FURRY OF THE WEEK
Hello, everyone. My name’s Danielle, and welcome back to another edition of Furry of the Week!
This week, we have a special charity event going on this month that you won’t want to miss out on. Please welcome PapaBarks!
PapaBarks is an online charity event that is raising money to support the North Carolina ALS Chapter in the fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that can cause the loss of muscle control. Unfortunately, this disease gets worse over time. The exact cause is still unknown, but it often begins with muscle twitching and weakness in an arm or leg, trouble swallowing, or slurred speech.
This is PapaBark’s fourth year returning, and it will last from July 8th to the 28th to help fund ALS research. Every year, PapaBarks holds multiple events that will have a drawing at the week-long finale. Every five dollars donated will get you a drawing entry, and if you have multiple donations (as long as they use the same email), PapaBarks will add them together.
This is a fantastic way for many people to come together for a beneficial cause! As of Saturday, July 22, PapaBarks has amazingly raised over $27,000 out of their goal of $50,000. And get this – they reached their original goal of $25,000 right before this issue came out, so now they’re aiming for $50,000!
If you’re a Twitch streamer and are interested in joining the event, feel free to sign up here or on their Tiltify. I also encourage you to check out any Twitch streamers’ streams for the ALS fundraiser.
For more information, feel free to check out PapaBark’s Telegram channel.
Congratulations on being Furry of the Week, PapaBarks! Thank you very much for your contribution towards ALS research!

ANIMAL OF THE WEEK
Hello everyone! It’s Zed Shirogane and it’s another animal of the week segment!
Animal of the Week is a segment where we highlight an animal that is really cool, cute, creepy, or just plain fascinating. There will be a coloring page illustration for you all to print out and color in at home, as well as an adoptable character inspired by the animal of that week. The best part? All proceeds made by said adopt will be donated to conservation charities!
Whenever possible we do symbolically adopt the animal, but only some animals have the privilege to have that as an option unfortunately; thus we collect extra funds to donate to many different species conservation charities or send funds to scientists so that they can research underappreciated animal species, so we can in turn learn more about the world around us. Join us on this fun adventure!
It’s July, and the animal group for this month is the Falcons!
Falcons are birds of prey in the genus Falco, which includes about 40 species. Falcons are widely distributed on all continents of the world except Antarctica, though closely related raptors did occur there in the Eocene. Kestrels are the smallest falcon subspecies that typically sport brown or gray feathers along their backs and feed on small rodents, insects, and reptiles. Hobbies are slightly larger than their Kestrel cousins. The most well-known falcon group is the Peregrine falcon and its close relatives, which are powerful, fast, and truly impressive. The final group, which sometimes falls under the Peregrine group, is the Hierofalcons which have feathers that are red or brown and strong patterns throughout their plumage.
Falconry is the hunting of wild animals in their natural state and habitat by means of a trained bird of prey. Small animals are hunted; squirrels and rabbits often fall prey to these birds. Falconry centers or bird-of-prey centers house these raptors. They are responsible for many aspects of bird-of-prey conservation (through keeping the birds for education and breeding). Many conduct regular flying demonstrations and educational talks, and are popular with visitors worldwide.
The practice of falconry makes a lot of positive contributions to conservation efforts for birds of prey. Disease and predation leave many raptor species with a low chance of survival during the first year of life. Falconers trap these young chicks to use in the field, working to nurse them to optimal health and providing protection from predators. Once they’re done hunting with them, long after this period of vulnerability has passed, they release them back into the wild to thrive. Raptors prey on many of the nuisance birds, rodents, and other animals that ravage crops. Employing falconry as a form of pest control reduces the use of harmful chemicals that negatively impact our health and the environment. Additionally, falconry birds help manage prey populations in the wild to prevent overpopulation and the devastating long-term effects it can have on habitats and the ecosystem as a whole.
This Week’s Species: Black-thighed falconet (Microhierax fringillarius)
Characteristics
This is a minute, shrike-like falcon, with a squarish tail that is frequently spread. The adult male is glossy black above, with a white forehead streak that arcs around black cheeks. It has a white or rufous-washed throat, with a white breast shading into a rufous abdomen. Its thighs and flanks are black, as are its cere and legs.
Fun Facts
These falcons lay their eggs within old nest holes of other birds carved into the tree.
Habitat
Found from the Thai-Malay Peninsula to the Greater Sundas. The typical habitat is forest, forest edge and wooded open areas. It can also frequently be found around human cultivation, villages, and near active slash-and-burn forest clearance; often by rivers, streams, and paddy fields. It mostly lives below 1,500m elevation.
Diet
This falconet mainly feeds on insects, including moths, butterflies, dragonflies, alate termites and cicadas, occasional small birds, and lizards. Feeding behavior appears to often be social, with feeding parties up to ten recorded. Much of the prey is taken during quick flights from a perch.
