WRITING SHOWCASE

Hello, writers and readers! It’s Danielle making a surprise appearance for this segment, and this week we have a story about a Riolu named Dysmas.

⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰

A story called “Aura’s Manipulation Part 1: It’s a Lonely Road, Dysmas!” by Llli on FurAffinity.

Aura's Manipulation Part 1: It's a Lonely Road, Dysmas!

By Llli

Summary: As outlined by Llli, Dysmas the Riolu has recently run away from home to seek out answers from the ancient lake guardians because of some item or person that has been missing from the town for multiple months. People in the town have been panicking over such an important thing suddenly vanishing, and amidst the constant outbreak of violent Pokémon, one question lingers in the minds of all – will getting this thing back fix the situation? Will Dysmas get the answers he expects from the lake guardians? Find out in the next few chapters of Aura’s Manipulation!

Highlights: Having the story start off with Dysmas the Riolu in a monologue felt like a great attention grabber to know more about what was going on. The separated paragraphs helped express each part or thought that was running through Dysmas's mind. Very nice!

For improvement: There were minor grammar and capitalization issues, but it’s nothing but a quick fix. Possibly having a little detail somewhere about Dysmas’s current location can help illustrate to the reader how far Dysmas must travel to get to the lake guardians. However, that might get addressed in the next chapter of Aura’s Manipulation.

Question Time! Feel free to answer along by making a post and tagging Furry Weekly either on Instagram or Twitter/X.

★ Do you have a pokesona?
★ Has your pokesona ever set off on an adventure to solve a big mystery?

⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰

That’ll be all for this week’s storytelling. I hope you enjoyed it! Let’s give our author a round of applause.

Eager for us to showcase your own story or poem? Feel free to fill out this form if interested. You can also submit content by emailing furryweeklysubmissions@gmail.com, or you can directly message me on any of my platforms.

Thank you for reading along with us, and we’ll see you around!

SPECIES SPOTLIGHT

Hello readers, and welcome back to an exciting week of Species Spotlight! This is Danielle making a return as a guest host.

Before we put the spotlight on this week’s original species, I wish to let all of you know that we’re still looking to recruit more hosts for this segment. If you enjoy diving into species lore and/or find original species fascinating, then this might be for you! Feel free to message our boss, Yeshua, or our HR, Carkas, if you’re interested in hosting Species Spotlight.

This week we are exploring a world where animals become household appliances by Koko!

An Amalglam named Veero.

What are Amalglams?

Amalglams are a species that came into being due to appliance manufacturers combining the concept of the house pet with convenient household items. This involved experiments with equipping animals with electronic parts which were powered by the host's heartbeat and brain. While these enhancements could offer a number of useful features like allowing animals to communicate using human languages, the companies interested in manufacturing these Amalglams only wished to mass produce obedient house pets.

Because of this, many models of Amalglam have been known to malfunction in a variety of ways, ranging from rediscovering their free will to going berserk or breaking down completely. Other models allow for customization, which was initially meant for humans to make these creatures their own. The Amalglams themselves can learn to change the components on their body. Some humans still use Amalglams while others fear them. Ones who have gained free thought usually keep away from humans altogether, but when berserkers start destroying things, humans more than often go on Amalglam hunts, disregarding which ones they end up destroying.

To learn more about the Amalglams, feel free to check out this post.

A Gameboy Advance Amalglam sitting on top of a TV Amalglam.

Basic Rules / Guidelines

In order for a character to be considered an Amalglam, they must:

Have an object head. This would be restricted to electric machines like TVs, computers, toaster ovens, dryers, particle accelerators, Geiger counters, etc. No objects like trees, houses, pots, rocks, beds, or swords. Some exceptions may apply to prototype Amalglams.

Not be able to breed. Members of this species were all once normal animals, but after production they were neutered or spayed to prevent owners from breeding them.

Consider themselves Amalglams. This means that not all object heads are Amalglams; just those who decide they want to take part in the Amalglam backstory.

To spice up your Amalglam, you may:

Add robotic limbs. This depends on the host animal, but mechanical limbs of any style may be fitted onto arm, leg, and tail areas. There can be more limbs added onto a character than the host originally had.

Update your Amalglam or keep an older version. Amalglam production spanned over a few decades, so there is a wide selection of makes and models of appliances that were fused onto these creatures. Feel free to get stylish.

