FURRY OF THE WEEK

Hello, everyone. My name’s Danielle, and welcome back to another edition of Furry of the Week!

This week is all about wholesomeness. Please welcome WoleverWuff!

Photo and fursuit by Zay.

Do you smell that? That smell is none other than WoleverWuff with some donuts! WoleverWuff was giving out Krispy Kreme donuts in their fursuit at Furry Weekend Atlanta (FWA) to all the folks walking around at the con.

Photo taken by ShaxyDoggeh.

Speaking of donuts, WoleverWuff has a sweet tooth for Krispy Kreme donuts as well. While WoleverWuff usually covers for the cost of donuts, FWA contributed this time around for it with a record of 40 dozen donuts being given out. That’s a lot of sweetness!

Congratulations on being Furry of the Week, WoleverWuff! Thank you for sharing your kindness with others by spreading some wholesomeness through those yummy donuts!

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

That is all for this edition of Furry of the Week!

We’re always on the lookout for candidates to feature for their amazing contributions to the community. If you have any questions about this segment or would like to send us a recommendation for a future candidate, feel free to contact Fizzy, Peppermint, or me. Tune in next time for another mystery Furry of the Week! I’ll see you guys next time. Bye for now!

ART CORNER

Hello, everyone! I’m Multifurse and welcome to Art Corner! I’ve got some great art to share with y’all this week, so let’s get started!

First up this week is a fun full body by carcinobeast!

Oh my goodness, this chimereon looks so grumpy! I love it! First of all, I really enjoy this pose; fitting the character perfectly into the square frame of an Instagram post makes him look like he’s been boxed up. That…might be why he’s so upset. Curling the tail over his back and over his shoulder was a great way to fill space and balance the piece between the left and right sides as well. There’s minimal shading in this one, but the shading that IS present on the teeth, claws, and horns really adds some visual interest. I like the darker shades of the main color highlighted with stark white. Speaking of white, outlining the character and the canvas in white was a fantastic choice for unifying this piece! Super cute, Ari, well done! Now please let him out of his box.

⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰

Next up this week is a cute half body by juju.doodle!

Ooh this one’s fun! The shading here is very rich! This piece has a fantastic amount of contrast from the base shadows to highlights to deep shadows to reflected light, and I am living for it! The reflected light being cobalt blue in color really helps it to stand out, and it adds such a nice additional pop of bright color to an otherwise darker piece. Some of the details, like the individual fingers on the hand are a bit harder to see, unfortunately, but overall I really enjoy the composition and the cool, dark colors. Using the shadows to add wrinkles to the shirt was an excellent touch, and the expression on the protogen is adorable. Great work, JuJu!

⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰

The last piece from me this week is a majestic full body by vronyakat!

This one is so intricate! There’s a lot going on here, so let’s take a look one piece at a time. I’d like to start off by looking at the background! We don’t get to see too much, just some clouds and a castle, but the castle is beautifully rendered! Even from this viewing distance, it has some noticeable details, making it stand out well. It’s not too distracting from the main focus of the piece, either, which is well done. There’s also a tiny bird down on the bottom left-hand side. Nice touch! Next, the character. This dragon is beautifully detailed, from iridescent scales all the way to her flowing hair. The posing for her wings is fantastic as well; this is a difficult angle to work with, and the wings still look natural and like they're moving fluidly! The hair and cloth blowing in the wind add some excellent fluidity and motion to this piece as well. The colors and smooth shading are beautiful, and the lighting work is excellent! Fantastic work, Vronya!

⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰

That’s all for this week! Many thanks to our artists, Ari, JuJu, Vronya, for allowing us to feature their works this week! If you liked what you saw, check out their pages and drop a follow if you feel so inclined!

If you’d like a chance to be featured in Art Corner, make a post using the tags #FurryWeekly and #ArtCorner so we can find you, or message us directly on our socials!

WRITING SHOWCASE

Hello, everybody! My name is Dozu, and I have for you today a short but thought provoking poem!

⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰

"a bug crawled across my windowsill"

By Krembearry

Summary: From the perspective of Dette, a sweet giraffe angel sees a bug on their windowsill and they ponder life because of it. They wonder what the little bug thinks and if it thinks of them the way they think of it.

Highlights: This poem is very short but to the point, it is nicely written and formatted so the reading flow is easy to follow.

For improvement: Except for the missing capital letters, everything else is on point. The verse separation, the commas, everything is where it should be. Good work!

Question time! Answer in a post and tag @FurryWeekly and @DoggyDozu if it’s on Twitter!

