ISSUE 273
Hi all! Welcome back to another edition of Furry Weekly! Before we get started, we do have our usual announcements, but we also want to apologize for not being able to publish last weekend (Aug. 19-20) as well as for the shorter issue this week. As odd as it may sound, we’re actually a bit understaffed, so when our writers can’t do their segments, it’s a little hard for us to cover for them.
That’s why we’d like to once again call your attention to the “Recruiting” section below. Remember that Furry Weekly is essentially a passion project, so we’re always looking for folks who just want to do something for the community and help out with this operation. If you’re interested in getting involved in the fandom, we ask you to consider joining us! If we have more help in writing our segments, we can do better in bringing you near-full issues every week, but we’re also looking for help in making the project better in general.
So again, please check out the Recruiting section directly below, and consider becoming part of the FW team! Apologies for the longer intro, we just want to be completely transparent about what’s going on with us and how that’s impacting our content. If you’ve read all this, we do appreciate it!
Now, let’s get on with the announcements and then with today’s issue! As always, let us know on our social media what you liked the most from today’s content. We’re @FurryWeekly on both Twitter and Instagram!

ART CORNER
Hey everyone, Yeshua here with another Art Corner segment! Before starting, I want to remind you all that we’re still looking for someone to host this segment, which means writing it! If you enjoy the art the fandom has to offer, and perhaps you do write about it or maybe want to give it a shot, this could be for you! If you’re interested in hosting this segment, just contact me on one of my socials!
Let’s start now!
Springdragon is first today bringing a stunning watercolor piece!
Traditional art is always a treat to see and the watercolor medium just doesn’t show up too often these days! I’m not terribly familiar with painting techniques but I can definitely say that there’s excellent depth throughout the piece. Something I particularly enjoy is the different ways the character’s fur looks. Some areas, like the gray and white right below the eyes, have less paint strokes which makes for a smoother texture. Yet, most of the rest of the fur shows a good amount of strokes, especially the neck area, and the hair also shows this. On the neck, white strokes help create depth and make the fur strands stand out, while on the hair, the different shades of red along with the black and white look excellent!
The other aspect of the fur’s texture are the more subtle strokes – especially on the inside part of the ear and most parts of the fur around the eyes. These minimal strokes of paint also add great depth that also gives the appearance of fur strands, but not as pronounced as the fur on the neck. I know I focused mostly on the texture of the piece, and I think it goes without saying that the color work is remarkable. I’ve mentioned the different use of colors on some of the strokes, which come together nicely to make a stunning realistic art piece. Thanks for sharing this, Springdragon! Your work is an absolute delight to see!
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
Vintagecoyote follows through with a phenomenal full body!
The color work in this piece is simply fantastic! The coloring is solid – literally and figuratively – boasting some very subtle color depth along with great shading and highlights that really enhance it. You can see the color depth on the tail, arms, wings and more, which seem to give the effect of ‘lighting’ up the character’s body given all the fire around him. The shading’s best seen on the belly and tail scales although it’s scattered throughout as well. Finally, the highlights stand out the most on the hair and tail fluff. All of these elements come together to make a piece that’s incredibly pleasing to the eye; the colors complement each other well and the effects elevate the look of those colors as well.
I also want to talk a little bit about the overall style. Leaning toward the toony side, the lineart is precise, and along with the minimal detailing and solid coloring, it’s a pretty eye-catching style. The anatomy is excellent too with well-defined anthro features, and the pose and expression are awesome! Gotta love that fierce look of the eye, tongue out, and smoke? I think? Coming out of the nose. Either way, this is a great look for a dragon. This is a very colorful and lively piece that I had a lot of fun writing about. Keep at it, Vintagecoyote!
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
Closing us off today is Berubeswagos and his breathtaking headshot!
We started with a traditional painting and we’re ending with a digital painting as berubeswagos shows us just how good the other end of the spectrum is! Most of the piece has stellar color depth that helps the fur look soft and fluffy! The chest best shows this as you can see the different shades of gray as well as more noticeable brush lines. Then there are the shoulders and cheeks both boasting subtle detailing that make the fur look soft, almost makes you wanna pet this cute feline! Just me? Either way, just one more note about the color work: I like how the neck and lower parts of the snout look darker, while the upper part of the face and the chest look lighter. I think this was a great choice given the colorful environment the character is in, showing that while there is a lot of light around, the setting itself is still generally dark as it appears to be nighttime. I know I said one more note, but one final thing I’d like to add about the color is that the blue outline on the right side of the character’s face along with the very subtle pink and orange on his left cheek are both tiny, but superb details that also show how the environment lights up the character.
Something else I think is worth highlighting is how good the artist does with expressions. Just look at this boy! His eyes are wide open, he’s got an adorable smile, and his ears are lowered just a bit as if he had just been complimented or something! If you look at berubeswagos’ other work, you’ll notice he’s really good at making characters look friendly and full of life. If you’re a fan of artwork like this, you’ll probably like what he posts! I could write so much more about this artist’s work, but I’m sure you all can see how good it is! Thanks for letting me share your art, huge pleasure!
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
And just like that, another Art Corner segment is done. Thank you all for joining me for it. I hope you all liked what you saw as much as I did! Maybe you’ve found an artist or two – or three – to follow!
I’m doing my best to keep up with the segment while we look for another host, so if you want to see your artwork featured here, just use the tags #furryweekly and #artcorner when you post on social media, or reach out to me directly to show me your work!
I hope to see you all next time, but until then, take care!

