Hey you all! Thanks for joining us for another edition of Furry Weekly! This is issue #280!

Once more we’re starting with our usual announcements and we want to keep your attention on the ‘Recruiting’ section below. We’re still needing a lot of help to make issues every week and bring you new content. This goes hand-in-hand with why today’s issue is much shorter and lacking segments, which we do apologize for. We’re working hard to get some extra help on our team, but remember this is a passion project, so that’s why we’re asking for your help specifically! So please read on below and consider helping!

ANIMAL OF THE WEEK

Hello everyone! It’s Zed Shirogane and it’s another animal of the week segment!

Animal of the Week is a segment where we highlight an animal that is really cool, cute, creepy, or just plain fascinating. There will be a coloring page illustration for you all to print out and color in at home, as well as an adoptable character inspired by the animal of that week. The best part? All proceeds made by said adopt will be donated to conservation charities!

Whenever possible we do symbolically adopt the animal, but only some animals have the privilege to have that as an option unfortunately; thus we collect extra funds to donate to many different species conservation charities or send funds to scientists so that they can research underappreciated animal species, so we can in turn learn more about the world around us. Join us on this fun adventure!

We’re continuing our series on Possums this week!

Possums are a suborder of 70 tree-living marsupial species native to Australia and the Indonesian islands of New Guinea and Sulawesi. While their names are similar and both are marsupials, possums and opossums are different creatures. Opossum typically refers to the Virginia opossum and its cousins in the genus Didelphis, all of which live in North and South America. Both possums and opossums will be included in this month’s articles. Both of the English words possum and opossum come from aposoum, which means “white animal” in Powhatan, a Native American language.

One key difference between the possum and the opossum is their tails. A possum’s tail is thick and furry, much like that of a squirrel. The name of one of the most widespread possum species–the common brushtail possum–highlights this feature. An opossum, on the other hand, can be recognized by its signature bare tail. With coarse fur covering its whole body up until the tail, this creature more closely resembles a large rat than the fluffier possum.

While possums and opossums both fall under the general class of marsupial, they belong to different orders. Possums belong to the Diprotodontia order, which is the largest existing order of marsupials with approximately 155 species; the name “Diprotodontia” comes from the Greek word meaning “two forward teeth.” Other common diprotodonts include kangaroos, koalas, and wombats. The possum falls under the suborder Phalangeriformes, a group of small to medium-sized arboreal marsupials. Opossums, on the other hand, belong to the Didelphimorphia order. This is the largest order of marsupials in the Western Hemisphere, comprising over 110 species. The name “Didelphimorphia” follows the Latin naming convention and refers to “two wombs.”

This Week’s Species: Derby's Woolly Opossum (Caluromys derbianus)

Characteristics

Big-eared opossums closely resemble another Neotropical marsupial, common opossums (Didelphis marsupialis). In fact, this species was once considered a subspecies of D. marsupialis. Big-eared opossums have prominent facial markings and a conspicuous black line down the center of their forehead. Their ears are naked and black. Their fur is dirty yellow, with black or gray tips. Big-eared opossums have long, prehensile tails that are furred at the base. The fur at the base of their tail is about as long as their hind legs and is at least half black and half white; the black portion is sometimes longer.

Fun Facts

Big-eared opossums are scansorial, nocturnal and solitary. They are mainly terrestrial, but their relatively long forelimbs and claws allow them to easily climb trees. It has been argued that big-eared opossums are exclusively terrestrial and only go into trees to escape flooding, but other studies have shown that using proper techniques, big-eared opossums can be trapped or tracked in trees as frequently as on the ground.

Habitat

Big-eared opossums live in Atlantic rainforests, secondary Atlantic forests, and Araucaria highlands. They are also found in forests fragmented by urban development and deforestation. Big-eared opossums live in Atlantic rainforests, secondary Atlantic forests, and Araucaria highlands. They are also found in forests fragmented by urban development and deforestation. Their habitat has two discrete seasons, a warm rainy season, which lasts from September to March and a cool dry season, which lasts from April to August.

