FURSUIT FOCUS

Hey you all! Welcome back to another edition of Fursuit Focus! I’m Yeshua and I’m happy to bring you another one of these segments! I don’t want to waste any time so let’s meet today’s fluffy individual!

Lumi takes center stage with a variety of fursuits to share!

You read that right, I said fursuits plural! Lumi has three suits we’ll be looking at today, but more on that later. For now, we’ll focus on her main suit, which is of her fursona, Lumi! Lumi is an arctic fox and stands out quite a bit, huh? Her color palette boasts some lovely colors that fit quite well! The sort of aqua or teal fur dominates Lumi’s design, and is balanced nicely with the tan and red fur; plus, the red eyes and paw pads are a great touch! The patterns on the face are also neat! The tan and teal fur somewhat divide Lumi’s face, but you’ve also got the red markings and the four-pointed star on her forehead; it all comes together nicely! Plus, the fursuit maker not only did great with the fur and markings, but all the anatomy of the suit is spot on! You’ve got the short snout, medium-sized ears, and fluffy tail, all classic features of an arctic fox.

Lumi’s favorite things to do as a fursuiter are pretty straightforward, and it all involves being in front of the camera! She enjoys taking photos with friends, or by herself in any place that looks pretty! As of writing this segment in early July, just last week Lumi went to the beach and you bet she took advantage of the scenery for some photos! Lumi loves fursuit photos outdoors and in nature, which you will notice right away if you browse through her social media. She says she wants to take some photos with fall leaves at some point, so don’t be surprised if you see some photos of Lumi in the forest during the fall! Lumi also likes going to conventions and getting photos with other fursuiters as well as making TikToks with them, and just hanging out in general! Regardless of what she does while fursuiting, it’s not hard to tell Lumi has a ton of fun!

Lumi’s path to getting a fursuit has been somewhat long, but once she jumped into the fursuiting scene, it’s been full steam ahead! In January of 2024 she made the decision to commission her own suit. She ended up buying her first, and main suit, Lumi! “... just the way she had that cute look in her eyes and seeing her big smile, I knew I had to have her!”

As I mentioned at the beginning, Lumi has several fursuits; the second suit she got was a kemono-styled dragon called Cherrie! Lumi says she came across Cherrie in a fursuit-selling group on Facebook. Cherrie’s huge paws as well as her cheery and soft appearance are what sold Lumi on getting her. Lumi’s third suit is Luna, an arctic dragon and wolf hybrid. She actually experimented with Luna’s look, adding sparkly eyelids to her appearance, which she’s very happy with! “... I thought [the eyelids] would bring her whole look together and she looks even more sassy and sparkly now with her shiny eyelids and lashes!” Something else Lumi enjoys about Luna’s head is her moveable jaw! She takes full advantage of that feature, making videos where it looks like Luna’s talking pretty seamlessly!

As you can tell, Lumi is pretty active in the fursuiting scene, but she’s not slowing down any time soon! Aside from taking photos and making videos, there’s something she hasn’t done that she’s really thinking about: participating in a dance competition! Lumi loves dancing; she has always enjoyed doing it and nowadays, she really likes dancing on VRChat! Lumi likes freestyle dancing so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see her enter a dance competition at a convention, which is exactly what she says she’d like to do soon!

There’s still plenty ahead for Lumi as a fursuiter, but as she continues to enjoy this hobby, she also wants to make sure other furs make the most of their experience in the fandom. I’ll leave you all with her final remarks as she talked about her fursuiting experiences:

” … please do not let any hate comments, whether [in real life] or online bring you down to stop doing what you love. No one else’s opinion should matter because at the end of the day you and your hobby is amazing regardless of what people say … you’re doing great!”

⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰

Thanks for reading, that’s all the time we have for this week’s installment of Fursuit Focus! I had a lot of fun telling you about Lumi, and I hope you enjoyed getting to know her through her experiences in the fursuiting scene! Be sure to give her a follow If you want to keep up with her fursuiting adventures!

We’re always looking for fursuiters to showcase here, so if you want to show up here, just use the tags #furryweekly and #fursuitfocus when you post your fursuit photos and videos to social media! You can also reach out to me or our usual host, tahlmorra, or you can email us at furryweeklysubmissions@gmail.com to tell us you’d like to be featured! We also have a Submissions Form you can fill out if you prefer!

