FURRY OF THE WEEK

Hi, everybody! It's Rizou here, back to bring you this installment of Furry of the Week.

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

In recent times, this segment has featured numerous acts of furry generosity– like our recent feature with Chester and the success of his GoFundMe. So too, have recent world events transpired that ask for the support of those who can provide it more than ever. So keeping with that theme, today's Furry of the Week is someone who embodies the giving spirit of our fandom. In the world of furry charity, they're sort of a big fish…

MelonNoct in fursuit holding one of her giant fish plushies to be auctioned for charity

This week, our featured fur is MelonNoct, a craftsperson who has taken her talents to fundraising. Every con she attends, she and her partner, Eldritch Rave, create a giant fish stuffed animal to be auctioned off at the con's given charity event. Since 2021, Melon has auctioned off a fish at Denfur twice as well as once at Texas Furry Fiesta (TFF), with the proceeds going to Horseback Miracles and C.A.R.E respectively. Her latest silly, scaly creation garnered $500 of support at Denfur 2023!

On top of that, MelonNoct also creates all sorts of furry arts exclusively for charity. Right now as we enter September 2023, you can find her working hard on fursuits that she is selling for the purpose of helping people in the wake of the devastating Maui wildfires, and her work in the past has supported causes such as Ukraine.

A screenshot of Melonnoct's charity post, auctioning fursuit apparel for the Maui Strong Fund

I got a chance to speak with Melon briefly about this passion, and she gave me a few powerful words on what they do. Speaking on her choice to donate, she explained:

"I like crafting, but I don't really like making money off of it. I find it far too stressful. If my skills can aid someone in need, I'd much rather do that…

Charity is so important to me because there's people out there who need more help than I do. I'm fairly well off in most regards (health, living, ect). What I can't offer in money directly, I can offer in skills for someone else that has the funds to purchase.

Of course it's all charity dependent."

For me, this is not only an inspiring sentiment, but it paints a pretty picture of this fandom. In some way, the furry fandom itself is all charity dependent. From volunteers and donations at cons, to the network of artists, to news articles like this, our community is built on support for one another. While for many the furry fandom can be a grand escapism, it is also keenly in touch with the earth and making it a better place to be for each other and ourselves. How beautiful is that?

In a world that is constantly changing and undergoing strain, work of those like MelonNoct serves as a reminder that we can be agents of help. In another example, I find myself thinking about issues like AI artistry and I take comfort in the fact that art like MelonNoct's takes power in its monetary value not for greed but for common good.

At the end of the day, worries are not hard to come by, but moments of kindness are not hard to create. The giving nature of our fandom is something we can all take pride, and take part in. Thank you MelonNoct for your contributions proving and providing pathways for that fact. Congratulations on being our Furry of the Week! And to any readers out there, go check out MelonNoct today if you want to get giving– it takes a school of fish to make the biggest movements!

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

Psst, hey there! Thanks for reading today's issue. Listen up, I'm sure you've heard this phrase in someway or another before: "Being a furry is an expensive hobby" I know, I know, it's a classic– and it's true! But while some of those gosh-dang fursuits might be just out of reach for now… or forever, giving doesn't have to be! In fact, right now, you can go donate to a fundraiser created by one of our lovely heads-of-staff, Carkas!

He's currently running a GoFundMe to raise money for BatterSea Dogs Home, an animal welfare organization, and Guide Dogs, which trains dogs to help the blind. And I mean literally running; he'll be participating in a wolfrun – a 10 kilometer obstacle course sort-of deal. So if his GoFundMe description wasn't cute enough, and if a WOLFrun wasn't cool enough, just know he'll be falling in the mud a few (or more) times– definitely worth donating for! Thanks for tuning into FOTW this week, keep on reading for some more great articles and we'll catch you in the next one!

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

We’re always on the lookout for candidates to feature for their amazing contributions to the community. If you have any questions about this segment or would like to send us a recommendation for a future candidate, feel free to contact Fizzy, Danielle, or feel free to say hello to me, Rizou.

ART CORNER

How’s it going everyone? This is Yeshua once again and I’m happy to be able to bring you another edition of Furry Weekly’s Art Corner! If you enjoy the art the fandom has to offer, then stick around!

Before we get into it though, I want to remind you all that we’re still looking for a permanent host for this segment. That means we’re looking for someone who is interested in writing it every week, so if you not only enjoy seeing furry art, but also maybe writing about it, this could be for you! Just hit me up if you’re interested in hosting Art Corner!

Now, let’s not waste more time and see what we’ve got today!

Radiokit is first with a splendid headshot!

Fluffy pink and white dragon with maw open and tongue out looks toward the right, its head and neck covering most of the canvas space.