Diet

Big-eared opossums are opportunistic omnivores that mostly feed on arthropods and fruit; but also consume other invertebrates and small vertebrates. These animals are known to consume the following invertebrates: millipedes, harvestmen, beetles, grasshoppers and crickets, gastropods, butterfly larvae, ants, isopods and crabs. Big-eared opossums are also known to eat fruit from 13 different families including 22 identified species. Most fruit is consumed during the wet season when it is most abundant.

Life Cycle

In the case of big-eared opossums, the breeding season coincides with the wet season, when fruit is most abundant. Like other marsupials, big-eared opossums undergo a brief gestation period and give birth to tiny young that crawl into the mother’s pouch where they attach to a nipple and feed for about 100 days. Weaning generally occurs at the end of the rainy season, while food is still available for the young. Little information is available on the lifespan of big-eared opossums, but their close relative common opossums have an average lifespan of 2 years in the wild.

Conservation

Big-eared opossums are one of the most common marsupials in their home range. They were trapped with the highest frequency in most studies conducted in coastal Brazil involving small mammals. However, deforestation rates in that area are high and only 5% of the original rainforest remains. This may pose a threat to big-eared opossums and other rainforest species in the future.

Adopt

All funds from this adopt will go to animal conservation. The goal for this month is to save up to symbolically adopt possums/opossums through a donation to Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network: which requires a total of $75. This adopt will be one of 4 total created to achieve this goal and hopefully more, extra funds are pooled together to be donated to conservation research programs. It will be available for $30 at Shirogane Studios.

WRITING 101

Ten days of running around… ten days of non-stop action and travel… ten days of incredible sights and hikes that left his joints sore and his muscles aching. Two countries, two wedding celebrations, multiple walks in unexpected rain, a broken-down rental car, and four flights later, Tad finally rests in total peace and quiet. He lays down on the love seat in his apartment, laptop propped up in his lap and feathery head sunken deep into his pillow.

His suitcase lays open on the floor. Dirty clothes, newly-acquired trinkets, and travel supplies lay strewn out on the floor, where some of it is haphazardly organized while the rest looks like it ejected itself from the suitcase. The hawk has little intention of making headway with the mess; instead, a blank document is open on his computer, cursor blinking steadily to invite the current week’s Writing 101 topic.

Tad simply groans. He wouldn’t have traded the world for his amazing opportunity to hike the Cliffs of Moher or witness his friend’s marriage. But to get straight into work after coming home from such a busy and exciting vacation… it leaves him wishing he could take a few more days off for recuperation.

He stares at the blinking cursor. Maybe the segment would write itself if he stared at it for long enough....

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

Hello friends, and welcome to Furry Weekly’s Writing 101! I’m Bryce Griffin, here to get all you writers out there the inside scoop on literature tips and tricks. Let’s get started!

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

Title saying A Place That Breathes.

The two previous Writing 101 segments covered Heroes and Villains, going in-depth on how to make them believable, intriguing characters for your stories. Today’s discussion follows a similar approach. Instead of characters, we’ll look at how locations in your story can greatly contribute to a living, breathing world.

Locations in a story need more than acknowledgements of their existence. They need descriptions that make them come alive by engage the reader’s senses.

What exactly does this mean? We’ve heard the phrase “Show, don’t tell” before, including in previous Writing 101 segments. This idea is no different. Its application deals more specifically with how to build up a key location by touching on multiple aspects of how it presents itself. The intention is to “breathe life” into this location by showing not only what it looks like, but by also showing smells, sounds, touch, temperature, humidity, or anything else of note.

This may seem obvious because showing rather than telling is a crucial rule of storytelling. But how does this actually translate into words on paper? How does it make us authors consider what is worth showing? Remember that the ultimate goal is to drop the reader right into the setting with concrete descriptions.

