FURRY OF THE WEEK
How’s it going everyone? My name is Yeshua and I’m making a quick appearance today to bring you the Furry of the Week segment! Though, remember that we’re still looking for more people to host this segment, so if you like seeing all the positivity the fandom has to offer, consider trying out for this role! You can reach out to me or Carkas if you’re interested!
Today we’re highlighting Patch the Cat, who makes artwork for some folks in the fandom!
If you’ve come across Patch’s social media recently, you’ve probably noticed he’s sharing a lot of videos drawing portraits of different fursuiters and people in the community. It was never very clear to me if these were commissions, so I reached out to find out more! It’s actually pretty simple, though: Patch finds a subject, and just draws them for fun! “I really just see a lot of cute fursuits and friends and want to surprise them with a nice drawing. The videos I always try to make chill, add some soothing music, just wholesome and fun.”
How cool is that? Of course, drawing people’s characters and giving them the art is a really sweet gesture, but if you didn’t notice, something unique about how Patch does this is that he draws the portraits traditionally! If that wasn’t enough, Patch uses charcoal for the drawings, a medium that really isn’t seen often. He uses charcoal sticks on A2 paper, and adds color with colored pencils. Not only is it a unique medium; fortunately for Patch, it’s also very fun to work with! “I think I like these hard-to-erase mediums a lot, they make a work so real and lively, I love it!”
As for the setup, Patch has a retractable easel where he draws – and there’s a specific reason why it’s retractable, but we’ll get to that later! Patch’s art style is heavily inspired by kemono styles, “considering my own suit is also kemono and I just love the style! Whenever I choose a toony suit to draw I just make it in my kemono style!”
Patch only recently started doing this as of writing this article, and there’s a bit of a story behind how it all came together. In 2024 Patch went back and forth between media, from pencil, to digital, to pen, back to digital, to charcoal, to digital again, and repeat. Everything he tried just wasn’t working for his art. Patch is in an art academy but says he doesn’t make a lot of illustrations because he’s usually asked to do abstract paintings, but unfortunately for him he isn’t a fan of abstract or paint. He had an idea though: “I hadn’t tried making a furry portrait with charcoal before.”
Patch got to work on a charcoal portrait for a friend, who loved it! After that, he thought, why not draw a portrait while wearing his partial and make a video out of it? I’ll let him explain how that went:
I don’t know about you all, but I think this is such a cool thing Patch is doing! I love hearing when folks in the fandom try something that ends up bringing a lot of joy to others, as well as themselves! Remember how I said Patch has a retractable easel to draw his portraits? That’s because he decided to do these portraits at a convention! At Reffurence 2024 he drew five free portraits for random furries in the lobby of the convention. Patch says he loved everyone’s reactions and made his convention experience much more fun!
Speaking of Patch having fun, he says doing these portraits in fursuit has been very enjoyable, even beyond getting to give people wonderful art! This is specifically because of his idea to wear his partial while doing the portraits and making videos out of it:
Huge congrats to Patch on being Furry of the Week! His portraits are no doubt lovely gifts, and it’s awesome that doing them is an enjoyable activity for him!
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
That’s all for today’s edition of Furry of the Week! I hope you all enjoyed reading about Patch’s wonderful gesture of gifting some neat art! If you want to check it out, just visit his social media and give him a follow if you like what he does!
Remember we’re always looking for the next Furry of the Week! If you have someone you’d like to nominate, please fill out this short form with your nominee. You can also let us know who you’d like to see here by emailing furryweeklysubmissions@gmail.com.
Thanks for reading this segment! We hope to be back next time with another Furry of the Week, but until then, take care, and we hope you enjoy the rest of the magazine!

ART CORNER
Hello reader! My name is Ozzie and I’m here showing you some awesome artists this week! Before we dive in, we are looking for people like you to find and feature the talented artists in our community. If that sounds like something you are passionate about, please reach out to Yeshua or Carkas about co-hosting this segment!