What a stunning style! Starting off with the lineart, I have to mention how clean and precise it looks! It helps define much of the character’s features in a sleek way; the fur, hair, chin, and other parts are all quite pointy which makes for a very eye-catching piece. The fur looks soft and decently fluffy, the hair looks stunning, and other parts like the eyeliner look straight-up stylish thanks in part to the excellent lineart.

The colorwork is the other main element I want to highlight because no doubt does it stand out! Overall, the coloring is smooth and boasts astonishing depth which, along with wonderful lighting effects, give the character a pretty cool glowing effect. The tips of the hair and the left eye best show this look! And I’d be remiss if I didn’t at least call attention to the anatomy; look at that snout, tongue and teeth! Radiokit absolutely nailed these classic features of a dragon along with the overall anthro look, even as just a headshot! There’s quite a bit more I could say but I’ll leave it there and just encourage you all to take a moment to really take in the piece because it’s incredibly pleasing to the eye! Keep making astonishing art, Radiokit!

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

Now we have Dream-Mausoleum bringing a delightful full body piece!

A brown feline wearing an orange and blue open jacket and a blue and orange necklace appears reclined against a muted blue background.

What a great way to depict this handsome lad! He looks very relaxed as it looks like he’s leaning back a bit with one leg stretched out and one bent just a bit. The artist did a phenomenal job with the pose along with the character’s expression, both being relatively simple but still displaying so much life and personality! You can tell this is a pretty friendly feline who’s probably laid back. And the jacket and necklace both fit the character so well! I’ll go out on a limb and say that was probably the commissioner’s choice since this is a commission. If that’s the case, then awesome job to the artist for making those articles of clothing look so good, and if it happens to be that the artist chose that attire, then especially good job! I’m a big fan of how you portray characters through their poses and expressions!

Speaking of things I’m a big fan of with this artist… look at the colorwork! I feel like I’ve seen this style of coloring before where it’s pretty smooth, but if you look closely where different sections of color end, you can see some tiny bits of color that overlap, and they almost look like tiny splashes of paint. Again, I’m not too sure what this style of coloring is called, but it’s very aesthetically pleasing and the artist made it look phenomenal. Good stuff, this piece was an absolute joy to see!

With that, I’ll throw it over to Dozu, our co-host for the segment!

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

Hi everyone! Dozu here now to bring you two more amazing pieces! Let’s take a look!

Wysdrem is going next with a gorgeous Patreon subscriber prize!

Digital art of a female corvid character holding wisps of orange light

This piece is beautiful, especially the brush used! The pose is also stunning and it really showcases the character very well. The dark colors of both the character and the background are a great contrast with the shiny wisps of light she’s holding. The light highlights bring this piece together nicely, adding the perfect touch of light to an otherwise very dark piece.

The feathers are another detail to highlight, they are very well drawn and give this corvid the appearance of being very very fluffy! Also, those wings, while cartoony, retain a good semblance of proper anatomy with the two layers of feathers.

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

Feve follows with a snarling headshot!

Digital art of a blue and white canine snarling to the side

To start, the colors on this piece are simple but very pretty! especially the purply-blue of the eyes. The sketchy lines make the piece so dynamic and almost look animated, great job there! The next point I would like to cover is the expression – the major focal point of this piece. It is an amazingly done expression that involves the whole face, not just the mouth area:

The snarl is epic and the teeth are so well drawn; the gums showing give it that extra level of anger that makes the piece so good; the shape of the eyes being more triangular also helps give this character an angry look. Lastly, the spikes of fur give this character a very fluffy look which is very much appreciated!

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

That will do it for today’s edition of Art Corner! Thanks for checking it out and please, if you liked what you saw, go give the artists some love and give them a follow if you want to see more!

WRITING SHOWCASE

Hello, everybody! My name is Dozu, and I have for you today a story about Warrior Cats and prophecies!

⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰

Title saying Warriors of the Plants by CloudyMilku on Toyhouse.

Warriors of the Plants

By CloudyMilku

Summary: Harveststar, leader of FlowerClan, has a strange prophecy about “dens of stone” and “cats of strange,” but just what does all of that mean? She decides to visit Springfern, the clan’s atypical medicine cat, to get some clarity on her vision, only for her, the medicine cat and her apprentice to set out on a journey to speak with the other Clans.

Highlights: This story is very nicely separated in paragraphs, reading it is easy and it flows like the rain in the story. The speech is nicely highlighted with quotations to separate it from the rest of the text which isn't always the case in these stories so it’s nice to see. Good job guys!

For improvement: There were some words missing or misspelled here and there but nothing that impedes the reading flow. Other than that not much else to say in this section.

Question time! Answer in a post and tag @FurryWeekly and @DoggyDozu if it’s on Twitter!

  • Has your home ever flooded due to rain?

  • Do you read Warrior Cats books?

⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰

That will be all for today folks. I hope you have enjoyed my pick!

Let’s give our authors a round of applause for their hard work! Remember to include the tags #FurryWeekly and #WritingShowcase in your posts if you want us to see your own writing on any platform! See you all next time, and now I'll sashay away.

WRITING 101

Sunlight streams through a pixelly window, casting its warm glow on the royal purple carpet spread out on the plank floor. Even tiny specks of dust, no more than a nearly-transparent pixel, float lazily through the air. Deep and rich oak scents saturate the air, as does the coziness of many bookshelves towering several stories tall. The Camera, constructed as a handful of gray-and-black voxels in this Minecraft world, observes the stunning library while a tall hawk of similar simplicity surfs the books around them.

“Enchantments for boots… enchantments for boots....” Tad murmurs to himself. “Where might you be…?”

His feathered fingers glide across spine after leather spine. He strolls around, looking the bookcases up and down. His extremely sharp vision grants him freedom from the ladder reaching up to the top bookcases, but even after scanning what must have been hundreds of books, he hasn’t found what he’s after.

“Ah well… I’m sure it’ll pop out at some point.”

He heads for one of the blocky armchairs and plants his keister firmly into the cushion. Like a man twice his age, a huge sigh escapes his beak and he lets his head sink backwards. Two minutes like this would guarantee a sleeping hawk.

The Camera whizzes to get Tad’s attention as well as keep him awake. His fluttering eyelids snap back open.

“Eh? Oh… I do have some writing to go over for this week....”

He shakes his head and sits upright.

“Okay… now where were we?”

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

Hello friends, and welcome to Furry Weekly’s Writing 101! I’m Bryce Griffin, here to get all you writers out there the inside scoop on literature tips and tricks. Let’s get started!

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

Title saying The Adjective Clause.

Let’s continue our discussions about clauses. Last week, we covered the noun clause—a dependent clause whose entirety functions as a noun in a sentence. This week’s topic will follow the trend of dependent clauses serving different functions depending on its diction and location in the sentence. Please welcome… the adjective clause!

An adjective clause is a dependent clause that modifies a noun within the sentence’s independent clause.

An adjective clause is a good way to better describe what is going on in the sentence. It adds detail in a compact space, which can help paint a more vivid picture in your reader’s mind. For example:

“This lens makes your photos stunning.”

By all means, this example sentence is grammatically correct. However, it lacks some extra “punch” that will elevate our mental image of the aforementioned camera lens. How can we add extra detail? An adjective clause that modifies the noun “lens” will help!

“This lens that is designed especially for landscape compositions makes your photos stunning.”

See how we changed the tone of the sentence with the new adjective clause? We modified “lens” to help describe how it makes your photos stunning. Rather than leaving the reader guessing as to why this lens is so good, we now explain the lens’ purpose as well as hint at the sentence’s deeper context. Is somebody at a camera shop, looking to upgrade their gear? Maybe they’re a beginner getting roped into a kit that they don’t need at the moment.

Because people are nouns in a sentence, you can also use an adjective clause to describe individuals or groups. Here’s another example:

“That person used to work with me.”

Let’s add our adjective clause:

“That person, who gives everyone a shifty gaze, used to work with me.”

Whatever the case, the adjective clause adds strong detail in a neat, concise package. Just remember: you can easily get carried away adding too much detail to the clause and muddy up your syntax. Understand what you’re really trying to say and make sure that an adjective clause is a good way to get there.

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

“‘That should be it, right? We’re just continuing our discussions about—”

Tad cuts himself off. His eyes narrow as they fixate on a particular book in the opposite bookcase.

“‘Advanced Techniques and Mechanics of Lower Body Armor…” he mutters to himself, turning his head slightly, “Including… Legwear… and Footwear!’ Aha!”

He springs up and swipes the book off the shelf. He quickly rifles through the pages, a wide smile plastered over his beak.

“Yes! This is exactly what I needed.”

In a flash, the hawk pulls out a stunning, shining pair of bright teal boots. The boots shine like freshly-polished metal yet glisten as clear and bright as gems. He stands over a lectern hosting another book; however, this thick tome floats in mid-air, suspended by nothing but what seems to be energy provided by the sheer volume of knowledge in the library. The pages seem to rustle and flip by themselves.

The Camera, lens dilated in sheer amazement, squeaks out a quizzical chirrup, clearly asking, “How did you even get all of this stuff?”

Tad looks up at the non-verbal query.

“Is this—? Oh, of course not! None of this is mine! I didn’t have a hand in anything here—my friends made this whole house!”

FURSUIT FOCUS

Hey everyone! This is Yeshua, filling in for tahlmorra this week. I’m excited to come back to write a Fursuit Focus segment (I know it says ‘Fanatics’ on the cover, that’s on me) because this is genuinely one of my favorite parts of the magazine! But anyway, let’s not waste any time and check out today’s featured fursuiter!

