ANIMAL OF THE WEEK

Hello everyone! It’s Zed Shirogane and it’s another animal of the week segment!

Animal of the week is a segment where we highlight an animal that is really cool, cute, creepy, or just plain fascinating. There will be a coloring-page illustration for you all to print out and color in at home, as well as an adoptable character inspired by the animal of that week. The best part? All proceeds made by said adopt will be donated to conservation charities!

Whenever possible, we do symbolically adopt the animal, but only some animals have the privilege to have that as an option unfortunately; thus we collect extra funds to donate to many different species conservation charities, donate towards wildlife rehabilitation programs, or send funds to scientists so that they can research underappreciated animal species. Join us on this fun adventure, and I hope that you, too, will fall in love with these amazing animals!

We’re moving right along with our series on Doves today!

Columbidae is a bird family consisting of doves and pigeons. These are stout-bodied birds with short necks and short slender bills. They primarily feed on seeds, fruits, and plants. Pigeons and doves are distributed everywhere on Earth, except for the driest areas of the Sahara Desert, Antarctica and its surrounding islands, and the high Arctic. The family contains 344 species divided into 50 genera. Thirteen of the species are extinct. In English, the smaller species tend to be called "doves" and the larger ones "pigeons." However, the distinction is not consistent, and does not exist in most other languages. Historically, the common names for these birds involve a great deal of variation between the terms. The bird most commonly referred to as just "pigeon" is the domestic pigeon, which is common in many cities as the feral pigeon.

The doves’ wings are large, and have eleven primary feathers. Doves have strong wing muscles and are among the strongest fliers of all birds. Doves have unique body feathers, with the shaft being generally broad, strong, and flattened, tapering to a fine point, abruptly. In general, the aftershaft is absent; however, small ones on some tail and wing feathers may be present. Body feathers have very dense, fluffy bases, are attached loosely into the skin, and drop out easily. Possibly serving as a predator avoidance mechanism, large numbers of feathers fall out in the attacker's mouth if the bird is snatched, facilitating the bird's escape. The plumage of the family is variable.

This Week’s Species: Oriental turtle dove (Streptopelia orientalis)

Characteristics

This is a dove with an attractive plumage: rufous-scaled scapulars and wing coverts, dusky underparts, and a black-and-white striped patch on the side of its neck made of silver-tipped feathers. There is a considerable variation in plumage in different subspecies.

Fun Facts

The Ainu people traditionally interpret bird calls as elaborate sayings in their own language. In the case of these doves, the ascribed saying, an amalgam of several, is as follows:

Kusuwep toyta: Turtle dove ploughs
Huci wakkata: Grandmother draws water
Katkemat suke: Wife cooks
Pon tono ipe: Little master eats

The reason the dove is said to be ‘ploughing’ is that it is often seen burrowing in the fields with its feet in search of food, and thus appears as such.

Habitat

The habitat varies, but the Oriental turtle dove breeds in well-wooded, but open habitats. In the winter, they breed in more open habitats but usually with good tree cover. The westernmost race, meena, breeds in the Western Palearctic region. The southernmost populations are resident, but most other birds migrate south to winter in India, the Maldives, and southern Japan. They disperse widely and are known from islands such as the Lakshadweep in winter. S.o. Orientalis occurs as a rarity in western Alaska and British Columbia. It is also a vagrant to northern and western Europe and occurrences in Britain.

Diet

The Oriental turtle dove is granivorous, feeding on the seeds of hemp, sunflower, wheat, millet and amaranth. It also consumes gastropods. They forage on the ground.

Life Cycle

The summer breeding season in the temperate zone can be protracted. In southern India, the breeding season is in winter. In display, the male flaps its wing noisily and shoots up before gliding down with an outspread tail. Nests take about two days to build with the male gathering material and the female placing it. The nest is more substantial than in some other doves and is placed at mid-canopy height. In Japan, nests built at a greater height tended to be prone to predation. Males were found to incubate in the day and the female by night. Two white eggs, as for all pigeons and doves, are laid in a twig nest in a tree.

