FURRY OF THE WEEK
Hello, everyone! This is Danielle once again coming back to shine some more positivity onto you from the furry community. We have another special feature for you this week!
Before we put the spotlight on this week’s feature, I wish to remind all of you that we’re still looking to recruit more hosts for this segment. If you like spreading positivity, then this might be for you! Feel free to message our boss, Yeshua, or our HR, Carkas, if you’re interested in hosting Furry of the Week.
This week, we have a wildlife showcase from Aurawra!
Meet Aurawra, a bat that was kindly named after the Australian furry convention by their 2024 charity, Sydney Wildlife Rescue (SWR). Unfortunately, this bat’s mother was killed on the road when she was just a couple of weeks old. She is now stable and enjoying cuddling her furry monkey toy. Yay!
According to Aurawra’s official website, they were able to raise over $20k for SWR. That is incredible! Be sure to stay tuned for Aurawra 2025 through their Telegram channel for future annoucements.
A sincere thank you goes out to both Aurawra and Sydney Wildlife Rescue for making a positive impact on wildlife. We look forward to seeing what 2025 brings for the both of you.

FURSUIT FOCUS
Hi you all! This is Yeshua once again and I’m happy to be back with another Fursuit Focus segment! In case you don’t know, I’m filling in on this segment when I get a chance since we don’t have a permanent host, so I’m doing my best to bring you all a new fursuiter every issue, but forgive me if I miss a week while we find a permanent writer! Really appreciate your patience with this segment! Let’s meet today’s fluffy individual!
This time we’re getting to know Ajax!
Here we’ve got one of the friendliest foxes you’ll meet! Checking out his design, Ajax has a pretty simple look that’s easy on the eye and quite recognizable! White and blue fur dominate his appearance – with the blue mostly complementing the white like with the markings on the legs and arms, the paws, the hair, the inside of the ears, and nose! The only exception is the chest and stomach where the blue is concentrated on a big part of his body, compared to the other parts. Still, these patterns look great together, and once you see Ajax once, it won’t be too difficult to remember him! Definitely big props to the fursuit maker Coyote Arcade for making Ajax look so good! Aside from how nice the fur and markings look, I think it’s worth highlighting the toony style of the suit; the face’s neutral expression looks straight out of a cartoon, and Ajax has some eyelids to change it up! But even if his expression stayed the same, Ajax still gives off so much personality and energy, and we’ll talk more about that here in a second!
As is typically expected of foxes, Ajax is very playful and just full of energy! His favorite thing to do when he suits up is just make people smile, which is probably not too difficult considering his silly nature! Just one quick scroll through his social media, and you’ll find tons of fun and lighthearted posts and photos, whether he’s posing outdoors, wearing his favorite shades, or whatever else he gets up to! One thing’s for sure though: expect a lot of shenanigans! “I love to march to the beat of my own drum, interact with the public, and all around just make people smile. I'm quite rambunctious and bouncy when I'm out and about. I believe making someone smile is the best possible thing you can do.”
Aside from his lively and bouncy behavior, Ajax has a couple of preferences for taking photos. The first is nature! He loves taking fursuit photos in nature because of the natural colors and light. I see what he means, too; natural environments just complement Ajax’s fursuit so nicely, plus, a fox in nature is right at home, so he looks great in outdoor settings like that! The other big preference Ajax has for photos is using any sort of funky lighting along with set pieces (think of a theater or studio!) – which is of course great for anything from silly photos and skits, to more polished photos. One final thing he mentioned is he also likes to take photos with his car!
While Ajax knows what he likes when it comes to his own fursuit photos, he actually says he doesn’t usually have a lot of time for it because he’s fairly busy. Still, he says he’s got some ideas planned which he wants to keep under wraps for now, but I did get one tiny detail about what to expect: “I can say that it will be very silly!” A couple of other things Ajax mentioned he’d like to do is to go snowboarding or climb a mountain in fursuit – both of which are classic answers in my book!