Hopping his way in today is Zero!

It’s not very common to see kangaroos roaming around conventions and meets and such, so coming across Zero is sure to be a pleasant surprise for anyone who sees him! That was definitely the case for me! Made by WildFoxWorks, Zero’s design is definitely one that you can see once or twice and easily recognize thereafter; he’s got mostly gray fur that’s complemented nicely by the blue on his paws, hair, ears and other parts of his body. The pink on his ears is also a good touch when it comes to the colors! Of course, the long, thick tail and somewhat long ears are classic kangaroo features that also look great, but as you may have noticed, Zero’s feet paws are probably what stand out the most for this roo. More on that in a bit, but no doubt this is a phenomenal character that’s likely to put a smile on people’s faces! The design looks fantastic and of course, major props to the maker for bringing him to life! But what does this roo get up to?

Zero enjoys suiting at conventions and in groups the most. As he puts it, “fursuiting is best enjoyed with other friends,” which is something I’m sure a lot of folks agree with! Interacting with other fursuiters, making content with friends, and taking tons of photos are some of Zero’s favorite activities while he’s running around as a big kangaroo. As I mentioned earlier, perhaps the most notable feature of his suit are his huge stompers, which make for some… interesting… but funny requests as Zero tells me. Somewhat unsurprisingly, he gets tons of requests for photos where he steps on others! Zero fully embraced this too, as he should, to be honest, saying he does find it hilarious when people ask for it, and also noting that he enjoys how creative people are when they try to get photos with his big paws. If you take a look at Zero’s socials, you’re in for quite a bit of paw content which – although it may sound a little odd to some, is actually pretty amusing and fun to see! Zero himself is pretty clever with what he posts too; one of my favorite photos I saw from him shows him laying in bed with a close-up of his paws, and the caption reads, “the absolute chokehold these have on some of y’all (literally and metaphorically).” Not gonna lie, that made me laugh!

Stepping away from Zero’s paws (see what I did there?), he also enjoys suiting outside of conventions. He’s gone ice skating, bowling, and mini golfing, all of which sound like a ton of fun! Back in the fandom, he also likes to help others with fursuit photoshoots. Zero says he and his friends have been to cities, gardens, and even some art exhibits! As for himself, he also makes content on TikTok. Zero likes to make content similar to that of other content creators, but, as you might expect, he tries to put a twist on that content to incorporate jokes about having massive paws. I’m sure there’s a good bit of folks out there who really enjoy that! At the end of the day though, Zero says he just wants to entertain others with his content, so you can no doubt expect a lot of fun photos and videos when you have a look at his socials.

Quite appropriately, Zero says content creation is the most appealing part about fursuiting for him right now! He loves to interact and collab with other fursuiters as well as watch their own content. While making content of his own is fun, Zero does say doing so with others is even more fun! As for fursuiting in general, Zero says he enjoys the feeling it gives him, letting him be more expressive than usual which I don’t doubt helps with just letting loose and having a good time! It’s safe to say Zero is relishing being an avid fursuiter, having had the chance to learn more about himself and others! He’s especially thankful for his friends, which he says are the source for a lot of the fun he’s had while fursuiting as well as the inspiration for making content! Doesn’t seem like Zero’s gonna stop any time soon either, as he says he’s already looking forward to his next suit and character!

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

That’s it for today’s edition of Fursuit Focus! Hope you all enjoyed getting to know Zero and getting a look at his shenanigans! I definitely recommend following him if you want a nice dose of silly and wholesome content, although mostly silly!

We’re always looking for other fursuiters to feature here, so if you would like to show up here or know of a fursuiter you’d like for us to chat with, just use the tags #fursuitfocus and #furryweekly when you post videos or pics on social media! Or you can contact me directly or contact our usual host, tahlmorra!

I may or may not be back next week, but either way, please take care, and until next time!

PHOTOGRAPHY 101

Hello, friends and photografurs! Welcome back to this week's Photography 101! I'm your host, Jaden (Discord @ Jaden711#0663). In the last issue we talked about the basics of ISO, so in this issue, we’ll be talking about the basics of shutter speed!

Shutter speed

The shutter or “curtain” of your camera covers the sensor of your camera and prevents light from touching it. Whenever you hit your shutter button, this shutter is opened and allows light to hit the sensor. How long light is allowed to hit the sensor (or film if you’re using a film camera) is determined by your shutter speed.

Your shutter speed will be represented in seconds. Any number represented with a slash (1/4, 1/4000, etc.) refers to a fraction of a second, so 1/4000 means light will hit your camera for four thousandth of a second. Any shutter speed represented with a quotation (1”, 30” etc) means a whole second, so a value of 8” means light will hit the sensor for 8 seconds and would be slower than a value of 1/8.