Conservation

Oriental turtle doves are found across a very broad geographic area, are common in parts of their range, and overall populations are considered stable. They are currently evaluated as Least Concern.

Adopt

All funds from this adopt will go to animal conservation. The goal for this month is to save up to help fund scientific research on the effects of climate change on bird species, through a donation to the National Audubon Society which requires a total of $100. This adopt will be one of 4 total created to achieve this goal and hopefully more, extra funds are pooled together to be donated to conservation research programs. It will be available for $30 at Shirogane Studios.

Coloring Page

Enjoy this coloring page made by yours truly, for you! Feel free to print it out at home to color in. If you enjoy the design you can also purchase it on a multitude of products like shirts and stickers: links to these options can be found at Shirogane Studios.

ART 101

Hae, it’s Vae, and today marks the beginning of something truly extraordinary! We're embarking on a thrilling journey through art history, inviting you to join me in a quest for self-discovery by crafting our own unique styles inspired by the rich tapestry of artists and movements from the past.

Let's delve into the roots of human creativity, tracing back to the Paleolithic remnants of ancient cave paintings. Together, we'll glean insights from these timeless artworks as we endeavor to recreate reflections from both our world and imaginations!

Let’s talk about: Ancient Cave Paintings Photo of a cave painting.

From the early Paleolithic to the Neolithic period (35000 to 4000 BC) early humans in Europe and Africa left numerous paintings in caves, like this one. It’s fascinating to see how simple, yet enchanting our creations can be even when limited to such simplicity!

The awe-inspiring spectacle of cave paintings in Lascaux, France transports me to dream-like depictions, vividly portraying a spiritual and mystical connection with familiar beasts. These masterpieces capture the essence of the depicted animals, reflecting the intimate connection the artists had with them—a connection that transcends time. Through inspired strokes, each influenced by a connected intention, we too can forge a profound connection with our creations. I encourage you all to practice with me; seek a deep connection to what you're drawing, allowing your strokes to resonate with the emotions your subject evokes. Consider roughing out a sketch beforehand, providing a framework that liberates your ability to express. After each stroke, reflect on how it made you feel. Experiment with drawing groovy lines on a large, smooth surface with chalk or markers—focus on the attributes and attitudes of your subject. Revel in the joy of feeling emotion and witness the transformative power of creation when channeling different moods!

Art Word of the Day: Parietal

Art Word of the Day: Parietal

Parietal means of, relating to, attached to, or denoting the wall of the body or of a body cavity or hollow structure. Parietal art typically refers to art found in caves!

I often hear people say they need to be in the right mood to draw. However, I view drawing as an experience to improve and enhance my mood. Whether expressing sadness vividly or navigating complex emotions, the art reflects my journey. What the art does for you often outweighs how it's received by others. Let's place value on exploring emotions and creating a fulfilling experience. Never again let uncertainty about your art interfere with the joy of your creative process!

It's truly fascinating to witness the captivating allure that simplicity brings to our creations! In an era saturated with digital art, where even traditional elements seem to compete with the best examples of comparable pieces, there's something magical about the remnants preserved from the prehistoric past. Art from then captures the very essence of creativity, communication, and expression! While there's no comparison to physically experiencing a piece of real art, for today's practice, a raw photo will suffice to convey the essence and charm of our creations.

Photo of Fizzy Dizzy Dutchie as a chalk drawing on a garage wall. Artwork of Fizzy Dizzy Dutchie.

I dove right in and quickly sketched our very own Fizzy Dizzy Dutchie – seen above – on the garage wall with chalk, capturing the mystery and awe inspired by ancient cave paintings. Ancient parietal art was usually made with organic components such as charcoal and ochre, and though I was all too ready to try this, I couldn’t so easily gather these natural resources living in the city, so the whole process was a bit more modernized than I would have liked! However, a modern cave (garage) with my modern cave paints (chalk) had to suffice, and if you want to try this for yourself, here’s my tips!

