ART CORNER

Good timezone! You’ve got me, Purple, for Art Corner this week. I have a couple of pieces that struck my fancy that I’d like to share with you.

A painting of a red fox with white eyes surrounded by green grapes and grapevines.

Piece by @JVentureArt.

Aesop’s Fables are, in my opinion, a staple of fantasy and anthropomorphic animal media. JV’s painting alludes to a classic tale of a fox which, upon being unable to reach grapes high on a vine, copes by deciding that they must be sour and he never wanted them anyway. The visible brushstrokes in this piece elevate the visual appeal, giving the fur a tangible softness. Additionally, the blank eyes somewhat resemble the surrounding grapes, contributing both an eerie feel and a connection between the figure and the background props. Curves of the tail, vines, and fur, as well as the dynamic pose, create movement and life. It’s as though the fox is frozen in time in a jump for the grapes, wrapped up in what he won’t admit he wants. I’m very drawn to this piece because of its semi-realism; it very well combines details and textures of realism with a non-photorealistic style. This is the type of art that I would be likely to choose to decorate my space with - perhaps on my bookshelf, given the literary roots of the work!

⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰

A variety of anthropomorphic animals are gathered in the woods at a campground, with a full moon overhead and fireflies between them.

Piece by @peripendrake.

Pendrake manages to pack so much action and detail into this piece! Space created through perspective allows a viewer to look far into this scene, clear to the bonfire and lake, where more characters can be found playing. A huge full moon overhead draws attention back there, too! By using light-colored outlines in addition to black outlines, characters are more easily defined, and it creates a charming sticker-book effect. Shading is mostly created through color harmony, with characters being “dulled” in a sense to match the nighttime setting. Each character is drawn in a unique, lively pose, making it really feel like this is a snapshot from a summer camp. I love looking at this piece because I see something new every time!

⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰

The next piece I will be featuring is a little different - as opposed to a member of the community in the modern day, I’d like to take a small detour to art history!

A rabbit leaping next to a monkey figure seemingly wearing oriental clothing.

Jade Rabbit, a ukiyo-e print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi in October 1889. Retrieved from the Minneapolis Institute of Art.

The two figures in this piece are the Moon Rabbit and Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, characters from the Chinese novel Journey to the West. Though I’m not very well-versed in the plot of the novel, I feel a lot of excitement when I find anthropomorphic art in historical settings, even if it is not quite what we would think of today. However, when one recalls that the basis of anthropomorphism is animals acting like humans… There has been much of this throughout history! While the Moon Rabbit looks much like a standard rabbit, Sun Wukong–the main focus of my art analysis–has more humanoid elements. He is drawn bipedal, like one would imagine modern furries, and he wears robes and jewelry while wielding a staff. His pose conveys a lot of movement, energy, and power. The color palette is generally limited in these prints, as each color required a separate wood block, but it is still used intelligently to create contrast with the clothes and draw attention to important areas, such as Sun’s face and staff. Overall, I wanted to share this work because I feel it is important to recognize how humans have always been telling stories about and depicting animals acting like us. It brings me joy to see this kind of early “furry” art, long before there was a word or real community for our hobby.

⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰

Thank you for taking time to view, read about, and appreciate these beautiful pieces from some of the talented artists in our fandom, as well as a piece of my art history treasure chest!

If you’re an artist who would like a chance to be featured, tag your work with #artcorner and #furryweekly on Twitter, Instagram, or Tumblr. You can also submit your work to myself or my co-host Jordan on Discord at jordanc2404. We also have a submissions form you can fill out, or you can email us at furryweeklysubmissions@gmail.com to tell us you’d like to be featured!

FURSUIT FOCUS

How’s it going everyone? My name is Yeshua and I’m real excited to bring you a new Fursuit Focus segment! If it’s your first time reading, this is where we get to know some of the fursuiters in the fandom! It’s always a fun time hearing from fursuiters about their experiences so I hope you’ll stick around!

This time I’m happy to introduce Orion!