Northern Light Couples Commission by DinoWisest
Up first we have a commission piece done by DinoWisest. This piece includes a furry couple sitting enjoying a sunset with the northern lights. The sky is just absolutely gorgeous. The sunset is such a beautiful blend of colors, showing that last minute of light before the stars take over. The northern lights are so bright and believable, and the gentle glow behind the trees all come together to highlight the subjects perfectly!
Another thing I love about this piece is how the perspective is turned slightly. It makes it seem like these lovely characters set up the camera themselves! It really adds to the personal and intimate nature of the commission. Fantastic work, Dino!
⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰
Portrait of Judith by JudithDocks
Next is a piece of the lovely green fursona of Judith Docks. What caught my eye about this piece was the soft colors and style. The character has a nice color pallet in their design already, and the blue highlights really make it pop. The artist’s choices in terms of details, lines, and anatomy also add to the overall softness of the piece, including the lack of hard corners, making the fur come off really fluffy. Look at the tail, who wouldn’t want to snuggle that!
Besides the soft and delicate nature of the piece overall, another aspect I love is the expression. Judith seems to be more on the sad side, with a very subtle frown, gentle eyes, and worried eyebrows. It is so expressive and gives off a lot of emotion, but when you back up and look at it all together, the vibe of the work makes me feel like it's all going to be alright. Amazing job, JudithDocks!
⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰
Night and Day Commission Piece by Avery’s Soft Loft
Last but not least, we have a commission piece done by Avery. These pieces feature two furries hiking up a mountainside together, one at night and one in the day. The lighting on both of these pieces is absolutely phenomenal and made me gasp when I saw them! The day time has these highlights around the hands and hair that really do a great job of showing us a bright, warm ray of sunshine. The glow is gone in the moonlight, just as you would expect, and instead we have a brisk, clear night you can see the stars in. It is such a neat thing when art can make you feel like you are just right there in it.
Outside of the lighting, the subjects of the piece are so stinking cute. The feline critter has such a sweet and caring face as they reach out their paw to the canine. Their lines are crisp and their posing is spot on to their positions on the mountain and how they are climbing. Great job, Avery!

FURSUIT FOCUS
Hi you all! It’s Yeshua again – this time with the Fursuit Focus segment! In case you missed it, I’m writing this segment when I get a chance since we don’t have a permanent host right now, so I’ll keep doing my best to share with you fursuiters in the community while we find a permanent host! Huge thanks for your patience with this!
This time we’re visiting one of the fandom’s most popular genres: blue canines! Let’s meet Freazy!
Look at this cool wolf! He’s so big and fluffy! This is a wonderful kemono-styled fursuit with so many neat features; the eye shape, short snout, tiny blep, and small fangs along with the digitigrade legs and big ears all come together nicely to achieve that kemono look. Like I mentioned earlier, Freazy definitely falls into the category of blue dogs, and his design and somewhat complex fur patterns are very cool to see! There are three shades of blue for Freazy’s fur, with the bright and navy blue dominating most of the design along with white fur. Then there’s a more cyan-looking color for the feet paws that complements the rest of the colors well! Huge props to Copper777 for their work on this fursuit; you can easily tell there’s someone very talented behind this craft!
Freazy is a pretty chill wolf! His favorite things to do while fursuiting is simply hanging out with friends and meeting new people: “It’s very refreshing for me to learn more about the world and people.” When it comes to taking photos, Freazy likes posing in natural environments. His favorites? Wooded areas and abandoned places! He says he likes these settings because they give an air of nostalgia that he enjoys. If you check out Freazy’s pictures on social media, you’ll definitely see a lot of photos of him outdoors, or with fursuiters! And sometimes with fursuiters outdoors! Freazy also says he likes to post some cute content, so sometimes you’ll see him doing some silly and wholesome stuff!