Life Cycle
This falconet is generally social and gregarious, often found in loose pairs or groups of ten or more. The breeding season for this falcon varies by location, with populations up to the North of the equator breeding mostly in February–June. To the South of the equator, egg-laying is recorded in Java in November–December.
Conservation
There is no data on population densities, but like many tiny falconets, the total numbers are probably under-recorded. The overall range extends more than 1.5 million km². Population assessments vary from common (in Sumatra and Borneo), to fairly common (in Thailand), to scarce (in Java and Bali). In any case, the population seems to be in the upper tens of thousands, and appears to be tolerant of habitat disturbance. Here are some links to articles about the conservation of the black-thighed falconet:
Adopt
All funds from this adopt will go to animal conservation. The goal for this month is to save up to symbolically adopt falcons through a donation to UC Davis’s California Raptor Center to help fund the care of Apollo, Hawk Creek Wildlife Center to help fund for the care of Caspian, and the National Wildlife Federation: which requires a total of $140. This adopt will be one of 5 total created to achieve this goal and hopefully more, extra funds are pooled together to be donated to conservation research programs. It will be available for $30 at Shirogane Studios.
Coloring Page
Enjoy this coloring page made by yours truly, for you! Feel free to print it out at home to color in, or if you enjoy the design feel free to purchase it on a multitude of products.

ART CORNER
Hi everyone! This is Yeshua back again with another Art Corner segment! I’ve got more sensational artwork to share with you today, but before I do, I want to remind you all that we’re looking for someone to host this segment. So if you like looking at the wonderful art in the fandom and maybe you’d like to write about it, this might be for you! Just contact me directly if you’re interested in hosting this segment!
With that said, let’s check out today’s features!
Kicking us off today is FishyRoyals with a seriously delightful piece!
Starting with the linework, I love how clean it makes the character look! The character’s outline along with what seems like a pink shadow helps them stand out, and then the black linework in places like the hair and clothes works well to define those features. The artist also has an incredible grasp on anatomy. This character is a feline-butterfly hybrid – something I haven’t seen before, but frankly I really appreciate – and the characteristics of each species just look great; looks to me like the ears are the more ‘insect’ features, which, combined with the feline eyes, facial structure, and even the paws and claws, makes for a neat character!
Another notable feature is, of course, the colorwork. The coloring is very smooth and there is some nice depth and shadows that seriously enhance the piece. Lots of colors are at play here and it’s quite impressive how well the artist brought them together; the character’s outfit and accessories complement their color palette so well! The expression and pose also are also worth mentioning. The smile and the detail in the eyes along with the character holding the juice box just bring so much life to this piece.
I could probably write an essay if I kept going but I think I touched on some of the best attributes of this piece! Please keep making art, Fishy! You’re immensely talented!
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
Up next is UnoRaccoonArt with a lovely full body!
This style is honestly such a joy to look at! Certainly on the toony side, I like how the paws, snout, and eyes are all a little bigger compared to the rest of the body. Not only that, but both the animal and anthro features look excellent! The paws, claws, tail, ears and even the digitigrade legs are all drawn in a pretty straightforward, but precise way. This sort of style definitely seems like it could be an animated cartoon or video game and it feels quite vintage in a way.
And speaking of a vintage look, I’d say the colorwork also contributes to that, but I do want to highlight it on its own. There’s a bit of color depth throughout the character, particularly on the paw pads and clothing, but it also seems like some highlights are at play. Both the depth and highlights are incredibly subtle, but I think it works very well for a toony style like this.
Finally, I also want to point out the great work the artist did in giving the character life and personality. You can tell the character’s just walking casually, stepping one paw forward, one hand in pocket, waving with the other, and smiling with their mouth open! All of this is executed superbly, making the character look so friendly and approachable! Good stuff, I enjoyed getting to see this piece!
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
To close us off today, Piper steps up with a brilliant near-full body!
Here we’ve got a snazzy feline in what honestly looks like could be a photoshoot against a background in a studio. The character’s pose and smile, as well as her overall appearance, just make it seem like she’s being photographed, and truthfully, she just looks very photogenic! I think that speaks to how well Piper draws expressions and poses given how charming and full of personality the character looks.
The colorwork is also marvelous! You can see lots of depth in the dress, some shadows also on the dress as well as the tail, arms and neck, and there are also some shiny highlights on the hair and bow, and it looks like some parts of the dress also have some. All these elements come together fantastically to really elevate the look of the piece! I also want to mention that the work done to make the dress’ texture look like fabric while making the fur look comparatively soft is exceptional. It looks like some of the dress shows more of a painterly style while the fur is colored more smoothly, making for a very pleasing look. This was such a treat to see!