Once again thanks so much for reading today’s segment. I’ve been Yeshua, and I hope to see you next time! Until then, take care!

SPECIES SPOTLIGHT

Hello readers, and welcome back to an exciting week of Species Spotlight! This is Danielle making a return as a guest host.

Before we put the spotlight on this week’s original species, I wish to let all of you know that we’re still looking to recruit more hosts for this segment. If you enjoy diving into species lore and/or find original species fascinating, then this might be for you! Feel free to message our boss, Yeshua, or our HR, Carkas, if you’re interested in hosting Species Spotlight.

What’s that flying in the sky? It’s a species called Planepups by dark12823!

A cover image of two Planepups.

What are Planepups?

Planepups are a species of biomechanical living beings that can take the shape and structure of an Airbus, Boeing, and other aircraft manufacturers. If you are a fan of airplanes and aviation bundled with cuteness, then this is a species for you!

Behavior and Characteristics

Most Planepups are very friendly, trustworthy, powerful, and provide steady landings with their incredible smooth movements. They can act like a happy, playful puppy but know when to act professional. Since Planepups have the structure of various aircrafts, this allows them to have different types of noses and tails. What’s fascinating is how they do not need to charge or require fuel. Planepups are mainly developed to lower the usage of fuel and to give everyone a new travel experience. They can also develop their own personalities and memorize the routes of their destinations while also feeling emotions and forming bonds.

Planepups do not have a sex or gender, but they have the capability to change their tones and voices to sound more or less masculine and feminine. They do not have sexual interactions with another Planepup and do not have reproductive organs. They actually have no organs at all.

Planepups can range from the size of a Starr Bumblebee to the size of an Antonov An-225 Mriya, but because they have legs, they can be a lot taller than the average airplane. Their windshields are black with computer-like eyes that can be any color and must have any type of canine ears.

The windows on a Planepup are only located on the body because they must use their tail to help balance in the sky. Their paw pads are flat under each paw but can glow brightly and give off light gun signals. Inside of a Planepup is a layout that’s up to you. Your Planepup can be any color, design, and represent any airline.

Types of Planepups

Aluminum

The aluminum type of pup is made up of biomechanical pure aluminum. Because they are made with this, they cannot feel cold and can be in any part of the globe for extended periods of time. These Planepups strictly work with more intense routes and obstacles.

Furry

Furry Planepups are mainly located in warmer parts of the globe. They have fur that opens their cells so when flying, they are kept cool and comfortable. Lots of these Planepups carry passengers at the airport, work with cargo, are “pet planes”, and help with crops and farm work depending on their size.

Other Information

No pilot is needed to control a Planepup. They have the ability to communicate with air traffic control in any international language.

If their engines fail for whatever reason, they can still run or swim up to 250 mph. When flying, their speed can increase to the average speed of an aircraft, which is 480-600 mph.

Due to Planepups being biomechanical, these special carriers do not need to eat or drink to stay alive.

Planepups are able to live forever unless they crash due to unfortunate accidents, engine failure, or excessive overheating. In very rare cases, their system was hijacked.

Obtaining a Planepup

Planepups are a semi-open species, which means you’re welcome to create your own within reason. Please be sure to give credit to dark12823 for the species.

A free to use Planepup base by dark12823.

Looking to make your own Planepup? Feel free to check out this free base by dark12823 here.

If you have any questions about the species, feel free to reach out to her on Discord or Telegram: dark12823.

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

Thank you for tuning in to this week of Species Spotlight! I hope you enjoyed learning about the Planepups today. There are plenty of creative original species out there, and we’ll be sure to hunt them down.

Ready for us to explore your original species? Feel free to fill out this form if interested. You can also submit content by emailing furryweeklysubmissions@gmail.com, or you can directly message me on any of my platforms.

As Coyote Peterson from Brave Wilderness says, stay wild, and we’ll see you on the next species adventure!

ANIMAL OF THE WEEK

Animal of the week is a segment where we highlight an animal that is really cool, cute, creepy, or just plain fascinating. There will be a coloring-page illustration for you all to print out and color in at home, as well as an adoptable character inspired by the animal of that week. The best part? All proceeds made by said adopt will be donated to conservation charities!