But what does shutter speed do? As we mentioned before, shutter speed refers to how long the shutter remains open and allows light to hit the sensor, which is useful to either freeze fast-moving objects or create a motion blur.

A car parked on the side of the road at night time with a red streak caused by the motion blur of a car driving past it.
Example of using a slow shutter speed to capture motion blur.

Timing your shutter speed is one of the most important things in photography. Thankfully, this is automatically done for you in most shooting modes such as macro, night, and portrait mode; but, if you're shooting in manual or shutter priority, you'll need to adjust the shutter speed yourself.

Ensuring proper shutter speed is important in a few ways:

  • As we mentioned in our issue on ISO, the sensor captures all of the light from the lens when the shutter is open, so anything in motion will be captured from the time you take the photo until the time the photo is done being captured. This is why it's important to use a fast shutter speed to freeze a moving object or to avoid camera shake.
  • If your shutter speed is too slow and your ISO is high, then your photo could be too bright.
  • If your shutter speed is too fast and your ISO is too low, then your photo could be too dark.
A blurry photo of a green countryside.
Example of a blurry photo caused by using too low of a shutter speed in a moving car.

To master shutter speed, use these small tips:

  • Start with a fast shutter speed, around 1/15 - 1/60 to prevent camera shake. If your photo is too dark try increasing your ISO first and if it's too bright try decreasing your ISO before adjusting your ISO.
  • If you're getting camera shake, increase your shutter speed.
  • If you want to freeze a moving object, increase your shutter speed.
  • If you want to capture motion blur, decrease your shutter speed.
  • If your ISO is maxed and your photo is still too dark then increase your shutter speed, but be careful as this can create camera shake if you don't have access to a tripod.
  • If your ISO is as low as possible and your photo is still too bright, then increase your shutter speed.
A close up of the backside of a white car.
Example of using shutter speed to increase the brightness of a photo after the ISO was maxed out.

Shutter speed can be an amazing tool for doing some very creative things with motion blur and freezing a moving subject; but, if you're not careful, it can also be something that ruins what could've been a perfect photograph. If you're new to photography, I'd recommend using the automatic modes for your more important “once-in-a-lifetime shots” and pay attention to how your camera changes its settings to match different shooting conditions and using less important photos for practising your shutter speeds and using what your learned from viewing that data.

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

That concludes this week's segment! If you have any questions or would like to share your photos, don't be afraid to shoot me (Discord @ Jaden711#0663) a message!

CHARACTER INTERVIEW

How’s it going, everyone? This is Yeshua and I’m finally back with another interview to share! Before we get started, I just want to mention that I’m always on the lookout for folks to sit down with and talk about their involvement in the fandom, so if you’ve got any suggestions, just hit me up and lemmino!

That said, let’s jump straight into the interview!

YESHUA: Today I'm very excited to be joined by V, an incredibly talented creator in the fandom! Thanks so much for taking some time to chat! For anyone reading about you for the first time, mind telling us a bit about you and what you do in the fandom?

V: Hello! Thank you for speaking with me. I'm V and I create apparel for the furry community under V-Art. I've also done commission based furry artwork and graphic design as well on the side since '08.

YESHUA: Lots of folks know you for your apparel, and for good reason! I do have some specific questions about the work you do with that, and I would also like to talk about your graphic design work later; but before we get into very specific details, can you give me a general idea of what you make and any item or items you might be focusing on at the moment?

V: So right now we're focusing on the Wolf Paw shoes which are almost finished, the finishing touches are being finalised now. These would be the shoe box, the logos, text and thermal sticker label for SKU organisation. Inner label tags, garment shoe bags and their printed design. It's essentially making sure the time sensitive stuff is done first and then all this little stuff can be done on the side. This excludes any admin work with my team in the background.

Collage of V’s wolf paw shoes.

Other items right now... Varsity jacket, A/W Woof hat, Awoo Cru x V-Art Anorak Jacket, T-Shirts, etc., FMC Shirts, FMC Jackets, Home Furniture signs, Deer Beanies, New Wolf Paw: V1 colourways and some other stuff I can't remember haha...

YESHUA: Yes! The Wolf Paw shoes! I've been seeing your progress on them pop up on social media for some time now and I'm very excited to get to talk about them with you. It sounds like this is quite the complex project if you're working on details like the shoe box, label tags and all these other things! And I absolutely want to talk about some of the other items you mentioned, but first, tell me about the design for the Wolf Paw shoes. To me, it looks like a design that's not overly-flashy but boasts some subtle 'furry' elements that really make it stand out! How was it developing the design and why did you design it the way you did?