  • How would you react to seeing a bug on your window?

  • What’s your favorite kind of bug?

⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰

That will be all for today folks. I hope you have enjoyed my pick!

Let’s give our authors a round of applause for their hard work! Remember to include the tags #FurryWeekly and #WritingShowcase in your posts if you want us to see your own writing on any platform! See you all next time, and now I'll sashay away.

WRITING 101

The Camera is back in the amusement park on a beautiful May Sunday. The crowds are much thinner than the previous visit, so it doesn’t need to constantly check its surroundings to make sure nobody gets bumped. For now, though, it sits on a bench in a small asphalt plaza. The plaza greets guests to two of the most intense roller coasters in the park.

One path leads to a bleached concrete archway, where rockin’ country music accompanies American stock car theming and the tallest coaster on the East Coast. Another path leads to an indoor engineering marvel quickly approaching thirty years of age. It’s a roller coaster that somehow fits entirely inside a huge, windowless structure, including the lengthy queue. Because of the lack of windows, it’s so dark that there’s no way the Camera could get usable footage. Probably a good thing, too, considering its batteries and circuit boards tremble just thinking about the ride.

Somehow, that thrillseeker hawk defies most peoples’ fears of roller coasters. He absolutely adores the thrills; in fact, he hopped straight from the towering stock car coaster, offering a top speed of ninety miles per hour, to the enclosed coaster. It’s not only completely dark—it launches the train and its passengers right out of the station.

The Camera had to pause its thoughts. It would never understand how people could enjoy such rides. To distract its runaway electrical pulses, it quickly pulled out a recent recording of this week’s Writing 101 segment. Maybe this would pass the time better than thinking about those roller coasters...

⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰

Hello friends, and welcome to Furry Weekly’s Writing 101! I’m Bryce Griffin, here to get all you writers out there the inside scoop on literature tips and tricks. Let’s get started!

Tropes in film and literature crop up time and time again because they are popular ways to depict characters, situations, or ideals. They may be beneficial or detrimental tropes, but they nevertheless allow us to pin creative expressions to concrete definitions. This week’s discussion, though by name sounds quite similar, is significantly different from last week’s “Rule of Funny” trope. “Funny” lets the creator occasionally bend some rules for a comedic or enjoyable moment. “Fun” is a choice of how overarching content is communicated and delivered to create a consistently enjoyable reading experience.

The Rule of Fun deals with how the author handles the details that contribute to the overall story. In short: tedium, boredom, and real-life logistical details are the antithesis of fun, so the author has a responsibility to balance the facts with the fantasy to make a believable yet engaging story.

Much of this traces to video games, especially old school arcade games and the like. Do we need to know Mario’s entire backstory up until when we get to jump into the action? Do we need to know why Donkey Kong captures Paulina and hoists her higher and higher up the construction site? Absolutely not! The Rule of Fun dictates that we don’t need all of those little details. All the player needs to know is that Mario needs to climb up the girders and ladders, jump over barrels, and occasionally smash those barrels with a hammer. Many games like this were severely limited by the development tools of the time, forcing the fun gameplay to come first and a story to be built afterwards.

We’re writers, which means we’re not limited by what a computer can or cannot do. We’re only limited by our imagination. Given this fact, this is not a reason to bust out every tool at our disposal and dive into every single painstaking detail that composes our universe. It is absolutely good practice to research and sketch out the rules that make up the universe; it saves a ton of headache and possible contradictions down the road. However, as much as we want to, sharing every little detail with the reader is certainly NOT the best way to share a story. It can be extremely tedious and difficult to remember, which, as mentioned earlier, is the antithesis of fun.

Keep in mind that your reader is surprisingly capable of imagining what you’re describing. You also don’t need to present a paragraph or two every time a new concept comes up. Out-of-place information dumps create friction in a flowing narrative. Use caution when spending valuable words in your story on the details and information that holds up your characters and their universe. Too much detail equals tedious and boring passages, which go against the Rule of Fun that we authors should target in out writing.

⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰

As it finishes combing through the recording, a group of people come out of the large garage doors that serve as the ride exit. The final one to emerge is a familiar hawk, feathers mussed and ruffled, and his golden eyes are wide-open. Even from a fair distance away, the Camera’s microphone picked up his muttered and bumbling words.

“Good lord…” mutters Tad. His footsteps appear a little uneven, as if he lost some sense of balance since the Camera last saw him. “That was… wow....”

The Camera tentatively raises off of the seat. Tad waves it off.

