan on buying a compact camera for a convention, look for one with a long battery life, and a big aperture. This will be marked by a small decimal like 5.6 or written as f/5.6. The smaller this number equals a larger and more desirable aperture. Image stabilization is also a feature that's not necessary but may be worth spending a little bit extra on if you can afford it to decrease camera shake. Don't worry about things like optical zoom for conventions since most of your photos will be relatively close to your subjects, this will be an unnecessary extra cost. If a compact camera sounds right up your alley, I’d recommend cameras from the Canon ELPH line and the Sony DSC-W830.

Finally, the adventure camera, but most people will use the brand GoPro as a general name for these cameras. Most people only consider videos when thinking about these types of cameras, but most adventure cameras can take photos too! Being the smallest and most compact type of camera on this list, it can be the most appealing one on this list for conventions, and brands like GoPro have apps to control the camera from your phone, which can make it a lot more user-friendly for the average person. However, because these cameras are more meant for videos, a lot of the features will be exclusive to video mode so when it comes to shooting pictures, you're sacrificing a lot of features for its extreme compactness. Another major downside of cameras like this is they usually have fish eye effects, which may lead to some undesirable results when you're taking photos or selfies with your favourite fursuiter. But that doesn't mean that with a little practice, you can't make that fish eye effect work for you! If this sounds like the type of camera for you, I would recommend any camera from the GoPro brand!

That concludes this week's segment! If you have any questions or would like constructive criticism on your photos, don't be afraid to shoot me (Discord @ Jaden711#0663) a message!

FURSUIT DESIGNING TIPS

Hi all, Olivier here, and I'm back again with our newest article. In the previous one we talked about storing fursuits. This time I'll be talking about the different types of fursuits there are.

Toony suits are mostly seen in the community and are the fursuits that have a special cartoonesque style to them. Every fursuit maker has their own style which they are often very famous for. The shapes are often exaggerated and colours very vibrant.

Image of toony-looking feline fursuit.

Suit by Rat Race Fursuits

Kemono fursuits are a type of toony fursuits that resemble an anime-like style with large plastic domed eyes and smaller mouths. But every maker puts their own twist on these often adorable suits as well.

Realistic suits are the suits which often have cabochon eyes, and tear duct vision. These days there are makers who make fursuits that use the wearer's eyes and are very snug to the face with a stiff foam head base, making them perfect for larp.

An avian-based fursuit by DragonArtist15 on the left and a cheetah fursuit by Magpiebones on the right.

Avian-based fursuit by DragonArtist15 (left); cheetah fursuit by Magpiebones (right).

A quad suit is a type of full suit where the wearer walks with special crutches and thus on all fours, these are oftentimes a form of realistic suit too.

Realistic suits often look way more like the animal they represent in shape and colours, of course it's up to the designer to see what they want their character to look like and like most art, there are no real ‘’rules’’

In my last article I mentioned ‘’and how these types of suits can affect your ‘’acting’’ and ‘reacting’ to the people around you.’’ I wanted to tell you guys about how different types of fursuits can get different reactions from people you interact with and how that can affect your performance in your suit.

In my experience, I've found that people find toony suits easier to goof around with, while realistic suits are often seen as more ‘’serious.’’

This is definitely something to take into account when you make or buy your first fursuit, as it can create some confusing and slightly uncomfortable situations.

In toony suits I've noticed people want to ‘’play’’ more, they want to snuggle and pet and overall react way more playful with you, and you can react a lot more goofy yourself – you are a toony creature after all!

In realistic suits people react more to you with a slight serious undertone, people find it harder to play and more often come for a chat rather than a pet.

I have a toony suit and a realistic one of my fursona, and I get more reactions I prefer in the realistic suit then the toony.

So if your character or personal personality is more goofy and playful, go for toony and if you are a little more serious and not as playful a realistic suit can suit you oftentimes better.

You can always talk with your maker or think to yourself about what expression you put on the fursuit of your character. On the other hand, if you have a nasty snarly angry face, partying and excitingly jumping around can get people a little confused as your face looks angry, while a sleepy, tired expression can be hard to show you are happy.

People often opt for a neutral or happy face, as with hiding your smile in your paws you can be surprised or hiding your eyes you can be sad.

The acting then mostly comes from hiding what is looking ‘’off’’ in your expression.

⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰

I hope this article made you guys think what type of fursuit would fit you the most, and has gotten you all excited for the next subject which will be about the tools used for fursuit making!

I try to have the order of my articles as logical as I can, so you guys have time to think and see what works and won’t work, and what you will be getting yourself into, before we move to the actual making of fursuit parts.

I hope this article was fun to read, and would love to hear feedback or questions on the topic from you all in one way or another. And if I forgot your favourite style fursuit please let me know!

You can always contact me through Instagram @olivierthespacegoat for questions or feedback.

CHARACTER INTERVIEW

Hi you all! Welcome back to another edition of Character Interview, where we sit down with some cool folks in the fandom and just chat with them for a bit. I’m Yeshua, and I’m very happy you’re joining us today!

I’m very excited to talk with today’s guest, so let’s get it started!

YESHUA: This week I'm joined by Fons and I'm just eager to get to know more about what he does in the fandom. Thanks so much for taking some time to chat with me! Tell me a little about you and what you do in the fandom if you don't mind!

FONS: Hewoooooo! I’m Fons, I’m an Italian bnuyy living in Germany.

Fons wearing his fursuit while standing outside.

I am 21 years old and I’m an audio engineering student, passionate musician, and sometimes a visual artist.

I'm full of carrots and joy, and I love to spread happiness to everyone I can, helping in every way I can and just being there for my friends whenever they need me.

Well, a little bit of what I do in the fandom is just being me and trying to share my passion, my emotions and love to music to every big and small ear that wants to listen!

YESHUA: It's very nice to meet you! There's lots I want to chat about so let's see what we can get through!

You say you're a passionate musician and like to bring music to folks who want to listen; what kind of music do you make? Any specific genre or genres you focus on?

FONS: That’s completely right! When it comes to what type of music I make, I love to fill my music with intricate emotions and tell stories, not just limited to a song, but also making sense of the whole context inside of an album. These albums are known as “conceptual albums” and they explore a certain topic or history within itself. I just love doing that!

Right now I’m actually experimenting mixing my influences to continue to develop my style, but the genres I am focusing on are normally sub-genres of rock like for example, alternative rock, pop rock, post-rock, art-rock and even adding sometimes sparkles of more progressive styles of music such as prog-metal.

YESHUA: I see that you certainly think very in depth about the music you create! I'm very intrigued by the concept albums you mention; what kind of concept albums have you made if you don't mind me asking?

As for the genres you're working on, I think it's really cool you're exploring different types of rock! Pop rock in particular sounds interesting, but that's just for me personally, aha.

FONS: Well thank you! I think planning is very important when releasing something as an artist, that applies for almost every type of art you could name.

For the time being, I have just released one album, it’s called “Ad Meliora” and I worked on it since the start of 2022 until one month before the release date on December 24th.

I do work on a lot of music every week, and I’m planning to release more stuff this year.

And yeah hehe, most of the genres I enjoy working a lot on are not really what you can call “mainstream,” they were never really so in the course of music history, but I think for me it’s the right path to express myself emotionally and artistically, since those styles of music allow me to go deeper into what I want to express.

Also, I just released an EP called “Digital Carrots” that is part of a bigger project, you can call that one also a conceptual album.

Collage of two of Fons’ album covers.

YESHUA: I agree that planning is important, and it looks like you certainly take the time to plan!

Regarding your album Ad Meliora, can you tell me a little bit about what topic it explores or what sort of context it has? Same for Digital Carrots if you don't mind, I'm very interested to hear more about these as the conceptual albums you've released!

And hey, you say that the genres you work with allow you to best express yourself, so that's great! Even if it's not necessarily mainstream.

FONS: Thanks for asking! Well, Ad Meliora is a very emotion-heavy album that explores the changes that have happened in my life during the last two years since I decided to move to Germany and I got completely immersed in the fandom. The middle of the album explores a self realization I made, that I can be better in a lot of things regarding myself, and how the world surrounding me is affecting that.

The final part of the album ends with a positive note in which things will get better as long as I remain authentic and keep pursuing my dreams and a love for myself, since I struggle a lot with self confidence.

I chose the word “Ad Meliora” because it means in Latin “toward better things,” and the album is themed around inviting the audience to travel to me around a country called, “Ad Meliora.” The album is in nature, mostly acoustic and somewhat experimental and atmospheric.