We’ve got a pretty neat fox to talk about today! Looking at his design, Orion has the appearance of a brown fox with just two other main colors that we’ll get to in just a second. Of course, brown is the dominant color; we see that throughout the body in two different shades: a dark brown and a lighter, brighter brown. The two different shades of brown seem to be almost evenly split, with the darker brown covering the face, and parts of the waist and back, while the lighter brown is on the arms, part of the legs, and even a bit around the dark brown on the face. Then we got the white fur on the chest, thighs, and the hair and cheek fluff, complementing the browns nicely. While this combination by itself looks great, the teal – seen on the paw pads, nose, eyes, and inside the ears – really completes Orion’s look! It’s a little hard to see from some photos, but if you look closely, you’ll also notice the constellations on the paw pads and the inside of the ears; very appropriate for a fox named Orion! It’s a subtle, but awesome detail that really stands out! So now that we know the fursuit, what does Orion get up to?

Orion has a good bit of chaotic energy, and I say that because he likes to be mischievous! When he fursuits, Orion does enjoy chill stuff like roaming around, chatting, and taking photos with others – “but mostly being an absolute gremlin!” His words, not mine! Whenever he’s with friends, and really just about anyone, his favorite move is to photobomb them if he has the chance: “ … I will one hundred percent photobomb them with no remorse, and I’ll do it more than once … photobombing is an amazing way to get some delayed reactions!” So just know, your pics are never safe from photobombing if Orion is around!

Going back to generally interacting in fursuit, Orion definitely enjoys just hanging out with others. He says he is naturally shy, but fursuiting helps him be more outgoing, especially since it usually causes others to go to him instead of him having to go to others. Plus, as he said earlier, he likes photobombing people to get reactions out of them, which is something he likes to do while fursuiting: “I love being a social animal!”

Like most fursuiters, Orion likes taking photos, but also enjoys making videos. He likes to make short clips and reels with friends, usually doing some sort of shenanigans. His interest in making videos actually started after Astra asked Orion to help him film videos, and as he did, Orion enjoyed it so much that he started doing it too! If you do just a quick scroll through his social media, it won’t be hard to find some of his short videos!

As for photography, Orion takes fursuit photos both indoors and outdoors, although he really likes posing outdoors because he feels more free to do all kinds of poses and angles compared to what can be done inside. Not only that, but he likes how natural sunlight makes his suit stand out more! Still, Orion also likes to pose in convention spaces because of the unexpected silliness that may be caught at any time; a thought that definitely reflects his chaotic energy I mentioned earlier, don’t you think?

Something that’s interesting is that Orion’s attitude for taking photos has actually changed quite a bit! At first, he used to only take fursuit photos to keep in touch with his maker and fursuit family. This came after he watched the documentary about the furry fandom, aptly-named “The Fandom.” In it, he saw a maker who explained that some of the suits they make just disappear after getting to their owners. That’s why Orion made a Twitter account in the first place, “so [my maker] could see [the fursuit] live on.” So he did that until Astra first asked Orion for help filming, which is when he slowly started sharing more and more fursuiting content!

Orion’s road to fursuiting is also quite an interesting story. In the summer of 2023 he felt lonely and had a very slow social life. Eventually, he decided he wanted to change this, so he planned to start interacting in the fandom. He gave himself one year to go to furry meets, conventions, and maybe, just maybe get a fursuit if he felt like he wanted one. You can probably guess how that went based on what you’ve already read about Orion, but I’ll let him explain what happened soon after starting that one-year venture into the fandom: “Fast forward three weeks later, and I was the owner of my partial suit!” Quite a turn that story took, huh? But a good, and kinda funny turn that was!

Orion saw the suit online and fortunately for him, it was pretty much perfect, saying that it ticked all the boxes and even had some extra stuff that he liked, specifically, the constellations in the ears and paws! After this, Orion really went all in; he decided he had to go to at least one convention now that he had a fursuit, and he settled on Megaplex in Orlando, Florida – 2,000 miles away from his home in Montreal! Orion liked fursuiting so much, just three months after Megaplex, he commissioned DeLeon Fursuits for his full suit. What a busy season that must have been, and Orion has the perfect TLDR for it: “So, in one month, I went from never having spoken to another furry, to owning a partial, to going to a convention abroad!”