Ajax’s road to fursuiting is one of the most unique I have personally heard. It starts in a pretty typical way, getting into the furry fandom in high school like a lot of others! After high school though, Ajax started working at Six Flags Great Escape, an amusement park in New York! He was part of the entertainment at the park, performing as many costume characters for four years!
Not only did that give him a good idea of how fursuiting is, but it also helped him get his fursuit, “I worked lots of overtime and long shifts at multiple jobs to afford a commission slot, and I got my suit in summer 2023!” It’s not terribly uncommon for some furries to get into fursuiting after doing something like performing as a mascot, but Ajax definitely embraced this on a whole other level!
Not only is Ajax all in on the fursuiting scene, but since he got his suit, he actually became a sports mascot for a major league team in the United States! Unfortunately he can’t say which team, but considering how much work he has done as a mascot performer, it’s not surprising to hear he’s made it this far! And back in the furry fandom, unsurprisingly, Ajax says he will be fursuiting for a long time: “Fursuiting and making happy memories with friends and strangers alike is such a rewarding feeling and I love being the reason someone smiles.”
Speaking of making memories, there’s a couple of favorites Ajax shared! One of them was meeting Kevin Michael Richardson – who played Jabba the Hutt in Star Wars – while he was fursuiting! Now, personally I don’t follow the Star Wars franchise, but I do know about Jabba the Hutt and especially Kevin Michael Richardson for other roles he’s played, so I instantly think this is such a cool thing Ajax got to do; how could it not be a favorite memory? Along with that, Ajax’s actual favorite memory came pretty recently from the time this article was written. He says he really enjoyed fursuiting at Megaplex 2024: “I met so many people and everyone was just amazing. Made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.”
I think it’s safe to say Ajax was made for fursuiting, and he’s definitely done a lot of it with much more to come! And whatever he does while fursuiting, he’s going to have a lot of fun and probably get into a bunch of shenanigans! It’s not hard to tell Ajax loves people both in and out of the fandom, and I think it’s fitting to end with some advice he has for fursuiting: “Take some time to think about your character’s motivations. Their likes and dislikes, and defining traits! It will help really bring your character to life!”
⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰
That’s all for today’s edition of Fursuit Focus! Thanks a bunch for joining me! If Ajax’s shenanigans piqued your interest, be sure to give him a follow so you don’t miss his next adventure!
Remember that I’m always looking to feature other fursuiters, so if you’re a fursuiter and you want to be on this segment, reach out to me or preferably – you can email us at furryweeklysubmissions@gmail.com to tell us you’d like to be featured! We also have a Submissions Form you can fill out if you prefer!
Thanks if you’ve read this far! I’m Yeshua, and I’m hoping to be back next time with another segment! Until then, take care!

ANIMAL OF THE WEEK
Hello animal enthusiasts, and welcome to another edition of Animal of the Week! This is Danielle once again popping in as a guest appearance.
Animal of the Week is a segment where we highlight an animal that is really cool, cute, creepy, or fascinating. Whenever possible, we do symbolically adopt the animal. However, sadly, only some animals have the privilege to have that as an option. Thus, we collect extra funds to donate to many different species conservation charities, donate towards wildlife rehabilitation programs, or send funds to scientists so that they can research underappreciated animal species. Join us on this fun adventure, and I hope that you, too, will enjoy these amazing animals!
Here in the United States, it’s a time for giving thanks this month. There are many species that can resemble Thanksgiving in various ways, so let’s examine a species associated with this holiday.
This week, we’re taking a look at heath hens (Tympanuchus cupido cupido)!
The heath hen is an extinct subspecies of the greater prairie chicken (Tympanuchus cupido), a large North American bird in the grouse family. Sadly, it became extinct in 1932.
Very similar to the other greater prairie chicken subspecies of the Great Plains, but slightly smaller, the length of the bird was approximately 17 inches (43 cm) and weighed about two pounds (0.9 kg). Several key plumage characteristics separated the heath hens from their Great Plains counterparts. Heath hens generally displayed a strong reddish hue in their plumage, especially in their crop area with much thicker barring throughout the breast and sides. Their pinnae (horns) were generally pointed, and their tails were a grayish brown.