After releasing it, I tried to explore more around harder, intenser sounds and audio environments. And so, I found myself composing “Digital Carrots,” an EP that took me around 24 hours to do and it is a critic towards the current state of the internet, how we are subjected to undesired and intense advertising, how the internet can lead to mental illnesses and how social networks have now such a big stake on the current state of the world.

YESHUA: Very interesting concepts you've explored in both albums! Certainly sounds like Ad Meliora was more personal for you since it deals with your feelings and experiences; the progression of the album is very intriguing, and it's great that it ends with a positive note! I feel like many could potentially identify with those experiences you've described.

Then there's Digital Carrots, which first, it's impressive that you made an EP in just 24 hours! Second, it's cool hearing that after the acoustic and atmospheric feel of Ad Meliora, you decided to focus on a "harder" topic, and to illustrate that, you went with more intense sounds for the music you made. Hearing about your work directly from you and explaining your thinking behind it all is just so incredibly interesting!

You said you're planning to release more stuff this year; do you have anything you could share about any upcoming project at all? Maybe a sneak peek? No pressure of course, just curious!

FONS: Yes! I’m preparing very cool stuff and also collabs with different musicians on the fandom. Doing collabs is a thing I really love to do, giving others the opportunity to provide creative input is so fulfilling for me.

Of course I can provide a sneak peek. I’m preparing a very nice album that for the time being remains untitled, but I am kinda sure on what direction it is taking. It will also mix a lot of the genres I’m influenced by, but I’m also trying to create some familiarity for the mainstream culture of nowadays.

YESHUA: Collabs, huh? I know there are plenty of other musicians in the fandom, so it'll be interesting seeing who you work with and what you all come up with. And you're putting together an album that mixes the genres you usually work with while trying to make it more mainstream? This is all definitely stuff to look forward to!

Thanks for sharing a bit about what you're planning for the rest of 2023! Something else I was interested in was, I believe you've performed at conventions before. If so, can you tell me a bit about that?

FONS: Yes! Thanks for asking.

Well my experience regarding performing at conventions is rather short, but it’s just the start!

Collage of Fons performing guitar while wearing his fursuit.

My first time ever performing at a convention was in the Eurofurence 26 in Berlin, Germany. I think that was actually where my passion for making music and performing live reignited again. It wasn’t at all planned, I just joined other musicians in the free stage, and I had a total blast. Some friends that are also musicians were there and we played some of our favorite songs together. I created some memories that I will never forget in that con.

Fons Performing in fursuit with another fursuiter.

The second time I performed – and I actually planned an event with the con organizers – was during Nordic Fuzz Con this year in Malmö, Sweden. I’m not gonna lie, I was extremely nervous cause I knew in the audience there were going to be people I really care for and I just wanted to give them a performance they would never forget – in the good sense. I practiced for months and I think I had one of the best times of my life during that performance. Also, I played the acoustic guitar around the convention a lot of times, and I was super happy to see people joining me to sing and even dance. It’s super cool to share those vibes with other people and be able to transfer emotions. I really think that a successful musician is the one that is able to transport emotions within music, it’s not about money or fame, it's just about sharing that energy with other ones, and in that sense, I felt like I had success. I saw people unifying to sing and clap, even some crying to my music, that just feels extremely fulfilling and it’s super wholesome in my opinion.

YESHUA: Your experience performing may be short but wow, it sounds like those have been some pretty memorable moments! I definitely think that if you enjoyed something so improvised like what you did at Eurofurence 26, it's a pretty good sign of something you're passionate about! Very happy to hear you made some lifelong memories there.

Then leading to NordicFuzzCon, I'm glad all your practice and dedication was worth it! I can tell how meaningful that particular performance must have been; you were able to do your planned performance as well as the jam sessions around the con grounds, and it sounds like it all went swell! It's truly wonderful hearing that you've been able to do something you're passionate about and share it with others who have enjoyed it.

Do you have any plans to perform at other conventions or meets in the near, or distant future?

FONS: Yes! I plan to perform in all the conventions that open me the door to do so in the near future Hopefully this year that happens more.

YESHUA: That sounds great! Do you have any events you know for sure you're performing at or not yet?

FONS: Not completely sure yet, but most probably the Alfurnative in the Netherlands.