Orion has only been fursuiting for just over a year as of writing this, and it’s clear he’s done a ton of stuff in a short amount of time, but there’s definitely more ahead for him. I’m sure he’s going to continue posting lots of fursuit photos and silly videos, but there are also a few things he’s got in mind that he’d love to do. One of those is going alpine skiing in suit! I personally love this idea because it’s in the realm of winter sports that I find very interesting! Previously, I heard from another fursuiter who said he wanted to go snowboarding in fursuit, which I would love to do myself, but alpine skiing is another cool winter activity that I hope Orion does get to do; he says he’d love to get some good photos while doing that! Something else he wants to do is go to an organized furmeet, like at an arcade or bowling! Having done both myself, and now knowing a bit about Orion, I have a feeling he would really enjoy events like that!

Overall, it’s pretty easy to see how much Orion enjoys fursuiting, especially with how quickly he embraced it after starting to fully interact in the fandom. I’ll let him share his thoughts on fursuiting as a whole as we finish the segment:

“Fursuiting truly is an amazing way to meet new people. It is true that it makes the fandom pay-to-win, the cuter the suit, the more attention to get, but it is also a fantastic way to overcome shyness or some social anxiety. I love making people smile, both at furry and non furry events, and while it is physically exhausting, it brings out the most gremlin-y and fun-having sides of me!"

⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰

This was such a fun segment to write! Orion is a wonderful fursuiter and I hope you all enjoyed reading about him as much as I enjoyed writing about him! I definitely encourage you to give him a follow on one of his social media if you liked what you saw from him! He just might become your next favorite fursuiter!

We’re always looking for fluffy individuals to show off here, so if you’re a fursuiter and would like to be featured, just use the tags #furryweekly and #fursuitfocus when you post your fursuit photos and videos to social media! You can also reach out to me or our usual host, tahlmorra, or – preferably – you can email us at furryweeklysubmissions@gmail.com to tell us you’d like to be featured! We also have a Submissions Form you can fill out if you prefer!

If you’ve read up to here, thanks so much! I’ve been Yeshua, and it’s been a pleasure bringing you the Fursuit Focus segment! Until next time, take care!

SPECIES SPOTLIGHT

Hello readers, and welcome back to an exciting week of Species Spotlight! This is Danielle making a return as a guest host.

Before we put the spotlight on this week’s original species, I wish to let all of you know that we’re still looking to recruit more hosts for this segment. If you enjoy diving into species lore and/or find original species fascinating, then this might be for you! Feel free to message our boss, Yeshua, or our HR, Carkas, if you’re interested in hosting Species Spotlight.

This week we’re getting heroic with a cyborg species called Rabbizorg by Lordyanyu!

Meet the mascots, Macaron (left) and Matcha (right)!

The first Rabbizorg mascots ever created.

Macaron and Matcha are the first Rabbizorgs ever created by Lordyanyu and are both very powerful heroes.

What are Rabbizorgs?

Rabbizorgs are an intelligent cyborg species of anthro rabbits (rabbigins) from a planet called Karot.

A brief Rabbizorg guide.

Source

Lore and History

Planet Karot is where rabbigins call home and where Rabbizorgs live among them in the east Kaaroot continent. Throughout history they migrate around planet Karot, evolving from tribes to civilizations. When Rabbizorg civilization reached industrial age, the more developed countries started to expand their empires, colonizing other civilizations for land and resources, which soon led to wars. As the war escalated, it became worldwide and known as the Karot global war. During the global war, military technology advanced rapidly as the demands of them increased. With the purpose of building ultimate weapons, a secret super soldier project was carried out by the Pawtro empire military research center. The project led to the creation of Rabbizorgs, the perfect combination of organic and mechanical life.

Modern continents and countries of planet Karot.