V: When I was growing up it was rare to see or get high top trainers. The majority of my stuff were Adidas Sambas or basic Petroleum shoes from Sports Direct, then in came the Nikes Air Max and stuff. To be honest, they never appealed to me, but then all of a sudden Adidas came out with some Adidas AR 2.0s and C-10s and my goddamn soul set on fire.

The silhouette for the AR 2.0s were incredible to me and usage of colour. When it came to making mine, I wanted to create the mid/high top silhouette but keep it clean and future proof with focus on the materials as a throwback to those shoes that inspired me. This has always been what V-Art is about, clothing that complements peoples fursonas like as if they were a character from a film. You know their alter ego is a tiger because they're always wearing orange or stripey stuff... Therian wise, I just thought it helps them keep the fandom with them when we're so far away from cons and stuff. I just wanted to make sure people weren't blowing their money on furry gear they could only wear at cons and not feel comfortable in the streets.

The Wolf Paw shoes themselves have a lot of thought behind them. They'll be our template for future iterations and leave room to grow such as phantom paw pad insoles, modular ankle straps and then experimenting with different fabrics and maybe inviting some artists to collab with someday. With the budget we've had, it's actually really nice to know I could get them done with the support from the community... It's been crazy.

YESHUA: I can definitely see the inspiration from the AR 2.0s! And the thought about making furry apparel that people can comfortably wear anywhere is honestly something that I think more folks in the fandom do want, but don’t talk about a whole lot. I personally will wear furry stuff anywhere, but having more subtle and stylish options is seriously appealing as well!

You say there was a lot of thought put behind the Wolf Paw shoes and you explained how you could build off of its current version in the future, but is there anything else about their design that you also spent a lot of time on? Or anything that you're particularly proud of about the design?

V: I'm proud that I managed to create a version of a problem in my head I wanted to solve regarding getting the shoes on quickly. Usually I've got my trainers, and I'll put them on without doing the laces and always thought to myself, "I wish they did a slip-on version without the laces," because I hardly ever used them after breaking the shoe in.

This is why when I was designing it I was drawing the laces, detailing them, and adding the eyelets... then just got rid of them. I had slip on shoes for school and realised it could be done somehow or it would be worth giving it a go – not knowing that it honestly created a bolder look to the shoe.

Close up of the front part of the wolf paw shoes, showing the straps.

I'm enjoying them because I can get the shoe on quickly, and then with the optional ankle strap it just helps get them on for a casual look. Then with the inner pocket you can carry and re-attach the strap if need be. Besides the magnetic buckle that's probably my main feature I'm happy with, it also helps people with disabilities get them on and off.

YESHUA: You know, that's a very interesting thought! I'm the same way personally, I just slip on my shoes without even touching the laces. So not only did you solve a problem you experienced, I'm sure it will be a problem solved for others as well! And -- you even went a step further and added a little more with the optional ankle strap and inner pocket! All good stuff! So we're at the end of August right now and you mentioned the Wolf Paw shoes are almost done, but I believe people can pre-order them now?

V: Yep! We're ahead of schedule, but the final ETA is still set for Jan '24 for customer delivery. So without any problems we should be hitting that or earlier, and with this being the biggest project I've ever done all my efforts will be focused on this.

You can pre-order from my website: WerewolvesRule.com and we still have plenty left but some sizes are now sold out so if you'd like to pre-order please be quick!

YESHUA: Still a bit of a wait but definitely will be worth it! You say this is the biggest project you've done, and earlier you mentioned you were able to get it done thanks in part to support from the community. Is it safe to say this has been your most popular, or at least most anticipated item yet?

V: Hell yeah! I think the shoes have grown outside of the fandom and got some normies interested in what we've got to offer. So I'm happy people are enthusiastic to see how they turn out. It helps me keep motivated at times when things drag on whilst working on them.

YESHUA: Oh wow, getting attention even outside the fandom? That's incredible! It's not hard to tell how much love and effort you've put into this project, so I can only wish you the best in seeing it through all the way to when the shoes are shipped! Before moving onto your other projects, I did have one more thing to ask that I think is somewhat related to the shoes. You mentioned the New Wolf Paw V1, and I believe I've seen on your socials mentioning something about Wolf Paws V1 mockups. Is that indeed related to the Wolf Paw shoes? What can you tell us about this?

V: Yeah they're very related! So we've started to play around with some colour schemes for the future. People have expressed wanting colours, so going into Photoshop I've mocked up some ideas with the existing shoe and sent them to Twitter for review. It seems people really like the idea of the purple, red and white shoes being made someday.

Collage of recolors of the wolf paw shoes.

In the future it would be nice to try some different fabric dyeing techniques and obscure materials. This is my fanboy coming out for Stone Island, but they did a collaboration with Adidas back in the day which had a similar technique I'd love to try. Just trying to keep the shoe interesting and interactive for everyone is the goal, not just a different colour but a unique experience.