  1. Find as smooth of a stone surface as you can.
  2. I didn’t sketch on the surface beforehand, but I did draw it out in my sketchpad first to get a clear idea of what I’ll be reimagining.
  3. Treat this as a full-body experience! If you have a surplus of ground pigments to play with, you’re in for a treat!
  4. Chalk layers nicely, so have no fear, be bold with each stroke!
  5. Don’t try to fill things in densely, just stoke out pigments and let the texture of the wall shine through! You can even let the pre-existing textures guide you, working out details from what’s already there!
  6. Share your magical creation with us.

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

I encourage you all to try this yourselves—create something as big as you can, then capture a dynamic picture to share with us, tagged with #FurryWeekly! If you want a chance to have your own character featured in an upcoming practice, submit and tag your ref also so we can find it! Have a blast from the past! (I’m sorry, my humor extincts)

SPECIES SPOTLIGHT

Hello readers, and welcome back to an exciting week of Species Spotlight! This is Danielle once again making a guest appearance for this segment. Sadly, Species Spotlight has been on hiatus since around issue 256, but we’ll try to bring it back gradually.

Before we put the spotlight on this week’s original species, I wish to let all of you know that we’re still looking to recruit more hosts for this segment. If you enjoy diving into species lore and/or find original species fascinating, then this might be for you! Feel free to message our boss, Yeshua, if you’re interested in hosting Species Spotlight.

This week we will be flying towards magical fairy-like creatures called Infaries by MoolkY!

Meeko

Meeko, the main mascot of the Infary species.

Meet Meeko, the main mascot! Meeko is a little silly and fun Infary who loves meeting new people and playing around. This Infary is commonly referred as a "he/him," but anything works for him.

What are Infaries?

Infaries are cute, small anthropomorphic fairy-like creatures mostly known for their two pairs of wings, a hidden mouth, and sharp retractable teeth. They might look creepy sometimes, but they can be very good companions. The Infary name comes from the words ‘fairy’ and ‘infernal’ because of their fairy-like and creepy appearance.

In regards to their identity, Infaries don't really have a gender and often don't understand or care about it; thus, they can have any pronouns and identity. Normally, Infaries don’t express attraction towards other species, orientations, and preferences, but it could still happen.

Origins and Lore

Legends say that Infaries are believed to be evil and come from hell or a similar place, but in reality, they do not. Infaries are born from eggs produced by an organism called Infernarios, this plant-like organism that can grow in humid, closed spaces in nature hidden from the light such as caves. Infaries and Infernarios are believed to come from a world that stopped existing, but somehow this species survived and started spreading in other places. No one knows for sure where Infaries come from or why Infernarios start growing in some worlds.

One of the many places where Infernarios can grow is Berelden. Infaries can live in worlds where Infernarios don't grow and exist. This can happen in many ways such as getting caught in a trip through dimensions, worlds, portals, magic, etc. It’s all up to you!

A photo showing how Infaries are born by the plant-like organism.

Infaries don't leave their eggshell on their first day of life since they can’t fully open their eyes, and the amount of time may vary on each Infary. They usually go out into the world as soon as their eyes open. When their glow is active, this will guide them in the dark.

To learn more about Infernarios, check out the origins section from the Infary guide.

Anatomy

Infaries are digitigrade creatures with a pair of bat and fairy/insect wings, giving it a total of four wings. They can range from 24 to 30 cm in size, and as a baby, they have very small horns, short tails, and short fur with a size around 10 cm.

A photo showing the anatomy of an Infary. A photo showing the horn types of an Infary.

Their body is often thin, but they can be chubby too. They have fur all over their body except for the horns, and their long lizard-like tail tends to have less fur than the rest of their body. Some Infaries have a condition where their horns don't grow, so they stay small.

There are also other distinctive features of an Infary:

-Roundy head
-Short snout
-Mouth (shown or hidden)
-Teeth (sharp, long, thin, and retractable)
-Tongue
-Big blank eyes similar to a cat’s eye shape
-No iris or pupils (they can use fake pupils, though)
-Dog-like noses (often small, but can vary in size)
-Z/S-shaped horns (common) with other horn types too
-No visible ears (rare if they do)

Diet

Infaries like to try eating everything. They are able to protect themselves from dangerous food through their sense of smell. They have very strong stomachs, so they can eat any food as long as they like it. Sadly, eating something that is toxic or poisonous/venomous could kill them, but they tend to be more resistant to these than other creatures.