Freazy has been in the fursuiting scene for quite a long time now! He started back in 2017 with his very first fursuit made by Priam Wolf. That was the first version of his blue wolf! He got that fursuit about two years after finding out about fursuits. Freazy came across and actually got to meet a lot of fursuiters at conventions in 2015, which made him want to fursuit himself! Freazy used his first fursuit for seven years at many conventions, meets, and other events, until he got version two of his wolf in October 2024, which is only a few months ago as of writing this! In fact, as of writing this, Freazy’s social media still has a lot of photos where he uses his first fursuit, even giving him a proper goodbye before starting to focus on V2 of his character’s suit.
So, what’s next for Freazy? Like you read earlier, he loves to take photos and is a very friendly wolf, so you can definitely expect a lot more adventures, especially since his suit is still very new! Plus, Freazy does have some big ideas about other stuff he would like to do while fursuiting. I’ll let him explain one of the things he has at the top of his list: “I would love to go to Japan with my fursuit and take pictures in front of temples, cherry trees, and beautiful landscapes, especially to meet the local furries!” Freazy would totally fit in Japan, don’t you think? If you keep up with him, you just might catch a glimpse of a Japanese adventure with him!
Fursuiting is definitely a lot of fun, and for some, it can become a truly meaningful hobby; that’s the case with Freazy! I will let him finish the segment with a few remarks he had about fursuiting:
“I would also like to add that fursuiting has helped me a lot to gain confidence in myself, that it is something really special for me. I was able to discover an absolutely incredible universe. I recommend everyone to ask themselves who we really are and take the time to know our passion.”
⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰
That’s it for today’s edition of Fursuit Focus! Thanks for reading, and if you enjoyed getting to know a bit about Freazy and his fursuiting adventures, I definitely recommend giving him a follow!
I’m always watching out for more fluffy individuals to share with you all, so if you’re a fursuiter and you want to appear on this segment, reach out to me or preferably – email us at furryweeklysubmissions@gmail.com to tell us you’d like to be featured! We also have a Submissions Form you can fill out if you prefer!
Thanks so much if you’ve read this far! I’m Yeshua and I hope to see you all next time with another fursuiter to talk about! Until then, take care!

ANIMAL OF THE WEEK
Hello animal enthusiasts, and welcome to another edition of Animal of the Week! This is Danielle once again popping in as a guest appearance.
Animal of the Week is a segment where we highlight an animal that is really cool, cute, creepy, or fascinating. Whenever possible, we do symbolically adopt the animal. However, sadly, only some animals have the privilege to have that as an option. Thus, we collect extra funds to donate to many different species conservation charities, donate towards wildlife rehabilitation programs, or send funds to scientists so that they can research underappreciated animal species. Join us on this fun adventure, and I hope that you, too, will enjoy these amazing animals!
Here in the United States, it’s a time for giving thanks. Thanksgiving was on November 28th, so let’s examine the iconic species of this holiday before we move into the joyful season of Christmas.
This week, let’s gobble with wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo)!
The wild turkey is an upland game bird native to North America. They’re one of two extant species of turkey and is the heaviest member of the order Galliformes. It is the ancestor to the domestic turkey (M. g. domesticus), which was originally derived from a southern Mexican subspecies of wild turkey.
Wild turkeys are very large, plump birds with long legs, wide, rounded tails, and a small head on a long, slim neck. Turkeys are dark overall with a bronze-green iridescence to most of their plumage. Their wings are dark and boldly barred with white. A wild turkey’s rump and tail feathers are broadly tipped with rusty or white. The bare skin of the head and neck varies from red to blue to gray. Wild turkeys in the Rocky Mountains tend to have whitish tips to the rump and tail feathers, whereas other populations have rusty or chestnut tail tips.
In early spring, males gather in clearings to perform courtship displays. They puff up their body feathers, flare their tails into a vertical fan, and strut slowly while giving a characteristic gobbling call. At night, turkeys fly up into trees to roost in groups. They get around mostly by walking, though they can also run and fly; when threatened, females tend to fly while males tend to run. At sundown, turkeys fly into the lower limbs of trees and move upward from limb to limb to a high roost spot. They usually roost in flocks but can sometimes individually.