Make a mythical Amalglam. These are a mix and match type of Amalglam made to look like a mythological creature, but if they resemble a familiar form like a dragon, gryphon, kaiju, etc., they would be categorized under this title.

Make a mix and match Amalglam. Throw together all kinds of parts to make a completely new creature.

Creating an Amalglam

Amalglams are an open species, which means you’re welcome to create your own. This species is still a work in progress, so for now, if there are any questions, Koko will gladly answer them. Koko is mainly active on Bluesky, but you can also find them on FurAffinity, Instagram, and Twitter/X.

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

Thank you for tuning in to this week of Species Spotlight! I hope you enjoyed learning about the Amalglams today. There are plenty of creative original species out there, and we’ll be sure to hunt them down.

Ready for us to explore your original species? Feel free to fill out this form if interested. You can also submit content by emailing furryweeklysubmissions@gmail.com, or you can directly message me on any of my platforms.

As Coyote Peterson from Brave Wilderness says, stay wild, and we’ll see you on the next species adventure!

ART 101

Let’s talk about Furry Anatomy!

Art 101: Furry Anatomy Basics & Beyond

Balance, weight, and structure: The torso of the body acts as the key center for everything else we’ve discussed thus far. How we understand the weight and motion of the torso allows us to more keenly piece together the forms of our subjects.

Hi all, Shroom here! It's time to begin part five of our long lesson in the art of anatomy.

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

Torsos are a bit of a special case. In part because the torso has to function as the main connecting center for the rest of the body and in part because the torso itself is not confined to one singular form.

When it came to legs, arms, hands, and feet we had the luxury of working with a finite structural shape whose variety depended more on the species of the fursona rather than the actual structure. Torsos complicate that because they largely inform how the rest of the body will interact with each other. Either via muscle or shape.

Torsos come in a variety of different shapes and structures. So, for our purposes we’ll break down the torso into key components first. Then take those key components and experiment with shape and exaggeration.

Torso breakdown at three different stages where segments and shapes are highlighted.

So, let’s start with the shapes and get used to drawing the torso in general. You’ve likely heard or perhaps have viewed the top of the torso as something akin to an “egg”. This isn't an entirely false visual shorthand. In the third section of the breakdown, we can see that the ribcage and its structure can be visually condensed into an oval or an egg. The two extraneous circles act as the placements for the shoulders.

Moving down, the hip can be viewed as a rounded triangle. Or, for me, that joint in a typical action figure or poseable art doll.

A stock image of two poseable art reference action figures.

BODY KUN DRAWING MANNEQUIN MODEL

I prefer this shape as it allows me to quickly place and understand the forms of the hips and legs.

You’ll notice, curiously, that the abdomen is absent in section three. The main reason for this is because of the nature of the abdomen’s movements. Depending on how the figure is posed, the abdomen may be stretched, relaxed, or squished. A simple line helps with indicating flow. Whereas in section two, both flow and shape are considered.

Section two is largely where I start before moving onto the details of muscle and form. These four components, the chest, stomach, hips, and thighs, help for the base understanding of the torso for our subjects.

But this is only one example of a singular body type. What if we were working with an entirely different subject?

Well, that’s where exaggeration and shape come in! By breaking down the torso into these four visual components, we can adjust them accordingly to the type of subject we wish to capture.

A series of torso variations that depict the shape language of different body types.

It’s also important to note the differences of masculinity, femininity, and androgyny. Typically, you may see masculine body types be broken down via boxes and feminine body types be broken down via curves.

This initial understanding gets across the idea of viewing body types as shapes, but I find it to be rather restrictive in the long run.

Not all masculine body types follow a strict, rigid, or boxy structure. Not all feminine body types lend themselves to simple, exaggerated, or curvy structures. Androgyny doesn’t even really have a set list of guidelines to begin with as it deals with individual self expression: actively playing around with the gray zone of these structures and what lies outside of them.

So, what do we do?

Shapes.

I can not emphasize this enough. The shapes of the body type you’re actually trying to emulate matter far more than twisting them to fit into simple categories of “box” and “curve”.

People come in a variety of different shapes and structures. Those shapes are the important part, not fitting them into predetermined categories.

