ART CORNER

How’s it going everyone? This is Dozu here to bring you another edition of Furry Weekly’s Art Corner! If you enjoy the art the fandom has to offer, then stick around!

Before we get into it though, I want to remind you all that we’re still looking for a permanent host for this segment. That means we’re looking for someone who is interested in writing it every week, so if you not only enjoy seeing furry art, but also maybe writing about it, this could be for you! Just hit our boss up, Yeshua if you’re interested in hosting Art Corner!

Now, let’s not waste more time and see what we’ve got today!

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

Kitzuchi starts us off today with an amazing fullbody!

Fullbody digital illustration featuring a teal and white canine wearing graduation robes and holding a degree and a red flower

Our first piece features a sweet looking canine character with teal and white fur all dressed up for graduation holding a degree and a red rose. I wanted to take the time to congratulate the artist, Kitzuchi, on their recent highschool graduation! Good job! The background is a lovely watercolor brush style blue sky with some red rose petals flying in the wind. It’s simple but it helps the character itself stand out. There’s also a small hint of shading here and there that adds to the piece along with the white outline around the character. Lastly, I wanted to highlight the colors chosen for this piece, the darker and lighter shades of teal go perfectly with the whites in the fur and the blue of the sky while also contrasting nicely with the red petals scattered in the wind.

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

sambeawesome continues today with a stunning traditional piece!

Picture of a traditional piece of a black and white realistic cat

Next is an adorable traditional work of art featuring a black and white cat. In the picture you can see the pencils used to create the piece which is always a lovely touch. The paper is a light shade of brown which makes the pure whites of the pencils stand out a lot more.

The black and white stroke of the pencils work beautifully to give depth to the fur and make the art look almost like it could jump out of the paper at any moment. While there’s no real noticeable shading, the white streaks of fur act as highlights and look stunning.

The wood planks background that the picture was taken on looks fantastic and gives the whole picture an air of serenity and professionalism without taking away from the art itself.

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

TheRoguez ends today’s segment with a gorgeous illustration!

Pop art style illustration of three wolves looking directly at the viewer with the moon above them looking like an eye

Last piece of today is a beautiful illustration with a pop art look of three wolves staring at the viewer. The colors are really vibrant and some of the shading is done in that classic dots pattern that many pop pieces share.

The yellow of the eyes and teeth contrasts nicely with the cooler shades of violet and pink used on the fur and for the shading. The red of the moon/giant eye and the lighting has a bright pop that brings the piece together.

Lastly, the play of the moon being another eye staring at the viewer works beautifully with the whole feeling the piece evokes. Fantastic job!

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

That will do for today’s edition of Art Corner! Thanks for checking it out and please, if you liked what you saw, go give the artists some love and give them a follow if you want to see more!

WRITING 101

A familiar hawk is back in the office, steadily filling out yet another digital document on his work computer. He pauses for a brief second to stretch out his back and extend his legs. He winces, hands on his lower back, when the Camera sidles up. It whirrs quizzically at the bird’s discomfort.

“Oh… hi,” says Tad. “Just… you know. Stretching.”

Another whirr.

“I think I slept funny. Usually I’m fine, but today just isn’t the day. Either that or my chair sucks.”

The Camera whizzes a clear question. To anyone but Tad, these sequences of noises might suggest a malfunctioning machine.

“I know you don’t have to sit down, you smarty pants,” grumbles Tad. “You can just… move around and you’re fine.”

A snicker.

“Anyway, while you’re here.... Want to check out what I have for this week’s segment?”

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

Hello friends, and welcome to Furry Weekly’s Writing 101! I’m Bryce Griffin, here to get all you writers out there the inside scoop on literature tips and tricks. Let’s get started!

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

Title saying Rapid Recaps - Outlining.

Let's talk about:

Rapid Recaps - Outlining

The Rapid Recaps series is a focused and direct discussion that aims to cover simple yet important writing topics. They may be shorter than normal Writing 101 discussions, but the information covered is still critical to building good writing practices.

An outline provides a solid foundation off of which you can base your writing.

Your outline, whether it’s for a bog-standard five-paragraph essay or a road map for an entire novel, is key to reminding yourself what specific points you want to hit while you’re writing. It can be as simple as a list of ideas or as fleshed out as strong descriptions of key moments, complete with who’s where and why, sensory information, and other notes.