“No no, I’m fine,” he says, though his tone suggests otherwise. “It’s just… wow.”

A quizzical whizz.

“I usually sit in the front,” he mumbles slowly. “I can see there, and they usually have a few dim lights on… but… this time was different.... I sat in the back, and it was completely dark. I got turned around, so I wasn’t prepared....”

Tad’s stare is quite vacant. Without asking, he takes a seat on the bench and visibly relaxes his muscles. His head flops back and he lets his eyes close.

“It was awesome… but… I think I… I need a break.”

The Camera snickers, relieved that Tad at least had a wonderful ride.

FURSUIT FANATICS

Hihi, everyone! My name’s tahlmorra and I’m your host for this and every week’s segment of Fursuit Fanatics. Today’s segment is going to be more than just a bit buggy and that’s entirely due to our special guest, Imago the Cicada! While there are no expected emergences of periodic cicadas this year, like Imago, if you live where they can be found you can expect your usual crop of annual species, of which there are many. That noted, let’s not waste another minute and dive right in to finding all about who and what Imago and the fursuit are!

Hailing from the beautiful Denver, Colorado area, Imago is the name of the fursuit being featured today and SnackHouse (or Snackary) is its owner. Both are female, going by the pronouns she/her. Imago is, specifically, a Magicicada Cassini which you might know better as the 17-year cicada and was one of the main species in the massive Brood X hatching fairly recently, back in 2021. Imago has a dark brown body with yellow belly, abdomen, wings, and brown-tipped hands and feet. She has bright reddish-orange, yellow-rimmed eyes that match her arms and legs and her antennae, mouthparts and proboscis are all a light tan.

Imago is Snackary’s first proper fursuit, made by Lemonbrat; first as a partial back in 2021 and then they made the fullsuit in 2022. She also has a raptor mask that she made previously, but that’s incomplete and set for a refurb as time allows. There’s a snake head base as well, although he’s been stuck in “maker’s limbo” since he was first received. Regarding special features, Imago has a hollow proboscis through which you can put a really long straw and actually drink. “It’s great, people never expect me to be able to drink through it and reactions are always very fun.” Regarding any future plans she may have for the fursuit, she told me she’s looking to make a custom lab coat for her “since she’s named after [an] SCP and I’m thinking that I can definitely do something with that.” She’s also looking to figure out a way to strap a GoPro to Imago’s head since she’s interested in possibly vlogging future conventions. Noting that I hadn’t caught the SCP connection, she said that it was a lesser-known SCP (3004), but cicadas feature heavily in it, saying she “saw an opportunity and took it.”

When asked if the years listed above were the years she commissioned or the ones in which she received Imago, Snackary told me that Imago was a premade that had been around the convention circuit a bit before DenFur. Going in, she had no intention of buying a suit, noting that she’s not really into mammal suits – instead preferring birds or reptiles with bugs being a special favorite. She recalls thinking, “ok if they have a bird or a dragon it’ll be tempting but there’s probably nothing that will catch my eye.” Then she saw Imago from the far side of the Dealer’s Den and thought, “Oh, no…” The Den closed right after and she says she spent the night awake, staring at the ceiling and trying to decide whether or not she wanted to buy her. Clearly, she did and decided to go all in not long after when she got some cash to work with.

As for fursuiting activities she enjoys, Snackary says she goes to most of the local meetups, usually in Imago but sometimes in her other suits when it’s hotter outside. She also loves going to conventions, the first she attended being DenFur 2021 – which was also where she got Imago – and her favorite being AnthroCon. And, while conventions can be great fun, “you can’t go wrong with running around local parks and playgrounds, I never grew out of those!”

Imago says she’s been to DenFur, AnthroCon, Midwest FurFest, Furry Migration, Biggest Little FurCon and the Texas Furry Fiesta. As for furry meets, she describes Paws on Pearl and Clement Claws as great local meetups hosted by good friends of hers, “...so in my totally not biased opinion they’re my favorite.” Furry Pinball Night at the Flipside is also a great place to hang out, she says. She likes to go with her brother, describing him as a “pinball Wizard” and the venue as a place where their interests overlap.

Circling back to the nature of Imago, I mentioned that it was kind of surprising that she happened to find a bug fursuit at the same time she might be considering getting one, and that the demand for bugs must be on the far lower end of the scale. I mentioned I had interviewed a moth fursuiter who happened to be in that week’s issue of Furry Weekly.