If there are people at this location, what do they sound like? How do their conversations or behaviors contribute to the overall atmosphere? How does the air temperature feel, especially if the sun is beating down or a biting wind is blowing? Is the air carrying any scents? Do any sounds make themselves heard? Remember that ambient sounds like rustling tree leaves are still sounds, and even a gentle breeze or the brisk morning air contribute to the reader’s senses. Brief but punchy phrases quickly communicate a place’s tone, so making wise use of your language will allow you to efficiently deliver a lot of easily-digestible information to your reader.

As you build up the descriptions of the location, keep in mind that you don’t need to expand on every little detail. You only need to say enough to build a solid foundation. Avoid dumping everything onto your reader at once—this tends to also happen with character introductions and plot expositions. You’ll probably know the ins and outs of every single detail that composes a place, and that’s perfectly normal! Just remember that your reader will not know those same details. Build up a foundation so that you can help your reader get familiar with how that place ticks, then let your storytelling do the talking. You’ll be surprised how much a reader can fill in with their imagination. The place will grow and feel more alive as the story spends time in it, and your reader will understand more of that place as you build those details that truly make the location a unique part of your story.

Thanks for joining me in Furry Weekly’s Writing 101. I hope you enjoy the rest of the magazine!

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

Tad slowly begins to type. It takes several minutes for his brain to kick back into gear after such a long time away from writing. Even then, he doesn’t move very fast. Had he another week to chew on an idea, it would definitely let his train of thought straighten out and be more efficient come writing time. But for now, he needs to push through to get thoughts on paper.

Tad stops about halfway through his writing. He glances at the suitcase. Poking out from one of his new shirt purchases, where a colorful toucan delicately balances a pint of stout on its enormous beak, the Camera rests undisturbed. It is powered down, for Tad had securely packed it away for the travels but never remembered to turn it back on.

The hawk stares at the visible bit of the Camera for a brief moment. He contemplates booting it up to welcome his pal back home, but decides against it. Even a machine needs to rest at times, right?

So Tad turns back to his laptop. The still-blinking cursor invites him to continue… but Tad’s tired and wandering brain quickly conjures up a warm, comfortable bed piled high with thick blankets. Finishing this week’s segment would never be able to compete with such an image.

Maybe he needed a little help with these writings… or just some rest....

FURSUIT FOCUS

What’s up everyone? Yeshua here for another edition of Fursuit Focus! I’m covering for our usual host tahlmorra, but we’ve still got some fursuiters to share and today is no exception!

Beau Husky is here with plenty of shenanigans and wholesomeness for you!

Beau posing with one hand on his hip.

Look at this adorable boyo! Beau is a husky who is honestly just a joy to see. His design is relatively straightforward but still looks great! Most of his body is white and gray with a bit of black and pink that stands out in certain parts. He’s got black ears as well as a couple of spots, one on his tail and one on his chest near his shoulder, and also some black fur on his shoulders and upper arm. As for the pink, you can see it on the parts you’d probably expect: the inside of the ears, a little bit of the nose, and the paws! Then there are those lovely light blue eyes that complement the rest of the design so well! Put all of these colors together with that smile and subtle blep, and you’ve got a really cute canine! Another couple of neat details are the cheek fluff and the little bit of white and gray hair. All of this comes together to make a character design that’s not incredibly complex, and simply very easy to appreciate; just a great, fluffy doggo!

Beau standing in an open field, arms raised a little and paws flat.

As the cute husky that he is, Beau loves taking lots of photos and making videos when he fursuits! He enjoys incorporating some of his other hobbies into the content that he makes, which is why you’ll sometimes see him playing the piano, making some bread, even doing some exercises! I think it’s safe to say Beau’s content is pretty slice-of-life oriented, which definitely has its appeal! I dunno about others, but seeing fursuiters do everyday things makes those usually mundane actions into something more interesting, since of course most of us probably go through these experiences in the regular world without seeing big fluffy animals doing them.

Beau in front of a piano keyboard.