Why is this important? It may seem like a good idea to “go with the flow” and add content based on what feels right. This is totally understandable and sometimes necessary; your outline can only provide so much guidance. New ideas may pop into your head as you flesh out your narrative, and these new ideas may tug your original ideas one way or another. However, going forward without an outline of any kind can lead to challenging writing situations. You may end up adding incongruous plot points, character details that never blossom later, or accidentally neglect key concepts built up earlier in the narrative. It’s like constructing a road as you’re driving on it, all the while referencing no drawings for how the road is built.

Outlines avoid this issue. They don’t need to plan out every detail to a tee—at that point, you may as well be writing for a rough draft. The outline is there to help you visualize what key points you want to hit as you’re writing. This is extremely important because there is a lot to consider when actually writing your first draft. One of the worst things you can do is write yourself into a corner (create a narrative that logically cannot resolve itself in context with the rest of the writing). The outline distills your writing into an extremely basic form and allows you to envision much further ahead than you may be capable of while simultaneously writing a draft. You don’t have to follow your outline exactly. It is there to help organize your thoughts and guide your writing rather than railroad it and ignore any sparks of inspiration.

“Any thoughts?”

The Camera scans the writing once more before giving some clicks of approval.

“Really? Nothing at all?”

It issues the same clicks.

“All right… if you say so.”

Tad stands from his chair with a groan and adds, “I really need to get on my feet.... My back is going to hate me if I don’t.”

He stretches once more. As if on autopilot, he mouses over to another browser window already open, and curious images of large, dazzling, and colorful machines pop onto the screen. The Camera immediately cries out a shrill chirp.

“Ow! What—? Is everything okay?”

It frantically nods towards the screen. Tad’s expression quickly changes as he realizes why the Camera is panicking.

“Oh—oh, absolutely no! No, no, I swear it’s not what you think. You’re never going to be replaced. You’re too valuable.”

The Camera visibly relaxes. It still offers another chirruping question.

“What are they? They’re… well… they’re… um....”

Tad obviously never thought he’d need to explain something like this to the Camera.

“They’re just… you know… pinball machines.”

FURSUIT FOCUS

How’s it going you all? This is Yeshua and I’m here to bring you the Fursuit Focus segment again! You know the drill. We’re gonna take a look at another fluffy individual today so let’s not waste any time!

Here’s Zephyr to share just a little bit from all the shenanigans he gets up to!

Zephyr running on a concrete edge, dangerously close to the body of water on his left.

Zephyr is an incredibly upbeat fox who seems to always find a way to have fun no matter what he does! More on that in a bit, but first, a quick look at his fursuit! Zephyr’s design is pretty simple but easy to recognize! He’s got mostly white and aqua fur along with a bit of gray around his upper chest and ears which is a subtle, but neat addition to the design. Then he’s got black paws and claws as well as gray eyes which – along with the other bits of gray – complement his look very well! Finally, just look at his face! I feel like it’s accurate to say that the style of the suit is semi-toony – and quite a polished one at that – which makes for a facial expression full of emotion; just look at how happy and friendly he looks! He also looks like an energetic boyo which is actually quite appropriate – more on that in a sec. Lovely character design and fantastic job by Wolf_daz for bringing him to life!

Zephyr in mid air with one leg stretched and one bent in what seems to be an oriental-looking open field with green hills in the background.

Zephyr has lots of stuff he enjoys doing while fursuiting! Some of his favorites are suiting in public, doing his hobbies in suit, and being active! When I say these are his favorites, I really mean it! If you take a look at his socials you’ll find a good mix of all of these things, which are all honestly a joy to see! I want to focus on being active, though. Zephyr is such a dynamic fox! It’s not uncommon to find a photo where he’s caught jumping high in the air, getting carried by another fur, or maybe even doing a 540 kick! If you enjoy some lively and zestful action, you’ll love a lot of the stuff Zephyr shares; he combines high energy with fursuiting so well! Plus, he does say he would like to try tricking or parkour in fursuit when he takes the time to learn, so if you’re into that as well, you’ll want to keep tabs! Beyond his vigorous activities though, Zephyr is still a big fluffy blue fox who enjoys letting loose and having fun, so whether he’s with friends or alone, you’ll still see a lot of cheerful photos and videos of him fursuiting; he says he enjoys the activities he does because he likes to try and brighten people’s days when he fursuits, especially when in public! I dunno about you all, but just scrolling through his socials made me smile!