Courting males gobble to attract females and warn competing males. They display for females by strutting with their tails fanned and wings lowered while making non-vocal hums and chump sounds. Males breed with multiple mates and form all-male flocks outside of the breeding season, leaving the chick-rearing to the females. The chicks travel in a family group with their mother, often combining with other family groups to form large flocks of young turkeys accompanied by two or more adult females. Each sex has an independent pecking order with a stable female hierarchy and a constantly changing male hierarchy.
Wild turkeys live year-round in open and mature forests with interspersed clearings such as edges and fields, particularly in nut trees such as oak, hickory, or beech. You may also see them along roads and in woodsy backyards. After being hunted out of large parts of their range, turkeys were reintroduced and are numerous once again. They can be found in 49 states in the United States (excluding Alaska), parts of Mexico, and parts of southern Alberta, Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan, Canada.
Turkeys travel in flocks and search on the ground for nuts, berries, insects, and snails by using their strong feet to scratch leaf litter out of the way. They’ll sometimes climb into shrubs or low trees for fruits. When deep snow covers the ground, they eat hemlock buds, evergreen ferns, spore-covered fronds of sensitive ferns, club mosses, and burdock. During the spring, they may dig up plant bulbs if nuts are scarce. In late spring and summer, wild turkeys strip seeds from sedges and grasses, occasionally supplementing their plant diet with salamanders, snails, ground beetles, and other insects. Like most birds, they swallow grit to help digest their food.
★ Wild turkeys have played a significant role in the cultures of many Native American tribes all over North America such as for dances, cloaks, and traditional ceremonies.
★ The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service estimates 21 percent of all U.S. hunters (about 2.5 million people) pursue turkey, making it the second most-sought game bird species after deer.
★ Wild turkeys are strong fliers that can approach 60 mph (97 kph) with three times better eyesight than ours.
★ Males are known as toms, females as hens, and juveniles as poults.
Wild turkeys are numerous, and their populations increased sharply between 1966 and 2019, according to the North American Breeding Survey. After drastic declines during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries from hunting and habitat loss, wild turkeys regained and expanded their range. However, one subspecies disappeared from New England in the mid-nineteenth century, surviving in small numbers in wilderness areas of the gulf states, the Ozarks, and the Appalachian and Cumberland plateaus. Another subspecies disappeared from parts of Texas while yet another declined very steeply in numbers throughout the southwest. In the early twentieth century, people tried unsuccessfully to use farm turkeys for restoring wild populations, but in the late 1940s, they began to successfully transplant wild-caught turkeys into suitable habitat. No other game bird has responded so well to the efforts of game managers. The birds are popular among hunters. Their expanding populations have made it possible for hunting seasons to be put in place in all 49 states in the United States in their range.

ART 101
Clinging to the edges of our forms, casting over the depths of our landscapes, and catching on the shapes of our illustrations is the humble shadow. That which gives our subjects the appearance of three dimensional objects!
Hi all, Shroom here! It's time to look at the unique ways we can cast some shadows in our art. Let’s talk about Shading!
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
Now, for our purposes we'll keep ourselves confined to four major techniques of shading principles or styles. But first and foremost, what is shading?
Shading is known simply as the illustrative illusion of using lights and dark tints of color to give the appearance of volume and depth. In other words, what makes something LOOK three dimensional.
Look being the keyword here as any type of shadow that gives the appearance of form works within the visual medium. So let's start simple.
CROSS HATCHING! There's a few different ways to execute this option, but the idea is using small dashed lines around the contour of a subject's form to give the indication of a shadow.
More lines densely packed together work to showcase something with greater depths. The opposite, sparse and spaced out lines, work to illustrate a highlight.
Of course, cross hatching also means that those dashed lines don't have to strictly be in parallel to one another. They can also cross over themselves to establish deeper and more prominent shadows.
Interestingly enough, you aren't restricted to just lines.