Whenever possible, we do symbolically adopt the animal, but only some animals have the privilege to have that as an option unfortunately; thus we collect extra funds to donate to many different species conservation charities, donate towards wildlife rehabilitation programs, or send funds to scientists so that they can research underappreciated animal species. Join us on this fun adventure, and I hope that you, too, will fall in love with these amazing animals!

We’re moving right along with the third part of our series on Geckos!

Geckos are small, mostly carnivorous lizards that have a wide distribution, found on every continent except Antarctica. Geckos are unique among lizards for their vocalizations, which differ from species to species. Unlike most lizards, geckos are usually nocturnal and have excellent night vision; their color vision in low light is 350 times more sensitive than human eyes. Many species are well known for their specialized toe pads, which enable them to grab and climb onto smooth and vertical surfaces, and even cross indoor ceilings with ease. Geckos are well known to people who live in warm regions of the world, where several species make their home inside human habitations. The Neo-Latin gekko and English 'gecko' stem from Indonesian-Malaysian gēkoq, it is a Malay word borrowed from Javanese, from tokek, which imitates the sounds that some species like Tokay gecko make.

This Week’s Species: Williams’ dwarf gecko (Lygodactylus williams)

Characteristics

Williams’ dwarf geckos are a brightly colored, critically endangered gecko species. Males are bright blue with heavy black throat stripes and visible preanal pores. Females range from brown or bronze to bright green, and have little to no black on the throat. Females can easily be confused with juvenile or socially suppressed males that are also green, sometimes with a bluish cast. The underside of both sexes is orange.

Fun Facts

A standout among modern breeders is Frank Payne (of Living Arts), who has gone on to produce nearly 1,000 Williams’ dwarf geckos through his home breeding project. They make an effort to breed species that are considered difficult or impossible in order to push the collective knowledge and experience further (and prevent illegal poaching). They publish and share freely all of their knowledge through their social media as well as publications such as Reptiles magazine.

Habitat

Williams’ dwarf gecko is only found in a total of 3 square miles from the Kimboza Forest, Ruvu Forest Reserve, Mbagalala and Muhalama. These are located at the foothills of the Uluguru Mountains in eastern Tanzania. In the wild, the gecko lives exclusively on the endemic screwpine, mostly in the leaf crown. It only lives on large trees, those with leaves more than 3 ft long. A single leaf crown will typically contain a single individual, or an adult male, an adult female, and juveniles. The two known sites outside protected areas are tiny: one consists of 14 Pandanus trees (the rest has been cleared for banana plantations) and the other is equally close to disappearing.

Diet

The Williams’ dwarf gecko eats small insects and drinks water from leaves. It is also fond of nectar.

Life Cycle

Colors of individuals vary according to mood and temperature. Males are territorial, and do not generally tolerate the presence of other males. Social gestures include lateral flattening, puffing out of the throat patch, head shaking and head bobbing, and tail-wagging. Males court females with lateral flattening, puffing out of the throat pouch, and head bobbing. Two to three weeks after copulation, the female lays a clutch of 1 or 2 pea-sized white, hard-shelled eggs which are glued to a surface in a secure, hidden location. Eggs hatch in 60 to 90 days.

Conservation

Collectors commonly cut down screwpine trees to reach the geckos living in the leaf crest, destroying the gecko's habitat. Many geckos are thought to die while being shipped to market. The pet trade is likely a worse threat than habitat loss. The gecko is now restricted to the forest in Tanzania and is at risk of extinction in the wild as the forests are cleared. Although trade in wild-caught turquoise day geckos is illegal, wild-caught geckos are commonly sold in pet shops. Illegally wild-caught specimens are often falsely promoted as captive-bred. Although it breeds in captivity, the young have specific care requirements, making large-scale breeding difficult. It is estimated that between December 2004 and July 2009, at least 32,310 to 42,610 geckos were taken by one collecting group, ~15% of the wild population at the time. A captive breeding project and studbook was initiated by EAZA-registered zoos in 2013. The gecko may not be kept or sold in the EU without documentation and permits, renewable every three years, and geckos must now be registered.

The tropical forest habitat is also shrinking and fragmenting. Neither of the Catchment Forest Reserves where it occurs is well-protected. The forest is seriously threatened by pet collectors, clearing for farmland, illegal logging, increasingly frequent fires, mining of rubies, tourmaline, rhodolite, gold and dolomite and limestone from outcrops on which the screwpines grow. Invasive trees such as Cedrela are also a threat. There is little forest left unaffected.