Zephyr standing on a graffitied ledge, what appears to be an ocean coast with large rock islands behind him.

Something Zephyr values about fursuiting is being able to create memories, which I’m sure is a sentiment just about every fursuiter can agree with! He says he especially likes photos with friends or exploring places that are new to him, sometimes even doing both at the same time! When a convention rolls around you can definitely expect tons of photos from Zephyr, but any time he gets to fursuit in public with friends he’ll make sure some photos get snapped as well! Zephyr’s favorite environments for photos are urban areas and nature which you’ll see plenty of on his socials. When it comes to videos, Zephyr will usually show off some of his hobbies, like being active as I mentioned before, but he also likes to play the violin, and specifically make violin covers!

Zephyr walking on a crosswalk in a crowd, a big red penguin crossing behind him.

Zephyr actually got to try out both partial and full suiting before getting his own fursuit. His friends let him borrow some of their suits which eventually led him to wanting one of his own sona. A friend referred him to wolf_daz and as you can see, he got a plantigrade fullsuit! He says the choice for a plantigrade was because he wanted to move around better than if he got a digitigrade, which, with all the active stuff Zephyr does, it makes sense! The main appeal of fursuiting for Zephyr was being able to portray and act as his fursona. Here’s how he explains it: “My fursona is very similar to me in terms of personality, so essentially I would just be myself while in suit, just with the appearance of a fox instead!”

Zephyr got his fursuit in November 2022, and he says he’s had it for almost one year as of November 17th. Although he’s still a bit new to the fursuiting scene, he absolutely hit the ground running! Zephyr fursuits at least once or twice a month, but will do more if there are furry events happening near him, but even without any events, there’s definitely a ton of other stuff he does while fursuiting as we’ve talked about!

Zephyr and two other fursuiters balancing each other on a pier, one fursuiter in the middle doing a handstand and the two on the side including Zephyr holding to his legs.

Zephyr says he is thankful for the friends who let him borrow their suits when he first became interested in fursuiting. Because of that, Zephyr ended up getting some decent experience with fursuiting, like learning to handle restricted movement, managing heat tolerance, caring for a fursuit, and more. One more group of folks Zephyr appreciates are the photographers for helping capture memorable moments for fursuiters!

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

That’s all for this edition of Fursuit Focus! This was such a fun segment and I hope you all enjoyed seeing all the fun shenanigans Zephyrus gets up to as much as I did! If you did like what you saw, definitely follow him for more!

As always, I’m on the lookout for fursuiters to feature here! If you, your friend, or your favorite fursuiter comes to mind, please tell me! Just use the tags #furryweekly and #fursuitfocus when you post your fursuit photos and videos to social media, or you can reach out to me or our usual host, tahlmorra!

I should be back next week with another fursuiter to show off, but until then, I’ve been Yeshua, and it’s been a real treat bringing you today’s segment! Take care!

PHOTOGRAPHY 101

Hello, friends and photografurs! Welcome back to this week's Photography 101! I'm your host, Jaden. Online, I've recently seen a lot of buzz around a style of photography called light painting. I thought this style of photography was very interesting, as it took the worlds of drawing and photography and combined them into one unique medium.

Let's talk about: Light Painting

Light painting is a style of photography where a laser or other small light source is used in a dark environment with a long exposure time to paint a picture. Unlike most styles of photography, light painting has only become a popular style within the last 30 years due to the increased availability of DSLR cameras. Despite only becoming popular recently, it has a very deep and rich history. It was originally used as a scientific method to study and observe the movement of people and animals by attaching light bulbs to their joints.

”Pathological Walk from Front” via PetaPixel

In the modern century, light painting has taken on a much more artistic form and merged drawing with photography. Many photographers have dedicated their careers to this form of photography and have taken some stunning photos, like one of my favorite photographers, Hannu Huhtamo. He beautifully paints animals and geometry with such a beautiful flow and precision, so it's like he's painting with a brush on a canvas.