YESHUA: Oh heck yeah! That sounds very cool! It's also very interesting seeing someone who is such an avid follower of apparel brands and even as far as the techniques some brands use for their designs; haven't met someone like that in the fandom! Still, as you work on those variations of the shoe, it will be interesting keeping an eye on how that develops. Perhaps we might be able to do a follow up on that down the line! But anyway, think we've covered the Paw Shoes pretty well? Anything else you might want to share about them before we switch topics just a tad?

V: Nope! Just hope everyone enjoys them, and they exceed expectations. Hopefully in the future if we have enough resources we can offer more and give the fandom even more exciting products. Including more variations and accessories.

YESHUA: I certainly wish you the absolute best with this venture; this is one of the coolest and most professional projects I've seen in the fandom, and I can definitely see it continue to keep the interest of folks in the community!

Moving on, I do want to ask about some of your other apparel and items! You've mentioned jackets, hats, t-shirts, and more! Tell me, how has it been coming up with ideas for these clothes and ultimately bringing them to life as items you offer? Are there any particular items you're especially happy with, or that you especially like?

V: I definitely like the Full Moon Club shirts so far because they offer a unique aspect which a lot of manufacturers we've worked with were confused about at first and couldn't understand how to make or they'd never seen something like it before. Which is the claw rip on the back which is a process called "reverse applique."

Collage of the Full Moon Club shirts, showing the ‘claw ripped’ back as well as the button-up design of the front.

Since the very first iteration you can really compare all the different ones to see how we've sourced better material, construction of it overall and the types of stitching. Then it transpired into the denim jackets which was really awesome. It helps add some edgy Werewolfiness to your wardrobe which isn't too over the top furry and I think a lot of people can enjoy it. I'm looking forward to having fun with it more and experimenting once again as it's become a staple of the V-Art store.

Also, it reminds me of being at one of my best friends Tiro's apartment at the time. Can still remember drawing the idea on a sticky note and looking at it thinking... “Holy shit that's actually a clever idea. I wonder if it would work.” Then boom, the very first sample arrived at his apartment and that went semi-viral which was crazy for me at the time.

Sticky note sketch of the Full Moon Club shirts.

When it comes to creating clothing ideas it varies with the initial concept. Sometimes I need to do other things whilst my mind works in the background, this could be anywhere from driving, making a cup of tea, rolling an L, sleeping, showering, etc. So I always try to write everything down even if it's not an idea I'm excited about because it could just do with tweaking or it could be something that's not come across my spectrum yet. For instance, the home sign where it says "14 Werewolves Fucking Me At The Back Of Waffle House." I've wanted to do something for that slogan but nobody would wanna wear that on a t-shirt obviously, then... I realised it'd be more fitting as a sign for peoples home or maybe the bedroom.

YESHUA: Wow, it really sounds like you really push your creativity and ideas! That reverse applique approach is definitely something I can't say I've seen before, and I agree, it doesn't feel overly 'furry' and has that werewolf factor that tons of furries are fond of. What blows my mind though is that the idea essentially started as a sticky note drawing! That's insane!

It's also very interesting hearing your process for developing ideas and how you move them forward. Always writing stuff down is honestly something a lot of people who create would probably benefit from.

Aside from the Wolf Paw shoes, I believe I saw the Deer Beanies on your socials as another upcoming item? Is this correct? And if so, what can you share about ‘em?

V: Hehe yeah, I'd always advise people to write stuff down. You never know when you might have a slow day and you can go back to finish some ideas off you've had then think of new ones whilst doing them. Also writing down what you need to do on the day and striking them off one by one helps a lot.

The Deer Beanies are making a return! Hopefully some of the other beanie designs too once I get a chance to make some more ear drawings and get the tech packs updated. Time flies!

Collage of deer beanie showing antlers on its sides.

This time I'm trying to push the quality further and create them with a 90% Cotton / 10% Cashmere blend. Rear plastic injected 3D V-Art logo tag which could transcend to the other hats too which will be nice to match, we'll see. Then the top of the beanie I'm trying to see if we can do this sort of smoother knitted finish so it's not a hard stitch line like we have now.

I've not had time to try and sample some ideas out like making the side ear embroidered designs jacquard which is a shame, but it's a problem I'm trying to solve. Some species have very big designs and it limits the stretch of the beanie, also trying to think of a new design for rabbits and their longer ears hehe.

YESHUA: Oh the Deer Beanies are a returning item, huh? Sounds like you've got some great ideas to really elevate them; I think the knitted finish is an especially good choice! As for the ear designs, it's gonna be real interesting seeing how they turn out because no doubt, they'll be the highlight of these 'deer' beanies, hahah. I love deer, so you've already got me interested!