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
That’s all I have for this week, but wow, this was so much fun! Thank you all for joining me, I hope you all enjoyed seeing these pieces as much as I enjoyed it! Please give some love to all the artists!
If you want us to feature your artwork here, just use the tags #furryweekly and #artcorner when you post to social media, or just reach out to me directly and lemmino you want your work showcased!
I hope to see you all again next week with more awesome artwork, but until then, take care!

WRITING SHOWCASE
Hello, everybody! My name is Dozu, and I have for you today a story about Woxes and friendships turning sour!
⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰
Starless Nights
By Floofter
Summary: Blackout is a Demon Wox going to see his friend Husky, a Siren Wox with a cruel past of abuse at the paws of an evil father. Husky wants to prove to his friends that he is not a weakling to be pushed around by entering a duel for the leadership of the Sirens. Blackout doesn’t take it very well.
Highlights: This story flows nicely and is accompanied by some images that add to the tale. The thoughts of the characters and dialogue are both distinguished from the rest of the text by italics and quotations respectively. Good work!
For improvement: The font is black against a nearly black background, this makes the story impossible to read without highlighting it, and the letters are too small for some readers. Aside from that only add some separation to the paragraphs and you’re good to go!
Question time! Answer in a post and tag @FurryWeekly and @DoggyDozu if it’s on Twitter!
Have you ever heard of a Wox before?
What’s your favorite thing to do while out with your friends?
⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰
That will be all for today folks. I hope you have enjoyed my pick!
Let’s give our authors a round of applause for their hard work! Remember to include the tags #FurryWeekly and #WritingShowcase in your posts if you want us to see your own writing on any platform! See you all next time, and now I'll sashay away.

WRITING 101
It’s another quiet weekend morning in Tad’s basement apartment. As the summer heat ramps up outside, the apartment stays nice and cool… although Tad’s not certain how much the central air conditioning contributes to this fact. Nevertheless, it’s a good temperature to wear his plaid lounge pants and a white t-shirt, and it’s a good time to catch up on laundry.
The hawk hums as he bustles about, collecting his sheets and towels. The Camera follows to capture this slice of Tad’s life even though doing so is rather moot—neither planned to film anything or present any magazine work today. It was just an excuse to toy around with camera settings and fill some down time. Tad slips into the laundry room, hamper in hand, and sets down the basket before starting to fill the washer drum with water.
“You know… I hung these towels up to dry on Friday evening, and they’re still not dry,” says Tad. He collects a few towels and holds them up; indeed, they’re quite damp. “I know it takes a lot to dry off my feathers after a shower, but come on.”
He throws them in after picking out a loose bit of his own down. The washer fills up with clothes just in time for the agitator to begin doing its thing. He closes the lid with a snap.
“And now we wait.”
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
Hello friends, and welcome to Furry Weekly’s Writing 101! I’m Bryce Griffin, here to get all you writers out there the inside scoop on literature tips and tricks. Let’s get started!
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
This week, we’re shifting gears away from tropes in literature to take a look at literary devices. We use literary devices all the time in our writing whether we realize it or not. Rather than focus on the most common ones, as we’ve previously done for Writing 101, we’ll be looking at some tricky, often misunderstood devices.
The fourth and last example of irony doesn’t quite follow along with the three examples we’ve previously covered. Much like someone asking a leading question (where a query is crafted to suggest a particular answer and confirm information the questioner wants), Socratic irony deals with trying to get information through asking questions. Socrates’ teaching method revolved around a dialogue between him and his students; he’d continuously ask questions to his students as if he knew nothing about the subject matter, such that the students would offer their own viewpoints and thus reveal the foundations that build up their world knowledge. Socratic irony is similar to this, even though modern context has shaped it into underhanded information extraction or an opportunity to boast about one’s true subject knowledge.
Well-executed examples of Socratic irony lend themselves to supporting excellent story twists. Say a regular Joe is pals with a local car collector. They tour the car collection, tucked away in a large hangar outside of town. The Joe is curious about the building and the area because he doesn’t come out here too often. He asks questions about the building and who all gets to see it because a valuable collection like this surely must need careful protection. The collector admits that he’s not too sure, for he is the only person that comes out here every week or so.
Little does the collector know that this Joe has been out here every other night for the past month, carefully scoping out the joint for ways to break in and snag as many cars as possible. So, through Socratic irony, regular Joe finds out that the collector is rather inattentive to his possessions. When the collector returns in a week’s time to retrieve one of his many prized cars, he’ll see nothing but an empty hangar long-since relieved of its cargo.

While the washing machine does its thing, Tad takes time to clean up his desk area. It isn’t necessarily dirty, but plenty of dust has piled up since he last swept. Two swipes of a microfiber cloth over the tabletop reveal more grime than he was willing to see. Even the Camera recoils slightly.