Nature / Behavior

Infaries are small genderless wild creatures who can’t reproduce nor have private parts. They do not speak, but they can make noises while somehow being able to understand each other.

They can easily adapt to any lifestyle rather than just staying wild, be civilized, act like humans, etc. Infaries in the wild are rare, but they tend to be aggressive and not obey anyone's command. Be warned because they will bite if they are in the wild. Their thinking and reasoning is almost human, but not completely. Just like anyone else, their personality and behaviors can vary and will depend on their life experiences.

They are commonly very loyal creatures that tend to follow and admire bigger creatures who often look to create a bond with other creatures to serve, assist, and protect them. However, they can also be independent or loners.

Traits

Color All Infaries have at least one part of their body that can glow (horns, eyes, some markings, claws, etc). Infaries can have any colors and patterns on their body. Teeth and eyes can be any color. Eggs can be any color/design.

Texture Horns can be made of any material and can be transparent with objects inside. They can have any fur length and any fur style.

Accessories Infaries can wear any clothes and accessories like a regular human or furry.

Variations Claw length may vary. They can have broken horns, missing limbs, etc.

Feel free to check the health section on the Infary guide for anomalies you can add as traits.

Obtaining an Infary

Infaries are a completely open species, which means you’re welcome to create your own Infary and sell them, too. Please be sure to check out the guide and rules before doing so. There is a very nice free to use customizable base on Ko-fi as well as other bases here if you’d like to create your own.

If you have any other questions about this species, feel free to ask MoolkY in the comments section on Toyhouse here. If you’re not on Toyhouse, feel free to check her Carrd for other important links and platforms.

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

Thank you for tuning in to this week of Species Spotlight! I hope you enjoyed learning about the Infaries today.

There are plenty of creative original species out there, and we’ll be sure to hunt them down. If you’d like to recommend any open or closed original species to us, please feel free to reach out to me on any of my platforms. As Coyote Peterson from Brave Wilderness says, stay wild, and we’ll see you on the next species adventure!

WRITING 101

Yeshua turns the powered-down Camera over in his hands, studying the machine’s outer shell. He has a few minutes until his new potential candidate arrives at the office for an interview, so he thought to familiarize himself with the machine recently trusted to his care. The puma holds the device up to the light spilling through the office windows to study it more closely.

“Didn’t you move on your own at some point…?”

A heavy door snaps closed, echoing through the space. Yeshua turns, but of course, the suite door is around the corner. He hurries out to greet the new arrival, camera in his hand.

“No, just here for the day,” says a smooth, brisk male voice from the reception desk, followed by some polite, but genuine laughter.

As Yeshua rounds the corner, he lays eyes on his query. A tall, skinny, but impressive snake with scales of gorgeous reddish-pinks turns at the incoming footsteps. The folder in his clawed hand tremors slightly. His striking silver eyes with wide, vertical pupils quickly take in the cat’s arrival. His flared hood rises slightly in clear excitement, twisting the thick gold patches of scales on the hood ridges.

“Phoenix Bowman!”

“Yeshua! So nice to meet you.”

They shake hands, cool hide into padded paw. The snake named Phoenix smiles brightly, barely showing off his sharp teeth and two folded fangs. He straightens his sweater as Yeshua gestures to the conference room.

“Shall we?”

“Absolutely.”

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

Hello friends, and welcome to Furry Weekly’s Writing 101! I’m Bryce Griffin, here to get all you writers out there the inside scoop on literature tips and tricks. Let’s get started!

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

Let's talk about:

Introductions

Last week, we covered saying goodbye to a character. Now, fittingly, we can talk about saying hello to a character! This is an important skill to understand because it will typically occur early in the story. You as an author need to hook your potential readers with a smooth, flowing narrative, and you need to do this early. A lot of this involves strong descriptions of the environment. More importantly, however, is an even stronger introduction of an important character.