The first batch of Rabbizorgs are produced from rabbigin soldiers who willingly and sometimes unwillingly had their body modified by biomechanic operation for the Rabbizorg project. Later, the Pawtro scientists found a way to combine nano tech and genetic engineering, allowing them to mass produce Rabbizorgs with the help of cloning tech. Rabbizorgs are fierce fighters on the battlefield. They obeyed every order like machines, and in fact, their free will was suppressed by a built-in protocol so the Pawtro empire military could use them as tools. The forces against the Pawtro empire were at the brink of total defeat, losing one battle after another, but soon, the technology was leaked by a Pawtro scientist who didn't want planet Karot dominated by the Pawtro empire. With the help of the leaked blueprint, the forces of good managed to override the free will suppression protocol by creating a virus.

After Rabbizorgs wake up from the mind suppression, they experience free will for the first time and stop fighting against the forces of good. Without their Rabbizorg army, the Pawtro empire and their alliance were eventually defeated and replaced by new political systems. After the global war ended, the Rabbizorgs tried to fit in with the peaceful society, but it wasn’t easy for them because the world viewed them as war machines, which they were at one point. Some Rabbizorgs volunteered to help the citizens with their superpowers, becoming the first Rabbizorg heroes. Little by little, they gained their trust, and in the modern timeline, the Rabbizorg heroes have become a global alliance. The new age of peace is in great progress, but wherever there is light, there is darkness. New enemies and threats are lurking in the shadowy corners of Karot. Can our Rabbizorg heroes protect the world from evil forces?

WRITING 101

Mellow ballroom music plays over the hotel’s speaker system. Posters showcasing hand-crafted Art Deco designs plaster the grand hallways. For a historic hotel and convention center, the interior has certainly been brought up to modern comfort and luxury expectations. And the swanky decorations help throw the convention space back into a time period pre-existing its own conception: The Rawring 20’s!

Amongst these hallways and gathering rooms roam countless creatures—wolves, foxes, cats, deer, bovines, and even scaly dragons. The variety is endless. Two particular convention-goers join the throngs: A familiar pinkish-red snake, carrying the trusty Camera and dressed for the occasion in a suit and tie; and a puma, tan fur and purple head of hair brushed clean.

“Are you having fun?” asks Phoenix. He briefly turns around, Camera in hand, to capture a long shot down the hallway. His height affords him a great vantage point over everyone else’s heads.

“For sure,” says Yeshua. “But the bigger question if if you are having fun.”

“I think so. After driving all day Thursday, and then driving three more hours to get here yesterday.... It’s certainly nice to be able to walk around for a change. I’ve never been to Mississippi, either.”

“And for your first convention? What do you think?”

“It’s… very different. I don’t see this kind of thing much but that’s why I like it.”

“I respect you for wearing a suit all day. I’d die of heat stroke.”

Phoenix chuckles at his friend’s remark. “Hey… I’ll take any excuse to dress up.”

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

Hello friends, and welcome to Furry Weekly’s Writing 101! I’m Bryce Griffin, here to get all you writers out there the inside scoop on literature tips and tricks. Let’s get started!

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

Let’s talk about: Don’t Kick Yourself

Let's talk about:

Don’t Kick Yourself

Today’s topic piggybacks off of last week’s discussion about taking a break. There will be moments where nothing seems to feel “right.” After anything from minor edits to major reworks, you may still feel like you haven’t zeroed in on a satisfying end result. It’s normal to not be happy with your hard work, and that’s perfectly okay.

Don’t kick yourself. It’s easy to get down on yourself if your writing isn’t turning out how you imagine.

These words apply to many different aspects of our everyday lives, but they especially apply to any creative process. Your first attempt will never be your best attempt. This is totally normal. Our first attempts may shake out to be pretty rough around the edges, so we’ll revisit our work and make edits to try and smooth out those rough spots. But what if, after countless revisits and a significant time investment, you still can’t get it figured out?

It’s perfectly okay. If the second, fifth, tenth, or twentieth attempt doesn’t work, then don’t lose hope! Design is an iterative process. It may take several attempts to even zero in on the general “feel” of what you’re going for. It may take another few detailed passes through your writing to not only fine-tune the story and characters, but to also get the grammar exactly how you want.

Again, you very likely won’t set the world on fire right out of the gate, even if you’re a seasoned writer. I’ve been writing consistently for ten years and I still have trouble getting certain aspects of my work in a satisfactory state. Don’t kick yourself if you run into trouble like this. Take a step back if needed, keep your head up, and have another go at whatever is giving you trouble.