Before we switch topics again, is there anything else about the work you do with your apparel items that you'd like to share at all? Any sneak peeks perhaps at anything you might be able and willing to share? No pressure of course, but I had to ask! Heh.

V: Nothing yet! Just waiting on some things to be finished such as the Werewolf Hot Sauce varsity jacket which could be fun. Will be my first time doing a varsity jacket with the leather on the body and wool on the sleeves. I hope it'll better support the huge embroidered chenille patch on the back.

YESHUA: Werewolf Hot Sauce varsity jacket? Wow, this sounds like a really cool project! Just too many things to keep tabs on from you!

As we get ready to wrap things up, I'm also curious about your general involvement in the fandom! How'd you get started in the community, what has your experience been like outside of running your shop, and what other stuff do you get up to?

V: Sure thing! This covers quite a few things but I'll try and keep it brief. I got into the fandom through Transfur looking up TF artwork after I saw the front cover of an Island of Dr. Moreau DVD in HMV, from then on it got me onto FA (FurAffinity) and UKFur forums. I've been into graphic design, with nightclub posters dotted around my town so wanted to give it a go with a cracked copy of CS2 I got off a friend in school. All this was going on when I was like 14 (2006), and then managed to get a Trust pen tablet to start practicing my illustration artwork and graphic design on the PC.

From then on I started to make an FA profile to upload my sketches and anything else I was trying, even DJ clips. UK Fur forums had a signature section for your posts to add like a banner so would always be updating that with themes and what not. Then when I was 16 (2008) I started creating clothing ideas, usually heavily font based because I just loved typography at that point.

I could keep on going forever with the side projects I've done in the fandom but it would derail this whole thread haha. Done a lot of things!

Outside of running the shop are general miscellaneous things I've got to get on with. Looking after family members with Alzheimer's, running around doing odd jobs, trying to figure out a way to get my own place. Planning what's next for V-Art, taking care of C-Service and planning ahead into the future with everything. My days are getting rammed but it's nice to get things done, I'd rather be busy to be honest... not a lot of people plan fun stuff to do.

Other stuff I do right now is primarily getting into some voice acting and hopefully screen acting at some point. I've done classes in the past and whilst applying for auditions I'm keeping busy with being an SA (Supporting Artist). I've had some featured walk-on roles for shows that have come out on D+, including some stuff that's not been released yet for Netflix and Paramount+... but if you see me, you see me. I've been lucky to be honest. Met some well known people but the 4-6am call times and driving 4 hours to get to set is crazy at times.

YESHUA: Ah, I'm noticing a pattern when it comes to what you like.. I love that you incorporated your TF interest into your brand as well like naming your site 'werewolvesrule.com' hahah. It's always fascinating to hear how a simple interest leads folks to doing really big things, in your case, pursuing graphic design just from seeing posters around town, and combining it with your love for typography later on!

And it definitely sounds like your days are packed which makes me even more grateful for you taking the time to share some of your work with us! And on top of all of that, you've also gotten yourself into screen acting?? Holy heck, you've got a lot going for ya!

V: Yep! It's getting chaotic, but hopefully I can keep everything organised. It's honestly a labour of love. Gotta be back in London tomorrow because I'm back on set for two days haha.

YESHUA: I definitely wish you the best with it all! I gotta say, I'm truly impressed and honestly kinda inspired seeing all you've done and are still doing!

I am also curious, speaking strictly about the furry fandom, do you take part in other things inside the community? Do you go to conventions or events? Maybe just hang out with friends? Or is your involvement in the fandom more centered on what you do on V-Art?

V: I do go to furmeets and conventions in the UK! I'm mainly hanging out with friends at Manchester or London furmeets, Confuzzled and Scotiacon, usually in Dealers Den running V-Art. Gonna try Furcation and Megaplex this year which should be nice... Been to MFF, TFF and Great Furscape, Frantic Eufuria when they were going on too.

I'm a part of the community through and through, done graphic design work for cons regarding logo work and merchandise domestic and overseas. Hope that answers your question!

YESHUA: Heck yeah! Great to hear you do have time to chill and have fun with friends in the fandom, because after all that's usually one of the main reasons for being part of it in the first place! Hope the vending goes well too, sounds like it takes a lot of planning!

Well, it's been such a good time chatting and getting to know more about such a talented person creating seriously cool stuff for the community, so thank you so much for giving us an inside look at what you do! Before we go, got any final remarks? Any parting comments at all for anyone reading?

V: My pleasure, it's been nice talking with you.

If you've not checked out my website yet it's WerewolvesRule.com stay tuned for more products as we start to grow it out more, and hopefully one day deal in person at a USA con!

YESHUA: Y'all heard it here! And I'd like to reiterate the part about staying tuned because as you all just read, there's tons to keep an eye on from V-Art! Thanks again for your time, V!