A character’s introduction should provide enough detail to sketch out a strong image, but not bog down the narrative with excessive information.

“Information dumping,” as it were, is one of the worst things you can do for your story. It’s been mentioned several times previously in Writing 101, but reiterating this point is always worth the time. As authors, we want to share all of the details we dream up. We worked so hard on them, right? Unfortunately, what we see in our mind’s eye is much more refined and complete than what your reader will see the first time they meet your character. If we spend several paragraphs on describing a character, then it destroys the all-important narrative flow.

In real life, we don’t pick up every little tidbit about somebody the first time we sit down and chat with them. Appearance is an immediate and obvious focal point; however, how they speak, move, behave, and even perceive the world come out through repeated interactions. As such, a character in a story should receive similar treatment. It makes little sense, if any at all, to detail sentence after sentence divulging every little thing we want to share. We absolutely want to share every character detail we envision (and I guarantee we all would if unrestrained), but we need to pay attention to the all-important story flow.

Us authors should absolutely take the necessary time to properly introduce a character. After all, the reader needs some sort of concept to work from. But pay close attention to how you apportion the details. Are you serving measured, easy-to-digest dollops of information to gradually build your reader’s understanding of a character? Or are you dumping the entire pot onto the tray? Hopefully it’s the former!

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

Want me to take a look at your work? Got a general question for Writing 101? Just shoot me a message on Discord! I’ll be happy to answer any writing questions or even critique your work.

Thanks for joining me in Furry Weekly’s Writing 101. I hope you enjoy the rest of the magazine!

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

The two anthros, relaxed and smiling, take plenty of time to chat. Not all of it is business; in fact, it mostly turns into an introduction of interests and a small exhibit of Phoenix’s writing. Every time he pulls up a digital sample of his work, Yeshua notices that his long, scaly tail flicks excitedly, and his hood flares with anticipation.

“So these are just super short stories from when I was in school,” says the snake as he opens up several documents at once. “Four hundred words per story, once per week. At the same time, I was writing a novel about a lost dragon race in the modern world… or, you know, trying to. And before that was a Pokémon fanfiction.”

He grins slyly. “It ain’t too good, obviously. It taught me how to write. But I’ll always be proud of it… even if hardly anybody read all hundred fifty thousand words.”

Yeshua has to recollect himself.

“Well… I don’t think there’s any question about it. You seem like a great fit for the Writing 101 position. Now… as much as I’d like to hire you on the spot, we typically ask any potential hires to—“

“Write up a mock segment?”

As if by magic—or perhaps by sly computer navigation—a full segment draft appears right there on the screen. Indeed, at first glance, it seems quite like the writings Yeshua received for five continuous years prior. His jaw drops slightly at the preparedness.

“I got in touch with a few friends,” says Phoenix, smiling again.

The puma has to mentally shake himself.

“Well… that simplifies things!” he says with a laugh. “Why don’t we check it out together?”

So the cat and reptile lean in a little and review the segment.

FURSUIT FOCUS

What’s up, y’all? Yeshua here again to bring you the Fursuit Focus segment! I’ve found another fluffy individual to share today, and I’m super excited to get to talk about 'em so let’s not waste any time!

Summer takes the spotlight this time!

We’ve got a real cute fox today! Taking a look at her design, it’s a little hard to describe, but I feel like her look is relatively simple, yet has some lovely details that really make her stand out! Pink and white dominate Summer’s color palette, but there’s a bit of variety that makes her look so good! Check out the head. The hair is a sort of dark pinkish-red along with a very light pink; it’s an interesting combination with contrasting intensities but it actually fits quite well! You’ve also got the white and brown fluff on the cheeks and ears respectively, corresponding with the white fur on the face and brown ears. The brown is likely the color that stands out the most in the design, but it actually complements all the other colors nicely, especially with the pink and white parts of the inside of the ears! Taking an even closer look, Summer’s eyes are just beautiful; the purple pupils and the pink and purple irises are lovely, and the pink and blue makeup along with the subtle eyeliner make for a sharp look! You’ll notice that there’s only the head and tail, but even with just a partial, the character design not only looks great, but Summer – the person behind the fursuit – really makes the most of this character.