Dots, stars, sparks, and any shape you can think of works under the cross hatching method, but is known as something called Stippling. Both are unique, but utilize the same principle of clustering and spacing out the marks used for shading.
AIRBRUSHING! Moving on, we get a technique with a bit more of a soft edge. Airbrush shading utilizes the nature of a dark tinted gradient to give a subject form and depth.
Often this appears in a lot of digital art as several drawing programs come with a default airbrush, well, brush. But, it can be more commonly seen in Graffiti or Spray Paint Art. This is mainly due to both primarily working with spray paint cans and thus are limited to that application of paint.
But make no mistake!
Though the application is limited, the creativity is not. When I worked with Graffiti and Spray Paint Artists, I learned and observed a variety of ways they created their art using other methods. Whether it was with stenciling, flicking paint, scrapping with a palette knife, or bending cardstock paper to create controled sprays of paint: the art they made was beautiful.
Airbrush shading can and does utilize many of the methods I saw. It's best to understand that the shadows created work best in the form of gradients. Understanding that allows us to better utilize this technique in our art.
CEL SHADING! Now, this one might be very familiar to a lot of us even if we didn't know its name. As this technique is often used in video games, cartoons, or comics.
Cel shading is the simple practice of using sharply defined contour shadows. Which is to say, the shading created is not blended.
The intensity of the shadow might differ from application to application, but the general rule of thumb are those sharp edges. It allows for shadows to be defined quickly and easily to communicate to viewers or readers that a subject has form.
Furthermore, it's a very fun way of creating depth and forces our minds to really focus on the most important and necessary shadows within our art.
RENDERING! Unlike our previous examples, rendering leans on the understanding of a painterly application. Basically, it's at this point we start blending. For me, this is the type of shading I utilize the most.
Blending our shadows allows for them to more accurately represent the texture of each subject. Which is important in our particular case as many fursonas might have different fur types, textures, or forms.
Think of if a character has feathers somewhere or scales. The prior techniques can work to shade those textures, but rendering is built around capturing them as closely as possible.
By blending, we create a painterly-like application of our shadows. I often blend with the same brushes I use to both sketch and apply color. making something that has that appearance of being painted.
These are simply four core ways that many artists apply shading. Whichever technique works best for the art you want to create, go for it! Studying other artists and practicing other techniques can help us solidify those choices.
For the sake of practice, pick a singular subject and shade them using these techniques. Some might take more time than others, but you may start to like how certain ones look or capture a subject. Regardless, have fun with it!

We’re now entering that special time of year where you can ring in 2024 at a convention surrounded by all your furry friends! The first of these cons we’ll cover is Furvester, held at the Hotel Fortuna in Reutlingen, Germany. Four full days of fantasy await you from Wednesday December 29 - Sunday January 2, with their theme “Into the Cyberspace!” Furvester’s Guest of Honor this year is Thabo Meerkat, an artist and event organiser from the Netherlands. On Furvester’s website, you can find an informative “Nose Count” page, which breaks down current registrant demographics by country of origin, age, fursuit ownership, and even T-shirt size using fun bar graphs. Furvester proudly partners with De Poezenboot Amsterdam (The Catboat Foundation), and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to interact with them over the course of the con, whether at their Meet the Charity panel, participating in the charity auction, or donating to the fursuiter bucket brigade as they march around the hotel. Attendees must be 18 years of age or older to register for Furvester.

New Year’s Furry Ball takes place Monday December 30 - Wednesday January 1 at The Embassy Suites Newark Wilmington in Newark, Delaware, USA. The theme this year is Under Construction! With a Dealer’s Den, fursuit parade and group photo, game room, charity raffle, dances, and of course a ball drop ceremony, it’s amazing how much excitement they can pack in! No need to worry about dinner either, as a fully catered complimentary buffet dinner is included with your registration. NYFB recognizes The Furs State founder and volunteer Kitt3ns as their Guest of Honor this year. The charity is I Am Me Inc., an organization offering safe social spaces with programs that uplift and unify the LGBTQ community, which attendees can support through donations collected over the evening as well as the charity raffle.