Here are some links to articles about the conservation of Williams’ dwarf gecko:

-Watching extinction happen: the dramatic population decline of the critically endangered Tanzanian Turquoise Dwarf Gecko, Lygodactylus williamsi

-The impact of the invasive tree Cedrela odorota on the Electric Blue Gecko (Lygodactylus williamsi) and its habitat (Pandanus rabaiensis) in Kimboza Forest Reserve, Tanzania

-Composition, distribution patterns, and conservation priority areas for the herpetofauna of the state of Ceará, northeastern Brazil

Adopt

All funds from this adopt will go to animal conservation. The goal for this month is to save up to help fund the care of Jasmine the leopard gecko from Barn Nature Center and symbolically adopt an ornate day gecko from Mauritian Wildlife. These two adoptions require a total of $120 and this adopt will be one of 4 total created to achieve this goal. It will be available for $30 at Shirogane Studios.

WRITING 101

July’s miserable weather refuses to relinquish its grip. The sun beats down on the urban office building so badly that the air conditioning struggles to keep up. The inside air, despite its comfortable temperature and humidity, had become all but oppressive. A familiar anthro snake, dressed smartly in his usual slacks and button-up shirt, can’t focus on the drafting work on his computer screen. He needs a break. Now.

Phoenix collects his phone and the now-trusty Camera, then abandons his workstation. It feels so good to stand and stretch his strained back. His fingers lock around the Camera and his arms stretch for the ceiling as his long tail arches upwards, nearly meeting the machine in his hands. He sighs briefly, then walks out of the office and descends the stairs to street level.

The outside air hits him like a wall. At two in the afternoon, the worst of the day’s weather lays on him like ten wet blankets. Moisture saturates the snake’s tongue as he briefly tastes the air. If he could sweat, he would have soaked through his shirt in an instant.

“Good lord…” he mutters, squinting from the intense sunlight.

Phoenix nearly turns around to head right back inside; but, he needs this fresh air, no matter how unpleasant. He briskly walks down the narrow brick sidewalk, Camera in his hand and doing his best to ignore the stifling air. Perhaps he could keep his mind off of the weather by thinking about something else?

“Writing 101… but what was this week’s topic?”

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

Hello friends, and welcome to Furry Weekly’s Writing 101! I’m Bryce Griffin, here to get all you writers out there the inside scoop on literature tips and tricks. Let’s get started!

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

Let’s talk about: Getting Unstuck

Let's talk about:

Getting Unstuck

A few issues ago, we discussed how to avoid writing yourself into a corner. This is a situation where characters enter a situation they cannot logically exit. This is a more concrete definition of “getting stuck.” Today, however, we’ll look at the more abstract definition of getting stuck and how to become “unstuck.”

It is perfectly normal to feel like you’re not progressing when writing. Feeling stuck does not necessarily mean you are writing poorly.

Let’s divide this into two definitions to help give this discussion some direction.

The first definition encompasses feeling stuck in terms of a writing’s progression. This can involve plot failing to progress in a timely manner, characters hanging around a single location for too long, or any other issue that causes the writing and its corresponding action to feel stale. When these issues crop up, it is worth pausing to diagnose why the progression slowed or stopped in the first place. Is there too much focus on details that don’t contribute much to the plot? Are characters failing to command interest, therefore simply being “there” and not growing? Whatever the reason, you may need to re-evaluate what details are worth your time, such that those most valuable to plot progressing receive needed attention and can therefore help get you “unstuck.”

The second definition doesn’t involve any particular work’s progress; rather, it deals with your own progress as a writer. Perhaps you feel stuck because you can’t sense any progress in your skills, or you feel that you’re writing in a style that you don’t enjoy. Or maybe you love writing, but you don’t love YOUR writing. Again, it is normal to feel stuck this way. The tricky thing is that this issue is harder to diagnose—there is no single answer to get yourself “unstuck” when you feel unhappy with your skills. However, many solutions exist, and each person will arrive at a solution that works for them.

You may find that reading works by other people will spark a creative drive that carries over to your writing. Perhaps a different genre of writing in a completely different style will help flex muscles you didn’t even know you had. Maybe watching a movie or show will let you better visualize how subtle literary cues translate to real-life actions and motions. Many internal and external stimuli can help get you out of the dreaded creative rut.