A simple picture of two foxes drawn in the air with a light

Source: Hannu Huhtamo

To do light painting yourself, you’ll need a tripod, a camera capable of shutter speeds higher than 10 seconds, and either a phone with a flashlight mode, a laser pointer or a poi ball. To get started, you’ll need to shoot in your camera's manual mode, set your shutter speed to 10 seconds or higher, and lower your ISO to its lowest possible number to give yourself enough time to draw your image and keep it dark enough. If you're using a laser pointer, I would recommend positioning the camera in front of a wall and treating it as a canvas to draw on since pointing a laser directly at your camera can cause massive damage to the sensor and break your camera.

After you're all set up and you have an idea of what you want to paint, you'll just have to turn on your chosen light source and start “painting” your picture!

A gif of a laser pointer drawing an UWU on a wall

When the photo is done, every line you made will be captured into one still image.

An image of an UWU drawn on a wall

I'm not the most talented artist, but I still had lots of fun light painting! Even if all my photos did turn out sloppy.

While light painting may not be for me due to my inability to draw, it is still a super fun and easy style to just play around with. While I will never be on the level of light painting photographers like Hannu Huhamo, I still really enjoyed myself and had a lot of fun experimenting with it.

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰

That concludes this week's segment! If you have any questions about eclipse photography or would like to share your photos, don't be afraid to shoot me a message!

The party’s about to start at Midwest FurFest! It all kicks off Thursday November 30 and will end Sunday December 3, once again at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois, USA. This year’s theme, Snow Days, fully embraces the winter wonderland which often envelops MFF. Anyone who’s attended previously, or even browsed through con pictures from past years, can attest to the captured memories of fursuiters and non-suiters alike making snow angels, having snowball fights, and posing in a winter wonderland! Their schedule is packed to the gills with exciting activities, so check it out on MFF’s website to begin planning your fun-filled weekend. 2023’s Guests of Honor include fursuit maker Wild Acai and author/artist Jackaloo. The charity this time around is the Live Like Roo Foundation, an organization providing emotional and financial support to families whose pet faces a cancer diagnosis. In addition to a Dealer’s Den, MFF offers a unique Artist Menagerie - subdivided into the Artist Alley and Marketplace - where attendees can browse wares for sale and watch the making of art unfold live.

The first of these cons we’ll cover is Furvester, held at the Hotel Fortuna in Reutlingen, Germany. Four full days of fantasy await you from Wednesday December 28 - Sunday January 1. Don’t get blinded by science with their Mad Science theme, you want to be able to see all the pretty New Year fireworks! Furvester’s Guest of Honor this year is Pudge, a dancer, artist, and fursuiter from Ireland. Do you think you can guess how many fursuiters will be at Furvester 2023? How about Americans? On their website, you can find an informative “Nose Count” page, which breaks down current registrant demographics by country of origin, age, fursuit ownership, and even T-shirt size using fun bar graphs. Furvester proudly partners with the Vaihingen/Enz Animal Shelter, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to interact with them over the course of the con, whether at their Meet the Charity panel, participating in the charity auction, or donating to the fursuiter bucket brigade as they march around the hotel. Attendees must be 18 years of age or older to register for Furvester.

New Year’s Furry Ball infographic.

New Year’s Furry Ball, as the name suggests, takes place on December 31 at the Embassy Suites Newark Wilmington in Newark, Delaware, USA. With a Dealer’s Den, fursuit parade and group photo, game room, charity raffle, dances, and of course a ball drop ceremony, it’s amazing how much excitement they can pack into just a few short hours! No need to worry about dinner either, as a fully catered complimentary buffet dinner is included with your registration. This time around, the theme is Unwrap a Sweet New Year, which everyone in attendance almost certainly will. NYFB has invited Delaware local fursuit maker Kimmi Cocoa as their Guest of Honor this year. The charity is I Am Me Inc., an organization offering safe social spaces with programs that uplift and unify the LGBTQ community, which attendees can support through donations collected over the evening as well as the charity raffle. NYFB is requiring proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative PCR test.

As you may recall from last month’s issues, our cover artist Shiina will be at MFF in December! It sure is a big con, so please stop and say hi to her if you happen to cross paths! Remember to get vaxxed and wear your face mask when meeting up with any furs in person, and as another year comes to a close, take some time to reflect upon all you’ve experienced and accomplished in 2023.

Got questions or suggestions for Convention Calendar? Feel free to drop me a line on Twitter and the Fediverse, or hit me up at any of the other platforms linked on my website. If there’s an upcoming con you want to ensure we cover here on Furry Weekly, don’t hesitate to let me know. Have fun and stay safe out there!