Most of Beau’s content is actually done in his apartment – which I think adds to that sort of slice-of-life feel his content has – and it’s all shot by either him or his husband. Beau says he hasn’t quite had the courage to fursuit in public to take photos and videos, but is very interested in going to some canyons nearby and taking some photos in that scenery! Hope he can get to do that, it sounds awesome!

Aside from making content and taking photos, Beau does fursuit when going to conventions, and he also likes fursuit cuddles with his husband in the winter! I won’t lie, fursuit cuddles seem like a simple, but pretty neat way of enjoying fursuiting in addition to usual activities like taking photos and going to cons! So although it might feel like Beau doesn’t do anything super crazy while fursuiting, he’s no doubt having fun and making the most of his experiences, which is definitely what fursuiting is all about! Oh, and he also mentioned that for the most part, Beau just tries to look cute and fluffy which, at least in my view, he’s definitely succeeding!

Beau posing with both paws on his face.

Beau ordered his fursuit in late 2020, so he’s been in the scene for at least a couple of years at this point! He says he wanted a fursuit since 2017, so he saved up for a few years. Beau’s motivation to get into fursuiting was the “'‘excuse’ that the suit gives [him] to break out of [his] shell, be goofy and lighthearted, and have fun!” Beau says his suit helps him break from his usual introverted and perfectionist self. That’s definitely a sentiment tons of fursuiters have mentioned before, and it makes sense! It almost feels wrong not letting loose when you’re a big, fluffy animal! Beau also doesn’t have a ton of time to fursuit currently since he is a student; he’s only able to suit up about once or twice a month, but it’s clear he still takes the time to enjoy it when he does!

Beau laying on the ground surrounded by tennis balls.

Beau’s start in fursuiting is one that a lot of people can probably relate to! He was first exposed to the fun of fursuiting through YouTube. He vividly remembers watching a video by Faux Films where two fursuiters competed to see who could give the most hugs in 15 minutes, which he thought was cute and wholesome – with good reason! Who wouldn’t do a challenge like that? Beau says he wanted to do cute things like that as a fursuiter, and to some extent, he definitely does some wholesome stuff! As for what he enjoys the most about fursuiting now? He likes to share his interests and passions in a place where he feels supported and without as much anxiety he gets from being introverted. If you have a look at Beau’s social media, he does just this: post fursuit photos and videos doing things he likes, and it’s awesome to see lots of people enjoying it! Always good seeing folks have the opportunity to show off their hobbies in a way that makes them happy, so good for ya, Beau!

It’s clear that Beau is pretty well established in the fursuiting scene, and no doubt more adventures are coming! Whether they involve silly fun, piano performances, a little bit of bread baking, or anything else Beau wants to share, you bet he’s going to have a good time doing it and just hopes others can enjoy it also! I’ll close this last bit with some great remarks from Beau about how meaningful fursuiting is to him:

”I just want to emphasize how grateful I am for the opportunity to have my fursuit, and I do not want to take it for granted. My experience with suiting and the fandom has certainly had its highs and lows, but I have learned so much from it, which makes it even more valuable to me.”

Beau laying down with his feetpaws up.

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

With that, another Fursuit Focus segment has come to an end. Thank you as always for joining me! I really hope it was a fun read; I know I had a ton of fun getting to know Beau and writing about his experiences as a fursuiter! If you’re looking for wholesome, fun, or chill slice-of-life fursuit content, Beau’s the husky for you! Give him a follow if you’re interested!

You all know the drill: we’re always on the lookout for fursuiters to feature on here! If you, your friend, or your favorite fursuiter comes to mind, please tell us! You can grab our attention by using the tags #furryweekly and #fursuitfocus when you post to social media, or you can reach out to me or our usual host, tahlmorra!

As I’ve said before, I’m covering for tahlmorra at the moment, so I’m not sure if I’ll be back next week. Whether I am or not, I’ve been Yeshua, and it’s been a pleasure bringing you this segment! Until next time, take care!