Anthro Northwest 7 is scheduled for January 2-5 at the Hyatt Regency Seattle in the state of Washington, making it an ideal event for furs living in and around the pacific northwest of the U.S., and even some Canadian furries living in the west! ANW7 is inviting its guests to start the year by celebrating members of the fandom who are no longer with us as well as generally remembering good memories of the past – with the theme “Remembrance.” As such, offering a remembrance is part of the plans for the convention. Based on the event’s website, this time you can also expect an art show, a photography showcase, a dance competition and battle, panels, and more. If you’re thinking about going and are over 16, it costs $99 for the full weekend. Remember to check out ANW’s website and socials to keep up with updates!

This month’s calendar graphic is by Furse and features Shiina, one of our cover artists who will be at MFF in December! It sure is a big con, so please stop and say hi to her if you happen to cross paths; she will also be fursuiting so look out for that! Remember to stay healthy by keeping up-to-date on booster shots and wearing your face mask when meeting up with any furs in person. As the year draws to a close, now is a time to reflect on everything we’ve endured and accomplished in 2024, individually and as a community. Though I don’t know what the future holds for me, my hope is to continue doing meaningful work for the benefit of the furry community here at Furry Weekly and beyond.
Got questions or suggestions for Convention Calendar? Feel free to drop me a line on the Fediverse or hit me up at any of the other platforms linked on my website. If there’s an upcoming con you want to ensure we cover here on Furry Weekly, don’t hesitate to let me know. Have fun and stay safe out there!

FURRY QUOTE
Howdy, all! Tide again. I hope everyone is doing well. Lately, love has been constantly on my mind, and also the importance of self love. So, I decided to pick what is a rather unconventional quote about love, but one from which I think we can draw a lot of wisdom if we start to apply it to our everyday lives.
”You can search throughout the entire universe for someone who is more deserving of your love and affection than you are yourself, and that person is not to be found anywhere. You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe deserve your love and affection.”
It is so easy to focus on loving others, especially for people pleasers like myself or for people who are in love, but it is so important that we remember to not only love ourselves, but that we are worthy of love. Love is not something that should be conditional. For example you shouldn’t have to sacrifice your future or your happiness just to be able to receive love from someone. This is also true of self-love. You do not need to become famous or be rich or live up to all of your parents’ or society’s expectations to be deserving of your own love. The fact that you exist means you are worthy of your love. The fact that you woke up, regardless of whether you have managed to get yourself out of bed means you are worthy of your own love. And just as the Buddha says, if you look for someone more deserving of your love and affection than yourself, you will not find them. It doesn’t matter if they are a philanthropist who has donated billions or a doctor who has traveled across the world to help in war torn countries. You are still worthy of your own love and affection. Don’t fall into the trap of idolizing someone to the point that you think less of yourself. If you want to use that person as a goal for motivation, then do it! Just don’t sacrifice caring for yourself in the process. Whether your goal is to solve global hunger, travel to space, solve the climate crisis, or simply live happily, your goal is still valid. It is still worthy. Because it is still you.
In the age of social media, it is so, so easy to get caught up in the lives of other people. What new travel adventures has this person gone on? Or perhaps, look at how happy this other person is. The way other people live their lives does not change what is right for you, or perhaps more importantly, does not make you less of a person just because you aren’t doing all of the things that society views as successful for the time period. So if you take anything away from this week's quote, take this, just as you are worthy of other peoples’ love, you are worthy of your own love, unconditionally. Hold the same standards for others that you hold for yourself. Do you love someone despite them having done something terrible to you? Good. Now remember that you are worthy of the same treatment, even if you aren’t perfect. Because no one is.
That’s it for this week’s Furry Quote. Now that you’re all caught up, take a moment and remind yourself just how worthy of love you are. Both from others and yourself.