★ Heath hens were one of the first bird species that Americans tried to save from extinction.
★ It is speculated that the Pilgrims' first Thanksgiving dinner featured heath hens and not wild turkey.
★ The last heath hen was a male known as Booming Ben.
Heath hens lived in the scrubby heathland barrens of coastal North America from southernmost New Hampshire to northern Virginia in historical times. The other subspecies of prairie chickens inhabited prairies from Texas north to Indiana and the Dakotas as well as earlier in mid-southern Canada. Heath hens were extremely common in their habitat during colonial times; because of this, along with being a gallinaceous bird, they were hunted by settlers extensively for food.
Owing to intense hunting pressure and possible habitat loss, the population declined rapidly. Perhaps as early as the 1840s, all heath hens were extirpated from the mainland. There were about 300 left on the island of Martha's vineyard off Massachusetts, but by 1890, this number had declined to 120–200 birds mainly due to predation by feral cats and poaching. By the late 19th century, there were about 70 left. These were protected by a hunting ban, and by the establishment in 1908 of the Heath Hen Reserve, the population rapidly grew to almost 2,000. By the mid-1910s, observing the birds on their lekking grounds had become something of a tourist attraction.
The 1916 nesting season was a disastrous series of stochastic events that ultimately led the species to its final decline. In 1916, a fire spread across approximately one-third of the island, killing about 80% of the heath hen population. The following winter was harsh, and goshawks began moving into the island, further reducing the heath hens' numbers. The remaining population of heath hens had a significantly male biased sex-ratio, leading to further complications in the upcoming years. Captive breeding efforts were attempted, but some surviving males had undeveloped testes, either from an inadequate diet or because of captive-breeding practices. The species consequently faced great difficulty in resisting population shocks, such as epidemics of disease and harsh winters.
Although the effort to save the heath hen from extinction was ultimately unsuccessful, it paved the way for conservation of other species. The establishment of the reserve on the open shrubland of what was then called the Great Plain in the vineyard may have accelerated the heath hen's extinction. Fires were a normal part of the environment, but with the attempt to suppress fires instead of enforcing ecological succession with controlled burns, open habitat quality decreased and undergrowth accumulated until a normally limited fire would have disastrous consequences as it did in 1916.
There are also research projects aiming at the de-extinction of the heath hen using DNA from preserved cells as a basis for restructuring the DNA of greater prairie-chickens, particularly by an American non-profit organization called Revive & Restore.

ART 101
From up above, to down below, from the right, to the left, from far beyond, to center stage – illustrations can capture a range of three dimensional space in a variety of unique angles. How we position the metaphorical "camera" allows us to set up both our focal points, subjects, and environments.
Hi all, Shroom here! Let’s talk about the winding and creative ways we can tilt the angles of our canvases. It’s time to gain some Perspective!
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
Now, there’s a fair bit of variety when it comes to perspectives and how one goes about setting it up. For now, however, we’ll focus on four key examples and the structure of each.
To understand perspective we have to first understand what horizon lines and vanishing points are.
The former is pretty self explanatory. A horizon line is where an artist sets the separation of the ground and the sky. This can lie, stretching from left to right, in the middle of the canvas, high up, or low to the bottom edge. Some illustrations even have the horizon line defined outside the borders of the canvas itself!
Regardless of where we choose to place our horizon lines, vanishing points will exist along them. A vanishing point is a point on the horizon line that acts as the anchor for receding lines that will define the perspective of a work.
Receding lines? What are those?
Simple, these lines are drawn from the vanishing point outwards or vice versa. You can see them in certain drawing programs under “drawing guides” or a similar assistant function. For me, I dabble in Procreate, so it’ll be our main visual shorthand for perspective in this lesson.
Now, let's look at those receding lines.