Having the mindset to use these shapes more loosely and freely in the subjects you draw, will pay off in the long run.

So let’s get to posing and weight. Much like our discussion about feet, torsos act as the center of mass for a subject and thus affect the nature of the pose – when we start putting all of our lessons together, I’ll go into this concept in more detail. For now, we’re gonna look at pillows.

An odd shift in the conversation, but a necessary one. Trust me.

Pillows have a generally soft and loose form. The weight they possess, stuffing rather, heavily informs their shape. The torso is no different.

Quick drawing exercise: imagine the torso as a pillow or a flour sack. Think of how the form bends or folds, the weight it holds, and where.

This is a common visual exercise for animation, but helps us understand the importance the torso holds and its forms.

Short animation showing the drawing technique of the zig-zag method.

Animation "Flour Sack Waving" by SASHA MUTCH

Additional exercise: take one of studies of a pose and apply it to three different body types. Take note of the differences in shape structure and how they relate to one another.

It’s a silly comparison, but a valuable one when it comes to the lesson of anatomy.

Once more, I encourage you to do some anatomy studies with the help of the website Line of Action. Go to the figure drawing option on the main page. One of the great aspects of the website is the sheer variety of models within their catalog. Notably for this lesson, you can choose all genders or focus on one. Studying the individual nuances between each will allow you to more easily handle the sheer variety of fursonas the fandom creates.

CHARACTER INTERVIEW

Hey you all, it’s Yeshua here again to bring you another Character Interview segment! This is the place to learn about some of the people in the fandom and the cool stuff they get up to, so I hope you’ll stick around for today’s chat!

YESHUA: I'm super excited to talk to today's guest; this time we have Markus joining us! Thanks so much for taking some time to chat! Now, for the people who may be reading about you for the first time, can you tell me a bit about yourself and what you do here in the furry fandom?

MARKUS: Hiya! I really appreciate you reaching out for this! Like you said, I'm Markus (i use they/them and it/its pronouns). I'm a queer disabled artist who has been in the fandom for around 20 years at this point and I've been a fandom artist for most of it.

I'm currently a stained glass artist who also draws very brightly colored, trippy/drippy artwork! I've also made fursuit parts but that is very far and in between.

YESHUA: Woah, you've definitely been around the community for a while! Always cool to hear about folks sticking around in the fandom, especially creating for it! I'm glad you brought up the stained glass because that's what I'd like to focus on, so let's see what we can get through! Tell me, what exactly is the stained glass artwork that you do?

MARKUS: Yeah it has definitely been a while. But the kind of glass work I do is a bit fandom related, a bit of fanart, things like that. One of my favorite things to work on are large projects though. I like making the smaller stuff but when you can make something that takes both hands to hold its pretty freaking cool. Let me give a couple examples!

Two stained glass fursona pieces.

YESHUA: See, just when I think I've seen everything folks in the fandom have to offer, someone comes up with something new and creative! Those are so incredibly cool! What can you tell me about the process of making this kind of artwork? How does it all come together to make those rad pieces?

MARKUS: First is the artwork! All of my large pieces are 100% original art!

So once you get your idea, you have to figure out how to pattern it. Not gonna lie, the first couple patterns I made did not work out very well in execution, but the more you do it, the more you learn what the glass will do; how it will break, what kind of curves and pieces are even possible. It's been really cool learning this skill to be honest. I then cut the pattern out on my vinyl cutter.

Next is the glass! After you pick your glass – I'm lucky enough to live in a place with a massive glass store only ten minutes away! – you're going to score it and break it with special tools. Then you have to grind each and every piece which is honestly the part I hate the most. Then foil the edges, solder, polish, patina, and you're done!

YESHUA: Definitely sounds like a decently long and very precise process. Forgive me if I don't understand everything right off the bat. So when you pattern the idea, it sounds like you do it on vinyl? Then once you have the pattern cut, that's when you move onto actually creating all the glass pieces as you just talked about?

Sketch breakdown of two stained glass pieces.

MARKUS: Yeah! So after I draw up my pattern in procreate, I essentially cut out a big vinyl decal to pull my pattern pieces off to transfer to the glass.

I think this is the only picture I have of that part of the process but it's from when my partner was making his D20 Dice.

Cut vinyl pieces for a project.