WRITING SHOWCASE
Hello, everybody! My name is Dozu, and I have for you today a story about peaches and violence!
⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰
Golden Fields
By crime
Summary: Calabvca is a young elk on his way to a new life. He bought a peach farm from a very rich friend of his, and took up the mantle of peach farmer. 5 years pass on the peach farm, yet his peaches still taste terrible- so Calabvca decides to finally mingle with the small town folk and attend a church event. There, the Father of the town decides to give him a gift.
Highlights: This story is nicely formatted though the paragraphs could be separated a little more still. This tale flows like a river and it’s easy to read and get lost in the story, good job!
For improvement: Some of the paragraphs could be cut up even more to make them smaller but they are not bad as they are. Overall a nicely put together story!
Question time! Answer in a post and tag @FurryWeekly and @DoggyDozu if it’s on Twitter!
Do you like peaches?
What’s your favorite fruit?
⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰
That will be all for today folks. I hope you have enjoyed my pick!
Let’s give our authors a round of applause for their hard work! Remember to include the tags #FurryWeekly and #WritingShowcase in your posts if you want us to see your own writing on any platform! See you all next time, and now I'll sashay away.

WRITING 101
Millions of voxels swirl throughout the void. There is no air to resist them, no sky to birth them, and no sun to light them. It is only the voxels, spinning noiselessly through inky blackness. But they soon take shape. Puffy clouds, wispy and carefree, drift along a baby-blue background. Distant trees grow from the fluttering leaves to the mighty trunks. Sunflowers and poppies, all blocky and pixelated, spring up from the paper-thin grass. Last but not least, a feathered, humanoid form in a well-fitted suit materializes from the remaining black, reddish-brown, and cream voxels.
Tad opens his beak wide and gulps down the crisp air. He visited numerous digital places in the past, but this low-poly landscape of windswept hills and towering trees soundly takes the cake for the most fascinating space. Granted, getting here felt like squeezing down a single thread on a computer processing unit; however, the reward is worth the brief but violent shock.
“Wow…”
The hawk looks around. He played this game for more than ten years. He even experienced it in virtual reality. However, to stand here with grass tickling his talons and a breeze ruffling the feathers on his head.... It feels like a dream come true.
A few seconds later, a rush of gray voxels assemble themselves just a few feet away. The Camera briefly shakes itself, then looks around at the scene. It offers a quizzical whizz.
“Have you ever seen this before?”
A whirr.
“This…” says Tad, sweeping his arms around and spinning on the spot, “is Minecraft! Possibly one of the most influential games ever created!”
He stops spinning to look at his friend. The Camera simply looks back.
“You’ve never heard of Minecraft?”
A shake of the metal chassis.
“Ah… well, nevermind. I’m not here to lecture you on the game.”
He waves his hand forward and begins to walk. The Camera follows.
“I do want to show you something… but how about a little bit of this week’s Writing 101?”
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
Hello friends, and welcome to Furry Weekly’s Writing 101! I’m Bryce Griffin, here to get all you writers out there the inside scoop on literature tips and tricks. Let’s get started!
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
Let’s continue our discussions about clauses. Last week, we broadly compared two different clauses in English: the independent clause and the dependent clause. Both clauses contain a subject and a verb; however, only the independent clause is able to stand on its own as a complete sentence. The dependent clause cannot. Dependent clauses are generally classified as either a noun clause, an adjective clause, or an adverb clause. Today, we’ll examine the noun clause.
Here’s an example of a noun clause in a sentence:
“Whatever I ate last night gave me bad stomach cramps.”
The noun clause “Whatever I ate last night” serves as such because it can be replaced by a single noun like so:
“The shrimp gave me bad stomach cramps.”
Of course, the noun clause is not always a rigid or clear-cut definition. It is flexible like any other rule in English. A point to look out for, however, is clarity in the message you’re conveying. It’s easy to unintentionally muddy up a sentence by stringing together a complex syntax. Pay attention to the sentence’s flow and keep an eye out for how those clauses interact. Can you say the same thing with fewer words?
Here’s another example:
“Whichever kind of car you prefer will be a good daily driver for you.”
Let’s clean up the wishy-washy language:
“A sedan will be a good daily driver for you.”
It’s perfectly okay to use noun clauses. However, keep in mind that the cleaner and tighter you keep your language, the more firm and engaging it will be to your reader.