“Was that moth called Moff or Queblock by chance?,” she asked. I agreed that it was, and she enthusiastically replied, “Eeeeey! They’re a buddy of mine! All the bugs always meet up at cons.” Saying that the bug meetups sounded and looked like a lot of fun, Imago told me that it’s a tradition of sorts, that the bugs always find each other at cons and then follow each other around. “There’s quite the kinship between bug furries since there’s not many of us and it’s always exciting to meet more.”

Next we got on with asking everyone’s favorite question: when and why did you become a furry? Snackary’s reply goes back again to SCP. She met with a group of friends on an SCP server, and one was a furry (all the group members are now ‘converted’) and, upon seeing a dino mask “cringe” compilation, was completely taken by the moth movement. The idea of a costume that could do that was very exciting to her. She always liked dressing up as an animal every Halloween (or any excuse she got), as well as writing stories with anthropomorphic characters (mostly dinosaurs) from a very young age up to the present day. She says she hadn’t really understood what being a furry was because, like most people her age on the internet, she thought it was just a sex thing. However, seeing a thriving asexual community within the fandom not only showed her it was so much more, it also helped her realize her own asexuality in the process.

I asked if she’d mind clarifying, not quite understanding how an activity often misaligned with negative sexual behavior could turn into a positive reinforcement for an asexual mindset. “No worries,” she answered, “I’m happy to talk about it. So, realizing the furry fandom wasn’t a sex thing was the first part, but seeing other creators talk about their sexuality, specifically being asexual/aromatic opened my mind to the idea that ‘oh, not everyone feels sexual attraction, I don’t feel sexual attraction and that’s ok’ I wouldn’t have met many other ace people outside the fandom but it being such a queer friendly space let me actually realize these things about myself and bond with others.”

Thanking her for the different perspective on the furry fandom and her well put response, I asked when it was she thought she first entered the fandom. Early 2021 is when she said she first fully accepted that she was a furry, although she didn’t really “own it” until the end of that same year. Admitting she’s very new to the fandom, she described it as the best thing to happen to her and that she feels it a pleasure to be a part of.

Next I wondered how it was that people reacted to Imago, and her to them, being a “non-standard” fursuiter. “Most people think it’s extremely cool,” she says, “even to the point of having several comments along the lines of, ‘I hate furries, but your suit is really creative.’” She finds most people think she’s a moth at first look and think that to be “pretty damn cool” but they’re always even more surprised when she says she’s a cicada. “I only know of one other cicada suit; they were in Canada I think and I don’t know if they’re still active. Not everyone can say they were the only one of their species at the biggest FurCon in the world and it’s still wild to me whenever I think that.”

Still, as fun as it may be to be the only one of her kind, she says she’d love to see more cicada suits and characters in the future, even just bugs in general. As an aspiring fursuit maker who intends to only do the weird species, and bugs especially, she’s clearly found a niche that could use some filling.

Touching briefly on memorable or humorous in-suit experiences, Imago said she couldn’t think of many on the spot, but there was one particular time when went down a playground slide during what she described as an “already very static filled affair [even] without a suit” which turned her into a “Tesla coil.” Something that probably wouldn’t have been so bad save for that her antennae are metal (poseable wire), and all of the static zapped her in the forehead. “Not as bad as it sounds,” she said, “but still.”

Nearing the end of the interview I wondered about any specific likes and significant dislikes she had. “I love animals, especially bugs, birds and reptiles as well as writing and gaming,” she began. “I hate anyone who treats animals poorly as I’ve been working with rescue animals for pretty much my whole life. My biggest (and very specific) pet peeve is people who think it’s ok to remove a scorpion’s stinger to make it a better pet; it’s even worse than declawing a cat since the venom helps with digestion.”

Future important fursuit goals include making her two other main ‘sonas into suits, starting with Marianas, her sea monster, and Leah, her cockatrice. She also hopes to make suits based off of different SCPs.

For anyone interested in learning more about Imago and SnackHouse, or wishing to follow them, you can find all their socials at their Linktree which they keep updated with all their important stuff.

And with that, we come to the end of another week’s installment of Fursuit Fanatics. Please give a nice round of applause to our guest for spending her valuable time here with us today. Come back next week when we share this stage with a real (not really) man-eater and take a deep dive into aquatic fursuits!

Remember, if you think you’ve got a suit deserving of more attention, or know someone who does, you can let us know by posting on most major platforms with the tags #FurryWeekly and #FursuitFanatics. Who knows, you could be the next fur featured in this segment!

I hope everyone has a great day and a better week and I’ll see you all next time. Remember, stay safe, stay well, stay furry!