Summer enjoys taking fun photos when she suits up, and something I think is very notable about how she does that is the way she portrays her character. Summer says she likes to act adventurous and active: “Summer tends to be pretty happy go-lucky, eating up life’s adventures as they come!” This is a pretty straightforward way of describing her character, and I think she exceedingly succeeds at actually portraying Summer that way. If you take a look at her social media, you’ll see the sheer liveliness she shows when she’s captured on camera; whether she’s in front of a simple, solid background while indoors, or outdoors on a sunny day, you’ll typically see her posing so confidently or doing something active that gives off the feel of such an outgoing personality! Not only is Summer very good at presenting her character with so much charm, but the outfits that she chooses for her photos are wonderful! I think those two aspects – her charisma and her outfits – combine really well and elevate the shots she takes of herself when fursuiting. This is simply what I noticed when Summer takes photos by herself, but there’s more to what she gets up to when she suits up!

I mentioned earlier that Summer loves to take fun photos, and that includes when she is with friends! Summer says one of her favorite things to do when suiting up is simply hang out with her pals: “Suiting with friends is always fun since our characters can interact and goof around together.” Summer also likes to go on fursuit walks that happen where she lives, so overall, she tends to enjoy interacting with other fursuiters and just have a good time, as it should be! She even says she likes to make funny fursuit videos with her friends!

When it comes to the fursuit content she likes to make, Summer says she likes to take photos and record videos! For photos, Summer usually tries to create a scene where she can bring her character to life, which as I mentioned before, she does incredibly well! For videos, Summer likes to dance to songs, particularly pole dances or floor work! Whether she’s taking photos or videos, she tends to prefer doing it outside since she really enjoys the outdoors! If she has to stay inside though, she’ll try to take photos with natural lighting. Summer says she suits up about once a week, and when she does, it seems like she has a lot of favorite activities to choose from!

Summer got her current fursuit while window shopping for a fursuit that had everything she was looking for. Specifically, she wanted a fursuit with good visibility, and that was sturdy and looked cute. Pretty simple and reasonable features, I think. Then, she came across Summer, the fox character you see her portray now! “The pink fur and overall detailing is what pulled me to her even more, until I decided I had to have her!” Honestly, I agree with Summer – I think this fursuit perfectly fits what she described she wanted!

Believe it or not, Summer only got this fursuit at the end of January 2024! So at the time of writing this, it’s only been about a month since she’s had it, but even in just that little time, she says she’s been an absolute joy to wear!

Summer is still somewhat new to the fursuiting scene, only getting into it in early 2023. She made her own fursuit head which marked the beginning of her journey into fursuiting. She says she loved putting on her head, always appreciating the aspect of transforming into an anthro character: “I’m pretty sure I felt butterflies putting on my very first suit for the first time!” Adding to the aspect of transforming into a character, Summer says that being able to bring a character to life through her actions and words is something she loves about fursuiting because it brings her the same joy she felt when she first tried on her first fursuit head!

Although Summer recently joined the fursuiting scene and even more recently got a new fursuit she loves, she’s having an absolute blast just dressing up as a big, fluffy animal! So, it’s not hard to imagine that there’s probably much more to come from her as she goes on more fursuiting adventures!

⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰

That’s all I have for you all today! Thank you for reading! I hope you all enjoyed getting to know more about Summer as much as I enjoyed writing about her! If you liked what you saw from her, I definitely encourage you to follow her on Instagram!

As always, we’re looking out for fursuiters to feature here, so just use the tags #furryweekly and #fursuitfocus when you post your fursuit photos and videos to social media if you want to be featured! You can also reach out to me or our usual host, tahlmorra and tell us you want to be featured, or you can also suggest your friends or favorite fursuiter!

I’m Yeshua, and thanks again for stopping by! As always, I hope to see you next time! But until then, take care!

PHOTOGRAPHY 101

Hello, friends and photografurs! Welcome back to this week's Photography 101! I'm your co-host, Jaden. Today we’re gonna give you all something that you’ll always be able to come back to when you need. We’ll be briefly covering all of the photography basics in one single segment so you have a little cheat sheet to look back on whenever you need it!