YESHUA: I see! Sounds like you'd likely perform more often at European events, so that's where folks can catch you!

I was also interested in asking, when you've performed, whether it's planned like at NFC, or impromptu like the jam sessions around the con ground at NFC, you've performed in fursuit, I believe?

FONS: Yes! Exactly, but I really wanna go to an American convention soon, maybe even perform in one someday. That’s surely a dream of mine.

You are right, I perform in suit 90% of the time. See, my fursona is based around my passion for music, and I give music to him in such of a power, and so performing in suit for me is one of the most special things to do, cause again I can be myself and at the same time portray that facet of my sona through it, if that makes sense.

I gotta say, performing in suit is very difficult and it requires lots of practice and endurance, but honestly it pays off at the end. Every time I perform in suit, it becomes an experience I will never forget

Collage of Fons fursuiting while posing with a guitar.

YESHUA: If you ever come to a con in the U.S., I'd love to catch you! I can definitely think of a good bunch of cons that you might like! I hope you're able to do that.

I didn't realize performing in suit was so meaningful to you! I was immediately drawn to you when I thought I saw that you did this, but that makes a lot of sense! Our fursonas really can be part of ourselves, so embracing that character while doing something you love sounds incredibly fulfilling. And I was wondering how hard it would be to perform in suit, yes! But again, your success in doing so just once again shows how passionate you are about music and the fandom, and I think it's awesome this is indeed something you're able to show off in the community. I don't know tons of people who do this!

FONS: I totally agree with you. At the end my fursona is me, and so it’s just extremely special when I can bring that out to the world.

YESHUA: This is all just such a joy to hear! Thanks for sharing! Shifting topics just a bit, I did want to ask about fursuiting in general. Do you go out and fursuit beyond performing, or do you typically only fursuit when you perform?

FONS: Of course! I do fursuit on all the opportunities I have, it’s not just a performing thing for me. Fursuiting nowadays is one of my favorite things to do. It is just so much fun, it’s so fulfilling for me and it’s just incredibly wholesome. I love just being myself, bringing to life my sona and being the crazy bunny I am all the time I can.

YESHUA: Heck yeah! Love to hear that! That's certainly how it is for most, and I'm happy you're able to just let loose and have fun as a big fluffy bnuyy! Heheh. Any particular activities you like while suiting?

FONS: Of course! It's totally amazing.

Everything is so much fun in suit to be honest, but maybe my favorite is cuddling and just being crazy, jumping around and making people laugh. It's amazing. Also something super sweet for me, is whenever I go on suitwalks. We normally encounter a lot of families, and children get super excited most of the time. It's so wholesome to turn maybe just a normal day for people, into some memories. I like to think that one day when the kids are older, they will see the pictures they took and remember that day as a very special one. Not everyday you get to see fluffies in the streets…

Collage of Fons fursuiting alone and with other fursuiters.

YESHUA: Heh, interesting that you enjoy cuddling and being energetic, two pretty different sides of fursuiting! Not saying it's bad, just thought it was a funny contrast! As for going on walks and encountering families and children, it really does sound very wholesome being able to make their days! Indeed, you don't see giant animals just roaming in public every day!

I wanted to ask, on those suitwalks, you probably go with other fursuiters, right? Or do you go alone or with just one or two other folks sometimes?

FONS: Yes! Most of the time is with larger groups of fursuiters, around 20-30 sometimes, we also have other folks in the groups like handlers and photographers. But there have also been times in which I have gone with 3-4 other fursuiters to do a walk.

One of the most special experiences I had, was when a friend from Spain was coming to stay with me for a week and for a local furry dance, and me and another friend, we went to pick him up from the airport by train. It was awesome. We were in full suit since we left my place at night, it was a really nice experience. We even did a small video about it.

YESHUA: Woah, that's pretty much like a fur meet! I can only imagine how cool it must be to have all these fursuiters out on a walk; and what a sight it must be for the public, hahah. Overall it just sounds like a grand time!

Ah! That experience with your friend from Spain sounds so fun too! It really looks like you've fully embraced fursuiting and just make the most of it!

FONS: That’s completely true hehe. I’m very lucky to live in an area of Germany that has presumably the largest density of furries. I think the largest suitwalk I organized with another friend was about 60 people.

And yes, I embraced that completely like you say it. It just makes me super happy!