“Eurgh… remind me to wipe down the desk every time I do laundry. I don’t want to let it get bad like this again.”
A musical chime rings out as the noise from the laundry room finally dies down.
“Ah! Time to get those towels dry.”
Tad hurries over to the washer and opens the lid, expecting to see his towels and linens splayed against the drum. Instead, he’s greeted with a tub full of towels and sheets swimming in plenty of sudsy water. He and the Camera stare down at the scene for several seconds.
“Hm....”
They finally look up at each other. Tad isn’t upset; in fact, he’s more bemused than anything.
“I don’t think that’s supposed to happen.”

FURSUIT FOCUS
Hi, hi, everyone and welcome to the first ever segment with our shiny, new name: Fursuit Focus! Brand new title, but, rest assured, the same quality fursuit content you love and expect – just with a little fine tuning. I’m still tahlmorra, your segment host, and this is still the same fun place to come look at some of the interesting, creative, and sometimes just-plain-unusual fursuits that populate our fandom.
This week finds us still lingering around the beautiful Netherlands countryside, and this time, we’re traveling to the province of Limburg, a region of significant cultural beauty (and incidentally, the greatest concentration of vineyards in the nation). It is in the north of this province that we’ve come in order to sit down with today’s guest; Dnanni the hybrid!
Dnanni and her suiter, Laura, aka – CrocoNeko, share the pronouns she/her, as well as both being quite new to the furry fandom. Dnanni was created in 2020 and is a blend of deer, wolf, and snow leopard hybrid. She is a full digitigrade fursuit with big ears, puffy handpaws, and a floor-dragging tail, primarily white with shades of gray and the occasional hint of aqua blue. Complementing that, you’ll most often find her sporting a bandana of the same shade of aqua blue as her accents.
Dnanni is Laura’s first fursuit, and just so happens to be her first fursuit creation (as CrocoNeko Creations, as well! She has only been to one event so far, a meet-up at Elfia Arcen in 2022, though she plans to continue to participate in that event every year moving forward. Other than that, Dnanni has only walked in public once when promoting a local shop. Even so, she’s found that she enjoys fursuiting for the chance to be herself when out and about. Also enjoyed, Dnanni loves giving others the experience to see a fursuit in real life and putting smiles on peoples faces when they see her. Dnanni hopes to attend a full furry convention one day and is also planning on changing some aspects of her fursuit in order to improve upon “many beginner faults,” this being her first fursuit.
Talking with Laura about her journey as a furry, she says “You can say that I never was a furry, but I slowly became one over time.” In her teen years, she used to draw (fantasy-based) animals and mythical creatures for much of the time while also watching and following a good number of artists. Eventually, she came across anthropomorphic animal features and those became her biggest fascination. Over time, she created a fursona of her own and toyed with the possibility of making a fursuit of it. Considering herself fairly introverted, she never really searched for others with similar interests. As such, she never really identified as a furry even after making Dnanni. Regardless, once she gathered up the courage to attend her first meet-up at Elfia Arcen she found herself looking forward to more events and meeting many more furries.
Becoming an actual fursuiter took, you could say, a little bit of serendipity. One day at an anime convention/market, she came across a fursuiter. Gathering up her courage, she asked them politely for a hug. It was something she always wanted to ask a fursuiter since fursuits had become her latest object of fascination, having learned that there were fursuiters in her area and not just online! Shaking from nerves, she got her hug and the inspiration to become a fursuiter herself. This experience became something she wanted to share with other people who were also interested in fursuits and the like.
As far as entering the fandom itself, Dnanni considers the 2022 Elfia furry meet-up to be when she really came on board. Though she still prefers to stand in the background most often, she says that she’s happy now that she has more courage to present herself to others. She still finds it a huge struggle for – in her words – “the introverted me,” but has strong hopes that it will get better as time goes on. Being in fursuit has given her the confidence to express another side of herself which she put as, “[It] gives my life a feeling of ‘completeness,’ if that makes sense.”
Choosing to make this particular fursuit was fairly simple: “This fursuit is my fursona and basically represents myself.” As an extremely indecisive person, she is particularly partial to hybrids. The animals represented in the fursuit have been chosen according to a specific criterion, specifically, “each of them represent[s] an aspect of myself.” Also, as someone who doesn’t like to be in the spotlight, she prefers neutral and natural colors over a flashier color palette. In this fursuit, Laura feels she can express another side of herself that she generally does not show. This helps her feel more complete. Initially, she tried to find a maker who could make her fursona. She had saved up enough money to purchase one, but just couldn’t find a maker who was the right fit for what she wanted. That is when she began to try and create one for herself and found it to be a great experience. She specifically loved seeing the progress of her own fursona coming to life.