Let's talk about: Photography basics: Fast track

ISO

ISO is what controls the sensitivity of your camera's sensor that is most commonly represented by a number value between 100-1600. Since this controls your sensor's sensitivity, that means this is the value you'll most likely want to change first if your photos are too bright or too dark. If your photos are too bright you'll want to decrease this value and if your photos are too dark you'll want to increase this value.

A claire redfield cosplayer
”So for this one, the Aperture was good, shutter speed was as slow as I was going to go with it, so in this case I would personally get an external light OR if that's not available, drop the ISO. I think in that photo it was chilling at 600. I would have bumped it down to 1000 at least.” -Sherry Berry

Shutter Speed

Shutter speed is exactly how it sounds: it controls the speed of your camera's shutter! This is useful for a plethora of different uses but its most important use is decreasing camera shake. Camera shake is what's caused when your shutter speed is too low which causes everything to turn out blurry, alternatively, if you're trying to capture a moving subject then your subject can also turn out blurry which is known as motion blur. If this is happening, then increase your shutter speed until the camera shake stops, but don't turn it up too much! Having too high of a shutter speed can make your photos turn out too dark since light has a shorter time to reach your sensor. If your photos turn out too dark after increasing your shutter speed then try turning up your ISO a little bit.

A blurry photo of a dog running towards the camera
Here you can see both the subject and the background are blurry. This was caused by a combination of motion blur and camera shake because my shutter speed was too low.

Aperture

Aperture is best described simply as the size of the hole in your camera that allows light in. Aperture is mostly responsible for what area will be in focus. For things like portrait or macro photography, you usually will want a small aperture number to blur the background and keep the subject in focus. For things like landscape photography, you’ll usually want to shoot with a high aperture number to keep the foreground in focus. Be aware that adjusting you Aperture will affect the brightness of your photo so you may need to change the ISO or shutter speed as you adjust your aperture

CONVENTION CALENDAR

Hello again, readers! I’m Shetani, your Convention Calendar segment host for this issue. March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb, or so the saying goes, but no matter what kind of critter you are, you’ll find plenty of fun opportunities to gather with other furries this month. Let’s hear about March’s furry conventions and events happening online, around the world, and in your neck of the woods!

Gdakon infographic.

Gdakon 2024: A Space Odyssey blasts off from Wednesday February 28 - Sunday March 3 at the Novotel Gdańsk Marina Hotel in Gdańsk, Poland! This year brings a lot of firsts, including a dance competition, talent show, and door sign contest. Gdakon will take a break from the fursuit photoshoot, providing a photo backdrop and props instead, so you can shoot your own pics to your heart’s content! While at Gdakon, keep an eye out for representatives from their charity Help4herps, a reptile shelter in Gdansk, and donate to assist them in continuing their great work. Gdakon requires a valid COVID-19 vaccination certificate.

VancouFur returns to the Sheraton Vancouver Guildford Hotel in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada from Thursday March 7 - Sunday March 10 for their annual convention. VancouFur offers a lot of unique programming beyond the typical furry convention staples, like their Cutie Pageant, ice cream social, murder mystery, fursuiter maid cafe, and convention-wide scavenger hunt. Fursuiter, videographer, and artist Zee the Raccoon is VF 2024’s Guest of Honor, and the Community Spotlight is Che, an artist, illustrator, and colorist whose volunteer career at VF dates back to 2014. Qmunity, a BC-based non-profit that works to improve queer, trans, and Two-Spirit lives, returns as the charity of choice. This year, charity auction bidding is digital, so be sure to register for that if you’d like the chance to help out a good cause and walk away with some quality prizes!

TFF’s charity of choice is The Center for Animal Research and Education (CARE), which provides a safe, permanent, and loving home to big cats and other animals in need. TFF will honor three furry guests in 2024: vaccine researcher Chise, artist Lady Rain, and the multitalented Failyn (Blackcheetah). The schedule is still in the works, but attendees can expect panels, dealer’s den and artist alley, a fursuit dance competition, DJs, live performances, and an after dark rodeo. Yeehaw!