YESHUA: I've seen tons of folks from the German furry community, I've even been able to feature some in the magazine! Definitely seems like you all have tons of fun!

And hearing you say it makes you happy to embrace this is fantastic! After all, it's all just another way to participate in the fandom and have a good time.

Are there other things you're involved in within the fandom that perhaps we haven't touched on? Maybe just having friends, interacting with others online, or other things?

FONS: Mhhh. Well regarding what I do in the fandom, we organize fursuit walks and events with one of my best friends around here, his name is Fuya and we have hosted a lot of very nice stuff.

I like a lot when we get people together and in some way we are helping build friendships, and again that’s super fulfilling and wonderful if you ask me.

Group photo of several fursuiters including Fons.

YESHUA: That's awesome! I'd say meets like that are such an important part of the fandom because after all, we're more than just these characters on the internet, so giving people the chance to meet each other is just so good. And indeed, it's also a chance for new friendships to emerge.

This has been an incredibly fun time, Fons! I could honestly chat with you for so much longer, but the interview does have to end at some point. Before we wrap up, is there anything else you'd like to share about yourself or the fandom, or any closing remarks?

FONS: I had a lot of fun! I think we covered pretty much everything. Just of course thanking you for this opportunity, I feel super honored.

YESHUA: It was an absolute pleasure and honor getting to sit down with you and getting to know you better! So really, thank you for accepting the invitation! Where can people find you if they want to keep up with you, your adventures and work?

FONS: It was a pleasure, and again, just a big honor.

They can find me on social networks as @fonsthebun and on music streaming platforms as Fons The Bun.

Thank you again! This has been a total blast!!!

⊱─────⊰✯⊱─────⊰

That’s gonna be it for today, I hope you all enjoyed reading about Fons as much as I enjoyed talking to him! If you did like meeting him, I highly recommend checking out his socials he mentioned above!

As always, I’m on the lookout for cool folks to interview in the community, so if you think you or someone you know or follow would be an ideal person to feature, please reach out to me on my socials!

Keep Tahoe Furry is a brand-new outdoor furry event at the Granlibakken in Tahoe City, California, USA. Though the pandemic has thrown a few wrenches into the works, they’re finally ready to host their first event from Friday March 31 - Tuesday April 3 of this year. KTF bills itself as an alternative furcon without panels, dances, or scheduling, instead offering attendees an opportunity to create their own fun with friends and enjoy Lake Tahoe. Even so, there’s a fursuit sledding and group photo event planned for the last day of the con, and attendees are welcome to host their own small events. KTF is free to attend as long as you’re over 18 years of age, are vaccinated against COVID-19, and follow the venue’s mask guidelines.

Pawske Party will be held on Thursday April 6 at the Melahuset in Oslo, Norway. This furry dance club event branched off from a yearly furmeet that has grown beyond a private residence and is ready to rock all night long at its own venue! Before the DJs start spinning, enjoy events like the furwalk, group photo, quiz game, dealer’s den, and panels. For those who want to kick off the fun even earlier, a pre-party bowling meet has been arranged for the night before Pawske Party as well as a spa outing the morning after the furdance. Attendees must be 18 years old and show valid photo ID in order to register.

Stomp your way through prehistory at Fur Squared from Thursday April 6 - Sunday April 9! The con returns to the Sheraton Milwaukee Brookfield Hotel in Brookfield, Wisconsin, USA, and their theme for 2023 is Furassic Park. The schedule is chock full of excitement this year, with events ranging from dinosaur-themed Jeopardy to pin swaps to model railroading meetups and even - I’ll let this description speak for itself - “a cursed sketchbook swap dedicated to Garfield.” As you’re checking out the panels at Fur Squared, be sure not to miss those hosted by the Guests of Honor: vaccine researcher and developer Chise, and musical duo Keyotter and Rhubarb. In lieu of a fursuit parade this year, Fur Squared will have staff photographers available for photoshoots near the headless lounge and roaming around the con floor. Tabletop and video gaming, a dealer’s den, artist alley, and night market are planned as well. Fur Squared attendees must be vaccinated against COVID-19 and wear a mask at all times, including under fursuit heads. As their website states, if your badge is on, your mask is on!