“So in-between regular work and writing for this week’s segment, I’ve been messing around with the game....”
They continue walking, right up until they meet a steep drop. It’s a cliff that rockets down to sea level, and the view opens up to a gorgeous bay. The sun is beginning to set behind them, though the game’s simple graphics provide only flat light.
“I think I found out how to make this all look a lot better.”
Tad reaches into his back pocket. From seemingly nothing, an interface unsheaths itself and draws an entire display right in front of the two, as if a giant tablet rests on an invisible podium. Tad taps through the menus with his feathery fingers, clicking on buttons and adjusting sliders.
“Okay,” he says after many adjustments. His finger hovers over a button labeled “APPLY CHANGES” and adds, “Are you ready?”
A nod.
“All right… RTX is… on!”
The world freezes. The moment it thaws, a burst of golden rays and stunning shadows spread forth. The bay now catches each and every ray of sunlight striking the rippling water’s surface. And the water… those reflections! They’re magnificent! Tad never saw Minecraft reflect the world like this. It’s so beautiful… so true-to-life… but at the same time, not a hint of the original game vanished. All of the chunky textures and perfectly-cubed blocks remained… they are simply bathed in true-to-life lighting that only the best graphics cards could faithfully represent.
For a moment, they simply look. When the Camera turns to its friend, it notices a hawk with a radiating smile bent crooked by a mighty will to hold back tears.
“I… I think I’m gonna cry…” he whispered.

PHOTOGRAPHY 101
Hello, friends and photografurs! Welcome back to this week's Photography 101! I'm your host, Jaden (Discord @ Jaden711#0663). These next couple of issues we’ll be going over the basics of photography.
ISO stands for the International Organization for Standardization. The ISO is a non-governmental organization that is responsible for 24890 national standardizations spanning every facet of life you can think of. Clothing, Automobiles, Textiles, food, space vehicles, alloy smithing and of course, cameras.
It's because of the ISO that cameras today are so easy to use. Can you imagine how hard photography would be if an ISO of 400 was darker on a Canon camera and brighter on a Sony camera? It's because of the ISO that we don't have to worry about that happening; every camera will have the same brightness for the same ISO setting.
But what is ISO exactly? Back when film cameras were your only option, the ISO referred to your film speed or, in more simple terms, how sensitive the film was to light. In America, this was referred to as the ASA, and in Europe, it was called the DIN. Each used different ways to measure and explain the film's sensitivity, and it wasn't until 1974 that these different standards merged together to become the ISO setting that we all love today.
But how is this used in digital cameras? In digital cameras, ISO refers to the sensitivity of the camera's sensor. This is useful in dark shooting situations or if you need a fast shutter speed to remove blur or capture a fast-moving subject. But be careful; the higher an ISO value is, the more likely you are to have noise in your photo, which is a grainy effect that can appear on your photos and is typically not ideal for most shooting conditions.
To adjust your ISO manually, you’ll need to shoot in manual mode, in most other modes your ISO will be automatically adjusted for you with the exception of some camera models allowing you to adjust your ISO in these modes as well, so it's worth checking your user manual to see if your camera allows this. If you're new to photography it's recommended to shoot in automatic modes first to naturally learn the creative aspects of photography and have your camera adjust all the settings for you before trying to learn all the technical aspects in manual modes. To adjust your ISO in manual mode use the dial or touchscreen to adjust it. This is different for every make and model of camera, so if you're feeling lost or can't figure out how to adjust the ISO level, make sure to take a look at your user manual. It will give you instructions for your specific camera model.
The basics for ISO are as follows:
The higher your ISO level is, the brighter your photo will be, and the lower your ISO level is, the darker your photo will be. So, an ISO level of 1600 will produce a brighter photo than an ISO level of 600.
If you are taking a photo in harsh lighting conditions, decrease your ISO.
If you are taking a photo in dark lighting conditions, increase your aperture as wide as possible before increasing your ISO. If the photo is still too dark then increase your ISO and if your photo is still too dark, then slowly increase your shutter speed and attach a tripod if necessary.
If you need to increase your shutter speed to freeze a moving object or prevent camera shake, increase your ISO.
If you need to decrease your shutter speed to create blur, then decrease your ISO.
If your photos are turning out too bright, decrease your ISO.
If your photos are turning out too dark, increase your ISO.
ISO is the first of many things we’ll be talking about for back to basics, so check in next issue for a lesson on shutter speed and how to use it!