On the subject of a typical fursuit outing (even though she has yet to do it much) and wearing a fursuit in public, Laura says that fursuiting in public will always be a scary experience for her, “although in a good way!” Fursuiting in any public space, she says, brings on a lot of stress as one gets looked at by many people and feels their expectations. On the other hand, this kind of pressure can also be motivation to improve and stepping outside one’s comfort zone – something she says she’s been practicing: “Being myself is at the core of what I like to do, as being myself in Dnanni seems to bring smiles to people’s faces and [raises] interest in the fursuit itself.” Additionally, she likes having a handler near her during any outing since they generally help her walk, avoiding stumbling and guiding her through the public spaces.
“The children.” she said when I asked if she had any memorable experiences to relate. “It's quite funny because out of my fursuit I don't feel like I am a children person and in fursuit I get more confronted by them. For example, when I promoted a shop with my fursuit, there was a group of young girls who liked my fursuit and at the end, one of the girls gave me a little paper with her name saying that she loves me, my fursuit. It really surprised me and just made me realize again how much of an impact a fursuit can have on someone and especially on younger people. It really made me happy.”
On the topic of misconceptions related to furries and fursuiters, Laura says it’s “...not a simple question that can be answered straightforwardly.” She first said misconceptions may be rooted in the fact that people often reject or distrust others that appear to have interests that don’t seem “normal.” In such cases, when it comes to relating with others who are interested in anthropomorphic figures, people who aren’t interested in such a form of art and expression may judge harshly. “I think that these issues and other misconceptions occur because people have in their nature as human beings the tendency to judge others on the basis of how they present themselves to the social environment.”
Laura said she believes that one should never judge a book by its cover, and she always tries to understand others and respect interests different from hers. She feels that it seems the various issues and misconceptions about furries are slowly fading as the community not only is getting larger, but also getting more public, showing a lot of fun activities and acts of kindness. As a matter of rule, not all furries are kind, but it would be foolish to make a blanket opinion based on a few cases. “What I mean is that I believe that there are some individuals who may or may not be furries and that join the community but use it in ways that may be socially unacceptable or even, in particularly extreme cases, abusive.” Consequently, she believes that there should be certain parameters to assess who becomes an official member of the furry community and who does not, as this could be a possible way to deter those who seek membership for external and instrumental goals unrelated to the fun, joy, and kindness of being a furry itself. How these rules and standards would be created and who would police them are for another discussion.
Approaching the end of the interview, I asked Dnanni if she had any words of advice that she might care to pass along to someone considering becoming a furry. “I personally think there is too much pressure on the notion of being or not being a furry when you like certain things,” she said. “You don't need to "become" a furry, you just need to do what makes you happy without boxing yourself into a category, and simply be yourself. As long as it brings happiness and joy to you and those around you. I wish I could have said this to myself sooner in life.”
Dnanni likes expressing her introversion through gaming, watching anime/series, and working on fursuits. Sometimes, she simply likes going out and about with her loved ones. She has no one favorite color, but any and all shades of aqua blue rate high on the list. Dnanni also loves animals, particularly cats and crocodiles, explaining that it’s the reason she cares for her two cats.
Dislikes are few, but a standout is when people judge others superficially, as she believes one should never judge a book by its cover. And mushrooms, can’t forget about mushrooms.
Finally, on the matter of personal or long-term goals, she relates that she never used to have a clear, exact passion that she followed in her life. Since creating her fursuit, however, she got so many positive reactions that she decided to make it her goal to be a fursuit maker “who can bring other people’s fursonas to life.” In this specific regard, she has made the short-term goal of making a fursuit for her beloved partner.
If you think you’d like to know more about Dnanni, follow her, or perhaps inquire about her fursuits and related information, you can reach her at CrocoNeko_Creations on Instagram!

PHOTOGRAPHY 101
Hello, friends and photografurs! Welcome to this week's Photography 101! I'm your host, Jaden (Discord @ Jaden711#0663). Almost everyone these days has a smartphone, and almost every smartphone has a camera! Smartphones are the most accessible cameras in the world, and with every new smartphone comes even better cameras and auto-image enhancement.
That's why today we’ll be talking about how great these mini-cameras are!
First, I would like to address the hoax that Android phones have inherently bad quality. While this is true if you’re taking pictures through apps like Instagram due to bad optimization, taking photos directly through your default camera app will not result in a large difference in quality between an Android or Apple phone from the same year. In fact, the Samsung Galaxy S23 is tied in camera quality with the iPhone 14! So don't feel like smartphone photography is out of the realm of possibility because of the brand of phone you have. Even if the phone you have is old and does have poor quality compared to newer phones, you can still turn that bad quality into a unique style. Remember, there are no bad cameras, just bad styling.