FURSUIT DESIGNING TIPS

Hi all, Olivier here with the sixth segment of Fursuit Design Tips.

Hand Sewing Techniques

I'm gonna be talking about basic hand sewing techniques here, and as this is something easier shown than told, I'll try to do my best to show clear drawings.

Do not hesitate to look up these names for YouTube videos, it's often easier to see someone do things then figure it out by yourself.

When making fursuits I rarely use a sewing machine as in my opinion I have way more control over my sewing by hand.

The main stitch I use is the blanket stitch.

The blanket stitch keeps fur tight together and locks in on itself, so when seams pop it won't result in your entire suit falling apart as easily.

You can easily tie a knot into this stitch by going through the loop one extra time; I do this every now and then to really keep it together. This stitch works best on knit material and not so much on woven!

I use an invisible stitch when closing off tails or paw pads on handpaws; it's a stitch made to close off ‘pillows' of material.

If it's long fur and my thread matches the fur colour, I at times also use a baseball stitch because it’s faster, but for a neater result the invisible stitch is the way to go.

Below are the different seams I use shown as clearly as I could with art, as photos got out of focus fast.

If you have found a better way of stitching fur together please tell me! I love to learn new techniques!

I hope this was informative and never hesitate to send me your questions or feedback trough Instagram!

CHARACTER INTERVIEW

Hi you all! Thanks for joining us for the Character Interview segment – your one stop for meeting and getting to know folks in the fandom! This is Yeshua, your host, and as always I’m very happy to present you all with another interview!

Yet again I’ve got a fantastic guest who I’m looking forward to chatting with, so let’s not waste any time and just get into it!

YESHUA: For today, I am very excited to be joined by Moon! Thanks so much for taking the time to chat! Could you tell me a bit about who you are and what you do in the fandom for those who are reading about you for the first time?

MOONDARA: Hi! First of all, thank you so much for having me here, I appreciate it! I’m Moondara, but I’m usually called “Moon”! I’m a Mexico City girl, currently studying illustration and concept art, focusing on 2D animation. I’ve been in the fandom for a while, I like posting lil animations on Tiktok & Instagram, as well as my animation process. I also started rigging furry Vtuber models recently! So I also share on social media a lil bit of my process on those!

YESHUA: Wow, that's definitely a ton of stuff you're getting up to! I'd love to chat about each of these things, but let's start with your illustrations and concept art since I feel that will lead us to everything else, hahah. You say your focus is 2D animation; tell me a bit about how that's going. What exactly do you animate, and are there certain projects or goals you're working towards as you continue animating?

MOONDARA: Sure thing! I’ve always loved animation, seeing all those Disney movies growing up inspired me a lot! I’ve always wondered who worked behind those movies and series. So when I found out there was a career on that I just knew that HAD to be my thing.

I mostly illustrate and animate animal characters. Feral ones are my favourite to work with! I like creating my own animal characters and stories, so if I have the chance to animate something related to that, I WILL! I mostly just do random animations of my characters in different contexts with funny or cute audios. I also sometimes like making animation Tiktoks of my own fursona doing funny stuff like suffering because of art school and stuff like that.

I’d love to work in an animation studio someday! But I also want to keep on pursuing my own personal projects, I want to keep on animating my own characters and developing their worlds and stories!

YESHUA: That's all so cool! Not only are you pursuing this professionally, but it sounds like you are having a lot of fun as you do, which I think is always important, because you should totally enjoy the things you do! Do you have a favorite project that you've completed so far at all? I'd love to hear about it if you do!

MOONDARA: Yeah! Totally! I like having fun while learning! Most of my projects so far are mini shorts/Tiktoks but I do have a smaller project that I ended completing. It’s a series of three small one minute animated shorts following a character named “Lixue,” a snow leopard, in different contexts of her life. I made them a couple years ago and they are probably my first animated completed mini project haha! So it holds an emotional value for me.

PART 1: “Dreamy Vibes” | PART 2: “What If” | PART 3: “On the Edge”

Unfortunately I only uploaded two of them on Instagram but the third one is on TikTok!

YESHUA: Cómo dirían en México, quedaron bien padre, no manches! Todavía hablan así en México? Anyway, sorry! Those are superb! You say that the series featuring Lixue is your first proper project? Well if that's your first completed project, it's honestly exciting thinking about what you could accomplish now! Are you working on any animation projects at the moment! Or have you done any recently?

MOONDARA: Claro que yes, aún hablamos así! Haha, thank you! I appreciate it a lot! Currently I’m working on school animation projects. I’m on my last year of uni so I’m helping out with a couple of thesis films! Unfortunately I can’t share those on social media since we’re trying to get them on animation festivals in the future. But, in my free time I work rigging and animating Vtuber models!