That concludes this week's segment! If you have any questions or would like to share your photos, don't be afraid to shoot me (Discord @ Jaden711#0663) a message!

From Friday August 18 - Sunday August 20, the Sheraton Downtown Denver Hotel in Denver, Colorado, USA plans to welcome DenFur. This con hosted just shy of 3,000 attendees in 2023 and seeks to smash that record this year. Dust off spurs and hang on to your ten-gallon hat - the theme for 2023 is Wild West Rocky Mountain Gold Rush! Artist TiggerPup, fursuit maker Sparkle Creation, cartoonist Toivo Kaartinen, and tech innovator Atlas (whom you may recognize as a previous Character Interview subject here at Furry Weekly) will be the Guests of Honor. DenFur’s schedule is jam-packed full of events including stand-up comedy, public fursuiting workshops, concerts, VR zone, an entire pool toy track, and escape rooms all three days of the con. Take a look at their website to plan out your fun-filled weekend in advance.

Woodstock will also take place Friday August 18 - Sunday August 20. This isn’t what you may be imagining, though - it’s a brand new furry convention at De Brink Hopper in Herentals, Belgium! Woodstock’s mission statement for 2023 is to unite furries and bring everyone together for friendship, creativity, shared interests, and most of all, a fun time. Planned events include a rave, furwalk, auction, panels, dealer’s den, and group picture. As this is a small first-year event, not too many details are available, so keep your finger on the pulse of this sprightly newcomer to the furry con scene.

The inaugural SloFluffCon is happening at the Hotel Evropa in Celje, Slovenia from Saturday August 19 - Tuesday August 22. Perhaps taking inspiration from some earlier 2023 global furcons, the chosen theme is Secret Agents. Though it’s only their first year, SloFluffCon staff have prepared a jam-packed 4 days of entertainment, including dances, a coffee-tasting panel, fursuit programming, games, and dealer’s den. Have a look at SloFluffCon’s website to see a list of registered attendees, including which countries they’re from, and get excited for all the other furries you’ll get to meet and hang out with at con!

If you're looking for something a bit different than the typical urban furry convention, Camp Feral! is happening from Thursday August 24 - Monday August 28 atAlgonquin Park, Ontario, Canada. This event boasts the honors of being the first furry con in Canada as well as the first furry summer camp. 2023's theme is Business Casual, and the “not-guest-of-honor” is Blazen the Dragon. The Camp Feral! site is quite remote, far from the typical creature comforts, and the only ways to get to the campsite are by driving or taking the Feral Bus, which you can sign up for online. Attendees to Camp Feral! can unwind in the outdoors with classic camp activities like swimming, canoeing, s’mores, and nature hikes. But what would a furry con - even an outdoors one - be without furry programming? Fear not, you can also participate in furry improv, pin trading, fursuit events, music, and gaming. If you're a furry who prefers to walk on the wild side, Camp Feral! would be right up your alley!

Is that menacing laughter coming from your computer? No need to worry (or, actually, you probably should), it’s just Digital Villainy Summit! This online, queer villain themed furry convention is back with a brand-new moniker from Friday August 25 - Sunday August 27. DVS is a fully online convention that can be attended for free by folks around the world, from the comfort of your own home! This year, funds will be raised for the England-based charity akt. Attendees can expect panels, live art tutorials, Q&A sessions, interactive gaming, and talks hosted by Guest of Honor Mabel Greysmoke. Programming will be broadcast live on Picarto and Discord, where folks can chat and interact with each other. Unique to DVS is their online Dealer's Den, where each dealer draws their own original table art! It really captures the feel of browsing the wares at a furry convention, right down to taking home your own art commissions, stickers, apparel, and other souvenirs - all without ever leaving your chair! Though registration is free, you must be 18 years old to take part in DVS.

Furrydelphia will host its sixth iteration from Friday August 25 - Sunday August 27. As you may have guessed from the name, this con is held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, specifically at the Sheraton Downtown Philadelphia. This year, the con has chosen a very whimsical theme evoking a certain Swedish furniture store. Furrydelphia will welcome as its Guest of Honor Stripe Kazama, executive chef for NordicFuzzCon, who’ll be hosting multiple panels throughout the weekend. Merch hounds will be delighted to hear that Furrydelphia is offering not just a Dealer's Den, nor an Artist Alley, but also an 18+ Night Market where you can shop 'til you drop and take home art and goods made by members of the furry community. The schedule is still being finalized, but previous years have seen a dance competition, floor wars, talent show, panels, and DJs, so folks can expect more of the same this year at Furrydelphia. Attendees must present proof of COVID-19 vaccination, and masks are required in the Dealer’s Den.