Keep in mind that whatever may make you feel stuck is only temporary. We are always growing and changing as we gather new experiences and gain new insights. Feeling stuck at the moment might mean you just don’t have the correct tools in your toolbox. Writing 101 is here to help you gather as many tools as possible; however, it is your responsibility to use those tools as means to meet your own ends.

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

Phoenix mutters to himself as he recounts the week’s Writing 101 topic. It didn’t take long for him to reach the back of the building, where the entire Potomac River laid in wait for anyone brave enough to enjoy the waterfront. Umbrellas and shade sails parade down the boardwalk, but few people are willing to sit outside, even in the shade.

The snake sits down at a set of tables and chairs. They’re graciously arranged under a swooping sail strung up on towering poles. A breeze coming off of the river helped stir the air, bringing with it a slightly funky freshwater smell. Better than no moving air at all.

Phoenix wanted to keep moving to stretch out his legs, but he seriously preferred to not risk overheating. He pulled out the Camera as a compromise, ready to film the waterfront around him, when his phone began buzzing.

“Huh?”

He set the Camera down to take his phone out of his pocket. He half-expected his boss or one of his project managers to show up as the caller, but it instead displayed a number from the immediate area. Strange… maybe a client wanted to reach him? It wouldn’t have been the first time.

“Hello?”

Phoenix leaned forward to rest his elbows on the table.

“Oh—yes, this is him. Phoenix Bowman.”

He listened for several seconds.

“Er… oh… oh, wait—yes! No, yes, that’s correct. I reached out about your listing on the Pinside website. So you—you’ve bought the machine and… have it held with the distributor?”

A pause.

“Because you had to move to New York City. I see.... I mean… I’m certainly still interested. I’ll be happy to pay when you’re ready to receive the money. I’ll email you the details.”

Phoenix cleared his throat. He didn’t realize it had gone very dry.

“No problem. Thank you, Tad, I appreciate it. Stay cool in New York.”

The snake hung up and stared at his phone for several seconds before letting himself slump into the back of the chair.

“Did I really just agree to buy a pinball machine?”

It’s time to dive into the aptly-named Lakeside Furs gathering – boasting an Atlantis theme for its 16th edition! It’s happening at the Chalet Bergerblick hostel in Wald im Pinzgau in the Salzburg region from June 29 to July 6; that’s a full week of fun with fellow furs! As you might imagine, the event has plenty of outdoor options to enjoy, including a reservoir with spring-fresh water, hikes, and even rafting, canoeing, and other similar activities. You’ll also have the chance to use a sauna at the hostel! Indoor activities are also planned, including a Dealers Den, a chill out evening featuring drinks, music, and a great atmosphere to socialize and get to know your fellow furs, as well as board games, a space to hook up a Nintendo Switch, and special interest groups! The event is underway as of publishing this issue, so if you couldn’t make it this time, be sure to keep an eye on it for next year!

FURRY QUOTE

Howdy, all! Tide here with an amusing quote for you today as a reminder that you can find wisdom in everything and everyone if only you look for it.

A quote by Dave Berry.

”If God had wanted us to be concerned for the plight of the toads, he would have made them cute and furry.”

~ Dave Berry

Now regardless of the plight of toads and jokes about ways to make them more interesting to the general populace, Dave Berry makes an excellent point, intentional or not. Someone could make a case for any one thing to be the future or the solution to climate change or global hunger, but that does not mean it should be everyone’s focus. Now of course everyone should care and do their part to solve such issues when they can, but we as humans could not have a functional— or happy— society if everyone pursued the same exact thing. Instead we all have to focus on what interests us, whether that be one thing or many things. Focus on your interests and that is how you will come to make a difference in the world around you.

Not everyone will understand or relate to every interest and that’s okay! Concern yourself with the things you find “cute and furry” and not only will it be the best way you can help the world, but it will make you happier too. Most importantly, I hope this serves as a reminder that no matter how silly or strange a statement is, if you take the moment to think about things critically, you can learn from everyone and everything.

⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰

That’s all for this week’s Furry Quote. I hope it serves as a reminder that you can find wisdom in all things and to focus on the things that bring you joy.

Do you have a quote or topic you’d like us to discuss next? Feel free to fill out this form with your idea(s). You can also submit content by emailing furryweeklysubmissions@gmail.com, or you can directly message me on Instagram.

Thanks for stopping by, and until next time.

All the best,
Tide