Let's take a look at our first photo taken with a Samsung A52, a phone that is by no means the best on the market, but still can hold up on its own.
The focus on this photo is a bit off on the very front of the flower, which is one of the documented downsides to this phone, but even with that downside, this still isn't a bad photo! The bokeh is beautiful, the subject is very clear, the colors pop and there's no noise. Noise in photography refers to the TV static effect you may get in dark scenes or with a camera that's poor in quality and is generally not ideal for most styles.
The next photo we’ll take a look at is from a Z-flip 3. While this is a much newer phone on the market, it's not known for its great camera quality since its photos usually contain lots of noise in anything darker than natural outdoor light.
The first thing you may notice about this photo is how green it is. This was unintentional and wasn't edited, which means this was due to the camera having an error in balancing the tint, which would usually be undesirable. But thankfully, due to the framing and subject, this green tint really works in our favor and adds a unique style to the photo. Second, we really notice the noise this phone camera has, especially to the right of the photo, but again this works really well in our favor and adds a special style and flavor to our photo that otherwise could have left our photo feeling incomplete or confused in its style.
All this goes to show that bad quality cameras can be used effectively if you know how to use these imperfections to your advantage. Don't be ashamed or pushed away from photography because all you have is your smartphone. Phones can still take amazing photos and don't let anyone tell you otherwise!

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
We start with Aoi, a graphic designer who specializes in neat logos and emotes, some of which are Pokémon based. Aoi also does stream layouts and graphics (GFX). Logos and emotes are Aoi’s main focus as far as commission options go. However, if you are interested in a stream layout or GFX, definitely contact Aoi regarding them.
You can find a portfolio of Aoi’s work on Dribbble. Feel free to message Aoi for any other questions and/or if you’re interested in a commission.
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
Next, we have Frindle, an aspiring animator and artist who specializes in cartoony characters. Frindle offers many amazing different styles and options, including but not limited to illustrations, animated icons, convention badges (traditional and digital), and Telegram/Discord stickers. Prices begin as low as $20 and vary with complexity and the commissioner’s budget.
Frindle has a pay what you want (PWYW) commission fundraiser going on that is streamed on Tuesdays from 10 am to 3 pm CDT until the goal is met on stream. Feel free to request for a slot here. If you are interested in a commission and/or have any other questions, feel free to message Frindle.

CHARACTER INTERVIEW
Hey, everybody! This week's edition of Character Interview is coming at you from me, Rizou!!
While Character Interview highlights furr(ies) every week, it's safe to say this furry and his work has been a highlight for many, week by week. From his comic strips, host to colourful characters and the relationships that blossom between them, to his sagas that explore the deepest heartfelt and human experiences– furry or not– this artist and writer has touched his audience with work that encourages everyone to express their true colour.
Because this week's furry is none other than...
The creator of the popufur webcomic, Duncan and Eddie! It's Chervil! Also known as DogInACafe-!
Chervil: The first line of the article is: “I talked to Chervil, an absolute PSYCHO, in person."
…
Chervil: That's going in the article now, too.
You're the boss.
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
Unless you've been living under a rock, chances are you've seen Duncan and Eddie before. Rarely does a week go by without at least one panel of the comic making a well-upvoted appearance on r/furry, and this week (comic pictured above) was no exception. This July 2023, I had the pleasure to sit down with Chervil and have a chat about his series. Between laughs (see above) and seemingly endless off-topic banter, Chervil showed me both a good time and a few interesting tidbits about his role in the furry fandom. So, join me below for this Character Interview installment with the silly dragon behind one of the most beloved furry phenomenons today!
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
First, Chervil introduced himself while I tried not to laugh
Chervil: Hi, I'm Chervil! I'm an animator and comic artist and I make a cute li'l slice of life comic strip called “Duncan and Eddie!” I feel like I probably should be typing with proper punctuation but I already hit enter so here we are.
I'll spare you the all-but obligatory horsing around, but eventually, we got into some real questions.
Rizou: How long have you been drawing, and subsequently, drawing furry stuff, and how did you get into it?
Chervil: I've been drawing ever since I was a kid (so, like, fifteen-ish years maybe?)! But I only started drawing furry stuff really two years ago when I started the comic! It's really apparent actually if you look back at the first comics that I didn't know how to draw like snouts at all haha, but the art gets a lot better! My favorite artist was a furry artist and they made me really wanna draw furry stuff, so I made a side account (now main account) and made a random little comic strip with a goat and crocodile! From there it just snowballed into the comic I made today!
It can also be noted that Chervil studies art at his university
Rizou: Who was this artist? And okay, let's get into it, what inspired you to specifically do a comic about a couple?
Chervil: The artist is @tatertottoto!! If you look at some of their REALLY old art, you might be able to spot some similarities in how I draw faces for furries! As for the comic, Duncan and Eddie are pretty heavily inspired by me and my partner. they're not quite one to one, but once you get to know us, you can start to see the similarities haha!