YESHUA: Gotcha, that makes sense! And then you do end up having to cut several glass pieces to match the vinyl pattern which you later put together into one whole piece? Am I understanding that correctly?

MARKUS: Yep! Each individual solder line you see on a stained glass piece are all individually cut pieces. A full finished glass hanging can have anywhere from two or three, all the way to several hundred. My largest finished project has been 107 individually hand cut, grinded, and foiled pieces. It took... a long while to finish. It was my personal fursona one.

YESHUA: Wow, that's insane! So talking about just how much there is to this process, I do want to ask, how long does it usually take to finish a stained glass piece? Any other pieces that have taken you the longest?

MARKUS: For my large ones it can range anywhere from 10-30ish hours. Between every single step – scoring, breaking, grinding, foiling – each individual piece can take up to twenty minutes of work, so multiply that by however many dozens of small pieces, it definitely takes a while!

I think the one that has taken me the longest is either my personal piece – took me around 15 hours total – or my partner's fursona piece, which was actually my very first stained glass project!! I kinda just… jumped in with both feet!

Stained glass fursona piece hanging from a tree branch.

YESHUA: It's seriously impressive hearing just how much time this artwork requires, but wow, does it look phenomenal! So far I think this one you just showed is my favorite, totally not because I have a bias for felines! But for real, it really is just so cool to look at and admire for a moment! I do want to talk more about how it is that you got started with doing this, but before that, I want to ask, what would you say are the biggest challenges you run into when doing these stained glass pieces?

MARKUS: Oh the biggest challenge is definitely the glass not cooperating. Glass has a mind of its own, to be honest. You can make a perfect scoring line, but when you go to break it, it may go the complete opposite direction of what you need. It's absolutely infuriating, especially since not only is glass expensive, but when you're on the last piece and just want it to be done and it breaks.. yeah that's the worst…

YESHUA: Heck, that does sound pretty tedious.. I know you said it's like the glass has a mind of its own, so when you're trying to break it, is there nothing you can do to keep it from breaking the wrong way? Is that just something that you kinda have to accept may happen during the process?

MARKUS: Yeah you kind of just have to accept it. You can be the best glass worker in the world and still, the glass does what it wants.

YESHUA: I can see why you'd say that's the biggest challenge, yeah. Aside from that, something that I'm curious about is if there are any limitations for the kinds of shapes and colors you can use for this kind of artwork. What can you tell me about that?

MARKUS: There are a few limitations with shapes actually! Very thin pieces are very hard to do; the glass snaps if it hits the grinder bit just right or you put too much pressure on it at any point. Pieces with deep curves are very hard to do without either a special grinder bit or a specific kind of saw.

Colors are kind of endless to be honest! The only limitation that I know of is pink glass. There's a whole process and reason why which is really interesting if anyone wanted to look it up! But the store near me has so many different kinds of glass sheets that it's sometimes hard to pick the right ones for a project.

YESHUA: It's good to hear you've become familiar with what sort of issues you may run into, and it sounds like overall you can still achieve a lot! If someone wants one of these, can they get them from you? Do you offer them as commissions at all?

MARKUS: I do offer them as commissions! I have a free quote form in my Linktree! The fursona pieces start at $400, but honestly I do quotes for everything – fanart, cool plants, etc – and prices can range anywhere from $40 to $1000+ so there's a lot of wiggle room!

YESHUA: Definitely a lot of stuff worth checking out it looks like! So now that we've talked about what to expect from your stained glass projects, I do want to touch on the origins like I mentioned earlier. Tell me, how did you come up with the idea? What led you to making your first piece, and realizing this was something you wanted to do more of?

MARKUS: It’s been a craft I've wanted to do for… a long time. I've always been an artist and a crafter, i've done everything from crochet to chainmaille, to quilting, and many many more things, but glass was always one that I reaaaaally wanted to try.

Finally moved into a house with some extra space, and I had just killed it in the MCFC artists alley. I had seen a lot of glass work TikToks and finally was like, "yeah I’m just gonna teach myself how to do this," so I bought everything I needed for the very beginning – I have since upgraded – and taught myself with that first fursona head for my partner since I always try to put a furry spin on my things!

Now I'm addicted to it in all honesty. The work you can produce with this craft is so freaking cool I dont think I can stop until my body finally says "that’s enough."