YESHUA: Ah aún recuerdo algunas cosas jaja. But of course! And well, I understand not being able to share those uni projects, but I wish you the best with them! I'm sure you're gonna do great! And yes, that was something else I noticed about your work. You said you recently started rigging VTuber models; tell me what that's been like! And what got you interested in that?

MOONDARA: Thanks! Hopefully I’ll be able to share them soon with everyone! I started making Vtubers since I just got fascinated by the idea of getting your own character following your gestures via face tracking! With any simple camera! I saw lots of beautiful anime Vtubers, but I wanted to make a furry one for myself! That’s how I discovered I loved rigging as well! It’s been a little rough, especially at the beginning. Since there’s not a lot of tutorials on furry/animal Vtubers. So rigging things like ears, fluff and especially snouts has been a total challenge!

YESHUA: Props to you for sticking with this and learning despite the challenges! I think I've seen some completed work in some of your posts, but you tell me -- have you been able to finish any models? Are you working on any right now or plan to?

MOONDARA: Yea! I started rigging by the end of 2021, I’ve completed about 13 models by now! I’m still currently working on new ones. I opened commissions a while ago and they do take quite some time to complete, but some of them are on their way! Haha.

Nyxie Expression Showcase | Nicolette 2.0 Showcase

Some of my completed models!

YESHUA: 13 models?? Wow, and those you shared look so incredibly well made! I'll be honest, I haven't seen too many furry VTuber models -- but even so, these have to be some of the best out there. They look very interactive, visually appealing, and of course, the expressions are so natural and lifelike!

I've got so many things I'd like to ask.. let's see. First, how do you feel about being able to bring characters to life this way? You said you were fascinated by the avatars you used to see, but now you're the one making them, and at such a high level! Would you say you're happy with how far you've come when it comes to rigging, or are there other goals you're aiming for?

MOONDARA: Thank you so much! I’m really glad you liked them! I’ve been working really hard on learning more about the rigging program – in this case, Live2D. I look back at my first models and compare them to the new ones and I’m definitely happy! But there’s still so much to learn tho, there’s some amazing riggers out there who keep me constantly inspired on learning more! I want to eventually get into hand tracking and create more complex models!

YESHUA: Of course, I do mean it! It's great to hear you are happy with the progress you've made, I definitely think you should be. But it's also great to see you're still pushing yourself to accomplish even more; I have no doubt you'll be able to reach those goals you have of making even more complex models! As for the learning process, have you been learning on your own for the most part? Have you gotten help from someone at all?

MOONDARA: Since this is a quite new program there’s currently not a lot of ways to learn it. I’ve mostly learned by watching YouTube tutorials. Recently I’ve seen some other riggers share tips on twitter or posting learning files on Ko-Fi, so I would say I’ve been learning mostly by looking at what other artists are doing!

YESHUA: Good on ya for finding ways to learn, though! I'm sure your efforts are gonna pay off! I know you mentioned you opened commissions for your models some time ago; is this what you're hoping to keep doing as you work toward more complex models? Making them for others as well as yourself?

MOONDARA: Yup! Exactly that! Working on other people’s fursonas has also helped me get out of my comfort zone by exploring different types of designs and stuff like that! So at least for now that’s what I’m gonna be working on!

YESHUA: It's great hearing that getting to draw other people's characters has helped you grow as well! You said you've completed 13 models, so I'm curious, is there any particular one or few that perhaps challenged you the most? Or that you were especially happy with?

MOONDARA: So far 13 is the actual number of models! Also, yes, each one of them is challenging in their own way! But I think so far “Nicolette” has been the most challenging one , since she was the first rig in which I managed to turn the snout & mouth correctly! It took me days to figure it out so I’m really happy with that one!

YESHUA: That looks so fluid and natural! It'd be awesome to see it in action on a stream, but just from that reel alone it genuinely looks great! Another question about the models you've made so far: have most of those been commissions or not quite?

MOONDARA: Yeah! I’ve only had the chance to work on two of my own characters! Haha, and I’ve made those same characters twice so yeah! Most of the models I’ve done have been commissions hehe

YESHUA: I'm telling you, it's truly impressive how far you've come with this in the span of less than two years! I'm assuming you use your own model for streaming? Or did you just make it as practice, perhaps?

MOONDARA: I did make it originally for streaming! Unfortunately I haven’t been able to set up everything to do that due to time issues, so I just use my models in some of my TikToks every now and then!