Here we can easily see a simple perspective setup. Our vanishing point is placed relatively at the center point of the horizon line, said horizon is slightly below the midpoint of the canvas, and our receding lines all draw toward or expand from the vanishing point.
This is an example of One Point Perspective. Which is a perspective setup in which there is only one vanishing point.
We can better visualize this if we start throwing boxes around. If we place three simple boxes we can start to see how all these elements of perspective give us depth. Each of the boxes’ edges are pulled backwards, but distinctly with respect to the receding lines defined earlier.
You’ll also notice that these boxes are front-facing. So, what if we put one at an angle? Well, then you’d get something called Two Point Perspective.
Here, there are two distinct vanishing points that lie on the horizon line. They can be adjusted and placed closer or farther apart depending on preference. One might even extend so far it ends up past the bounds of the canvas. (As alluded to before). Two Point Perspective is a nice and easy way to create depth in environments. A common use I always see is when someone is drawing a street corner. Where either vanishing point extends backwards to showcase the length and liveliness of the street.
But, presuppose, one might wish to see from up above or down below. That is where we get Three Point Perspective!
Here, the third point can extend far below the canvas or far above it. Or in our case, all the vanishing points are outside the bounds of the canvas. What’s important to note is that the third vanishing point that defines the top or bottom plane of a subject is removed from the horizon line altogether.
These three are the basics in our arsenal of Perspective. Each one can help define certain aspects of our focal points or subjects better than others. So, experiment! Practice with each until you find which ones suit your illustrations best.
Of course, a simple way to practice is to do what we’ve just done. Define your perspective: be that One Point, Two Point, or Three Point. Then start drawing boxes! Or shapes of all kinds to get used to the way each of these visuals bend or shift around at these angles.
But, I did say I’d introduce you to four and we’ve only seen three thus far. That’s because the fourth kind of breaks a few rules. This is Fisheye Lens Perspective:
Here, well, what happened here? The main difference is that a Fisheye Lens Perspective doesn’t have rigid receding lines like we’ve seen thus far. This time around the receding lines bend and curve as they are drawn to or reach out from the vanishing points. That curve follows through to our subjects whose forms’ bend and shift in accordance to the perspective lines.
It takes a second to set up, but can often yield some pretty fun and creative results!

Are you ready to learn about all the furry conventions and events happening online, around the world, and in your neck of the woods? Well, I’m ready to tell you about them, so let’s get started!
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
Continuing from last month, Furry Blacklight starts October 30 and runs through November 3. The Hilton Paris Charles De Gaulle in Tremblay-en-France welcomes furry fans back for the twelfth iteration of this yearly French furcon. Meet furry friends under the neon lights and Ride the Retro Wave - that’s the theme for this year’s convention! Whether you’re into learning how to VJ, watching (or participating in) fursuit dances, improv, or meeting up with like-minded furry subgroups, the schedule offers something for everyone. Last year’s celebrated tattoo parlor will return to the FBL Dealer’s Den, along with nearly 80 other purveyors spread across their regular and After Dark Dealer’s Dens. You must be 18 years or older to attend FBL. At press time, FBL has already hit their attendance cap of 800, so if you missed pre-registration, you’re sadly out of luck - but there’s always next year!

Everyone’s favorite USA-based Halloween furry convention, Furpocalypse, fittingly starts Thursday, October 31 this year and continues through Sunday, November 4. Always a frightfully good time, their theme for 2024 is Astrophobia. 2024’s iteration will take place at the Armon Hotel & Conference Stamford in Stamford, Connecticut, USA. Take your experience to the next level by participating in hotel-wide door-to-door trick-or-treating, fun no matter which side of the candy basket you’re on! A charity auction and raffle will be held to benefit Q Plus, a Connecticut nonprofit dedicated to uplifting and empowering queer youth. Peri Pendrake and HorrorHippies, the two artist Guests of Honor this year, will be introduced at Opening Ceremonies to crown the surprise Furpocalypse Guest Host. Furpoc has historically featured a masquerade, fursuit parade and group picture, dance competition, fursuit games, nightly dances with DJs, art show, and last howl afterparty. Of course, no Halloween con is complete without a costume competition! All costumed attendees of Furpoc are welcome to enter, though fursuits alone don’t count and suiters will have to wear a costume over their fursuits.