PHOTOGRAPHY 101

Hello, friends and photografurs! Welcome back to this week's Photography 101! I'm your host, Jaden. In today's issue we’ll be going through a rare and stunning phenomenon in photography!

Accidental Renaissance

Accidental Renaissance is a term given to photos that reflect the art trends of the 14th century. What makes Accidental Renaissance so special is that these photos were completely unplanned and had a large number of variables that all aligned perfectly to create a beautiful photo. To understand Accidental Renaissance, let’s go over the defining characteristics of art in the Renaissance period.

During this period, we saw a rise in strong, dramatic emotions appearing more in art. Themes like grief, jealousy, anger, and contentment appeared in just about every painting during that period, granting these paintings to have a more dramatic appearance compared to previous painting styles. During this time, symbolism was also very prevalent; chiaroscuro, which is the dramatic contrast of light and dark on a subject, was used to symbolize good overcoming evil.

Now that we have an understanding of Renaissance art, we can have a better understanding of Accidental Renaissance. Accidental Renaissance are unplanned photos that incorporate dramatic themes, lighting, or emotions.

A large group of french protesters climbing a large statue. It is night time and a man on top is lighting the image using a white flare

Source: devoutlydissent728

This photo is a perfect example of Renaissance trends in a photograph. The first thing that catches our attention is the incredibly strong chiaroscuro across the entire photograph caused by the flare held up high. When we examine the photo further, we see some details in the photo that add symbolism, like the statue of an angelic woman towering high above the protesters and looking off into the distance. When we examine the photo even closer, we notice some of the protesters are sitting on the arm of a statue holding a torch, which was a symbol of enlightenment in the Renaissance. Despite these not being intentionally placed in the photo, they unintentionally add symbolism to the photo and add even more to its message and context. All of these things together, and the photo itself being unintentional, create the perfect example of a photo that fits the term accidental Renaissance.

While Accidental Renaissance is not a style that can be intentionally created due to the core of the style being random chance, it is still an excellent phenomenon that deserves recognition. any photo you take that accomplishes accidental renaissance is almost guaranteed to be one of your favourite photos.

CONVENTION CALENDAR

Greetings, lovely readers! This is Shetani, your Convention Calendar segment host. November is a transitional month for both the northern and southern hemispheres, with the seasons changing as autumn and spring really hit their full stride. Snow or sunshine is on the horizon, and many furries seek to take advantage of the last few weeks of temperate weather by attending events. Let’s find out about some of the November furry conventions and events happening online, around the world, and in your neck of the woods!

Biggest Little Furcon infographic.

A convention that certainly lives up to its name, Biggest Little Fur Con hits the scene at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nevada, USA. In an unexpected move that polarized social media, BLFC selected midweek dates of Monday October 30 - Thursday November 2 for 2023’s iteration; only time will tell what the furry public thinks of a non-weekend convention. BLFC’s theme is Curse of Coeurasa, a sequel to 2019’s theme, about which attendees can learn more by reading the expansive lorebook and listening to the podcast on the theme page of the con’s website. Events and attractions include a dealer’s den, art show, dance competition, escape room, and even more fun planned. BLFC is expected to partner again with Safe Haven Wildlife Sanctuary, a non-profit wildlife rehabilitation center that has been the con’s charity of choice since 2014. Attendees must show proof of initial COVID-19 vaccination and one booster or equivalent.

Furry Blacklight infographic.

Furry Blacklight will take place from Tuesday October 31 - Saturday November 4. The Hilton Paris Charles De Gaulle in Tremblay-en-France welcomes furry fans back for another iteration of this yearly French furcon. Perhaps you’ll feel a touch of greatness as you roam the venue’s stately halls, as their theme this year is Welcome to Olympus! The schedule promises many exciting events, including an intro to furry law, Vtuber panel, meetups of all kinds, fursuit Twister, and even a booth where you can get tattooed at the con. FBL offers regular and after dark Dealer’s Dens, with over 60 artists represented, for attendees to shop art, crafts, and wares. If you’re staying overnight at the hotel, consider entering FBL’s door sign crafting competition, whose willer is to be announced at closing ceremonies. You must be 18 years or older to attend FBL. There will be no day passes or tickets sold at-con, so if you missed pre-registration, you’re sadly out of luck - but there’s always next year!