YESHUA: Ah, sorry to hear that, but it's good you do still get to use them a bit! What kind of stuff do you like to create with your models on TikTok?

MOONDARA: It’s mostly just funny short videos with voiceovers with my models! Or maybe sometimes when I get to do art process videos I’ll add my model talking every now and then hehe! Not much so far but I don’t want to leave my babies unused haha!

YESHUA: Pretty neat, to be honest! It might not seem like much but there definitely aren't tons of folks out there who use their VTuber models outside of streaming! Definitely put em to good use though! Heh.

Is there anything else you want to share about your experience with VTuber models? Anything we didn't touch on, or maybe didn't talk about too much that you'd like to bring up?

MOONDARA: Thank you! I think we’ve covered everything I could think of so far!

YESHUA: Gotcha! So we've talked about your animations and your models, is there anything else you do in the furry fandom that you'd like to chat about?

MOONDARA: Hmm, I think that’s about it actually!

YESHUA: Alright! Then, I suppose the only other thing I'm curious about hearing is -- how'd you first get involved in the furry fandom? What attracted you about it when you first joined, and what interests you about it now?

MOONDARA: Oof! There’s two things that got me here. First, I’ve always loved animated animal characters! I’ve always found really fun & fascinating the concept of stories focused on animals! And the second thing, is that I’ve been surfing the internet for a loong time now! I think I first saw the concept of furries back in 2012? Maybe? By browsing through Deviantart. Finding a community that enjoys these types of characters as much as I do has brought me so much joy! I’ve met really nice people within the community, I’ve had the opportunity to make new friends and also I just love how much creativity you can find in the fandom!

YESHUA: Pretty straightforward and reasonable reasons to be part of the fandom! Is this how you interact with the community for the most part? Just online?

MOONDARA: For the most part yes, I do have a couple of in real life furry friends that I’ve gotten to know in art school though!

YESHUA: I see! It must have been pretty cool to meet other furries in school, huh? But again, it's impressive seeing all you do online and the presence you have; your work is just gorgeous! Well, it's been a delight chatting with you about you and your work in the fandom; I've had a lot of fun! But before we wrap up, is there anything else you'd like to share at all? Or any closing remarks?

MOONDARA: It’s been a pleasure talking to you as well! Thank you for having me! I think that’s about it! I’m really thankful to be able to be part of the fandom, get to know other artists and share my artwork!

YESHUA: The pleasure was all mine! Thanks again for coming on and sharing your work!

Programming and events have historically included outdoor games such as swimming and basketball, a variety show, fursuit events, and artist sketchbook swaps. The Guests of Honor are musician Matthew Ebel and artist Zola. Take a peek at the “Who’s Coming” list on WN’s website to start networking with the other furries you’ll meet at the con! Plenty of fun awaits FWA attendees, including a Dealer’s Den, Artist Alley, and Moonlight festival. The Guest of Honor is Jacato, an illustrator known in the furry community for his colorful slice-of-life paintings. Additionally, FWA supports Animal Park at the Conservators Center as their charity for 2023.

Furry Down Under, also known as FurDU, will be held Friday May 12 - Sunday May 14. The con has a brand new venue this time around - the Crowne Plaza Hotel Surfers Paradise & Oaks Hotel on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia. With a theme like Game On for 2023, there’s a lot of potential for folks to go all-out with their outfits, costumes, decorations, and events! Three days’ worth of excitement await attendees, such as multiple fursuit games, trivia, dance competitions, a talent show, and dances each night of the convention. On the schedule, you may notice panels hosted by Magicdawolfy and Adler the Eagle, the two Guests of Honor. Every year, FurDU raises donations for Fresh Start Rescue, an organization that assists with rescuing animals from shelters, fostering them, and giving them a new forever home. Furry Weekend Holland will be taking place Friday May 19 - Monday May 22 at the beautiful De Berckt Castle in Baarlo, the Netherlands. For over a decade, this convention has brought furries together for games, dances, markets, food, and fun. If you notice more cowboy hats, lassos, and spurred boots than usual, that’s because the theme for 2023 is Spirit of the West! FWH events have historically included photo ops, raves, an inflatables meetup, fursuit activities, and a dead dog party, so attendees can expect more of the same this time around.