IndyFurCon is back from Friday August 27 - Sunday August 29 in Indianapolis, the state capital of Indiana, USA. This year, the con is trying out a new venue, the Wyndham Indianapolis West. “Mission: Impawssible” is the theme for 2023, and I’m starting to sense a certain recurring thread among these furry conventions! In keeping with the theme, the schedule will include panels about spy cars, dueling talks about why bunnies are the best or worst spies, “stirred not shaken” mixology, a “laser dodge” maze game, and a con-wide game of I Spy with prizes. IFC’s charity, once again, is the Exotic Animal Rescue and Pet Sanctuary (EARPS), and the con will hold a charity auction on Sunday to raise money for the EARPS’s mission to save unorthodox pets. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination and at least one booster is required to attend.
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
Last but certainly not least, Big Sky Camp Paw takes place at the Hellgate Campground near Helena, Montana, USA from Thursday August 31 - Tuesday September 5. This furry camping con started way back in 2012 and grew over the years to the 6-day event it is today. Basic attendance does not include the cost of camping, of which there are a limited number of available spots at the campsite. BSCP attendees should expect to bring their own food, cooking equipment, sleeping unit, and weather-appropriate gear and attire. Be aware that the location is remote, and cell service may be spotty or unavailable. The schedule is still being finalized, so if you’re looking to go, don’t forget to check BSCP’s online platforms closer to con time. All attendees must be at least 18 years of age.

Remember to get vaxxed and wear your face mask when meeting up with any furs in person.
As my fellow segment hosts have mentioned, this issue celebrates Furry Weekly’s anniversary. On a more personal note, August also marks my first full year as Convention Calendar segment host! I signed on in 2022 with the hope to record our community’s gatherings for posterity and help furries get connected with their peers, no matter where in the world they may live. The Furry Weekly staff welcomed me in with open arms, and week by week, I felt inspired to take on more roles behind the scenes and bring fresh ideas to the table. I never expected how much experience, stress, and pride I would get out of being part of the Furry Weekly team. Above all, I’m glad that my segment has brought enjoyment to so many readers, and I’m looking forward to continuing for years to come!
Got questions or suggestions for Convention Calendar? Feel free to drop me a line on Twitter and the Fediverse, or hit me up at any of the other platforms linked on my website. If there’s an upcoming con you want to ensure we cover here on Furry Weekly, don’t hesitate to let me know. Have fun and stay safe out there!

FURRY QUOTE
Welcome back friends, happy weekend! Ellie here with this week’s Furry Quote! I know it’s been a very long time since I’ve been here, and for that I apologize. I also apologize in advance for sporadic quotes for a little bit going forward. I’ve just started graduate school in preparation for a degree in health care, so I am going to be quite busy, heh. Anyhow, this week’s quote is one that I’ve shared before, but it’s becoming very relevant for me again, so I need to share it with you once again.
This week, we’re talking about:
Taking Care of Yourself
As I’m starting to move into my professional career, a vague version of this quote was brought up in a professionalism forum that I attended for my masters’ degree in health sciences. This quote was mentioned in reference to health care. A tired doctor that doesn’t take care of themselves cannot deliver good care to their patients. Neither can a good nurse, a good dentist, a good veterinarian, or, in my case, a good clinical lab technician. But this quote doesn’t just bear weight for medical professionals. It bears weight for professional friends, too.
Friends, we’ve gotta take care of ourselves in order to properly take care of others. There will be days when our friends and family are running on empty and need a refill of love and confidence and whatever else we can give them. But have you tried pouring water into a glass from an empty pitcher? It doesn’t work, right? Our lives are the same way. You cannot be a recharge for someone if you don’t have the energy in you to do so. And that energy comes from properly taking care of yourself.
Some days that’s easier said than done. Believe me, I know, my spoons can be a bit limited some days. I understand. But it is important that we strive, to the best of our abilities, to take care of ourselves. Relax. Rest up. Do a small thing to make you happy, tidy up one area, take a nice, relaxing shower. Pour into yourself so that you may be able to readily pour into others who need you.
~~~~~
That’s all for this week! Thank you for joining me to talk about taking care of yourself! If you have a topic you’d like me to cover or a quote you’d like them to share, feel free to reach out to me on Instagram or DeviantArt.
See you next time.