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

Want me to take a look at your work? Got a general question for Writing 101? Just shoot me a message on Discord! I’ll be happy to answer any writing questions or even critique your work.

Thanks for joining me in Furry Weekly’s Writing 101. I hope you enjoy the rest of the magazine!

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

After attending several panels (some of which required Phoenix to stow the Camera), the snake and puma take a break from the action. They plop down into two plush wingback chairs to relieve their muscles. A steady stream of anthros cruise through the hall, all talking and laughing with their fellow convention-goers.

“I have to say that this isn’t what I expected,” says Phoenix, pulling the Camera out of his backpack again. “But I’m having a lot of fun. Thanks for coming along.”

“No, no, no,” says Yeshua, leaning forward to see the snake better. He smiles and wags one of his clawed fingers. “Thank you for the suggestion!”

“You were thinking about going anyway,” pointed out Phoenix.

“Sure, but it’s always better fun attending with better friends.”

Phoenix smiles. His hood folds down his neck, clearly flattered at the puma’s compliment.

At that moment, a family of three—a tall German Shepherd and what must have been his two young sons—stop nearby, hovering and talking amongst themselves.

“He’s a puma!” says the father to the older of his curious sons. “I bet he’ll let you take some pictures with him.”

The little Shepherd approaches, clearly bashful. “Excuse me, sir? Can we take pictures with you?”

“Oh—oh of course!” says Yeshua, clearly surprised. He stands out of his chair as the two boys approach. Yeshua squats to their level so that they can all be in frame. While the father takes out his phone, Phoenix lifts up the Camera to begin filming the scene. He looks through the eyepiece and grins at his friend, capturing the heartwarming exchange.

FURRY QUOTE

Howdy, all! Tide again. I hope everyone is doing well. This week I decided to pick a quote about something I am extremely passionate about. FOOD! So here is a quote from the legendary Guy Fieri.

A quote by Guy Fieri.

”Cooking is all about people. Food is maybe the only universal thing that really has the power to bring everyone together no matter what culture. Everywhere around the world, people eat together.”

~Guy Fieri

Oftentimes people just think of food as something to not be hungry and make it through the day with energy or as a tool to build muscle, but food can be so much more. Food has been bringing people together since the dawn of humankind and for me, there is no greater joy and sign of trust than to share food with someone, because food not only feeds our bodies, but our souls. It nourishes our spirit and unifies us with others and as we live in a world where it seems that people cannot, or choose to not, understand others, remember that we all eat food. It may look vastly different. It may be spicy or creamy or salty or sweet, but we all eat. So let what you are eating have significance, don’t let a short lunch break stop you from savoring and enjoying a sustaining meal, but above all, use food as an opportunity to meet other cultures. If you can’t go out and travel the world to learn about different cultures, go to local restaurants, or look up recipes and learn about the history of foods and why they are the way they are. Above all share that meal with someone. Have a conversation. Use it as an opportunity to see people or meet people you never would otherwise. Use it to cross bridges.

The world likes to shove our differences in our face, be that religion or sexuality or race. But, perhaps, over a nice bowl or plate of food, across the table from a close friend or a total stranger, we can be reminded that perhaps we have way more in common than we might think. Maybe food is just the conversation starter that we need for a better future, whatever “better” may mean. If we cannot embrace different cultures in any other way we can at least embrace their food and their company. Because research has actually shown that with a full stomach and satisfied soul people are more receptive to kindness, more open to forgiveness, and more likely to remember that everyone is human.

⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰

That’s it for this week’s Furry Quote. Now that you’re all caught up, I hope I’ve inspired you to go out and try new foods, whether you cook them yourselves or go to a restaurant, try something new, something you might consider weird. Who knows, you might just find it incredibly tasty.

Do you have a quote or topic you’d like us to discuss next? Feel free to submit content by emailing furryweeklysubmissions@gmail.com, or you can directly message me on Instagram.

Thanks for stopping by, and until next time.

All the best,
-Tide