The Oáza srdce hotel in Horní Bradlo, Czech Republic welcomes the furries back for the annual ZodiaCon, from Wednesday May 24 - Sunday May 28. Last year’s events included fursuit games, hangouts, and photoshoots by a picturesque lake; just imagine what ZodiaCon has planned for this year! Those looking to network with friends and make new pals at ZodiaCon will be happy to know there’s an attendee list on their website, complete with country of origin and even photos. Convention materials, panels, and important announcements will be available in Czech or Slovak as well as English. You must be 18 years old to attend ZodiaCon.

At the same time, Furlandia is happening just a few states away at the Sheraton Portland Airport in Portland, Oregon, USA. Furries from all around will gather between Friday May 26 - Sunday May 28 for yet another iteration of the annual convention. Furlandia is breaking the mold this year by theming their convention “Your Character Here,” and instead of selecting one or two specific individuals to highlight, every attendee is being celebrated as a Guest of Honor! Fursuit and non-suit dance competitions, a Dealer’s Den, and Artist Alley are planned. Keep an eye on Furlandia’s website for further details, including the schedule and charity of choice, as information is announced. Here’s your monthly calendar with all the events listed here for May! It was done by our cover artist Sunni, featuring our Human Resources Manager and second-in-command, Carkas, repping Confuzzled in the U.K.! Our President, Yeshua will be at Furry Weekend Atlanta, so don’t be afraid to say hello!

I’d like to spend a moment addressing common questions about what we cover in the Convention Calendar segment here at Furry Weekly!

Q: Why do you list conventions for the whole month instead of each week?

A: As you’ve just read, the majority of furry cons happen on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, which, coincidentally, is when Furry Weekly releases new issues. If we waited to update Convention Calendar on a weekly basis, many of the cons would be partly finished or have already ended, which wouldn’t give our readers enough time to go to them!

Q: Why leave up the cons from earlier in the month if they’ve already happened?

A: Furry Weekly’s fantastic graphic artists make a calendar image for the entire month. Those event names would still be on the calendar, except without an explanation of what they are.

In addition, when people search online for furry conventions they can attend, Furry Weekly is frequently in the top results - particularly for cons that don’t get a lot of mainstream coverage, or whose sites are primarily in another language. Cons without a large online footprint can be greatly assisted by Furry Weekly gathering all the important details in one place.

Q: Where do you find the conventions you write about?

A: Mostly via word of mouth and a LOT of research! Many established furry cons are well-documented and happen at the same time each year. I also scour the Web to look for upcoming first year furry cons, furry cons outside of North America, and lesser known furry cons. These events often benefit the most from being featured in a publication like Furry Weekly.

Q: How do you pick which cons to feature?

A: Furry events come in all shapes and sizes, and being exclusionary is no fun. Basically, if the event bills itself as a convention and is geared towards the furry community, that’s exactly what we’re looking for! There must be at least one official public webpage with verifiable info where prospective attendees can find details such as dates, location, how to register, policies, and programming.

Q: I help run a furry convention that’s coming up, and we’d like to get the word out. Is that possible?

A: Absolutely! Just contact me before the month in which the con takes place, and I’ll make sure I have all the details I need to cover your convention!

Q: I’m not on staff, but I’m going to a furry con soon - will you write about it?

A: I try my absolute best to give our readers comprehensive con coverage, but I don’t know what I don’t know! Get in touch with me at least a month in advance so I can ascertain your con is on my list.

Got questions or suggestions for Convention Calendar? Feel free to drop me a line on Twitter and the Fediverse, or hit me up at any of the other platforms linked on my website. If there’s an upcoming event you want to ensure we cover here on Furry Weekly, don’t hesitate to let me know. Have fun and stay safe out there!

FURRY QUOTE

Welcome back friends, happy weekend! Lilli here with this week’s Furry Quote! I hope everyone’s had a great week! I hope you’re ready for this week’s quote, I think it’s a good one.

This week, we’re talking about:

Challenges, Mistakes, and Learning

“A setback is a setup for a comeback.”
~Bishop T.D. Jakes

No one likes a delay on something. Setbacks frustrate us, put us in a bad mood, and discourage us. We all experience setbacks of some sort, and we all handle them in different ways.

Regardless of how you handle your setbacks, perhaps you just need a change in perspective on what a setback can be. As the quote says, every setback is a setup for a comeback. It’s an “every time you fall you get back up and run even farther” kind of situation. Don’t let the setbacks conquer you. Take advantage of them. Look into the future and see what sort of comeback this setback may have set up for you. Who knows, maybe what happens next is better than what your original plan was!

No matter what happens, don’t be discouraged. Keep looking forward and fight for what you want. Choose to use your setbacks as launchpads to a new, brighter comeback.