This year marks FE’s first ever dance competition, the Pas Le Choix de Danser, so come out and show your support to all the talented dancers! The events schedule is overflowing with even more programming, from meet-n-greets to panels to games, and dances every night of the con. Las Vegas Fur Con infographic.

After a great first year, Las Vegas Fur Con is ready and raring to return to the Alexis Park All-Suite Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. Friday March 29 - Sunday March 31 are this year’s dates. If you think you’re S.P.E.C.I.A.L., maybe you can survive the weekend of the “Nuclear A-paw-calypse!” Surpassing last year’s guest roster, LVFC is rolling out the (hopefully not glowing) red carpet for five total Guests of Honor as follows: dancer, writer, DJ, and Twitch streamer Rahne / DJ Addix, artist RoSphix, game show host Tokens Arcade, AV professional Oddy, and video producer/gamer BardicRJ. LVFC will partner yet again with the charity Las Vegas Trans Pride, an organization which aids the trans* community of Las Vegas. Programming includes live performances by multiple furry music artists, an adults-only night market and rooftop party, dealer’s den and artist alley, panels, and meetups. Attendees must be at least 21 years of age, vaccinated against COVID-19 with a primary series or one booster shot, and wear a face mask while in convention space.

The theme, Greetings from Camp Critters, aims to delight fans of cryptids and the paranormal. Planned events include a dance competition, IT furs presentations, Me Too panel, and others, in addition to the standard furry con activities like a dealer’s den, group photos, gaming, karaoke, and dances. Programming is hosted in French and English, with Fauntastic providing translation services for attendees who need them. A unique aspect of Fauntastic is their specially-marked sticker areas on which furries can feel free to self-express by writing, drawing, and of course sticking surfaces to their hearts’ content! If you want to attend Fauntastic, keep in mind that you must be over 18 years old.

Calendar listing March events, showcasing art of Sunni the Deer and Mama Eevee with a suitcase decorated with the Texas Furry Fiesta logo.

This month’s calendar graphic by Sunni shows her and cover artist Mama Eevee all packed up and ready to go to Texas Furry Fiesta! Make sure to say hello if you run into either (or both!) of them at the con!

March means it’s time for the vernal equinox, heralding the coming of spring. We often associate springtime with beginnings, fresh starts, and turning over a new leaf. This is a great time to make new friends and get connected with your local furry community by helping out at a physical or online furry event. Remember to keep up-to-date on vaxx boosters and wear your face mask when meeting up with any furs in person.

Got questions or suggestions for Convention Calendar? Feel free to drop me a line on Twitter and the Fediverse, or hit me up at any of the other platforms linked on my website. If there’s an upcoming con you want to ensure we cover here on Furry Weekly, don’t hesitate to let me know. Have fun and stay safe out there!

FURRY QUOTE

Hello, readers! This is Danielle coming back to enlighten your day with an inspiring quote. March is a month about luck, so we’ll be delving into a quote themed around luck. Let’s take a look!

A quote by Nick Cummins.

“The universe works in crazy ways. Your good luck will come in waves, and so does your bad, so you have to take the good with the bad and press forward.”

~ Nick Cummins

This quote speaks a lot of truth. Unfortunately, we can’t always rely on good luck. If we did, we wouldn’t be able to grow as individuals. By embracing the bad, we can make more room for the good to happen. Please don’t feel discouraged though if something doesn’t work out in your favor. It means that the universe is working out something big for you. Something you may least expect.

Remember that life always strives for balance, and the universe wants us to benefit and learn from this balance as well. Stay hopeful, positive, and thankful for what you currently have in your life, and you’ll soon see more good luck pouring in.

~~~~~
This concludes this week’s Furry Quote. I hope it brought some reassurance to your day.
If you have a topic you’d like to have covered or a quote you’d like to have shared, feel free to reach out to the main host of Furry Quote: Multifurse.
Thank you for reading this far, and we’ll see you all again next time!
Sincerely, Danielle (LycanRaptor)