PAWCon is coming to the DoubleTree San Jose Hotel in San Jose, California, USA from Furday November 3 - Sunday November 5. The theme this year is “Tu-Deer England.” Guest of Honor RoboGenko, an artist skilled in many pursuits, will host a printmaking panel, so be sure not to miss it! Aside from that, events and attractions include a Shopping District of furry wares, panels, nightly dances with DJs, dance competitions, and an entire party floor of the hotel. For the first time, PAWCon offers underPAW, an 18+ space for exploring freedom of interests, which promises to be a great time. Let’s not forget the charity auction to benefit the Street Dog Coalition, helping provide free medical care and resources to the pets of people experiencing or at risk for homelessness. Pre-registration closed in October, though day passes and weekend passes will be available for purchase at the door.

World Wild Fur Camp infographic.

World Wild Fur Camp is a brand-new furry event scheduled for Friday November 10 - Sunday November 12. This self-proclaimed furry camping experience is hosted at Camp Campbell Gard in Hamilton, Ohio, USA. Their inaugural theme, “Quest For Camp Campbell-lot,” reflects in many aspects of event programming, from the various guilds attendees can join - aligned to attendees’ age and preferred activities at WWFC - to scheduled events with a medieval flair. Check out the schedule on their website for a full scope of camp activities, what to bring, and what to expect during your time at WWFC. Furry content creators Adler and Blazen are hosting a Guest of Honor meet & greet and a dinner with registered VIPs. Speaking of registration, hurry to WWFC’s website and claim your spot, since there’s a 300 attendee cap this year! Attendees must provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination.

Furcation Camp infographic.

Travel where no furry has gone before at Furcation 2023: “Space: The Final Fur-Rontier!” The annual furry caravan park event returns to the Sandy Glade Holiday Park in Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset, UK, Friday November 17 - Monday November 20. Furcation is held at a holiday camp as opposed to a hotel, and their website lists amenities included with each accommodation. Expect a dealer’s den (rebranded the Cargo Hold to fit the theme, of course), nightly dances with guest DJs, board and card gaming, outdoor balconies for party rooms, and attendee led panels during your vacation stay. Don’t miss out on the concert by Fox Amoore and Jake, dance competition, meetups, game tournaments, and even more, all of which are described in detail on the schedule page of Furcation’s website. One great thing about Furcation is that events are open to all attendees, which means that you can join in everything, even the group photo and games, without a fursuit. A charity auction and meet & greet will be held to benefit Coventry Small Animal Rescue. Pre-registration is closed, so here’s hoping you already signed up! Attendees must be 18 years or older and present a valid photo ID.

Midwest FurFest infographic.

Last but not least on our docket is Midwest FurFest, currently the largest in-person furry convention in the world! This year’s iteration is from Thursday November 30 - Sunday December 3, taking place at its time-honored venue, the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois, USA. This year’s theme, Snow Days, fully embraces the winter wonderland which often envelops MFF - anyone who’s attended previously, or even browsed through con pictures from past years, can attest to the captured memories of fursuiters and non-suiters alike making snow angels, having snowball fights, and posing in a winter wonderland! Their schedule is packed to the gills with exciting activities, so check it out on MFF’s website to begin planning your fun-filled weekend. 2023’s Guests of Honor include fursuit maker Wild Acai and author/artist Jackaloo. The charity this time around is the Live Like Roo Foundation, an organization providing emotional and financial support to families whose pet faces a cancer diagnosis. In addition to a Dealer’s Den, MFF offers a unique Artist Menagerie - subdivided into the Artist Alley and Marketplace - where attendees can browse wares for sale and watch the making of art unfold live.