Rizou: Okay haha, begs the question then, are you Duncan, or Eddie?
Chervil: Definitely more Eddie! My partner is a big goofball and I love him for it!
Rizou: Stan Eddie!
Chervil: STAN EDDIE. Words that have never been uttered before.
I beg to differ...
Rizou: Well then, let's talk about what you've done with the plot and stuff. I mean you've tackled certain issues like disownment. Are these things also inspired by your life, and how have you tried to use your story to relate them across?
Chervil: Sort of, but not directly by any means! I like to keep my personal life pretty private, so any, like, plots or story threads aren't ever things that happened to me. I just want to tell stories that are important to me that they're told! The world can be so harsh and unforgiving to LGBT folk, and I really want the comic to just be a source of positivity in LGBT spaces without shying away from sometimes heavier topics. I think there's a lot of merit in making something that's silly and cute and fun, even if it isn't always super deep!
I do find it really funny, though, when people bring up the plot in the comics since like 95% of the comics are all just cute comic strips haha! It's always really flattering having people remember my work and characters in any capacity!
Rizou: I think that is especially true in today's climate, where in a lot of places these stories are getting silenced again. And it's always important to take a second and appreciate the small cute things, too! But speaking of plot, am I remembering it wrong or are you starting a new arc soon?
Chervil: I am in fact! It's the finale to Eddie's coming out arc I started two years ago now (wow!!), exploring how his family trauma still affects him even after being disowned. It's 27 pages in length (the longest one yet by a LOT!), and I'm really happy with how it's turning out! It's definitely the most heavy and serious the comic gets, so there's definitely a bit of a tone shift from the regular comics, but I hope you all will be looking forward to it when it releases!
Rizou: Can you talk to me a little about what you want your audience to take away from it? And what do you personally get out of it as the writer?
Chervil: Well you'll just have to wait 'till it comes out for that first question! But to answer the second, I wasn't actually planning on making this comic for the longest time. Eddie's coming out arc was supposed to be just the original series, "True Color," but people responded so lovingly and got so invested in the characters and story, I decided to keep developing the world bit by bit over time until it culminated into this! The new comic is actually based around an old idea I had written down before I even made Eddie's whole closeted series, so it feels only right that it comes full circle to end on it!
Rizou: Awww, couldn't quite swindle my way into the sneak peek huh? Heh, alright that sounds really awesome, and really neat that it's all coming around. It does beg the question, though, where do you go from there?
Chervil: For the comic, I've got all sorts of plans to keep taking it! There's all sorts of relations and characters I want to explore further in full comics (Kip and Mason's relationship, Duncan's father, the three waiters, etc.), but beyond that I don't see myself stopping making the simple weekly comic strips any time soon! I have I think 90 comics written up in my drafts as we speak, haha, so I've got enough ideas floating around for a good few more years
Rizou: Never stop the Duncan and Eddie train! Say, what is your writing process like?
Chervil: MY WRITING PROCESS OH NO! I would probably describe it as chaotic and indecipherable, HAHA! If I'm writing a draft for a comic strip, it's simple enough. I'll very briefly describe each of the panels and any accompanying dialogue:
Chervil: As for the longer scripts, I'm not very confident in my writing, so they usually end up going through tons of rewrites and drafts. With "To Coda," the newest series, I believe it went through 4-5 complete rewrites from the ground up before I found something I was happy with! Because I'm not very confident with my writing though, the majority of the scene development happens when I'm doing the layouts of the comic (something that's generally true with the comic strips, too), which can lead to me making huge changes to the story on a whim, haha. I actually ended up writing a whole entire comic series with Vicky and Phoebe that I never did anything with because of the difficulty I was having writing it!
What if we all asked nicely...?
Chervil: I mean you're talking to the guy that makes four panel comics, it doesn't get much more basic than that, HAHA
Rizou: He says, about to drop a 27-page comic series
Chervil: HEY, THAT'S DIFFERENT!
Rizou: [Well, in the long run,] what are you planning to do once you finish [college?]
Chervil: Storyboarding! I feel like that one might've been a little easy to guess based on the comics though, haha.
Rizou: I never would have guessed. [emoji of a face sticking its tongue out teasingly]
Chervil: You have to include the emoji in the article now.
...He made me.
While we had to wrap it up at that point, Chervil did end up giving me a sneak-peek at his upcoming arc, "To Coda." While I can't share it with you, I'll tell you all that his writing has gotten even better, and it's been a while since a comic gripped me so emotionally, so quickly. Definitely stay tuned for what could be his best work yet!