PAWCon is bringing back underPAW, an 18+ space for exploring freedom of interests, which is sure to be lots of fun. Other programming will include, among other events, a snack social, LAN party, Greek line dancing, sticker swap, and even a talk about how to navigate the US “Paw-stal” System. At the time of writing, PAWCon had still not announced their 2024 charity partner, so be sure to follow them on social media for updates. Pre-registration closed in October, though day passes and weekend passes will be available for purchase at the door.

After a restructure, FurcoNZ is holding its first hotel event this year from Friday, November 22, to Sunday, November 24 at the Holiday Inn Auckland Airport in Auckland, New Zealand. Animals of all shapes and sizes convene at events like this, so what better choice for a con theme than Safari? Be sure to keep an eye on FurcoNZ’s socials for even more announcements as they come, including news of the con’s chosen Guest of Honor and charity partner. The annual furry caravan park event, Furcation, has a new home this year at Sandford Holiday Park, Poole, Dorset, UK. Keep your wits about you Friday, November 22 to Monday, November 25, and try not to get scared at the con themed Tails of Terror! Furcation’s website lists amenities included with each accommodation. Expect a dealer’s den, nightly dances with guest DJs, dance competition, gaming, and attendee-led panels during your vacation stay. One great thing about Furcation is that events are equally open to all, which means that attendees can join in everything, even the group photo and games, without a fursuit. A charity auction and meet & greet will be held to benefit Ferne Animal Sanctuary, which caters to a wide range of animals from horses and goats to cats and dogs. Attendees must be 18 years or older and present a valid photo ID.

FURRY QUOTE
Howdy, all! Tide again. I hope everyone is doing as well as you can. Given recent events, I thought that this week I would talk about adversity, overcoming it, and growing from it. In my search for a quote, I found a very fitting one from renowned musician, LL Cool J.
“When adversity strikes, that's when you have to be the most calm. Take a step back, stay strong, stay grounded and press on.”
When adversity strikes, its so easy to catastrophize and think that it is the end of life as you know it, but like LL Cool J says, that is when you have to be the most calm. Think rationally about your next course of action and then take it. Whatever that means for you, let yourself be calm. Do not be swept up in emotions or herd mentality, Do not just let yourself panic and shut down, that is helping no one, especially yourself. Take that deep breath first. Be calm. Get a view of the whole picture. And then, keep moving forward. Yes, things are going to change. Whether you like those changes or not does not matter. Evaluate how those things will affect you and the people you care about and act accordingly. If you act foolishly, you are likely to hurt not only yourself, but those you care for.
So like Cool J says, stay grounded and press on. We can’t change what has happened, but we can change our actions moving forward. If you can’t control the cards you’ve been dealt you can at least control how you play them. Sometimes, even with bad cards, if you play them right you can still win big. Will it be harder? Yeah, of course, but that shouldn’t stop you from trying. Choosing to do nothing is still choosing to do something. So since you have to do something, choose something you can look back on and be proud of. Choose something the people you care about can look at and be proud of. Choose something that the future generations can be proud of. Show the world that we are not our circumstances.
I know a lot of people are fearful, given recent events, but let those emotions be a drive to act rather than cause you to freeze. Be calm, don’t act impulsively, but use your fear of what could happen to help direct what will happen. Remember, despite how it may feel it isn’t the end of the world, and even if it is, well… we are humans, adapting is what we do.
⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰
That’s it for this week’s Furry Quote. Now that you’re all caught up, think about what your next steps are. Whether you are happy with the future direction or not think about how you can direct your life in a way that you want and maybe even how you can influence things on a broader scale if you feel called too. Let every moment be a learning opportunity. And let every learning opportunity call our hearts to act.