YESHUA: It's really cool that this one craft you wanted to try so badly worked out well for you! It's such a unique medium I doubt many others in the fandom have even thought about. How long have you been working on these glass projects at this point?

MARKUS: Yeah I've seen and heard so many comments about how I'm the first stained glass artist they've seen in the fandom. I know there are others but it feels pretty freaking good regardless!

I've only been doing glass art for around five months to be honest. I picked it up kind of quickly!

YESHUA: Five months?? And you've already done so many pieces! Wow, that's seriously impressive! I know it hasn't been that long, but do you have any future plans for these kinds of projects? Anything new you'd like to try or any specific projects you'd like to take on?

MARKUS: I have a couple very large-in-size projects in the works but honestly I'm just making whatever random small things for con fodder right now.

YESHUA: I gotcha! Is there anything you can share about those large projects you're working on? Any sneak peeks? No worries if you wanna keep it under wraps though, just curious!

MARKUS: So I'm doing all four of the MLP princess stained glass from the movie! They’re gonna be roughly two feet tall when they're done!

Concept sketch of MLP project.

I'm incredibly excited for these to eventually be done! It's gonna take forever though.

YESHUA: Holy heck you weren't kidding when you said they were very large! That's really cool though! Totally something worth keeping tabs on!

Well, it's been so good talking to you about these incredible projects you've got going on! It's definitely one of the most unique things I've seen here in the fandom! Is there anything else you'd like to mention or touch on about the glass projects, or anything else you do in general?

MARKUS: I think we covered pretty much everything I would have to say about glass work! Other than if you're on the fence about trying it, absolutely go for it! It's an incredible hobby!

Thank you so much for this opportunity! It was absolutely lovely to chat with you about this!!

YESHUA: Thanks again for joining me, it was a great time talking to you!

FURRY QUOTE

Howdy all! Tide again. I hope everyone is doing well. For this week I decided to pick a quote by the wonderful Alek Wel, as we come around to, in my opinion, possibly the most beautiful time of the year in the USA: Autumn!

A quote by Alek Wek.

”The most beautiful things are not associated with money; they are memories and moments. If you don't celebrate those, they can pass you by.”

~Alek Wek

With Autumn just around the corner, I think it is a good time to discuss finding beauty in the moments, and who better to have a quote from than model and fashion designer Alek Wek. I think it is easy for us in the furry fandom to forget that beautiful things are not always associated with money. Yes, fursuits and art cost a lot of money, and many of us derive a lot of happiness from them, but in spite of how beautiful a fursuit may look, if it’s just sitting in your closet, if you don’t celebrate something you love with the people you love… Well, I think you are missing a chance to bring even greater beauty and joy into your life.

Beyond the furry community, in everyday life remember to look for the beauty and the stories around you. It's not about expensive shoes or designer clothes. Remember to look up. To the orange and red hues of autumn leaves. To the smile of a complete stranger walking past you or the crack in the pavement that definitely didn’t just cause you to stumble. Because remember that just like you, sometimes the world is too much for the pavement to take sometimes. And isn’t that beautiful? Finding stories where most people forget to look and making memories out of them. Celebrating them. Even better if you can share them with others. Laugh together at your own mishaps and celebrate your achievements. That is what makes life beautiful, not the expensive trending clothing.

Big corporations love to make us think that beauty comes from looking a certain way or owning certain items, and I don’t mean that in a conspiratorial way, it is quite simply how they make money. Owning and celebrating things like that is totally fine too, so long as we remember that we are surrounded by so much beauty that is completely free! So regardless of where you are in the world and what season it is, remember to find beauty in the little things. The way the leaves whisper in the wind and the sun glows off of lakes or ponds or even puddles. There are stories everywhere. Memories just waiting to be unlocked. Beauty, just sitting there. Waiting. To be recognized.

That’s it for this week’s Furry Quote. Now that you are all caught up, I hope you take the time to find the beauty in something you might normally forget to look at, and maybe it will make your day a little bit brighter.

Do you have a quote or topic you’d like us to discuss next? Feel free to submit content by emailing furryweeklysubmissions@gmail.com, or you can directly message me on Instagram.

Thanks for stopping by, and until next time.

All the best,
-Tide