A charity auction will be held and donations collected over the weekend for Forever Wild Exotic Animal Sanctuary, a non-profit dedicated to preserving the lives of abused, neglected and abandoned exotic animals through rescue, rehabilitation and education. The Guests of Honor are HuskyCo Fursuits and Fursnickety, the artist who designed GSFC’s mascots. Get ready to have a fantastic time at the aptly-named Fauntastic convention! This year’s theme is “Wild in the Street,” which I’m sure anyone passing by the DoubleTree by Hilton Lyon Eurexpo in Lyon, France between Friday April 7 - Tuesday April 11 would agree with. Planned events include a snack exchange, graffiti workshop, and fashion show, in addition to the standard furry con activities like a dealer’s den, group photos, gaming, karaoke, and dances. Programming is hosted in French and English, with Fauntastic providing translation services for attendees who need them. A unique aspect of Fauntastic is their specially-marked sticker areas on which furries can feel free to self-express by writing, drawing, and of course sticking surfaces to their hearts’ content! If you want to attend Fauntastic, keep in mind that you must be over 18 years old.

In fact, Furcationland will be raising donations for that very charity through a bucket brigade, charity auction, and A/V power hour during the convention. Other scheduled events include gaming demos, a writing slam, game shows, and comedy improv. Let’s not forget the dealer’s den, dance competition, masquerade, and nightly dances! Furcationland attendees should be prepared to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination and wear a face mask in convention spaces.

Programming and events have historically included outdoor games such as swimming and basketball, a variety show, fursuit events, and artist sketchbook swaps. The Guests of Honor are musician Matthew Ebel and artist Zola. Take a peek at the “Who’s Coming” list on WN’s website to start networking with the other furries you’ll meet at con! Lodging and meals are included in the registration cost. At press time, 2023’s COVID policies were not announced, so make sure to check the official channels for announcements as they come.

Calendar with April’s events.

On the calendar this month is our cover artist Sunni/TheRealWolfArtist having a ball-oon at Texas Furry Fiesta in March!

Wow, I’m amazed at just how many brand new furry conventions are holding their first ever event this April! I think it’s a great sign of our furry community’s continued growth, and how we can gather together to build a local scene while helping out those in our neighborhoods. If you can, why not show your support by attending, volunteering, or donating a registration to one of these furcons to help them get a strong start? Speaking of which, our Art 101 host Fika Monster will be attending Pawske Party, so if you’re going also, be sure to say hi! Remember to get vaxxed and wear your face mask when meeting up with any furs in person.

Got questions or suggestions for Convention Calendar? Feel free to drop me a line on Twitter and the Fediverse, or hit me up at any of the other platforms linked on my website. If there’s an upcoming event you want to ensure we cover here on Furry Weekly, don’t hesitate to let me know. Have fun and stay safe out there!

FURRY QUOTE

Welcome back friends, happy weekend! Lilli here with this week’s Furry Quote! I hope everyone’s had a great week! I hope you’re ready for this week’s quote, I think it’s a good one.

This week, we’re talking about:

Knowing Your Self-Worth

A quote by Kayil Crow.
“Live with knowing that you are priceless. That you are lovely. That you are a delight. Live with knowing that you are irreplaceable.”
~Kayil Crow

Sometimes everyone just needs a little encouragement. We all have days where we're just feeling down, like the world is working against us, like everyone hates us and we're just destined for failure. No one would even notice if we were gone. We're ignored anyway or everyone just seems to dislike us. If you find yourself feeling like this, remember a few little things.

You are priceless. Every human life is precious; no price tag can be placed on the life of a human, no value can compare to that of a human life. Your life is as precious as the most rare gem on the planet.

You are lovely. Yes, you. You're beautiful and handsome in your own special way. I challenge you to look yourself over in the mirror and find one thing you love about yourself. Keep that one thing in mind and remember that someone else out there really likes that about you, too.

You are a delight. You may not think so, but someone finds you a delight to be around. Maybe you listen to them. Maybe you give great hugs. Maybe you have a fantastic sense of humor. Whatever it is, someone loves to have you around and thinks very highly of you. Remember this.

You are irreplaceable. There is no one on this planet that is exactly like you. You are unique and individual, and no one can ever replace you. You are special, you are unique, and there is no one like you. Never has been, never will be.

And always remember that you are enough! You don't need someone else to complete you. Grow in yourself, get to know yourself better. You are all you need for yourself. Do what makes you happy.