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
All in all, it was a blast hanging out with Chervil this week. If he didn't make my weeks already with his comics, he sure did with his amazing personality. I hope you enjoyed reading about it as much as I did experiencing it! Frankly, it's incredible what Chervil has accomplished and done for the fandom in just two years, I'm excited to see what he'll bring to us in the years to come. I know it's going to make my week again in the future for sure.
With that, let's make sure to check him out on his socials (rumor has it he just released a calendar!?) and give him a big thanks for joining us at Furry Weekly this week! "To Coda'' hasn't come out just yet, so for now, you might as well keep reading the rest of our articles this week and be sure to catch us back here next time!
See ya later, alligators! Or was it “In a while, crocodile…?”
By the way, we’re always on the lookout for candidates to feature for their fabulous contributions to the community! If you have any questions about this segment or would like to send us a recommendation for a future Character Interview, feel free to contact me. You can also find me on Instagram @RizouWolf.
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
Rizou: we're off the record now, I only had like one other question
Chervil: hit me!
Rizou: This one's actually kinda important LoL... Can I have your number?
Chervil: ...
Chervil:"LoL" You play league, don't you?
Rizou: No
Chervil: FRICK!
...Nevermind… I don't think I want your number anymore.

CONVENTION CALENDAR
Greetings and salutations, readers! I’m Shetani, your Convention Calendar segment host for this issue. I hope our canine readers are keeping cool during the dog days of summer, though if you live in the southern hemisphere, it’s quite the opposite! Whether it’s warm or cold where you are, Furry Weekly HQ is always the coziest place to be - after all, there’s no weather in cyberspace. In any case, let’s dive into all the July furry conventions and events happening online, around the world, and in your neck of the woods.
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
Anthrocon is in full swing through Sunday July 2 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Anthrocon has decided on the theme “Anthropolis - Our Furry City” for this year, celebrating the unique partnership this furry convention shares with its host city of Pittsburgh. In keeping with this theme, Anthrocon forgoes choosing a 2023 guest of honor, to underline how everybody contributes to making the furry community great. Anthrocon will, however, spotlight a charity: Rabbit Wranglers, a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit that helps abused, neglected, and abandoned rabbits and educates the public to improve the lives of these companion animals. A charity auction and poker tournament are being held to benefit the organization.
As the current third-largest furcon worldwide, there’s plenty to do and see at Anthrocon. In addition to classic con staples like a Dealer’s Den and Artist Alley, masquerade, games room, fursuit parade, nighttime dances with DJs, and photobooth, Anthrocon 2023 will feature multiple fursuit friendly sightseeing cruises, and more panels, meetups, and events than you can brandish a branch at. Even that doesn’t fully encompass the fun-filled schedule that awaits attendees, so be sure to check out Anthrocon’s website to get the full scope of events! Anthrocon requires proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or a negative test, and masking in specified areas of con space.

This marks the first time the con’s programming extends to five full days of fun and excitement. This year's theme is Valhalla, quite an apt choice for a Danish convention! Attendees can expect board gaming, fursuiting, an art auction on the last day of the con, and plenty of inexpensive drinks. The minimum age requirement to attend Furtastic is 16. Furtastic has an attendee limit of 80, which at the time of writing, has already been reached. If you missed your chance to buy tickets, there’s always next year!

For the first time, FurryEST has chosen a theme - Waves and Flames - wherein attendees will be able to take part in various events during the weekend to show support for their chosen element, fire or water.
Unfortunately, FurryEST didn’t receive enough interest to host a Dealer’s Den this year, but artists will still be allowed to sell their wares informally at the con. Past iterations have included water-bike rides, outdoor sports, canoe racing, tabletop games, DJs, a bonfire, and fursuiting, of course. If you hope to attend FurryEST, bring a photo ID and make sure you’re at least 18 years old on the first day of the con.

Rounding out July’s events is a fresh face to the furry convention scene! Eufuria Mini-Con will take place Saturday July 22 at Cafe Euphoria in Troy, New York, USA. This intrepid event aims to bring a furry convention back to the Upstate NY region for the first time since 2016. Eufuria attendees can expect vendors, gaming, panels and workshops, dancing, a fursuit parade, and lots of tasty food - including a special exclusive furry-themed menu for the convention! On the schedule are panels about at-home fursuiting, voice acting, furry badges, and disability in the fandom. General admission to Eufuria is free, with supporter and sponsor tiers available for those who desire extras, and pre-registered attendees can add on a dinner voucher for a complimentary meal. Attendees must be 18 years old, and provide photo ID as well as proof of COVID-19 vaccination.

I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be present at Eufuria Mini-Con in July, and I hope to see so many other furry faces there! Don’t hesitate to come along and say hi, and let me know you’re a Furry Weekly reader. Remember to keep up-to-date on vaxx boosters and wear your face mask when meeting up with any furs in person.
